Comedian Ariel Elias has been in the news recently, after her awesome way of dealing with a heckler at a comedy show in New Jersey. Someone threw a beer at her and she calmly picked it up and chugged it, eventually catching the attention of Jimmy Kimmel and landing her a spot on his show. The whole thing made me think of a time, years ago, when we recorded a podcast in New Orleans for my first On the Road radio show. When I first met Ariel, she was dating fellow comedian Adel Alizadeh and I was interested in their relationship dynamics as two comics making it work. She was cool back then, and apparently just as cool now.

I recently got a chance to chat with Mexican-American comedian Rogelio Avila, someone I consider one of the best comedians I've seen on the road in a long time. Originally from Juarez, Chihuahua, he has been entertaining people since childhood but only started performing comedy to help cope with a separation from his wife. Now, after her passing he honors her memory with humor performing in clubs on both sides of the border. My friend Lea Patrick joins me as co-host for this very funny, and very touching interview.

Now, six years later Austin's Party Fowl has branched out into multiple locations, he's been on TV with Shaquille O'Neal and interviewed by Guy Fieri, but he still managed to find the time to catch up with us for another interview.

In 2012 I produced a couple of comedy shows in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania under the name "Fresh Cut Comedy" to help raise some funds for my friends at Most Wanted Fine Art Gallery. Based in California at the time, I reached out to the local comedy community through social media and many talented people answered the call. Among them were the incredibly funny Chris Kemp and Dan Jenniches who were nice enough to record this podcast with me before the show.

By now you may be thinking that if you spend enough time with me, you are going to end up in a video, on a podcast or some other kind of media. For a while, that was probably true as this episode implies. 

After taking my mother on tour with me for two weeks in 2012, my father joined us in Charleston, South Carolina. We had a great time and they shared several stories of my childhood that I was unaware of. As an obsessive autobiographer, I felt I simply had to record them for posterity.

In 2012 when I first started touring, I found myself in Tacoma, Washington and stumbled on to the newly established Tacoma Comedy Club. It was a night with headliner Mike Brody from Minnesota, featuring Cory Michaelis and host Jonas Barnes. All three were great and afterwards they were nice enough to talk to me for my new radio show. Although they aired out of order, this was only my second interview and episode of On The Road. 

Revisiting this episode in 2021, I love hearing how we talked about the specifics of comedy life and touring. I was just getting my feet wet in this industry. In the decade since, I haven't crossed paths with any these guys again but according to social media all three are still performing. The Tacoma Comedy Club has endured and remains open and as I write this Cory Michaelis is scheduled to headline there tomorrow. Ironic that he is the only one I did not get a photo with.

Comedy is timeless.

The first episode of 2021! After spending the greater portion of 2020 in Dallas, Texas waiting out the pandemic Dr Brian King returns to bring in the amazingly talented comedian Mysia Chabert. 

Mysia got her start at an open mic night in Puerto Rico, and almost immediately found herself producing shows and touring with the legendary Puerto Rican comedian Chente Ydrach. From bar rooms to sold out shows, she killed it nightly as she rose to prominence in the Spanish-language comedy scene. After several years, she met comedians Diego Morales, Fernando "Panda" Chacon, and Mike Zaragosa collectively known as the "Vatos Chistosos" and with encouragement from Diego burst into the English comedy scene as someone you need to pay attention to. 

Tango dancer Sarah Bollinger joins Dr Brian in this interview, as does their daughter Alyssa.

He went from being locked up to living in lockdown. As the world is starting to re-open, I caught up with him at an open mic show he is producing in Lewisville, Texas and he told me all about his comedy career, from his time as an outlaw comedian to funny ex-con.

In the summer of 2012, I ran into the body painted members of Boobs 4 Bux on Bourbon Street in New Orleans. Walking down the street in nothing but paint and holding a sign, they clearly caught my attention but it was their outgoing personalities that inspired me to want to get to know them better.  Talor, Katy, and Shanice, as they are more commonly known, were funny, interesting, and creative entertainers out to make New Orleans great again. All of them have since moved on to other projects and cities, but this remains one of my favorite interviews from the era.  It also may have contributed to my own interest in body painting.

Stan Silliman was a great comedian, author, and all around human being. An inspiration to us all, Stan battled cancer for years of his life yet kept his attitude positive and even turned his experiences into a stage act. Unfortunately, he ultimately passed in late 2016, but he left behind a loving family, a legacy of work, fans, and the respect of his peers.
