20. Tim Bomgardner from Interyear Fellowship
What are you going to be when you grow up?
It's one of the first questions we ask our kids. Some of us are still trying to figure out the answer several decades later.
For some, it's as easy as choosing a major or following a dream. But for many, identifying a vocational path can be one of life's biggest challenges.
Today - the Doing Good gang learns more about an unique program called "Interyear Fellowship".
Listen along as we discover how young adults are moving to the mountains of Appalachia and devoting themselves to something radical - a life of service and community and even a life of silence as they figure out what's next while loving people they meet every day.
Whether you're 16 or 60 - we think you're about to get a clearer vision of what it means to Do Good while you do your job.... whatever that may be. And we think you'll be inspired to re-evaluate the WHY behind what you do.... and look for new ways you can do some good wherever you are.

19. Laura Kelly from Holston Habitat for Humanity
Home. It's where the heart is.
A trite saying...unless you've ever not had a home and then, well, it's the gospel truth.
For many, a home of their own remains an unattainable dream.
But Habitat for Humanity is working to fix that.
Today - the Doing Good gang rolls up their sleeves and learns more about the organization started by a couple in rural Georgia in the mid-1970's.
Now, that idea has spread across the country and even around the world.
We'll learn more about Habitat for Humanity at work specifically in Central Appalachia where people are breaking the cycle of poverty and partnering with volunteers to build their own homes.
Since 1985, Holston Habitat for Humanity has built homes for more than 300 families in Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia.
You'll hear how the work has kept going despite the pandemic.
And along the way - we think you'll be inspired to look for creative new ways to help people where you live know what it truly means to say welcome... home.

16. Nancy Fischman from Johnson City Public Arts
Making the world better...through art. "But wait... I'm not an artist!" you say. "I can't even color between the lines, you say."
Stay with us, because the great thinker Thomas Merton once said it best: “Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.”
These days, finding yourself and losing yourself both seem like great ideas. But in a day when we're bombarded by images all day long, how long do you stop and savor someone's beautiful artistic creation. And in communities where the arts aren't as emphasized as others, it's even harder to do.
Today on Doing Good the podcast, you'll hear about an initiative to celebrate arts in the hills of Appalachia. You'll hear how a scrappy group of volunteers is finding ways to turn brick walls, street corners, and even utility poles into canvases of creativity. And in so doing, they're making their community an even better place to live.
We think you'll be inspired by their story bring the beauty of art into your world.

13. Lori Jones from Do Good Goods
Today on Doing Good - the Podcast.
Goodbye 2020.... hello New Year. Every January feels like a fresh start. For so many reasons, that seems like an especially good idea as we kick off 2021. The planet seems to be in the mood for a reset. And that can start in small ways - like cleaning out the closet.... emptying that yard barn... decluttering the basement.
Recently, the Doing Good gang found out about a great way to do a life cleanse of the things you don't need or want...while helping causes you hold dear. It's called Do Good Goods - we love the name. And we love the idea. Consign clothing, furniture, household items... whatever you don't need or want anymore! Someone who does need it and wants it buys it. And a portion of the proceeds can be donated to a charity of your choice. It's a whole new way of Doing Good. Just what we all need in 2021.

12. Timmy Norman cooks up edible works of art
Today on Doing Good - the podcast: preheat the oven, grab your favorite mixing bowl, and get ready to savor something really good.
After a crazy 2020, we are settling in to celebrate the Christmas season with a whole episode about.... FOOD. Specifically, we’re talking baked goods and sweet treats and delicious desserts - all the wonderful things we love to eat this time of year.
But you know the Doing Good gang. While dishing about flaky crusts and fabulous fondants, we are talking about something bigger than baking. In today’s episode, we meet a man who ditched his job he didn’t love and decided to pursue his passion. Along the way, he inspired others while creating edible works of art and turned his small-town bakery into a platform for national television exposure.
Fans of the Food Network saw him win some tough competitions. But in today’s episode, fans of the podcast get to learn more than just about how he’s a winning whiz with a whisk. You’re about to hear how he’s a winning “do-gooder” with the recipe for a great business, a great community partnership, and a great life.

9. Terry Maughon from Doe River Gorge
Think back to when you were a kid and to the best summer of your life. For a lot of people, that was a summer spent at camp - extended time away from family and friends, meeting new people, spending the entire day hanging out with new friends and doing new things in a new place. For some, summer camp was transformational.
That certainly can be said for thousands of people who spent their summer months at a camp in the hills of Northeast Tennessee.
Doe River Gorge opened with the idea of doing good in the lives of young people. Today, you’ll meet Terry Maughon, the founder and camp executive director. You’ll hear how his vision translated an abandoned theme park in the middle of nowhere into a first class camp that draws kids from around the country. You’ll hear how his faith literally moved a mountain (no joke). And you’ll hear how his determination to do good led to a powerful pivot during the pandemic. He’ll share ideas for doing good when everyone around you says your idea just can’t be done. And we think he’ll revive your belief that anything is possible when there is a higher power leading the way.

8. Chad Wolfe from Trek
In some parts of the world, bicycling is not only an accepted mode of transportation. It’s wholeheartedly embraced. Travel Europe and Asia or visit larger cities in the U.S. and you will see people getting from here to there on their bicycles. And they’re not only getting around. They’re getting great exercise at the same time. But in some communities, cyclists will tell you they take their lives in their own hands when they hit the road. Traveling by bike is definitely uncommon. And places to enjoy a recreational bike ride or hard to find.
But today’s guest did what most do-gooders do. He stared a “negative” in the face and saw a “positive”. Chad Wolfe is the owner of the Trek Bicycle Store Johnson City Tennessee. In the episode, you’re going to hear how he turned a specialty business into an agent for community change. He’ll explain how the pandemic served to accelerate a rural Appalachian community’s love for biking. And you’ll hear how his approach and his passion became a force for good in his newly adopted hometown. You’ll hear some real wisdom that can be applied as you do good where you are.

7. Claudia Byrd from Speedway Children's Charities
When people think of NASCAR, they think of really cool, really fast cars with fearless drivers in a frantic race to finish first.
But what many don’t realize is that NASCAR is one of the most powerful engines for doing good in our country today. When fans flock to tracks to watch a race, they also leave behind staggering amounts of financial support for charities that help kids.
They do it in part through an organization called Speedway Children’s Charities. And over the years they’ve given millions of dollars away and transformed the lives of young people in ways that can’t be measured.
Claudia Byrd leads the Bristol Tennessee chapter of Speedway Children’s Charities. Wait until you hear the love story that brought her to Bristol and the fan-favorite Bristol Motor Speedway. She’ll share the incredible story of how a race track became an engine for doing good in the heart of Appalachia. And she’ll share some core values for mobilizing a community. And she’ll give some leadership pointers that translate into any community even if there isn’t a race track in town.

6. One Acre Cafe
In 2020, going out to eat became a pleasure we learned to appreciate in a whole new way. There's nothing like being told you CAN'T do something to make you want to do it more than ever.
But for people in every city and town in America, out to eat is out of the question. Food just isn’t in the budget. Forget about a decent meal in a decent sit-down dining room.
The people at "One Acre Cafe" in Johnson City, Tennessee think it shouldn’t be that way.
With the motto, “To nourish the body, replenish the spirit, and grow the community so that all might be fed,” One Acre Cafe opened in 2012 welcoming guests to come in and eat delicious, healthy food regardless of their ability to pay.
In this episode, you’ll meet Michelle Watts and Ashley Cavender, two members of the "One Acre" team. They’ll share the story of how the cafe' was born, how good food for everyone is changing lives, and how their cafe can be a model for you to do good wherever you call home.
