Franchise Opportunities - Emerging Brand or Established, That is the Question!

How many of us wish we'd invested in Apple stock back in the day, or Tesla, or BitCoin? Early adopters who catch the wave early can reap significant rewards, but what about the potential risk?

If you're exploring entrepreneurship and franchising is your chosen vehicle, you may find yourself in the position of considering an emerging brand. If so, this episode is worth a listen as we'll discuss the pro's and con's of established concepts (often defined as having 100+ locations) versus emerging (defined as under 100, sometimes even under 10).

What the heck is an NFT?

What the heck is an NFT?

Today Jason and Phil explore NFT’s together. Please know this is not investment advice, but a high level educational episode to help others (and ourselves) understand what this strange expensive digital concept actually is! Show notes are below:

The total market capitalization of crypto and NFT's is 1.4 trillion dollars - jp morgan and Bank of America are creating their own financial teams on this

Forbes definition of an NFT: Most simply, an NFT is an entry on a blockchain, the same decentralized digital ledger technology that underlies cryptocurrencies like bitcoin. But unlike most bitcoin–which is fungible, meaning that one coin is essentially indistinguishable from another and equivalent in value–tokens on these blockchains are non-fungible.

Block Chain : A blockchain is a distributed database that is shared among the nodes of a computer network. As a database, a blockchain stores information electronically in digital format. Blockchains are best known for their crucial role in cryptocurrency systems, such as Bitcoin, for maintaining a secure and decentralized record of transactions.

One key difference between a typical database and a blockchain is how the data is structured. A blockchain collects information together in groups, known as blocks, that hold sets of information. Blocks have certain storage capacities and, when filled, are closed and linked to the previously filled block, forming a chain of data known as the blockchain. All new information that follows that freshly added block is compiled into a newly formed block that will then also be added to the chain once filled.

Etherium: Ethereum is a decentralized, open-source blockchain with smart contract functionality. Ether is the native cryptocurrency of the platform. Amongst cryptocurrencies, Ether is second only to Bitcoin in market capitalization. Ethereum was conceived in 2013 by programmer Vitalik Buterin.

A cryptocurrency wallet is a device, physical medium, program or a service which stores the public and/or private keys for cryptocurrency transactions. In addition to this basic function of storing the keys, a cryptocurrency wallet more often also offers the functionality of encrypting and/or signing information.

How do I buy an NFT? Buy etherium and set it up in your wallet, which you can do through an app called coinbase. From there you can go to the NFT market places, theres a few of them, but the most popular is open sea
Can I make my own NFT?

Getting Unstuck - The value of taking small and large risks

Getting Unstuck - The value of taking small and large risks

The Elon Musk origin story is inspiring. After founding PayPal he had a vision of colonizing the planet of Mars - something the majority of us dream of (kidding). His first three missions failed, and he had only enough resources to launch one more mission - which succeeded. Next, he dreamed of sustainably powered vehicles. In 2008, in the middle of what was arguably one of the worst financial situations in American history, he released his first model - which was priced two times higher than initial estimates he'd provided. The company nearly went bankrupt, he used the last of his life savings to keep it alive. We all know how this story ends.

As inspiring as his story is, it's not real life for the majority of us. That said, how can we inspire ourselves to reach greater heights, regardless of how big or small they may be. This episode is all about the value of taking risks - and how to get ourselves unstuck.

If You’re Over 50, Chances Are the Decision to Leave a Job Won’t be Yours

According to their projections, as many as 22 million of this employed population will face a layoff, forced retirement or involuntary job separation. Season 4, Ep#1 - Cyber Security Experts from Cenetric On Colonial Pipeline Hack and How to Keep Your Company Safe

We've all heard about the Colonial pipeline hack, one that cost the company $5 million dollars. How did it happen? And more importantly, how can you as a business owner protect yourself and your company? We'll be discussing this and more with industry experts Brittany Fugate and David Warner from Cenetric.

Here's the reality - 300,000 new malware programs are created every day, and because they often do not employ traditional virus coding, your anti-virus program likely will not protect you. A new hack occurs every 39 seconds. Hackers infiltrate a company's systems in as little as 18 minutes. No business or individual is safe unless they employ the proper safeguards, but the good news is that there are things you can do to prevent your company from falling victim to this pervasive threat.

A must listen!

Using DISC as a Resource

Using DISC as a Resource

We are doing things a little bit differently this week. This is another episode from our Facebook live chat where we discuss DISC and use it as a resource. DISC is a behavior assessment tool to examine an individuals' behavior in their environment or within a specific situation. It is based on the DISC theory of psychologist William Moulton Marston. DISC is an acronym of four different personality traits:

Dominance - relating to control, power, and assertiveness
Influence - relating to social situation and communication
Steadiness - relating to patience, persistence, and thoughtfulness
Conscientiousness - relating to structure and organization

Tune in to Dr. Leroy, Jason, and Phil for an insightful discussion about DISC personality and how you can use it as a resource.

Season 3, EP#8 The Pomegranate, The Sword, and The Myth of Following Your Passion

We have another opportunity to have our dear friend and Industrial and Organizational Psychologist, Founder of The Connect IO, Dr. Leroy Simpson, to another of our talks. You might think that there's some symbolism or unusual story behind the title. Swords and pomegranates have several symbols in different cultures, and the fruit was prominently featured in the story of Persephone and Hades in Greek mythology. Unfortunately, today is not one of our story days. I would, however, say that this is equally as interesting and entertaining. It is just a laid-back but informative and fruitful (pun intended) episode where we talk about business, franchising, brand recognition, dreams, following your passion, and life lessons in general. If you're wondering how the title of this episode came about, you're in for a ride!

One is a single parent an aspiring author that lives off of government welfare, the other is another struggling author that lives in a trailer working multiple minimum wage jobs, lastly, a 40-year-old man after being fired from a bunch of jobs was able to convince a small gas station owner to provide dining services for the customers.

Imagine you’re a close friend or a relative or a counselor, seeing them barely getting by, living in a substandard situation, what would be your advice to them? After being rejected chance after chance, for opportunities that never seem to arrive, what would you tell them? One thing that these three individuals have in common is the belief in what they do and their persistence. The three people in these stories ended up wildly successful because they believed in their craft.

Season 3, EP#2 Ethics and Cheating

Season 3, EP#2 Ethics and Cheating

Have you ever been in a position where you are faced with making an unethical decision?  Today's episode contains several interesting and funny stories about ethics and cheating. From the bizarre event in the 1904 St. Lois Olympics Marathon, which seemed like it was out of a Wacky Races episode, to several recent corporate scandals, that resulted in billions of losses.

One thing to take away from these stories is that most of these unfortunate events started with a small and seemingly harmless unethical decision that rippled to something disastrous. These stories are something we can learn from, something to think about next time we are about to make such decisions.

Season 3, Ep# 1 - The Pig War

Season 3, Ep# 1 - The Pig War

Today’s episode gives us a few lessons on restraint. The aptly named Pig War nearly saw an argument over a slaughtered swine lead to a full-scale conflict between the United States and Great Britain.

The controversy began in 1859 on San Juan Island, a chunk of land located between the mainland United States and Vancouver Island. At the time, the island was home to American settlers and British employees of the Hudson’s Bay Company, and both parties had laid claim to its fertile soil. The first and only shots of the Pig War came on June 15, 1859, when an American farmer named Lyman Cutlar gunned down a British-owned black boar after he discovered the animal rooting through his potato patch. The ensuing argument over the dead hog increased tensions between the two groups of settlers, and Cutlar was eventually threatened with arrest.
After the Americans reported the incident to the military, the U.S. Army dispatched Captain George Pickett—later a Confederate general during the Civil War—to San Juan with a small complement of troops. Pickett upped the ante by declaring the whole island U.S. property, and the British responded by sending a fleet of heavily armed naval vessels to the coastline.

An absurd standoff ensued, and the situation remained on a knife-edge for several agonizing weeks. The two nations would finally negotiate a deal allowing for joint military occupation of San Juan Island in October 1859, ending the Pig War as a bloodless stalemate—save for one unfortunate hog.

Season 2, Ep 23 Are crabs keeping you down?

Season 2, Ep 23 Are crabs keeping you down?

This week Phil and Jason talk about having crabs...or more precisely, the crab mentality! It is also known as crab theory or crabs in a bucket (also barrel, basket, or pot) mentality, is a way of thinking best described by the phrase "if I can't have it, neither can you". The metaphor is derived from a pattern of behavior noted in crabs when they are trapped in a bucket. While any one crab could easily escape, its efforts will be undermined by others, ensuring the group's collective demise.

The analogy in human behavior is claimed to be that members of a group will attempt to reduce the self-confidence of any member who achieves success beyond the others, out of envy, resentment, spite, conspiracy, or competitive feelings, to halt their progress.

Does this sound familiar in your experience? How do you deal with it? Join Phil and Jason to learn how to overcome this common behavior so you can accomplish your goals!

Season 2. Ep# 21 - An Exploration of Leadership

Season 2. Ep# 21 - An Exploration of Leadership

Leadership is a topic that has been on Jason and Phil's mind a lot lately. This episode is not to stir the political pot because we would like to think this podcast is more or less neutral on politics, and we think that’s a good spot to be in because it’s not our focus! Anyway...what we do see is some questionable leadership practices and choices from people in high level leadership positions in our country. That being said, we decided to do a quick review of what it actually means to be a leader in theory and in practice ****we are not the experts, but we have some ideas based on our combined years of service in the military and being leaders in our own households and businesses that enables an interesting discussion on the topic. Enjoy!
Show notes:
The Army leadership Be Know Do
BE – this is all about your character as a leader and is foundational to your ability to lead. It gives you the courage to do what is right regardless of the circumstances or the consequences. As part of BE, you should be aware of your personal core values as well as your organization’s values. For the Army, their values are:
Loyalty
Duty
Respect
Selfless Service
Honor
Integrity
Personal Courage
KNOW – This is about the knowledge and skill sets you need to be competent as a leader and cover four areas:
Interpersonal skills
Conceptual skills
Technical skills
Tactical skills
Your mastery of the knowledge and skills required for your role are essential to the success of your organization.
DO – Leaders act. They bring together everything they are, everything they believe, and everything they know how to do to provide purpose, direction, and motivation. This involves the following three leader actions:
Influencing
Operating
Improving
