Come Follow Me: Mental Health Insights: Season Two, Week Forty (9/25/23 to 10/1/23)
In this episode we'll talk about the Book of Galatians. Many of the ancient Galatians were Jews who had become converted to the gospel of Jesus Christ. However, in time they started to revert to their old ways, believing that Law of Moses traditions and practices were necessary for salvation. Paul helps correct their misunderstandings in this epistle. We'll talk about how the process of change or disruption is critical for our emotional and spiritual development. Generally speaking, we don't like change, but the sooner we learn to accept it as part of growth the more peace we are likely to experience. We'll also review the law of the harvest and its implications for mental health.

Come Follow Me: Mental Health Insights: Season Two, Week Thirty-Nine (9/18/23 to 9/24/23)
In this episode we'll talk about 2 Corinthians 8-13. We'll begin by talking about how there were groups of impoverished saints at that time, and Paul encouraged those who could to help as needed. Paul taught them to not only have good thoughts towards others, but to follow those thoughts with action. Sometimes, in our journey for emotional and spiritual improvement, we have great intentions but don't follow up with actual change. Paul teaches how we can do this. We'll also discuss the "thorn" Paul referred to, and how despite his prayers, the Lord did not remove it. We'll review how challenges can help us grow, and how we need to have faith in the Lord's plans for us.

Come Follow Me: Mental Health Insights: Season Two, Week Thirty-Eight (9/11/23 to 9/17/23)
In this episode we'll talk about 2 Corinthians 1-7. I find it comforting that the ancient saints struggled with many of the same problems that we do today. Sometimes we long for the "good ol' days" but it's clear that every generation has it's problems. Paul talks about the importance of seeing challenges differently. We'll discuss how flexible thinking is generally associated with better mental health outcomes. Paul teaches in these chapters about how to see the blessings in our trials, which enables us to think more flexibly about them. We'll also talk about how when we go through difficulties, we are then better able to help others through similar trials, which makes us more like our Savior, Jesus Christ.

Come Follow Me: Mental Health Insights: Season Two, Week Thirty-Seven (9/4/23 to 9/10/23)
In this episode we'll talk about 1 Corinthians 14-16. We'll review two main topics, related to changes we can make in our lives. The first topic has to do with finding personal peace. The Savior promises us peace "not as the world gives." We'll discuss what that means, and what we can do in our lives to increase those divine feelings of personal peace. We'll also talk about the idea of growth and change. We'll review the challenges that some people feel prevent them from changing, and how a better understanding of gospel principles can help us grow regardless of our liabilities. Changing to become like our Savior is always possible and is truly the goal of our mortal journey.

Come Follow Me: Mental Health Insights: Season Two, Week Thirty-Six (8/28/23 to 9/3/23)
In this episode we'll talk about 1 Corinthians 8-13. We'll talk about one of the promises made regarding our ability to withstand temptations, including the idea that we will always be provided with a way to escape any temptation that comes our way. However, this will definitely require action on our part. This concept also applies to emotional and other challenges. Although we may be afflicted with such conditions, God will provide a way for our healing that will most assuredly require action on our part. We'll also discuss the doctrine of spiritual gifts, what these include, and how they can help us overcome challenges and become a blessing to others.

Come Follow Me: Mental Health Insights: Season Two, Week Thirty-Five (8/21/23 to 8/27/23)
In this episode we'll talk about 1 Corinthians 1-7. The two books of Corinthians were letters written by Paul to the saints in the ancient city of Corinth, which was in Greece. They contain counsel that was very pertinent to the saints at that time. We'll talk about the importance of receiving revelation and being close to the Spirit. Knowing what the Lord wants you to do in your life today is heavily dependent upon your ability to understand the voice of the Holy Ghost to you. We'll also review the concept of starting small when making significant changes. Long-term change is best achieved through small, consistent forward movement. We will also discuss the idea that what we often believe is tragedy can simply be part of the Lord's plan to change us from our weak, natural state to women and men after the manner of Christ.

In this episode we'll talk about Romans 7-16. We'll review three separate concepts. First, we'll talk about the importance of relying on living prophets and church leaders when we are trying to learn more about passages in ancient scripture that are difficult to understand. Second, we'll review how hope and peace can increase as we better understand the concept that trials can lead to personal growth. Third, we'll discuss the importance of understanding our thoughts and how they lead to emotions. We'll review how a better appreciation of true doctrines can lead to positive feelings, while a poor understanding of doctrine can increase negative feelings.

Come Follow Me: Mental Health Insights: Season Two, Week Thirty-Three (8/7/23 to 8/13/23)
In this episode we'll talk about Romans 1-6. This is the first of the New Testament epistles, or letters, written by leaders of the church to local church members. Paul writes many of these letters and they comprise most of the remaining books in the New Testament. One of the themes in this week’s reading is that of hope. When people have anxiety and depression, hope can be very difficult to come by. But Paul teaches how hope is possible even in the most desperate of circumstances. He provides a specific recipe that we can follow to increase hope and decrease despair.

In this episode we'll talk about Acts 22-28. We continue with the missionary travels of Paul and the difficulties he experienced during this time. We'll talk about the concept that trials are not always the result of negative behavior. Sometimes trials are there to help us learn to become more like the Savior. We'll discuss the value of trials, regardless of their source, and how diligent effort can help us prevail. We will also discuss how the Lord has promised to support the obedient in all their difficulties. As we partner with Him and stay firm on the covenant path, we can have peace that things will work out even when days are dark and challenges are unrelenting.

Come Follow Me: Mental Health Insights: Season Two, Week Thirty-One (7/24/23 to 7/23/30)
In this episode we'll talk about Acts 16-21. After Peter received instruction that the gospel was to be preached to both Jew and Gentile, a massive missionary effort began within the ancient church. Paul, formerly Saul, and his associates were some of those first Christian missionaries. We'll talk about the many trials and difficulties and Paul and his cohorts went through as they tried to preach about Jesus Christ. We'll discuss the mistaken belief that if we are obedient, we will not experience major trials and difficulties. We'll review how even though obedience yields blessings, some of those blessings don't come until later. And we'll discuss how suffering and adversity may play a large role in our spiritual development.

Nelson that reinforce the power of change and how it is essential to becoming more like the Savior.

Come Follow Me: Mental Health Insights: Season Two, Week Twenty-Nine (7/10/23 to 7/16/23)
In this episode we'll talk about Acts 6-9. We'll focus on the story of Saul. Saul was a hater and persecutor of believers of Jesus Christ, causing damage and destruction to the church as a whole and to individual lives of members. Eventually he is visited by Jesus Christ who rebukes him and commands him to repent. Saul heeds the call and is eventually healed by Ananias, a faithful disciple. The story of Saul invites introspection to the idea of forgiveness. Did he deserve forgiveness? How would others react to his changed ways? We'll discuss the commandment to forgive and review how forgiveness can improve our spirituality and increase our mental and emotional health.

In this episode we'll talk about Acts 1-5. We'll review the account of Ananias and Sapphira in chapter five. Their story is a cautionary tale about many things, including doing good things for the best reasons. We'll discuss how our motivation is important when we are striving to walk the covenant path. Although doing good things is commendable, we should strive to do them for noble reasons. We'll talk about how being overly concerned about the perceptions of others can be a detriment to our mental health and also our patterns of obedience. We'll review how as we increase our feelings of self-confidence, we can become less dependent upon the opinions of others.

We’ll discuss the importance of the question, “Lord, is it I?” and how answering this question honestly can help us improve in our spiritual and emotional resilience. In this episode we'll talk about Joseph Smith Matthew 1, Matthew 24-25, Mark 12-13, and Luke 21. We'll talk briefly about the Second Coming prophecies and how we need to heed the Lord's counsel to "fear not" and to take things a day at a time. We'll review the parable of the talents and the Savior's observation of the widow at the treasury. Both of these accounts help us understand the pointlessness of cross-comparison and how we need to do the best with what we've given. In this episode we'll talk about Matthew 21-23, Mark 11, Luke 19-20, and John 12. We'll discuss how these readings contain multiple examples of the importance of doing and not just believing only. We'll review the account of Zacchæus, a publican and Jew, who went to extra efforts to see the Savior. His effort was rewarded by the Lord. We'll discuss how our own efforts are often rewarded, and how we are almost always required to act first before the Lord will do His part. We'll also talk about the second great commandment, and how implicit in this command is an injunction to love ourselves. In this episode we'll talk about Luke 12-17 and John 11. We'll review three separate principles. First, we'll talk about the importance of personal responsibility in our spiritual and emotional development. The Lord will rarely do for us what we can do for our ourselves, because He wants us to learn to exercise our agency in righteousness. Second, we'll discuss an oft-asked question I get, "How can I help my loved one choose to go to counseling or get other mental health help?" We'll review some scriptures in the parable of the prodigal son that are instructive. Third, we'll talk about how the Lord sometimes will delay His assistance to us for the purpose of building our faith. We'll discuss how if we can learn to appreciate this, we'll be able to deal with trials more effectively.

In this episode we'll talk about John 7-10. I love the gospel of John because it has unique insights and stories that are not usually found in the other gospels. We'll discuss two events the the Savior's life found in these chapters. First, we'll talk about the woman taken in adultery. We'll discuss the Savior's reaction to her behavior and how He did not condemn her. We'll talk about the importance of avoiding inappropriate self-condemnation. Second, we'll review the story of the blind man who was healed. We'll talk about how we often assume that, if something is wrong in our lives, we must have done something bad. We'll discuss how negative circumstances are not always the result of our choices, and how we can have greater faith in the Lord's plan for us.

We'll discuss how we can make those changes and move forward. We'll also talk about the story of Mary and Martha and how this teaches about priorities. We'll address how we only have a certain amount of emotional energy to get through each day, and therefore need to be intentional about how we use that and what choices we make.

In this episode we'll talk about Matthew 15 through 17 and Mark 7 through 9. We'll start by talking about how difficulties and challenges are not only part of life, but they are a necessary trial in order to help us progress. As we learn to see our challenges differently they can become grown opportunities instead of griefs. We'll review an instance in the Savior's ministry where he healed a man in two stages and talk about how sometimes healing takes time and does not happen all at once. We'll also talk about how learning to think more flexibly can help us see the good in our lives, even when it seems like there is no good to be found due to challenges and mental health issues.

In this episode we'll talk about concepts related to Easter and the Atonement, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Instead of reviewing the scriptures from that period of the Lord's mortal ministry (which we will review at a later date), we'll discuss related concepts. We'll talk about the idea of rejuvenation and rebirth, and how the Savior can help us rise from our difficulties to become new creatures. We'll also discuss the concept of hope and review several scriptures on this topic. We'll learn how hope helps us manage our difficulties, look forward to better times, and helps provide the strength to see challenges as growth opportunities.

In this episode we'll talk about Matthew 8, Luke 7, and Mark chapters 2 through four. We'll discuss two main principles from these chapters. First, we'll talk about the Savior's teaching of putting "new wine into new bottles." We'll talk about the mental health application for this idea, which is that in order to make long-term changes to our mental health, we need to change our overall ways of how we approach life. These changes can be made a little at a time and they are essential for improved mental health. We'll also discuss the example of the Savior calming the tempest, how the differences in thinking affected his emotions and the emotions of his disciples, and how thinking impacts feelings in general.

I've truly enjoyed doings these podcasts this year and look forward to the New Testament in 2023. For this Christmas episode, I've shared a Christmas story from my youth. In this episode we'll talk about the Book of Malachi, the last of the books in the Old Testament. Malachi lived about 500 years B.C. and during a time when the Jews were struggling to stay on the covenant path. We'll talk about the power of remembering, and how remembering our past can help us avoid future pitfalls. We'll also talk about the importance of giving ourselves grace for past mistakes already repented of. We'll further discuss the concept of moral agency and how God expects us to act first. Blessings will come in time, but only after we have make the decision to act and to show that we are willing to do our part.

Come Follow Me: Mental Health Insights: Week Fifty (12/5/22 to 12/11/22)
In this episode we'll talk about the Books of Haggai and Zechariah. These were prophets who lived in Jerusalem after the Jews returned from their Babylonian captivity. The people were charged with rebuilding their city and the temple of Solomon. However, they lagged in their reconstruction of the temple, and these prophets helped them see the error in their ways. We'll talk about how progress towards difficult goals is best accomplished by consistently moving forward, doing small things each day to progress. We'll also talk about how as we see ourselves as the Lord sees us, and what He knows we can become, this can help with maintaining focus and motivation towards personal improvement.

Come Follow Me: Mental Health Insights: Week Forty-Nine (11/28/22 to 12/4/22)
In this episode we'll talk about the Books of Nahum, Habakkuk, and Zephaniah. All of these prophets seemed to have lived around the same time and were possibly contemporaries of Jeremiah and Lehi. We'll talk about how our relationship with God is dependent upon our obedience to His commandments; either good or troubling consequences result based on our choices. We'll also discuss the question of "why bad things happen to good people" and address two key points that can help develop greater insight into that idea. We will explore the truths that our Heavenly Father loves us perfectly, and that so-called "tragedies" may actually be blessings in the end result.

Come Follow Me: Mental Health Insights: Week Forty-Eight (11/21/22 to 11/27/22)
In this episode we'll talk about the Books of Micah and Jonah. The Book of Micah appears to be written in the first person, containing Micah's prophecies and warnings. The Book of Jonah is more story-like, essentially a cautionary tale of how not to act when the Lord commands something. We'll talk about how Micah's background may have helped him better understand the people he served. We'll further discuss how Jonah's disobedient behaviors led to distress, and the distress did not change until he made better choices. We'll talk about how with mental health issues, we need to be accountable and make needed changes if we want to see forward movement.

We'll talk about the importance of prophets, how their counsel can help us avoid difficult, and how we can find answers to our personal problems by following their teachings. Come Follow Me: Mental Health Insights: Week Forty-Six (11/7/22 to 11/13/22)
In this episode we'll talk about the Books of Hosea and Joel. They were both prophets but Hosea preached to the northern kingdom of Israel and Joel preached to the southern kingdom of Israel. We focus on the writings of Joel and two specific concepts. The first is how change, although uncomfortable, is a key element in our eternal progression and should be feared or avoided. The second is how that, in order to make positive mental health changes, we need to align our beliefs with truth. Increasing our ability to have the Holy Ghost in our lives can definitely help with this process.

Some of the most beloved stories of the Old Testament are found in this book, including Daniel's interpretation of King Nebuchadnezzar's dream, Daniel in the lion's den, and the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednago. We will discuss the idea of watchmen on the tower, or prophets, and how they warned people anciently and still warn us today.
