EP #160 | Dividend Investing on a Budget | Also news about Siemens, Novo-Nordisk and Kojamo
In this podcast episode, we engage in a conversation about budgeting, investing, and achieving financial freedom. We explored the mindset shift I needed to transition from the early retirement movement to the concept of financial freedom. Rather than focusing solely on retiring early, our discussion centers around building a solid financial foundation and escaping the need for a traditional 9-to-5 job.
The conversation we had moved into the gradual increase in savings rates as we become more conscious of our spending habits and find ways to allocate more of our income towards investing. We highlighted the potential for individuals, especially younger ones, to start with lower savings rates and gradually work their way up as their financial mindset evolves.
Throughout the episode, we emphasized the importance of staying realistic about goals and expectations in our investing journey. We discussed the pitfalls of ignoring fees and the need to make informed investment choices, particularly when starting with smaller amounts. Our conversation also touched on the role of fractional shares and the pros and cons of different investment platforms, such as Interactive Brokers and Trading 212.
One key theme we consistently stressed was finding a balance between frugality and enjoying life's experiences. We encouraged listeners to challenge societal norms and question the necessity of certain expenses, all while maintaining a focus on creating memorable moments without overspending. Our ultimate message centered around the long-term nature of investing and the potential for financial freedom as a means to dictate our work-life balance.
In summary, our podcast episode offers a valuable discussion on the journey of budgeting, investing, and achieving financial independence. We provide insights and practical advice for listeners at various stages of their financial endeavors, emphasizing the importance of a mindful approach to building a secure financial future.

Eps 157 - Texas Instruments Business Breakdown | Also: is Unilever finding its Mojo back?
In this podcast episode, Derek and the European Dividend Growth Investor discuss two main topics: Unilever's performance and potential dividend outlook, as well as Texas Instruments' business breakdown and their thoughts on the stock.
For Unilever, they acknowledge the recent changes with a new CEO and how the company seems to be turning things around after a period of underperformance. The recent earnings report shows positive signs in sales volume and margins. However, they caution against expecting an immediate dividend hike as the new CEO may focus on stabilizing the company's financials first. Both participants have Unilever as a significant position in their portfolios and are not overly concerned about dividend cuts, given the company's historical practice of keeping dividends flat during challenging times and gradually raising them when performance improves.
Regarding Texas Instruments, they compare it to high-end companies like Nvidia, emphasizing that TI is known for its quality and reliability, akin to Siemens. They discuss the cyclical nature of the semiconductor industry and how TI is making substantial investments in its business, particularly in the development of three hundred-millimeter chips, to secure future revenue streams and stay competitive in the tech landscape.
They highlight challenges in the industry, such as recent chip shortages and weakening demand. Despite these challenges, they also recognize the vast opportunities TI has in growing technology trends like AI, IoT, and 5G.
When valuing TI, the discussion suggests using the dividend discount model (DDM) due to the variable cash flows resulting from heavy investments.
Overall, they view Texas Instruments as a strong business with growth potential. However, they urge caution with the entry point given the current risks. The European Dividend Growth Investor considers TI a top 10 stock in his portfolio and encourages the community to share their thoughts on Texas Instruments and any aspects they may have missed in the analysis.

EPS 140 - how we decide what to buy when the market is under stress.
In this episode, we share our thoughts on how we decide what to buy when the market is under stress.
At the beginning of the episode, we discuss the news of the week surrounding ECB rate hike and how this has caused some fear for Irish residents due to the eviction ban being lifted at the end of the month. We also discuss Pfizer ($PFE) and their decision to spend $43 billion to acquire Seagen. Is this cash-rich company squandering money?
Dividend Updates this week include Inditex, WP Carey and Vonovia.
In the main topic, we discuss how the current situation in the financial sector is influencing what we buy.
EDGI key takeaways include:
- Avoid the blast zone at all times! You don’t need to be a hero
- Look for high-quality stocks unrelated to the blast zone. However, often they hardly correct. Point in case: Texas Instruments, LVMH
- However, insurance companies might still be worth considering. However, why are they dropping so much then?
- Ideally, I would buy for instance Pharma stocks right now, or consumer staples
- Energy is usually neither really a good idea because it’s very sensitive to consumer demand and expectations around that.
- This is your time to gobble up some high-quality stocks. As an example, JNJ doesn’t look too bad at these prices.
Derek’s key takeaways include:
- Try and stick to your core holdings
- Forget about price and yield.
- Focus on fundamentals and what can change them
- Feels like a candy store but blocking out all the noise is important
As always we finish the episode with listener questions.
