A Teenage perspective of The Lockdown 2020 - Episode 76
My name is Emaad Saad. I was born in New Jersey, and spent ten years in Canada, after which I moved to Karachi where I'm now in A-levels at KGS as a pre med student. I believe in education and have an immense respect for educators, prompting my decision to co-found Nativlearning, an online educational course creator in native languages. I'm also an avid reader, chess player, and basketball player. My name is Ismail Irfanullah. I was born in Minneapolis and remained there until the age of 11. I then moved to Karachi, Pakistan, and attended The Karachi Grammar School. After completing middle school, I returned to Minneapolis where I am currently a student at Eagan High School. My hobbies include squash, tennis, mountain biking, and learning Arabic. Through my limited experience, mostly shaped from having lived on both sides of the world, I have developed a sense of gratitude for things most take for granted and learned to love, and try to understand, all people.
My name is Omar Tariq. I was born in London in 2002 and since then I have lived in Pakistan, Singapore and the UK. I am currently studying the advanced placement at an american school in England and plan to pursue economics, finance, or social sciences in university starting from 2021. During my free time, I really like to play golf, go for jogs, and cycle. This is pretty much how I spent most of my lockdown too. I strongly believe that perseverence and motivation makes us better people because it gives us the opportunity to learn from our mistakes and always have a positive mindset towards what we are trying to achieve in life

She moved to Karachi after her marriage to Flight Lieutenant Syed Safi Mustafa who was martyred only after one year of his marriage with Shabina in 1971. Widowed at the young age of 21 with her infant son, her life practically began from that point onward. During all the hardships and challenges of being a single parent, her resolve to impact lives of the less fortunate grew even stronger. Juggling between her job and taking care of her son she never forgot the dream of her late husband, who often talked about opening a school for the underprivileged. In 1999 when her maid’s daughter was denied admission to a school, she created a small space in her garage and started teaching children of similar background. In no time the entire garage was taken up by children from low income areas eager to learn, and The Garage School was born.

"Forgetting to laugh ...is like forgetting to sleep or breathe" - Moni Mohsin , Episode 44
Having a podcast with Moni Mohsin, face to face , was the much needed dose of laughter, humor, intellect, wisdom and experience. Honored and humbled to have her on 'dhaani' - A platform that wants to promote well-being, on the emotional, psychological, physiological, spiritual level - and laughter , humor and wit is an intrinsic feature of the human life. We spoke about privacy, laying safe boundaries, the need for solitude, social media and intrusiveness, and last but not the least Moni was generous to share her "Social Butterfly" snippets with us.
Moni Mohsin was born in 1963 in Lahore, Pakistan. Since her father was from the landed gentry of Punjab and her mother from a business family in Lahore, she grew up between Lahore (where she attended a strict convent school run by Irish nuns) and Okara, where she ran wild with peasant children. Like her siblings before her, she left Pakistan at the age of sixteen to attend boarding school in England. Having completed her A’levels, she proceeded to Cambridge to read for a tripos in Archaeology and Anthroplogy.
In 1986 she returned to a Pakistan gripped tight in the iron fist of General Zia-ul-Haq. She spent the next two years working for an environmental agency, where she produced Pakistan’s first environmental news magazine, Natura. And then in 1988, when General Zia was assassinated and space for political discourse opened up once again, she moved to a new publishing venture, The Friday Times, Pakistan’s first independent weekly. She spent seven years there, rising eventually to the position of Features Editor.
She married in 1995 and moved back to England with her husband. Since then she has freelanced for a number of Pakistani magazines including The Friday Times, Libas and Zameen. She has also contributed short fiction to the creative writing issue of Wasafiri 2000 edited by Aamer Huussein and Bernadine Evaristo and an anthology on Lahore edited by Bapsi Sidhwa and published by Penguin India. She has also authored a travel book on Lahore published by the Guide Book Company and is currently in talks for the publication of her journalistic writings with Vanguard Books Pakistan and Penguin India. The Ceremony of Innocence is her first novel. She has two children and divides her time between Lahore and London.
Moni Mohsin is a Pakistani born novelist and freelance journalist based in London. She has authored two novels, the award winning The End of Innocence (Penguin UK) and Duty Free (Vintage) which was adapted for Radio Four’s Book at Bedtime. Her long running satirical column in the weekly newspaper, The Friday Times in Lahore, has been published by Vintage as The Diary of a Social Butterfly and its best selling follow up, The Return of the Butterfly, by Random House India.
Her journalistic work has appeared in The Guardian, 1843, Prospect, The Literary Review, Vogue, The Times of India and Nikkei Asian Review. Last year her article ‘Austenistan’ (published in 1843) was shortlisted for a Foreign Press Association award. She does book reviews, cultural features, political pieces, satirical columns and celebrity interviews and writes on topics ranging from domestic workers in the Middle East to Bollywood.

"Ambition in me has always been about the battles inside" Nadia Jamil, Actor - Part 1 , Episode 26
This happened to be my first podcast sitting face to face with my guest who was none other than Nadia Jamil. The conversation was caffeinated, speckled with pauses, lots of tearful blotches, hearty laugher, admissions , permissions, pronunciations and enunciations. This is a 2-part conversation where Nadia candidly talks about Lahore, lessons, trusting and connecting, her lineage and her parents, her love for nature and her extreme love for words.
The beats, rhythms, rhymes of her acting career, her role as a mother, anger management and the importance of establishing boundaries in relationships.
"I started school at a Catholic convent in London and ended it on a Catholic convent in Lahore. After my A levels I went on to study under the guidance of Professor Eqbal Ahmad in the USA. I studied drama and political science with a minor in creative writing.
However my learning has come from everywhere, everyone and everything. Not just the academic institutions I have been in.
I grew up surrounded by art, culture, politics and romance. I witnessed and learned from it but also from hypocrisy, lies, violence and posturing. I saw the beautiful, the ugly and keep learning from it all. What I want to be, want I do not choose to be. I love all my plays. I’m not a deeply ambitious actor but both my times at The Globe theatre and my experiences with street theatre in Lahore are acutely important to me.
Performing a strong script on Stage is where I am the bravest.
I am a teacher of mindfulness, drama, posture, expression and self confidence. Also an anchor and tv host, connection and communication is important to me. I write. I am a story teller.
I am a student.
I run a small creative arts institute called The Empty Space- Nadia Jamil’s Imaginarium. It is primarily for children from vulnerable back grounds, but also for all children, youth and elders. I am a staunch advocate and activist for the rights of children. However I will speak for animals, nature, the vulnerable anywhere and everywhere I can.
I am a proud survivor of abuse and learn every day that the most powerful friend and companion I must invest in, is myself. I am a mother. Learning to be a better one helps me fulfil my ambition to be a better human being. There are too many lessons being taught every second for me to name one, but an important one is to learn to get up, hold your own heart and pull yourself up. Knowing you will fall again, knowing you have to strengthen yourself to haul your self up again. And in that process look around. Your greatest teacher is Nature, let it heal you. Your second greatest teacher is childhood. The child in you, the children around you. Learn how to bounce back from them.
Serve. Serve everything selflessly. Without agendas. Without expecting. Prepare yourself. This life is an incubation period, it is a womb. Laugh, laugh easily and in good humour. Never cruelly. Laugh at yourself, at the ridiculous, at the wonderful. Laugh because you know you CAN get up. Laugh in joy, you have the will to cut through your pain. You are a survivor. Laugh with me." He later moved back to Pakistan to work in the financial services industry and was involved in asset management and commercial banking.
Having travelled to over 50 countries, attending executive education at Harvard Business School, Muzaffar knew that something was missing. He had an “aha!” moment on his trip to Finland, where he had the opportunity to spend time in Finnish schools and interact with educationists. Inspired bywhat he had seen, he imagined the way new, non-traditional systems of education could interrupt the standardized, rigid educational landscape of Pakistani education. He realized that he wanted to do something more meaningful –something transformative, something innovative. In 2015, Muzaffar found his true calling with Veritas Learning Circle (VLC).
Muzaffar is an ICF Certified Coach, RYT 200 Yoga Teacher (Bali) and a practicing therapist having completed his diploma in Humanistic Integrative Counseling from CPPD, UK.
He’s married to Aneeta and together they are blessed with three beautiful kids: Zeina (6), Meer (3) and Karam (2).
