EPS 140 - how we decide what to buy when the market is under stress.
In this episode, we share our thoughts on how we decide what to buy when the market is under stress.
At the beginning of the episode, we discuss the news of the week surrounding ECB rate hike and how this has caused some fear for Irish residents due to the eviction ban being lifted at the end of the month. We also discuss Pfizer ($PFE) and their decision to spend $43 billion to acquire Seagen. Is this cash-rich company squandering money?
Dividend Updates this week include Inditex, WP Carey and Vonovia.
In the main topic, we discuss how the current situation in the financial sector is influencing what we buy.
EDGI key takeaways include:
Avoid the blast zone at all times! You don’t need to be a hero Look for high-quality stocks unrelated to the blast zone. However, often they hardly correct. Point in case: Texas Instruments, LVMH However, insurance companies might still be worth considering. However, why are they dropping so much then? Ideally, I would buy for instance Pharma stocks right now, or consumer staples Energy is usually neither really a good idea because it’s very sensitive to consumer demand and expectations around that. This is your time to gobble up some high-quality stocks. As an example, JNJ doesn’t look too bad at these prices.
Derek’s key takeaways include:
Try and stick to your core holdings Forget about price and yield. Focus on fundamentals and what can change them Feels like a candy store but blocking out all the noise is important
As always we finish the episode with listener questions.

EP #42 - Q1 2021 Portfolio Review
In Episode 42 we discuss our Q1 2021 dividend portfolio results. But first some news
👉 EMF Discusses
WBA Earnings
Microsoft army contract
.
👉 EDGI Discusses
TMSC $1oo Billion Dollar Investment
For the main Topic, both hosts discuss their purchases and sales over the last 3 months, who the top performers are, and also how far to financial freedom they are
Listener Questions:
This week we received several questions again from our loyal listeners
Phil Segler - Not related to the topic, but a rather "philosophical" question: When should an investor be more greedy: The first time you open a position, or when you add more later on? (keywords: Averaging up/down, time in the market vs. timing the market). 2nd question to the topic in case that you do not cover it: Do you care at all how a benchmark performs?
Taurus Invests - Must a stock have a minimum Div Yield to entice you?
Odysseus - - Having a mix of EU/USA stocks which is the benchmark that you use? - How important is to beat the benchmark? - How was your performance against the benchmark used? From your current portfolio what company you see as a tenbagger?
Dividend Wave - $IBM , $INTC done who is next on the chopping block and why?
Tiago Diaz - What's your YTD return? Who was your best performer? Who was the worst?
Wolf of Harcourt Street - What is an under the radar stock that you think will benefit from economies reopening?
The Stoic Trader - May be something you have covered before, but when calculating your performance do you use TWR or IRR?
EloySnowball - According to this graph, U.S. consumer staples have been the worst sector in Q1-21, still, it’s hard to find a cheap one (probably $GIS and $MO). What do you think, or you see more value in european staples?
Tommy - What do you think about Allianz?
Rafa Martinez Valera - Could you share your opinion on Broadcom
Alex - Do you use any ESG/SRI (or anything similar) metrics when deciding which stock to include in your portfolio?

Listener Questions:
This week we received several questions again from our loyal listeners
Phil Segler - There seem to be a lot of supply chain issues happening right now (Texas Winter, semiconductor industry, other basic materials and plastics, Suez channel): Is this something you take into account for this year's strategy?
Centrino: With a lot of dividend stocks overvalued due to price appreciation, wouldn't it be smart to sell a portion of shares.
Dividend Wave- your longer form feedback on $INTC unleashed.
Tiago Diaz - The upcoming $UL annual general meeting is coming, and there's 26 resolutions to be voted on. Have you considered how you're going to vote? Which items will you reject?
The NL Dividend Investor - Do you have a strategy or rule to buy solid companies that are always looking overvalued? Like Visa, Mastercard, Nike for instance.
Dr P - Which sectors seem to be undervalued the most right now? I've been eyeballing and buying solid insurance companies with good dividend histories since last fall, for example. Are there other sectors worth screening for solid undervalued dividend growth companies right now?
Joe - What are your favorite UK stocks (for dgi or or not).
I want to add some GBP to my portfolio.
ImagInvests - If you could only pick one dividend stock to sit on for 25 years, what would it be?
Odysseus - I have a question for you guys. Which is the best and the worst Investor Relation Department/Site that you have come across so far? I had some bad experiences with Air Liquide.
Michel Christiansen: What do you think of IBM

Listener Questions:
This week we received several questions again from our loyal listeners
Phil Segler - Rapid Fire Questions for you tonight:
* Pharma or BioTech
* Europe or North America
* Cathie Wood or Warren Buffett
Follow up from Piotr - And EU not only WE
I am curious to hear the opinions of our two Experts about Russia especially, low CAPE and perspectives for cyclical as materials and energy. I am building the position there seeing the expensive US and WE
Dividend Dane: Inflation - It’s likely that inflation is on the rise, and that it’ll go above 2% annually for an extended period. Seen numerous economists expect a decade of an avg. inflation of 2,5 - 3.0%.
Lets just go with 2,5%.
How will that impact the way you think, both with regards to investing, and your FIRE plans (the math changes when inflation goes up by 66%).
Rafa Martinez Valera - my question: name a stock that you would love on your portfolio and you never bought because always seems too expensive
Tiago Diaz - Do you keep track of the hidden fx fees when you buy non-euro denominated stocks with degiro? If so, how do you calculate and register them?
I had a hard time keeping track of it, and it annoyed me that the numbers didn't match up, that I ended up leaving degiro over it...
Daniel - Hi guys, great work with your podcast! Question: How would you currently invest a lump sum of 30.000€/US$? How many dividend stocks would you choose/ how much would you invest in each?
Dividend Sjef - My question; I do my valuation, I set my margin of safety but sometimes, when stockprice hits value without my safety net, I just can’t control my emotions (and buy Winking face). ‘How’ do you handle this?

The NL Dividend Investor - How happy are you that you are a dividend investor and you are not worried about the current volatility in the stock market? The volatility will even create opportunities to buy great companies at a lower price.
Tony One millionjourney.com - When do you guys expect to become financially independent following your DGI strategy?
Joapen - Related to risks of a company. How do you track, asses and review them? Our thoughts about popular valuation metrics | Dividend Talk | Eps 38
In this episode, we discuss some of the most popular methods to value a company.
---
0:00 - Intro
3:06 - News of the week
14:47 - Our thoughts on the different valuation metrics
35:11 - Listener questions
53:30 - Stock pick of the week
---
We started with the news of the week:
👉 EuropeanDGI strikes again as we discuss Emanuel Fabel stepping down as CEO of Danone
👉 We discuss Chamath Palihapitiya and why virgin galactic dropped 18%
👉 finally we discuss the US treasury Yield and why it is important that it is rising so fast
Main topic:
We discuss the following valuation metrics: P/E ratio, Price to Book, Price to Sales, PEG ratio, Dividend Discount Model, Discounted Cash Flow, Dividend Yield
Listener Questions:
This week we received several questions again from our loyal listeners
Phil Segler - Which incoming dividend payment do you normally cherish the most? (For me - even though not the highest - I like my monthly $O the most). eDGI: Which CEO do you want to see next resigning?
Dividend Wave - Which CEO is annoying you enough at the moment (and why?) that may deserve one of your tweets-of-soon-to-be-unemployed-CEO*?
Dividendencheck - I recently saw a video from @ppcian about his speculation strategy. Do you also own more speculative stocks/assets or do you focus exclusively on dividend stocks ?
Tommy - What do you think about $LEG Leggett & platt inc. great podcast!
Arrozdetom - If there’s a 20-30% pull back in the market will you do anything special? A lot of people talk about consolidation of portfolio. What do you think about that? How often do you make buys in 1 month? I tend to do it all in one day so I don’t get tempted to time the market. Also i find a bit stressful to look at a stock hoping for a better entry point.
Tony - What financial media do you read and would recommend to others?
Stock pick of the week:
eDGI shares his stock pick of the week. This time a US dividend aristocrat?

We started with the news of the week.
👉 AT&T made the headlines with DirecTV again. Check out our thoughts and maybe a mini rant from european dgi
We discuss no fewer than 7 companies' earnings reports. It really is a marathon at this time of the year. But we love it!Listener Questions:
This week we received several questions again from our loyal listeners
Phil Segler - How did your risk tolerance develop over the years? How did the size of a "standard purchase order" develop? (Example for me in the beginning it was 1k, then for a bit rather 2...3k, now moving towards 4...5k per order)
Dividend Dane - Question - “Falling in love” with certain stocks in both your portfolio and your watchlist is very common. Do you ever try to evaluate if there are better options out there?
Piotr - Do you have any rules or hints for averaging down? Actually, I increased Unilever after first drop and now seeing further drops have no idea about further increases
Tiago Dias - What do you think about using profit margins as a proxy to determine how high a companies PE ratio can be before it becomes a bad deal? i.e: $MSFT has around 36% profit margin, so a PE of 35 might be a better deal, compared to $ADM with margins around 5% and a PE of 17
Eduardo Garcia (aka Enzo): HI DGI, questions for the next program AHOLD DEL... report some issues related to pension programs in USA and EU, this is good or bad? or maybe normal. And why don’t European companies need to file something like a quarterly 10K?

Listener Questions:
This week we received several questions again from our loyal listeners
1️⃣ Phil - Assume a market at ATH, what would you do:
a) Stay with your key stocks, even if they are expensive
b) Wait until markets cool down
c) look for new companies on page 10 of google
2️⃣ Peter from Belgium (via email)
Do you take into account double taxation of dividends when selecting a stock?
For example: when I receive dividends from American stocks in Belgium it is taxed in the US at 15% and then again at 30% in Belgium. So almost half of the dividend is lost to taxes.
3️⃣ Rafa - Hi! I have a question, once you spotted a good company DGI, how do you assess when is the good moment to buy?do you trust only your CFdiscount model for valuation or do you look at PE forward, Shiller ratio, EV/EBITDA, FCF yield or FCF for Equity vs historical?
4️⃣ Richlan - How do you develop a buying strategy. Like I'm having trouble deciding how big my positions in each stock should be?
5️⃣ Piotr - When starting to build a div portfolio would you go for high yield but low growing stocks to boost investing capital at the beginning or would you focus on lower yield but high div growth?what is your favorite austrian stock? Mine is "mayr melnhof" from a dividend growth point of view
6️⃣ Dividendencheck - What is your favorite Austrian stock? Mine is “Mayr Melnhof” from a dividend growth point of view.

This week we received multiple questions from our loyal listeners.
Phil - How much time do you normally spend before making an investment decision? Any "safety timer" so that you do not spend too much time reading more and more documents/news/reports?
Dividend Dane - Do you have views on geographic allocation? US, Europe, Asia (incl. Australia/NZ), Emerging markets etc.
Piotr - how to allocate different currencies and how to mitigate currency risk. Especially here I am curious how do you @European_DGI handle this living with PLN and high fluctuations of it.
Also Letus Compound asked this:
How to incorporate the current rise of the euro vs the dollar in valuation models? Is this opportunity or not?
Lets compound - How long do you have 'patience' with a stock? For example a company with strong and growing profits, but for some reason the stock price doesn't follow.(small stock, underfollowed,...)
East_set - What do you think about market timing. I am unsure if investing right now is a wise decision as many people expect a downturn. On the other hand every study suggests that trying to time the market and staying out of it for longer leads to less returns ?
Rafa Martinez Valera - I want to ask if you have reviewed Logista(LOG)seems like a DGI but very thin margins and 2020 free cash flow (very positive)affected by changes in IRFS 16
Kurt - Which techniques do you both use WHEN to write a call or put on your shares?

This week we are discussing our savings rate and why saving rates matter.
We started the show with a brief reflection on the news of the week.
EMF shared his reflection on the news that Apple is making an update to the iOS 14 policy, which in practice will make it harder for game streaming services such as Google Stadia and Microsoft cloud to to upsell their services. This seems to be just another chapter in the “Epic” battles that Apple is fighting.
eDGI share his reflection on Astrazeneca and the fact that they paused their clinical trial. The vaccine trial was paused because a woman in the United Kingdom experienced symptoms of a rare neurological disorder called transverse myelitis.
https://finance.yahoo.com/news/astrazeneca-covid-19-vaccine-trial-015441346.html
Main Topic:
The main topic was about our savings rates. Why does the savings rate matter to us as dividend growth investors? What were the biggest changes in our investing life that increased your savings rate? https://bit.ly/3jigals
Main Topic:
EMF discusses his top 5 portfolio holdings. He was a bit surprised by the amount of AT&T in his portfolio compared to the other holdings. He has also a high dependency on their dividend when looking at the total portfolio dividend income. For now it’s actually fine, because he’s still in the accumulation phase.
eDGI also discusses his portfolio holdings. His top 5 has both Microsoft and Apple in there. He didn’t invest a lot of capital into both stocks, but the recent tech rally just inflated his positions in both of them.
