How to Remain Inclusive in a Hybrid Workplace
Over the last 18 months, it has been difficult to sustain community within the workplace. There is less opportunity to see the familiar faces of coworkers as we have become accustomed to seeing colleagues over video chats rather than bumping into them at the office. The overload of virtual meetings and conference calls have created a weaker bond between employees, and has also made it more difficult for employees to feel engaged. As calendars become congested with numerous meetings and the hybrid work environment persists, it is necessary for companies to not lose sight of the importance of inclusivity.
On this episode of Dimensions of Diversity, host Lloyd Freeman is joined by Aneesh Mehta and Rebecca Benavides from Microsoft, who share their best practices for conducting inclusive and engaging meetings within a hybrid work environment. The two speakers will provide insight into Microsoft’s research-driven guide on how to run inclusive meetings and share tips on how to engage employees. Further, they will share their thoughts on the importance of meeting-leaders properly preparing their teams prior to meetings, setting the tone, setting expectations, and challenging themselves to think beyond surface-level involvement so that productivity can continue to thrive in the workplace.

It is clear why diversity is good in a business, but improvements in diversity will not happen with companies being passive in their recruiting processes. In this episode, our speakers discuss what true intentionality looks like and how to systemically create opportunities for everyone in the workplace.

Rest, Reset, Rejuvenate, and Reflect
The pandemic period has sparked an increased awareness of self-care practices and the importance of taking time for yourself. The difficult part for many is finding time around busy work schedules to properly rest.
On this fascinating episode of Dimensions of Diversity, host Lloyd Freeman is joined by past president of the Metropolitan Black Bar Association in New York and current CEO of PGE Consulting Group LLC, Paula Edgar, who discusses her recent decision to find the time to reset. Paula is a woman who, like many others, wears many hats, and therefore has a lot on her plate. She is a dedicated lawyer, consultant, speaker, mother, wife, and resourceful peer. Paula is accustomed to living a fast-paced life as she constantly dedicates herself to navigating her clients’ challenges and works every day to leave a significant impact on the world around her. With such passion for the workforce, Paula was familiar with saying “yes” to everyone, but what she was uncomfortable with was saying “yes” to herself. This past summer, Paula made a decision that was difficult at first, one that many might find surreal for a legal professional: she took a two-month sabbatical. In this episode, Paula and Lloyd examine the trajectory of the past year and how it played a role in Paula’s decision. The two will also discuss the benefits that proper reflection-periods can bring to the workplace, and how taking time for yourself can actually amplify your work upon your return.

Mentoring in Underrepresented Groups
In every workplace around America, there’s a conversation around how to structure effective mentoring matches. It’s no secret that those who have the benefit of a mentor often attain higher and more equitable salaries, they’re better positioned for promotions and tend to move from satisfaction to engagement within the workplace. But, finding that mentor, cultivating a relationship and sustaining that match can prove difficult, particularly for those individuals from underrepresented backgrounds.
Our guest for this episode is, Dr. Marcus Lambert, Associate Vice President for Research Strategy and Operations at SUNY Downstate Medical Center. He has conducted research and published thought leadership on this topic and other areas that increase diversity and inclusion.

Invisible Disabilities in the Workplace
Over 3 million Americans are living with a disability. Many of those conditions are very apparent to us. You’ll see some individuals using a wheelchair. Others may require the assistance of a service animal. But, our everyday ableism does not always respect those who are living with invisible disabilities—those that we cannot see or easily ascertain. These individuals, and the diversity they bring to the workplace, demands respect and is protect by laws such as the Americans with Disabilities Act.
On this episode of Dimensions of Diversity, host Lloyd Freeman is joined by Crystal West Edwards, a principal at Porzio Bromberg & Newman where she specializes in elder and disability law. The two spend time talking about how we can all better understand invisible disabilities.

Diversity in the Pharmaceutical Industry
The pharmaceutical industry, like many others, has room for improvement when it comes to diversity. Most recent studies show that approximately 1/3 of the top 50 pharma companies have no women on their board and only 8% of board seats are held by ethnically diverse directors, compared with 14% of the Fortune 500 overall. But there are signs that the industry is heading in the right direction by focusing more on diversity. Civica is an example, with women making up about half of the company’s leadership team, the board of directors and leading critical parts of their business.
On this episode of Dimensions of Diversity, host Lloyd Freeman talks to Jennifer Spalding, General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer at Civica. The two discuss the need for improvement in diversity within the Pharma space and what Spalding and Civica are doing at her company to make a leading difference.

Microaggressions, Microassaults, Microinsults, and Microinvalidations
For people in underrepresented or marginalized groups, microaggressions, microassaults, microinsults, and microinvalidations are too often experienced. And the resulting effect can be harmful. Individuals may stop speaking up, stop taking risks, experience decreases in productivity, quit jobs and in the most egregious example, file discrimination complaints.

Promote, Advance, Grow: The Role of White Male Allies in Corporate America
When you hear the words diversity, equity and inclusion, white male is probably not the first thing that comes to mind. In fact, white male leaders offer an important, and perhaps less heard, voice in discussions about transforming organizational culture to support the success of all diverse talent. This advocacy journey is not always linear, but white male allies play a critical role in providing mentorship, resources and opportunity to make their organizations—and leaders—more diverse and inclusive.
On this episode of Dimensions of Diversity, host Lloyd Freeman is joined by Greg Jordan, General Counsel and Chief Administrative Officer at PNC Financial Services and Joe Dougherty, CEO and Managing Director of Buchanan. The three will offer their personal successes and missteps, and what they are doing every day to foster organizational change and create truly inclusive workplaces.

The How and Why of Seeing More Women in Congress
The number of women in Congress and in state legislatures has been slowly but steadily rising. Though there is still significant underrepresentation of women in government, women are beginning to win more seats in government and have a stronger voice in policymaking.
On this episode of Dimensions of Diversity, host Lloyd Freeman talks with Representative Joanna E. McClinton (D), House minority leader in the Pennsylvania Legislature. Ms. McClinton represents PA's 191st Legislative District, which encompasses parts of Southwest, West Philly, Montgomery and Delaware counties. In 2018, she became the only Black person and woman ever selected to chair the House Democratic Caucus, and in 2020 became the only Black woman to ever hold a party leadership position in Harrisburg.
In their discussion, Freeman and McClinton discuss the increase of women in politics, the challenges women and specifically Black women face, and what the future holds for her and politics in general.

Women in the C-Suite
Women in corporate America continue to break glass ceilings, but female talent at C-suite level is still underrepresented. In fact, when it comes to Compliance Officers, just 1/3 are women.
On this episode of Dimensions of Diversity, host Lloyd Freeman is joined by Kathy Gaddes, Executive Vice President and Chief Compliance Officer for AmerisourceBergen. Gaddes assumed her current role in October 2018 after serving as Executive Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer since 2016. She has been with AmerisourceBergen since 2011.
