On The Road with Dr Brian King
By Brian
Started in 2012 as a radio segment in San Francisco, Dr Brian King spends a lot of time on the road, meeting interesting people and occasionally interviewing them. In recent years, his partner, tango dancer and model Sarah Bollinger, often serve as his co-host.

Nashville with COMEDIAN turned REALITY TV STAR Shawn Mark
Comedian Shawn Mark has had a rough life. Growing up in the foster system with drug and alcohol issues, he ended up homeless in Nashville when his life took a positive turn, and he was transformed into a family man TV personality on season 10 of Relative Race! Co-host Ash Newland and I met up with him on our recent tour to discuss this incredible journey. Please watch, like and share! Las Vegas with COMEDIAN Kamane "Queenie" Marshall who has lost over 300 pounds!
My new book is about losing weight, and for it I interviewed a lot of people about their experiences. However, one story I couldn't wait to share with the world was of my good friend, comedian Kamane "Queenie" Marshall who has lost over 300 pounds!
We recently met up in Las Vegas to record this video.

Dallas with COMEDIAN Sabrina Luna
I first met Sabrina Luna as a comedy fan during the pandemic. Like a lot of fans, she had the spirit of a comedian and was just waiting for the right moment to let it out. After months of watching the rest of us act like fools on the Dallas open mics, she hit the stage herself. Did she catch the bug or move on to other endeavors? Find out in this episode!

After a show in Fayetteville, North Carolina, I had a chance to visit South Carolina's pastor turned comedian Yuncle Boudreaux. After training in the pulpit, Yuncle, a gifted storyteller, now tours the country as a comedian, musician, and sometimes Santa Claus. You'll love him as much as we do.

New Orleans with COMEDIANS Ariel Elias & Adel Alizadeh
Comedian Ariel Elias has been in the news recently, after her awesome way of dealing with a heckler at a comedy show in New Jersey. Someone threw a beer at her and she calmly picked it up and chugged it, eventually catching the attention of Jimmy Kimmel and landing her a spot on his show. The whole thing made me think of a time, years ago, when we recorded a podcast in New Orleans for my first On the Road radio show. When I first met Ariel, she was dating fellow comedian Adel Alizadeh and I was interested in their relationship dynamics as two comics making it work. She was cool back then, and apparently just as cool now.

Montreal with PROUD SEX WORKER/COMEDIAN Catherine Gagnon
Back in Montreal, I first met the delightful and multi-talented Catherine Gagnon at a comedy show where she amazed the audience by sharing stories about her career as a sex worker. I knew I wanted to know more about her, so I invited her on the podcast with Sarah and I. I am so glad I did. Enjoy this positive discussion about life in the world's oldest profession.

El Paso with COMEDIAN Rogelio Avila
I recently got a chance to chat with Mexican-American comedian Rogelio Avila, someone I consider one of the best comedians I've seen on the road in a long time. Originally from Juarez, Chihuahua, he has been entertaining people since childhood but only started performing comedy to help cope with a separation from his wife. Now, after her passing he honors her memory with humor performing in clubs on both sides of the border. My friend Lea Patrick joins me as co-host for this very funny, and very touching interview.

Nashville with RESTAURATEUR Austin Smith
Years ago, Sarah Bollinger and I were on tour through Tennessee looking for big and original Bloody Marys for my book which led us to the Nashville Hot Chicken restaurant Party Fowl and an opportunity to interview the owner, Austin Smith.
Now, six years later Austin's Party Fowl has branched out into multiple locations, he's been on TV with Shaquille O'Neal and interviewed by Guy Fieri, but he still managed to find the time to catch up with us for another interview.
In this podcast we talk about hot chicken, family, surviving the pandemic, and losing weight while owning a fried chicken empire. It's a good talk.

Fortunately he was able to squeeze me in between gigs for a chat about Buc-ee's, art, and his horribly tragic beginning to his comedy career. Pittsburgh with COMEDIANS Chris Kemp & Dan Jenniches
In 2012 I produced a couple of comedy shows in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania under the name "Fresh Cut Comedy" to help raise some funds for my friends at Most Wanted Fine Art Gallery. Based in California at the time, I reached out to the local comedy community through social media and many talented people answered the call. By now you may be thinking that if you spend enough time with me, you are going to end up in a video, on a podcast or some other kind of media. For a while, that was probably true as this episode implies.
After taking my mother on tour with me for two weeks in 2012, my father joined us in Charleston, South Carolina. We had a great time and they shared several stories of my childhood that I was unaware of. As an obsessive autobiographer, I felt I simply had to record them for posterity.

Tacoma with COMEDIANS Jonas Barnes, Cory Michaelis, & Mike Brody
In 2012 when I first started touring, I found myself in Tacoma, Washington and stumbled on to the newly established Tacoma Comedy Club. It was a night with headliner Mike Brody from Minnesota, featuring Cory Michaelis and host Jonas Barnes. All three were great and afterwards they were nice enough to talk to me for my new radio show. Although they aired out of order, this was only my second interview and episode of On The Road.
Revisiting this episode in 2021, I love hearing how we talked about the specifics of comedy life and touring. I was just getting my feet wet in this industry. In the decade since, I haven't crossed paths with any these guys again but according to social media all three are still performing. The Tacoma Comedy Club has endured and remains open and as I write this Cory Michaelis is scheduled to headline there tomorrow. Ironic that he is the only one I did not get a photo with.
Comedy is timeless.

Dallas with COMEDIAN Mysia Chabert
The first episode of 2021! After spending the greater portion of 2020 in Dallas, Texas waiting out the pandemic Dr Brian King returns to bring in the amazingly talented comedian Mysia Chabert.
Mysia got her start at an open mic night in Puerto Rico, and almost immediately found herself producing shows and touring with the legendary Puerto Rican comedian Chente Ydrach. From bar rooms to sold out shows, she killed it nightly as she rose to prominence in the Spanish-language comedy scene. After several years, she met comedians Diego Morales, Fernando "Panda" Chacon, and Mike Zaragosa collectively known as the "Vatos Chistosos" and with encouragement from Diego burst into the English comedy scene as someone you need to pay attention to.

It has been several months since the last podcast and in that time the world has experienced the horrible Covid-19 pandemic. In a chain of events that seemed to unfold overnight people were suddenly out of work, travel was restricted, and comedian George Redd Speaks was released from prison.
That's right, Prison.
He went from being locked up to living in lockdown. As the world is starting to re-open, I caught up with him at an open mic show he is producing in Lewisville, Texas and he told me all about his comedy career, from his time as an outlaw comedian to funny ex-con.

Baltimore with BURLESQUE DANCERS Candy Del Rio and Reverend Valentine
I was first introduced to the world of Burlesque by some friends that began performing it. First in San Francisco, then I met performers in Los Angeles, then on the East Coast in the Carolinas, and up through DC, Baltimore, and New York. Besides the obvious appeal of scantily clad women, as a comedian I became fascinated with the culture and performance as it reminded me of a throwback to the days of vaudeville. I befriended many burlesque artists across the country and even performed in several shows myself. When I started this podcast, it seemed a natural fit to interview burlesque performers.
Candy Del Rio and Reverend Valentine were two very prominent artists in the DC/Baltimore area when I first saw one of their shows. Their attention to detail in costuming as well as their theatrics made them a big hit. I asked them for an interview, and thankfully they said yes.

New Orleans with BURLESQUE DANCER Holly Tamale Hawthorne
Holly Hawthorne is an extraordinary individual and I was lucky enough to meet her in the summer of 2012 on the streets of New Orleans. She is commonly known as Holly Tamale, and could often be seen pushing her Tamale cart through the bar-filled streets of the Marigny district, selling her tasty creations. She could also be seen on Bourbon Street, from 6 to 8, painted from head to toe in gold paint. Or maybe dancing at a local strip club or in a burlesque show. Or even pursuing a degree in biochemistry. Wherever you encountered her, I bet it was memorable.

New Orleans with COMEDIAN Leon Blanda
In the summer of 2012, I took some time off the road to hang out in my favorite city: New Orleans, Louisiana. Returning to town after living away for so many years was great, as it felt like home again. Part of that was being welcomed by the local comedy scene, and getting the chance to perform at the House of Blues thanks to producer Leon Blanda.

New Orleans with Boobs 4 Bux, TOPLESS street performers
In the summer of 2012, I ran into the body painted members of Boobs 4 Bux on Bourbon Street in New Orleans. Walking down the street in nothing but paint and holding a sign, they clearly caught my attention but it was their outgoing personalities that inspired me to want to get to know them better. Talor, Katy, and Shanice, as they are more commonly known, were funny, interesting, and creative entertainers out to make New Orleans great again. All of them have since moved on to other projects and cities, but this remains one of my favorite interviews from the era. It also may have contributed to my own interest in body painting.
