Wellbeing Wednesday- The importance of water
When you saw the title of this episode did you do an eye-roll? Well I really can relate, because if my daughter had not shared her experiences from a water drive over a hot and humid summer weekend, I too would have done an eye roll.
However, we need to realize that water plays a critical role in our overall health and wellbeing. So this episode of Wellbeing Wednesdays goes back to the basics.

Wellbeing Wednesday- The Difference Between Movement and Exercise
Has this ever happened to you? You put on your fitness watch and you go out for a walk. You're out for say an hour, but when you get home, alas you find out that you only did 5 minutes of exercise?
Well, that happened to me a few days back when I took my rambunctious MalteseYorkie Jake on his daily walk. So is there a difference between movement and exercise? In this episode, I explore that question for myself.
Enjoy!

Wellbeing Wednesdays- The Importance of friendships
Welcome to Wellbeing Wednesdays which are mini-episodes that focus on some aspect of wellbeing.
We change as we get older and so should our friendships. And yet many of us hold onto friendships that may not necessarily support our personal growth or who we have become.
In today's episode, I address the topic of friendship and why I think it is important to develop new friendships as we advance through the different phases of our lives.

How I'm dealing with being in survival mode
Hi there, it's been a minute since I sat down to record a podcast episode. I've talked myself out of it for a variety of reasons, such as no one is really paying attention to what I have to say. Does that kind of self-deprecating talk resonate with you? Well at the root of this came the realization that I've really been functioning in the survival mode for the last several months. And this comes from working the frontlines and having a deep sense of anxiety associated with that.
So in this episode in the spirit of transparency that was the commitment I made to my listeners when I started this podcast I delve into what survival mode means to me. How to identify when you are living in survival mode. What does living in constant survival mode do to our bodies and ways to mitigate this.
Oh and there's also an announcement, you do not want to miss. THRIVE on Ladies!

Addressing Racial Disparities in health care (In memory of Dr Susan Moore)
This episode dedicated to the memory of Dr. Susan Moore who died of complications related to COVID19 infection after what can only be described as an unfortunate interaction with a white doctor - Dr. Bannen- who did not feel that it was appropriate to administer a course of the anti-viral remdesevir nor treat her pain.
Dr. Moore took to Facebook live video to share her concern. She was discharged from the hospital and within 48 hours was readmitted to another hospital, but regrettably succumbed to the infection.
In this episode, I discuss some of my personal interactions in the healthcare system that in retrospect were slanted by race.
I don't have all the answers, I, however, believe that we should be willing to shine the light on incidents and address misconceptions (such as black people have a higher pain tolerance and so do not need to have their pain taken seriously). We should also be unafraid to advocate for ourselves, as well as demand the healthcare delivery system advocates for us.

Dealing with the stress and trauma surrounding the current events.
Hello there and HAPPY NEW YEAR! I can't believe we are just at the end of the first week of 2021 and so much has transpired. I had to make a hard decision to address the trauma I witnessed the US Capitol being invaded by rioters and insurrectionists. Because I know that many others may be feeling the same way also.
In this episode, I go over some tips on what we need to do as a community to optimize our health and wellbeing during these tumultuous times.

Season 1: Episode 19 -On the Current Events in the United States
It's early June as I record this podcast and with the killing of yet another unarmed Black man at the knee of a police officer and the ensuing civil unrest and protests in the shadow of a pandemic that has taken the lives of over 110,000 Americans it literally feels like many of us have been hit by a truck. The trauma is real. And so in this episode I share my feelings around the events. I also offer a resource to help bring some mindfulness as a way to transmute, the stress.

Season 1 Episode 18: Being at the crossroads- how the covid 19 pandemic is forcing change
Hello and welcome back to yet another episode of Thriving While Golden.
In this episode, I speak share how the COVID-19 pandemic has placed me at a crossroads. Like most of the population in the United States, I recently had my hospital shifts canceled. Listen in as I share how I have made a conscious intention to take a deep breath for the first time in almost ten years and focus on 'delicious self-care'.
When it comes to self-care, I speak about the importance of attaching your 'oxygen mask' which is a concept I referenced in an earlier podcast episode.
Here are some things to take on:
- Create a wellbeing checklist. This is a list of things you choose to support your overall wellness.
- Consider creating a wellbeing checklist for your family members
- Think of things that you can take on during this time. It could be a new project, decluttering, deepening a spiritual practice.
- Think about and perhaps even journal about what you want your 'new normal' to look like.

Season 1 Episode 17- My reflections on the coronavirus pandemic
It's March 30 and it's Doctor's Day. But it's a rather somber day for all of us in the healthcare field as we continue to face the ravages of the global pandemic of covid19. And so I am just using this medium to reflect and share some of my thoughts and feelings.
It is my prayer that this episode will help someone else out there. I have had to face my mortality on more than one occasion in my life as I'm sure many others have. So even though as a global village we are facing so much uncertainty and things seem outside of our control. There are some things we can control. And so as you listen in on this episode think of some things you can control for yourself.

Season 1 Episode 16: Information about upcoming daily Facebook Live and Webinar with Q&A
With the current pandemic in its second week and rising death rates globally, I cannot but admit that I have been feeling a little overwhelmed and sad. Working as a hospital-based physician only serves to heighten my anxiety. So I had to make a decision. Rather than sit transfixed in disbelief watching press conference after press conference, I am doing what I know to do best which is to be of service.
And so for the next 15 days starting today, I will be hosting daily Facebook live sessions. It will be short and will cover a variety of topics. On Sunday, March 22 at 8 PM CDT I will be hosting a FREE webinar with a Q&A session to follow in which I hope to answer as many questions as possible you may have about the current pandemic.
Information about the webinar will be posted on my Facebook page in the next 24-36 hours.

Season 1 Episode 15: Suggestions on how to cope with the current corona virus pandemic
Yesterday, the WHO formally declared the coronavirus a pandemic. This means that most of the world has been impacted by this viral spread. Last night, the President of the United States took an unprecedented move and placed a hold on all flights coming in from Europe for the next 30 days starting tomorrow (Friday, March 13 2020 at midnight).
Now we can go back and forth and debate whether the United States initially took this threat seriously or not. The fact remains, we have to decide what we need to do now.
In this podcast, I discuss some of the common-sense strategies we all can take now, including avoiding the 'bunker mentality'. There is absolutely no need to hoard critical supplies. We are all in this together.

Season 1: Episode 14- The importance of social connection
Hello, and welcome back to another episode of "Thriving While Golden". This is a podcast designed especially for today's 21st Century Black Woman -fifty and wiser who is seeking ways to enhance her health and wellbeing so that she can thrive well into her golden years.
Our relationships are an integral part of who we are. Who and how we choose to associate with molds us in different ways. In fact all the way down to the cellular level. Well, sociogenomics is the study of how our environment and social interactions affect our genes.
In this episode, I cover how and why our genes can get switched on and off by cellular signals they receive from our relationships or lack thereof and also how the environment around us can affect our overall health and wellbeing.

Season 1; Episode 13 Using your biometrics as a simple biohacking tool
Hello and Welcome back to "Thriving While Golden". You may have heard of the term biohacking . It's a term popularized by Dave Asprey who was one of the first people to create this movement.
Dave defines it as “The art and science of changing the environment around you and inside you, so you have more control over your own biology,”
In this episode, I start with some simple tools we can use to biohack ourselves to wellness. They are called our biometrics. I admit, I still cringe as I approach the bathroom scale most times, and I absolutely refuse to be weighed in my doctors' office :)
So rather than being victimized by our metrics such as our weight and BMI for instance, how can we use the information we gain to have more control over our own biology?
Listen in as I share some insights into what biometrics I recommend you pay attention to and why.
So call up a girlfriend, grab a pen and paper and your favorite beverage, and kick back and relax.

Season 1 Episode 11: When it's time to make end of life decisions
Not to sound too morbid here, but planning for the end of life should be just as much a part of living as dying. In this episode, Doctor Eno shares the importance of making the end of life decisions. These can be fluid and may vary in different situations. Tied closely to your 'code status' the decision may vary in different situations. For instance, the decision you may make to be resuscitated if you are found out in the field my vary from the decision you make should you flatline whilst undergoing surgery in the OR. This episode is designed to get us all thinking about not only how we want to die, but also the legacy we choose to leave behind.

Season 1 Episode 7- My journey into Functional Medicine
I recall several years ago when I was in private practice, I had a vision of creating a wellness-based practice that empowered people to optimize their overall health and wellness. One afternoon in 2006, whilst getting my car serviced at the Volvo dealership, I received what I can only describe as a spiritual download of a program I named 'the integrative lifestyle modification program'. After I had written down my entire vision of what the program would entail, I realized that I did not the depth of knowledge I needed to deliver to my patients.
I compared this to having a great snazzy toolbox, but with no tools inside. That is until I discovered functional medicine. Listen in as I share my journey into functional medicine.
Join me in this episode, as I share what functional medicine is and how my journey into functional medicine has helped me become the healer I define as my purpose on the planet to be.
