Meet Jeremy Smith, Executive Director of Freedom Scholar Learning Center

Meet Jeremy Smith, Executive Director of Freedom Scholar Learning Center

How does Jeremy get Freedom Scholar students to fall in love with reading?

What is the integrated reading curriculum model?

Why should we fall in love with the problem?

Jeremy Smith answers these questions in this episode.

Since his time as a youth running around Bay St., Jeremy always knew he wanted to be something bigger than himself – something with a real purpose. Early on that took him onto the football field, as quarterback for Bishop Kearney High School. Later it led him to pursue a teaching degree so that he could be better positioned to mentor and be part of his community’s support system. Independently researching the history of his culture and the discriminatory nature of public education in classrooms and in policies against students of color and impoverished children cemented his personal mission to become a different type of educator.

Determined to fight the cradle-to-prison pipeline, Jeremy worked at Freedom School as a Site Coordinator every summer while pursuing degrees in Business Management and Childhood Education at St. John Fisher College. Year after year under his coordination, Freedom School was a community exemplar of how to foster a love of reading, increase student reading scores, cooperative economics, social action, and civic engagement. When Freedom School ceased operation in 2020, Jeremy gathered a group of former Freedom School teachers, students, parents, researchers, and community members to form the Freedom Scholars Learning Center.

Meet Tawanna

Meet Tawanna

Tawanna grew up in Dallas, Texas, a Bible Belt part of the United States. She was nourished in social environments where very long marriages were the norm. Many of the couples in her family remained strong and married for years only to be separated by death. This background served as a strong foundation in her life. After college and as fate would have it Tawanna became a wife and mother of three. While married and raising a family she took jobs in the information technology industry and worked as an IT professional for over 20 years. After seeing her youngest off to college she left the IT industry to focus on the completion of her debut, "TRUST, The Novel" trilogy series.

Her years of studying the commonalities in various technological behaviors and IT patterns prompted the application of a similar logic in life. Out of curiosity she soon began studying behavioral patterns between people in interpersonal relationships, because...why not? Her discoveries were not at all uncommon. Moreover, and to her surprise, she learned first-hand that there was in-fact one exception to her findings. The one thing which broke archetypes and paradigms and that remained constantly unpredictable was the unmitigated power and mystery found only within the complexities and the freedoms of love. Her stories share uniquely detailed journeys of common joys and failures in personal relationships. She desires to understand the mysteries embedded within the power of love and how that power can be used for positive change. Her goal is to inspire us all to the best possible version of ourselves by helping us to laugh, cry, ponder, and gasp at those crazy experiences we encounter in life. She believes that maybe, just maybe, we'll lighten up if we can see how similar we really are and how often we go through the same things. Tawanna resides in both Texas and California.

Smith has 30 years of professional writing and editing experience in both corporate and freelance capacities, which affords her a unique view from both sides of publishing: the author's and the editor's. Now she writes frequently on the topic of producing good content, usually focused on fiction writing and always focused on what it takes to write well and produce content that engages readers.

Meet Roland

Meet Roland

The newcomer author delivers a personal journey into his rise and demise as a St. Louis City Police Officer. He takes the readers on a roller coaster ride of good old family memories to the nightmarish reality of being a police officer indicted on federal drug charges. During his trial, he wrote memoirs as a testimonial of redemption. Roland's case stems from the conflict of his childhood affiliation and his oath to uphold the law. What is certain one can't run from sin for karma is much faster.  The author actually wrote the novel years ago however after battling Lupus he lost his motivation to complete it. Promising his mother, Fumi Karasawa, who recently passed that he would finish what he started. Roland opened his computer to complete telling his story. He also would like to encourage others with determination they too can reestablish position as a productive citizen.

Roland was a popular tattoo artist in the St. Louis area however once diagnosed with Lupus he lost his hand and eye coordination bringing the body art career to a halt. No other choice he had to reinvent himself transforming visual art into literary art. Writing is quite therapeutic for the newly ordained writer. The silver lining is his family support kept him going. "With tragedy comes blessings".

With learning to trust the process I learned to Enjoy the process. My pain had changed me, but God had kept me. I became more aware of myself. I love the woman I have become today, and I want you to love the woman you are and will become. I want to help you with that. -Savon Holt She is here to motivate and empower young women to discover their purpose, to know their worth so they can build strength to rebuild themselves so they can ascend to the next level in their life.
