A self-publishing update: Vella, a day without earnings, and business decisions...

Episode 75 - Podcast reset, a quick recap and three newsletters for writers
Today, I explain why I won't be posting new episodes regularly, share great new about my latest biopsy (no signs of recurrence, YAY!), an update about the month of December (so many things: Vella, writing immersive videos and more) as well as three newsletters for writers. Oh and I have a new book up for pre-order # Most Eligible Scrooge (how awesome is that title?)
Mentioned in the episode:
Three newsletters for writers I recommend:- Leslye Penelope - Footnotes: Inspiration & actionable ideas to help you master your craft, overcome your stumbling blocks, and grow as a writer: https://read.lpenelope.com/footnotes
- Roni Loren's Academy - 30 days romance prompt challenge: https://www.fearlessromancewriting.com/news/30-days-of-romance-writing-prompts
- Better-Faster Newsletter: Join the Better-Faster Newsletter to get the “Dear Becca” coaching column! Every day, Becca gets new emails or comments asking “what happens if I…” And while she might answer a question in one place, not everyone sees it. So “Dear Becca” was created to answer some of the coaching questions Becca gets publically, in order to help everyone. It’s live coaching! Only available through the Better-Faster Newsletter. https://betterfasteracademy.com/newsletter/ Abbie Emmons Immersive Writing Sessions: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLV6pMftb_QTlF4zMNj42GE3A84o4PZOnP

Let's talk Kindle Vella: metrics, bonus, and why I enjoy writing serialized fiction, too.
Today is another episode about Kindle Vella. Now that I've been on the platform for more than nine months, I thought I'd do a recap.

BONUS - Three Black Friday Deals For Writers (2022)
There are a lot of sites listing Black Friday deals for writers such as Kindlepreneur Black Friday Deals For Writers 2022.
The list below is made up of three Black Friday Deals I’m either going to use or am thinking about using.
One Stop For Writers (40% for 6 month plan with BF2022): I’ve been using One Stop Writers for more than a year, I think, and it has helped me so much. I don’t use all the features (yet) but I always turn to it when I’m revising. The emotion thesaurus, emotions amplifier, colors and patterns and so much more have been so so helpful to me. I have also used The Character Builder to help me craft Alessandro. So, if you’ve enjoyed #SweetsForLove and the grumpy yet charming bodyguard, part of his characteristics came from using One Stop For Writers.Inkers Con 2021 on Demand (currently 50% off): I really learned a lot during the 2022 Mini-Con (it had four classes, including one with Becca Syme and another on budgeting which has helped me making profits this year – so yay!). There are 27 presentations in Inkers Con and so many I’d like to listen to from the 2021 Inkers Con. 2021 Inkers Con classes on sale for HALF OFF this weekend only (ends Monday at midnight ET). The normal price is $245 but use coupon code HALF21 and pay only $122.50 (or break it into two payments). Access is for 6 years with 100% money-back guarantee.
ProWritingAid: : ProWritingAid is a grammar checker, style editor, proofreader, and writing coach all in one. I’ve been using ProWritingAid since August 2022. And I personally like it more than Grammarly. The one thing holding me back from the lifetime deal is that my current yearly subscription is ending in August 2023 and I don’t get a pro-rated discount for the other months… so I might wait until then to see if they have another discount. Or I’ll wait until next November. Buuuuut if you’re currently looking to use ProWritingAid, they’re currently running a 50% off for selected plans.
Okay, I know I said three … but here’s another one… 100 photo/vector downloads from Depositphotos (lifetime) for $39 – it’s great for promo or covers… I won’t be using – but only because I use Canva Pro and still have pictures available on Depositphotos from a past deal.

Trying out a new book review strategy and SO MANY emotions about the release of #SweetsForLove
The first #SweetsForLove reviews are raving! :-) Oh and you can get your own copy here: books2read.com/u/3Gwzpa
In addition, I have created a #SweetsForLove Bingo :-) (bit.ly/SweetsForLoveBingo) and I have a #SweetsForLove Team (Facebook group and discord channel).
And I'm also explaining why this release week is *very* emotional (in a lot of ways). I'm pretty calm about the release itself but knowing my book touches readers and makes them smile is ... an amazing feeling. And I may be slightly reflective right now.

Announcements: Summer Break and Self-Publishing/Writing Ask Me Anything
As I said last week I also have so many plans for this podcast. I want to work on the website which would include resources, the ups and downs of self-publishing, the A to Z shorter episodes, and do a few more interviews and tell you more about what works for me and my writing and self-publishing career.
And to do this, a lot of things need to happen. And so this year, A Self-Published Author's Diary will take a summer break. The diary and I will be back on your favorite podcasting/streaming platform in September.
Ask me a question:
And during that time, please don't hesitate to ask me anything related to self-publishing or writing either per email aselfpublishedauthorsdiary AT gmail.com or authorelodienowodazkij AT gmail.com or by voicemail: https://anchor.fm/elodie-nowodazkij/message Follow A Self-Published Author's Diary on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/aselfpublishedauthorsdiary Visit my website: www.elodienowodazkij.com I'm on TikTok: @elodienowodazkij and the podcast too: @aselfpubbedauthorsdiaryWays to help Ukraine:

Ep. 54 - How one of my TikTok videos went viral on Instagram and using Amazon ads as an indie author...
In today's episode, I explain how one of my TikTok videos went viral on Instagram and using Amazon ads as an indie author.
For that video to go viral (it has more than 26000 views) which is very uncommon for me, I followed a few steps. That video also resulted in sales and pages read. My book went from sitting at 700000 to about 70000 and then climbed a bit higher and stayed around 100000 for a few days without any ads.
When it comes to the Amazon Ads, my French ads seem to be doing well. I'll keep you updated.

Ep. 53 - REPLAY - My top 3 self-publishing mistakes
Today is a replay episode from a couple months ago.
I share my top 3 self-publishing mistakes... I started self-publishing in 2014 and let's just say I could write a book about the mistakes I've made in my career as an indie author.
It includes not building my newsletter and so much more.

While Valentine's Day was a nice reminder to cherish and enjoy all the little and big moments and also a reminder to infuse those moments into my romance novels, it's also been a challenging week writing-wise. So, it's a reminder for writers out there to keep swimming (or writing) while making sure to be gentle with yourselves.

Ep. 40 - Keeping track of indie author conferences, updating newsletter landing pages and the writing high ...
Today, I talk about keeping track of indie author conferences as I completely missed the Romance Author Mastermind conference. it does require an invitation but I only saw talks about it after it happened (or while it was happening) so making sure I'm adding the link to it to my favorites. I also mention the 20booksto50k conference and Inkers Con.
During the week, I also updated my author newsletter landing pages to make them less convoluted and I'm currently experiencing the very fun writing high of starting to write a story I've been thinking about for several months now.

Ep - 39: Good news, using Netgalley as an indie author (part 1), getting a spike in free ebooks in Germany (not sure why)...
Today, I share some good news: I had a PET scan on Wednesday and then we saw my oncologist. And no signs of malignancy. I'll see him again in three months but as I'm now two years out of transplant, no more scheduled scans 🙂
I also talk about using Netgalley as an indie author: what my goals are in terms of reviews and reaching more readers and why I decided to put #TheLeftoverBride on Netgalley.
As a self-published author, I use Victory Editing co-op (for one title and one month) and have already received hundreds of request for review.
https://victoryediting.com/services/netgalley-co-op/Also mentioned in this episode: TikTok, Instagram as an author and not knowing why some videos take off as well as IN DIESEM EINEN SOMMER (A SUMMER LIKE NO OTHER in German) getting hundreds (now probably at least a thousand) free downloads without me doing anything (I'm not sure why either).

REPLAY - Interview with audiobook narrator Megan Carter
This is a REPLAY episode. This episode was published earlier this year.
Have you ever wondered about getting your books published as audiobooks? Or are you thinking about working as an audiobook narrator?
This short interview (which wasn't conducted live. I had sent questions to Megan so she could record the answers whenever possible) goes into her process as audiobook narrator and a bit of behind-the-scenes of the FEAR ME, FEAR ME NOT audiobook (which is available on Audible, Amazon and iTunes). She also gives her top 3 tips for audiobook narrators.
This episode is also available as a blog post: http://elodienowodazkij.com/2021/01/27/the-one-with-an-interview-with-audiobook-narrator-megan-carter/

Ep. 37 - Not writing for a few days and a SEE ME, SEE ME NOT audiobook preview...
Today, on the podcast: not writing for a few days, not having any urgent deadlines and a SEE ME, SEE ME NOT audiobook preview.
Next week will be a replay...
SEE ME, SEE ME NOT is narrated by Megan Carter.

Ep. 36 - Learning from other indie authors because success isn't a pie, right?
Today, I share with you what I've done each day to increase my royalties: one step at a time. Between updating #TheLeftoverBride epilogue, starting to format another bilingual book, putting one of my books as perma-free and running a free promo on another book who is currently in KDP select, I am making progress.
Another topic I'm talking about today is dealing with feeling inadequate or not "as successful" as an indie author because those are feelings many of us have at one time or another. And a reminder that success isn't a pie and that learning from other indie authors as well as remembering what our goals are is oh so important.

What has worked with my latest book release as an indie author and what I've learned... And I turned two!
Today, I am doing a "lessons learned" recap for my latest book release as indie author. #TheLeftoverBride has been out for a bit less than a month and while, of course, a lot of readers will read it and smile in the coming weeks, months, years, decades... there are a few things that I will do differently with my next release and things that, I think, have worked very well for me.
So, I'm detailing the top 3 mistakes I've made for that release (which turned into the top 5 or so) and then the top 3 things (which turned into the top 4 or 5) I've done very well when self-publishing #TheLeftoverBride.
I also talk about what I'm planning to do for the next release and about turning 2 (my stem cell transplant was on October 7th 2019 so I am two for my second birthday).
In this episode I mention:
www.bethematch.org (to sign up to be a bone marrow donor - you could potentially save someone life!) A thread by Tessa Dare on what to think about before choosing a pen name. The website I created for www.theleftoverbride.comThank you for listening!

Ep. 34- The art of translation or why I don't translate my own books... Setting up my writing goals and daily calendar.
Today, I am talking about my new process for getting #TheLeftoverBride to the French-speaking market, explaining why I don't translate my own books. After all, literary translation (and all types of translation) are an art. I dig a bit deeper into why I am "wide" on the French-speaking market. More than 15% of pre-orders are currently on Apple & Kobo. And I'm about to set up my pre-order on Google Play.
I'm also setting up my calendar and my upcoming projects and trying to find one thing to do each day to help my royalties. :-)

Ep. 33 - Why the Chemical Engineer was right and the hardest part about writing & self-publishing #TheLefoverBride
Today, I share why the Chemical Engineer was right and how I didn't listen to him but listened to L. Penelope. :-) It's related to the formatting of the #TheLeftoverBride title and how to make it more "searchable".
I also answer questions from Sam (on Instagram) who asked: what was the hardest part about writing #TheLeftoverBride? I added the hardest part about self-publishing it...
I go more into details about:
The revision process (cutting and reworking the beginning) Deepening and adjusting the character arc for Ryan Writing steamy scenes, ensuring lots of emotions. Managing expectations...Next week, I'll talk about book translations/marketing, don't hesitate to ask me a question per email or record a question...

Ep. 31 - The jitters before publication and thinking about the next stories...
Today, I go back and forth between being "done-done" and "just one more tiny change". Those are pretty much the jitters before publication as #TheLeftoverBride releases next week...
https://books2read.com/TheLeftoverBridePodcast
I also discuss my next projects, talking about time management, planning and more.
And I added the bonus episode at the end of the episode: the article I've written for the Ulman Foundation entitled: "Because Sometimes You Just Need To Ask About a Dog..." I've decided to read this article out loud in case it can help someone. You can find more information about the Ulman Foundation here: https://ulmanfoundation.org/ Also mentioned in this episode: September is also Blood Cancer Awareness Month and if you'd like to find more information about blood cancers or find support: the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society has both (https://www.lls.org/)

Because Sometimes You Just Need to Ask About a Dog…(Bonus episode)
Today, in this bonus episode, I share with you the article I've written for the Ulman Foundation entitled: "Because Sometimes You Just Need To Ask About a Dog..." I've decided to read this article out loud in case it can help someone. You can find more information about the Ulman Foundation here: https://ulmanfoundation.org/
Also mentioned in this episode: September is also Blood Cancer Awareness Month and if you'd like to find more information about blood cancers or find support: the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society has both (https://www.lls.org/)
Here's the beginning of the article:
I’m an author. I used to work as a communications officer and as an adjunct professor. Finding words is what I do. Finding words to explain or teach or tell a story. Finding words to clarify information or to show how language works or to create emotions in readers.
And yet, when I got diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in October 2017, words failed me. How do you tell people you have cancer? I had no clue and was worried about what they would say in return—or not say. It took me months to share the diagnosis with people outside of my very close circle. I didn’t have the words.

Ep. 30 - Writing on the couch... Revising and editing in the chair. And finishing my book!
Today, I am very very happy about finishing my book. At the time of recording, I was finalizing it before sending it to my copy editor (cue, happy dance and a very giddy Elodie). I also talk about what I've learned in this process: I tend to write better on the couch and to revise and edit better sitting at the chair in my office.

Ep. 29 - Who's talking? Or why I need to change one scene's point-of-view. And how I fall in love with my revised chapters...
Today, I talk about needing to change one scene's point-of-view and the process behind that decision (mainly related to which character needs to have a certain realization). I also discuss falling in love with my revised chapters, when I no longer focus on each page, paragraph, sentence, word and re-read the whole chapter on a different device than my computer...
Plus, I share some tidbits about my 40th birthday and our 10-year anniversary getaway. The Chemical Engineer surprised me with a trip to Inn Boonsboro (the inn owned by Nora Roberts) and we had a wonderful time. Yes, he is amazing.
And I also open up about feeling overwhelmed with everything happening in the world and wanting to make sure I find ways to help. Mentioned in this episode:

Ep. 27 - Finding my words, writing as a form of catharsis and letting the ending of #TheLeftoverBride simmer...
Today, I'm talking about: being vulnerable and honest about some of my experience with cancer in an article I've written for the Ulman Foundation, reflecting on finding my words again and using writing as a form of catharsis (not only in this article but in my novels as well). I'm also sharing an update on my #TheLeftoverBride revision which includes letting the ending of #TheLeftoverBride simmer a little and more google searches. :-)

Ep. 23 - Revising is a roller coaster of emotions. And do writers get decision fatigue?
Today, I discuss revising #TheLeftoverBride. After feedback from my critique partners, I cut the first five chapters from about 16000 words to a bit over 8000. And it is a roller coaster of emotions full of doubts but also moments of success...Plus do writers get decision fatigue?

Ep. 22 - Going wide with my audiobooks (from ACX to Findaway Voices), some market data and the roller coaster of emotions that is sending your book to your critique partners.
Today, I dicuss going wide with my audiobooks: changing their ACX exclusive status to non-exclusive and bringing them to more e-retailers and libraries via Findaway Voices. On ACX you can now do so after 90 days. And Findaway Voices has a template which you can just copy and paste. In addition, I talk about some market data I found in the US and in France about the audiobook market. I also refer and quote from an interview on audiobooks with Nana Malone. She also talks about her writing process and being herself a book cover model (including her own at some point) because there was no/not enough pictures of dark-skinned Black women to represent her characters on covers. And then I go a bit deeper into bringing my French audiobooks to the French-speaking audiobook market.
When it comes to struggles and smiles in my writing and self-publishing week: it includes the roller coaster of emotions that is sending the first 1/3 of #TheLeftoverBride to my critique partners. I've been hard at work and am currently polishing the rest of the novel but it is a lot of feelings. :-) And more!

Preparing for a bestseller or how I'm adapting my self-publishing mindset, exploring my strengths for #TheLeftoverBride and no spoilers...
I don't know if "adapting" is really the correct term. I've been thinking about preparing the launch of #TheLeftoverBride and preparing for it as if it will be a bestseller so taking all the necessary steps so that if it does, my other books (my backlist) are also ready.
Following my conversation with Ines Johnson about her use of social media as author and Erin Bowman's Instagram post about her own use of Instagram, I'm exploring my strenghts and putting the focus on my characters, creating social media profiles for #TheLeftoverBride, detaching myself a little from my book in a way.
Oh and I also talk about not reading spoilers anymore, and the struggles and smiles of my self-publishing and writing week.

Ep. 20 - Did I always know I would write for readers? And my super scientific writing process of "ohh" and "yay" and confidence...
Today, I am answering two questions I've received from a reader named Amanda: Did I always know I would write for readers? And where does that confidence come from?
I go back into my junior high writing of poems and my high school writing of romance and my later years of fanfiction writing to answer the first question. And when it comes to the second question and the confidence aspect, I try to analyze a bit where that confidence comes from. :-) And how fleeting it is throughout the process.
I talk about my very scientific writing process of "ooohhh" and "yay" and about my love for romance books. Readers pick up those books knowing what the ending will be and yet we still get so enthralled by them. I think that's really a testimony to the magic and the art of writing romance.
I also mention the podcast "My Imaginary Friends with L. Penelope"'s latest episode which I recommend for all writers struggling with their manuscript: https://lpenelope.com/podcast/

Ep. 19 - Getting your self-published books into the French-speaking market: a case study (mine) and finding a translator. And #TheLeftoverBride almost has a cover...
Today, I'm sharing some of what I've learned from my own data and experience when it comes to the French-speaking market for self-published books (in this case, mine): what vendors generate sells and revenue, what price point do I use, recouping investment.
Before that, I also add a bit of info shared by the actress portraying Umma in Kim's Convenience in regards her crucial input for the food element to keep the authentacity (follow-up from last week's episode).
I mention the following articles:

I'm also explaining how I find translators to translate my books into French and share the job posting and questions that I I posted on Upwork for the translation of #TheLeftoverBride summary and title.
I'm also talking about making progress in my revision and the fact that I almost have a cover for #TheLeftoverBride. I've designed two different covers and I'm asking my readers in my readers' newsletter to help me choose. :-)
