DVB Peace Documentary 2022 Award Winner 'Creatio' on his film "X, Y, Z and then A"
DVB Peace Documentary 2022 Award Winner 'Creatio' on his film "X, Y, Z and then A"
DVB Peace Documentary 2022 Award Winner 'Creatio' speaks about his short film "X, Y, Z and then A." It documents the Karenni people and their generations-long struggle for regional autonomy in Burma.
"My name is Creatio.
I produced the documentary film X,Y, Z and then A.
This movie tells the story of Karenni people displaced by conflict.
I traveled to Karenni State in 2018 and 2019.
Since then, I’ve learned alot about the Karenni people.
They have been suffering from Burma’s civil war, from generation to generation.
After the 2021 military coup, a huge number of people were displaced.
I think everyone should hear their stories.
That’s why I produced this documentary.
When anti-coup protests began, people started calling on Generation Z.
And then Generation Alpha are those who come after.
That’s how I got the idea for the name Generation X, Y, Z and then A.
Each new generation of the Karenni people have to face a never-ending conflict.
I interviewed refugees in Ban Mai Naing Soi refugee camp on the Thai-Burma border.
My main character, he arrived at the camp with his adopted parents in 1996.
He was only six years old when he arrived at the camp. And now, he has nieces and nephews.
I am very happy that I received the permission to document his story.
At first, I didn't think it would win the award from DVB. I am really excited to receive it.
But this kind of happiness is complicated.
It’s like we are all in this bad situation but something good happened.
And still, we don’t know how to get out of this situation.
It’s great that the audience knows this story now. I am happy about that.
The main reason I did this story is that I want more people to know about what's happening.
I would like to make it into a feature documentary, about 50 minutes long.
Because I would like to document each generation of his family.
A 15 minute film is a very short documentary.
When I edited it was very difficult for me to cut parts.
I wanted to show more emotion and how they have been suffering.
But I can only show 10 percent of this.
That’s why I want to produce a longer documentary with more details.
The DVB peace documentary I made is only 15 minutes long.
But I will be editing a longer version to submit to film festivals.
I will try to screen this film all over the world.
Right now, I am looking for a producer to help me with my documentaries."

DVB Reads: Ei Pencilo on "Burma Spring Revolution: 100 Days of Darkness"
DVB Reads: Ei Pencilo on "Burma Spring Revolution: 100 Days of Darkness"
Ei Pencilo, 31, is a Burmese author who escaped Yangon during the February 2021 military coup. Her memoir "Burma Spring Revolution: 100 Days of Darkness" documents how she evaded arrest in Burma, and ended up in the U.S. It was published in South Korea.
"My name is Pencilo.
I adopted this as my pen name in 2012.
Before that, I wrote under my given name.
Since 2015, I have published four books as Pencilo.
I wrote a book about my own experiences and what happened during the first 100 days of the coup.
I call it “Burma Spring Revolution: 100 days of Darkness.”
A South Korean book publisher contacted me and asked to publish it in the Korean language.
This is my first time being published in Korean.
I also want to raise awareness about Burma in South Korea.
Burma’s struggle for democracy is similar to South Korea’s
It would be impossible to publish a book like this in Burma now.
In the book I have documented what the Burma Army did to the people.
I wrote it as a record of the coup.
So, I’d prefer to publish it in other languages.
I am thinking of publishing an ebook and a physical copy.
The e-book is for readers in Burma who won’t be able to purchase the physical book.
I plan to translate my book into English so international readers can learn what happened in Burma.
The Spring revolution is more important than my book.
I will try to publish in Burmese and English.
All proceeds will go to the Spring Revolution.
I began writing on February 4th as I escaped from Yangon to the border.
The book shares how I evaded arrest and made it out of Burma.
I also wrote about the protests, and the atrocities committed against peaceful protesters.
Once I reached the U.S., I couldn't finish writing it.
But after three months, I could finally finish it.
My book marks two important days imprinted in my mind.
Mya Thwe Thwe Khaing was the first anti-coup protester killed by the military.
Nyi Nyi Aung Htet Naing was shot at the Hledan protest.
I heard the news about their deaths the day I arrived at the border.
I had never heard of anything as cruel as killing these peaceful protesters.
At my age all I knew about Burma’s brutal crackdowns and killing its own people have been from history books.
I never thought it could really happen in 2021.
I was really shocked."

DVB Athan: A Message for the International Community from Burma
DVB Athan: A Message for the International Community from Burma
Burma's youth want their voices to be heard by the international community:
#WhatshappeninginMyanmar
"The Dictators tell us that the democratic world is crumbling. But here in Myanmar we are fighting for a democratic future. The fascists claim that social justice makes people weak, but these are the values which are inspiring normal people here to do great things. They are the values which we have set aside our lives to stand up for; which our friends have gone to prison and been martyred for. The coup regime would like for you to believe that our struggle is doomed. But we are just getting started. We will never live at peace with dictatorship, and we will never stop fighting until Myanmar democracy has secured its place in a world of liberty and social justice for all. But we need the world's help. Foreign governments must stop funding this illegitimate coup regime which is waging a war against Myanmar people. In particular, we call upon the Thai government to stop buying gas from the junta. This week, Thailand is hosting leaders from across the Asia-Pacific region at an APEC Economic Summit, which aims to 'support sustainable economic growth and prosperity.' But it should be clear by now that authoritarian violence is the greatest threat to stability and economic growth around the world today. Here in Myanmar, they have plunged the country into chaos. Every day businesses are destroyed and villages are burned, and thousands more refugees are created. Just a few years ago, Myanmar was supposed to be, and was in fact becoming, one of the new frontiers of global economy growth. But now, thanks to the military junta's genocidal violence and insane lust for power, Myanmar's economy is being driven into the ground. How can the Thailand government and other attendees to the APEC Economic Summit talk about 'sustainable economic growth' if they are actively enabling these terrorists?"

The book features 14 poets and seven photographers from Burma, either in exile, imprisoned, or killed since the 2021 military coup. This episode contains Mayco Naing reciting a poem from a Rohingya poet in Burmese:
An Ox for a wad of paan
Thida Shania
What does this air suffer from?
My lungs suffocate when I breathe.
Why does the sun look so desolate?
There is twilight without dawn.
How can I satiate hunger?
An ox swapped for a wad of paan.
Where can I hide my body?
Corpses, everywhere in every house.
How can I die in my land?
My kin have been buried alive.
How can I cross the border?
Rivers bleed human blood.
What happened to the Queen of Justice?
I search for her everywhere--
nowhere do I find her.

Cannot escape from this point for a while yet
We enjoy traffic jams
Our daily life is our school lesson
Have a bathe and wash your clothes while it rains
Blow out and save your candles while the moon shines
Do business while waiting for the green light
We have all sorts of news in our arms
Eleven, Voice, Modern, Myanmar Times
What happened in Letpadaung Hill
What will happen to the mobile internet rate
Murder cases during the month
Hooligans wreaking havoc in downtown
The more horrible the news is, the more sensational it is, isn’ it Or to hang in your new big car
Here's sabe, zun, ngwe, shwe flowers
Still fresh though dipped in the water since last night
By the way thazin track is also damn fresh
Part 1, 2 and 3 are on hand if you'd like
What! thazin track is no flower
Let it be if you have no idea
Then what's your line, politics or economics
Then here's the draft Telecommunications Law
Or the Constitution is also available
Still on sale though printed long ago
Yet I don’t know whether it is still in good shape
The Foreign Investment Law is just released
Obtainable in Burmese and in English
We've got Burma maps and Yangon maps too
You can get lost even in your own regions and streets
And a roadmap will still be handy
Until it is replaced with a new one
Will you buy at least something, brother
You cannot escape from this traffic point for a while yet
At least, a Daw Suu Calendar
Or a fighting peacock flag
Just a souvenir

BURNING ALIVE
By Mayyu Ali
The sky is silent
The earth is silent
The blade on the skin of my throat
I scream out and it echoes from hill to hill
Some say, victims can lie
See the wounds and scars on our bodies
Parents keep yet clothes of killed sons
Orphans keep the skulls of their parents
I watched the blood streaming down
Where my husband and son were consumed
Next, I watched
My baby was thrown into the bonfire
Burnt to fuel
Burnt to ashes
Disappeared in the thin air.
