Episode 51: From Dreams to Reality, Pt.2 Life lessons from a Guinness Record holder (ft. Michelle Kakade)
Episode 51: From Dreams to Reality, Pt.2 Life lessons from a Guinness Record holder (ft. Michelle Kakade)
In part 2 of our chat, we dig deep to see what keeps Michelle motivated when she's injured, on a very long run; what her passions are, and what she did during the lockdown.
Have you ever had a goal but not sure where to start or wonder if you’d ever accomplish it? Or have you ever had fear of failing stop you from pursuing your goal.
Well, we’re going to take you for a ride so that you can take action even when you’re not sure if you can do it.
That’s what Michelle Kakade did as she shares how she transformed her identity from being tied to others (by being a daughter, wife, and then mother) to being the Guiness world record holder for the fastest time to run the Indian Golden Quadrilateral, 5968.4 km ( 2709 miles). If you do the math, that’s 142 marathons within 194 days. The funniest part is that she doesn’t consider herself a runner. Crazy right?
Did she want to quit at points? You betcha… but she didn’t. She is an everyday Wonder Woman who chose not to stop while being fueled with determination. In spite of suffering along the way, Michelle is a person who doesn’t give up easily and has the capacity to know her limitations especially when it came to listening to her body (and specifically her menstruation but more about that in the episode).

Episode 48: Change Your body, Change Your Life (ft. Paul Walker)
Episode 48: Change Your body, Change Your Life (ft. Paul Walker)
Is there room to love ourselves right now and still want to change our bodies? Dr. Tanya and I say yes. Here’s a fact, I’m 5 foot nothing and don’t exactly have a model like figure, like my counterpart Tanya. I feel pretty good about myself. I know what to wear to accentuate my features. That said, I can stand to tighten up around the middle and am currently working on it. Instead of believing that "I want to change my body because I’m not good enough as I am" or "I will love myself better when I look a particular way?"
Paul Walker was bullied when he was young, partially due to his struggles with weight. Now he runs a successful fitness facility for over 30 years that caters to women, to help them get rid of the negative self talk and truly transform themselves into powerful, unstoppable forces!
WHAT YOU’LL LEARN:
How to love yourself as you are, while embracing change Why emotion only lasts 90 seconds If it goes longer, why you’re CHOOSING to feel that way Paul’s timeless strength training principles:- The heavier the resistance, the stronger the muscle
- For maximum results keep the muscle under tension until failure
- If you don't use it, you lose it
- As you get stronger, you must take on more challenging forms of resistance
- Time, patience and consistent resistance = progress.
Why Paul’s goal is to push you beyond your goals Why mental and physical health must go hand in hand You get stronger when you put in the reps Mental fitness takes time as well, and be consistent on a daily basis Why postpartum exercise must be gradual AND MORE!Paul’s Bio:
Paul Walker is the owner and founder of Integrity Fitness, a nine time award-winning world-class training facility for women. He has graced the fitness industry for over three decades and is a well-known and respected fitness professional in all of Ontario. He has been featured on CP24, City TV, Rogers TV and, various other shows and podcasts. Every year, Paul leads his team to inspire, and motivate over two thousand women achieve fabulous results.
“My goal is to teach all my clients something that will help them go beyond their fitness & health goals. I truly believe to my deepest core, that the 5% of the time we needed to invest into our health, dramatically influences the other 95%.”

Episode 45 - Should I Take Meds Ever?
EP 45 - Should I Take Meds Ever?
What happens if you have tried everything naturally from under the sun and your headache, back pain, urinary discomfort, depressive symptoms or anxiety or whatever that ails you persist? Do you stick it out, keep doing what you are doing and hope that your symptoms will magically go away? Or, do you make an appointment with your doctor and then head straight to the closest pharmacy and get medicated? And if you choose the latter, do you feel guilty or bad about yourself for surrendering to pharmaceutical drugs?
Let's talk and begin by saying that we don't need to be a martyr. We are human and we can bump up against unexpected challenges which sometimes require more help.
Even though Dr. Tanya and I are all about being as natural as possible, we recognize our humanity. Most of the time, we are able to stay healthy with our proactive lifestyle. That said, we are perfectly imperfect and run into challenges just like any other person. We know that drugs can lead to unwanted side effects. We also know that taking them correctly and understanding the right time, place and way to administer them can reduce the risks. If you are the person that can be au naturel for your whole life, sincere congrats to you. For the rest of us, there is a right time, place and situation for medications to ease certain issues. Sometimes, leaning into acute situations with pharmaceutical drugs may be the best option.
Did she try everything naturally to mitigate her pain and inflammatory reaction? Absolutely. Did she feel bad or wrong reaching out for meds? Absolutely not. Will she be taking these meds forever? No. She is on the mend because she used the meds. Thank goodness. She is also getting back to her normal healthy activities such as going for a bike ride with her four year old in the forest.
WHAT YOU’LL LEARN:
When to take meds - are you giving up control by taking them? Fevers - do we treat them & when do we treat them Comfort/discomfort Anxiolytics can be addictive Depression Diabetes and metformin - Vit B12 Fertility medications Advil - gastritis and ulcers Ibuprofen for inflammation, stop the cascade Tylenol - liver issues OHSS or no response to fertility medications AND MORE!To 📺/🎧 to this episode see link in bio👆 www.embraceyoufirst.com

Episode 39: Resting Heart Rate: Your Health & Fitness Indicator
EP 39: Resting Heart Rate: Your Health & Fitness Indicator
Did you know - A normal resting heart rate for adults ranges from 60 to 100 beats per minute. Generally, a lower heart rate at rest implies more efficient heart function and better cardiovascular fitness. For example, a well-trained athlete might have a normal resting heart rate closer to 40 beats per minute. But in Chinese medicine we also see that it may not be good to have too low of a heart rate either.
In the west, we look at the rate and rhythm of the pulse as it reflects health. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, we go a step further and look beyond the quantitative analysis, and feel the quality of the pulse of patients and can palpate 22+ different pulses, ie. Slow, intermittent, fast, slippery, wiry, soft, ropy, thin, rolling choppy, sinking, etc., all a reflection of the state of the body!
WHAT YOU’LL LEARN:
Why checking your HR is one of the easiest, and maybe most effective ways to gauge your health that can be done in 30 seconds with two fingers. Why you should be in the target range of heart rate What to do if you’re not in the target range What a high resting heart rate means What a low resting heart rate means The effect of caffeine on HR The effect of meds on HR Can supplements like magnesium impact HR The effect of exercise on heart rate Tips for monitoring your heart rate We demonstrate how to check your heart rate, if you don’t have a smartwatch Why you should start slow with lifestyle changes to work on your HR AND MORE!Related Episodes

Making love is an excellent way to transition yourself and turn your dial from the sympathetic nervous system (AKA GO MODE) to the parasympathetic nervous system (AS IN REST & DIGEST MODE) to get a deeper effective sleep.
No partner? No problem. Sex, or more specifically, orgasm, with or without a partner, produces hormones that play a role in helping you relax and fall asleep.
WHAT YOU’LL LEARN:
Why orgasm produces hormones and what they are Why some hormones act as natural tranquilizers How they also reduce Cortisol How sleep can be enhanced Why quality of life with the release of oxytocin Why more sex promotes bonding that helps you feel emotionally stable and generally less stressed Why more/better sleep can lead to more desire Why more/better sleep can enhance erections Why sleep conditions like snoring, coughing, insomnia, peri-menopause, Graves’s disease, CPAP are impacting relationships Why more couples are choosing to sleep separately, but still retain intimacy Why are sleep spaces are no longer sacred How pets, co-sleeping, etc can impact sleep quality What if you and your partner have different sleep times or routines Why you shouldn’t go to bed angry AND MORE!Related Episodes

Episode 23: Conquering New Habits
Episode 23: Conquering New Habits
Each year, as we get closer to year’s end, millions of people hunger for change - weight loss, eat better, be happier, work on mental health, less stress, improve relationships, etc. New Year’s Resolutions are habit, but the things we choose to work on rarely become habits. Stats show that 80% of people GIVE UP on their resolutions by the 2nd week of February! Why? Because they haven’t become HABITS yet. A habit is defined as ‘a behaviour that is done automatically, with little thought like brushing your teeth…”. Behaviours become HABITS due to a few things - repetition and time, plus desire. How many of us put our seatbelts on without being reminded? I’m sure the first few times after seatbelts became law we forgot, but we persevered. We had and have an external rule forcing us. What is the ‘rule’ for our behaviours is our own health and warning signs? High blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, anxiety, stress, etc. Shouldn’t we heed those?
Some studies have shown that habits can take 3 weeks of consistent repetition to truly become a habit. James Clear in his book “Atomic Habits” he suggests that new habits don’t become truly ingrained until between 2-8 months! So, don’t give up on those new behaviours you are working on, soon you’ll be on autopilot on the way to meaningful change!
Join Tanya and Mary on this not-to-be-missed episode of HOW to turn behaviours into HABITS, so that you aren’t one of the 80% that bail on their self improvement goals.
WHAT YOU’LL LEARN:
3 strategies to succeed with habits and make them sustainable and AUTOMATIC How small actions around new behaviours can set you up for SUCCESS Why your OLD habits can derail new ones Why goal/habit planning can be done on paper, but they need to SHIFT to ACTION off paper Why there are metabolic changes in your body BEFORE the scale reflects weight loss What are other signs of success beside the number on the scale? Even type A personalities who dive in can be overwhelmed Don’t bite off more than you can chew - better eating, better sleep AND exercise Focus on your most CRITICAL need first, make it a success then tackle the next Why #babystepstosuccess will get you there! Be realistic; plan/schedule; create habits with support as needed; track progress; congratulate yourself!Related Episodes:

He is the only person on the planet who has climbed the death zones of 7 highest summits in 7 continents, skied the North and South Pole, crossed four deserts, and ran ultramarathons (100 - 250 km) in crazy treacherous conditions. As you will soon find out, he was not a natural born athlete. In fact, Len considers himself an everyday human who partied hard, ate takeout, drank beer and smoked cigars for decades. At the age of 48, he woke up and decided to try something new, something that would scare him.
No matter what your fitness level (whether you are a beginner or an extreme athlete) or where you are at in life, Len will move you as he shares many life lessons through his stories through his successes, failures and near death experiences.
Deepak Chopra says, “It’s never too late to begin creating the bodies we want instead of the ones we mistakenly assume we are stuck with.”
WHAT YOU’LL LEARN:
Why Len is the ONLY person to have ever summited 7 peaks! Age is merely a number, and you’re never too advanced to make life-altering changes to diet, exercise and ambition! How Len conquered his fear of heights Why he needs something each day to look forward to How to ‘live in the moment’ The role and POWER of gratitude in his life Why baby steps will get you there! How FOCUS and willpower can overrule distractions, pain and suffering Why emotions didn’t get in the way of action and fulfilling his goals and purpose How he survived TWO near-death experiences Why he SHOULD be in the Guinness Book of Records, but isn’t How and WHY he skied to both the North and South poles Why he's not strictly doing this for himselfFind out more at @TrekkingforKids or https://trekkingforkids.org/

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN:

It might be fitness, work, relationships, nutrition, but keep in mind they go hand in hand How starting small by setting short term goals for 3 months can lead to a massive shift No matter what we have been given through genetics, when we SHIFT our mindset, we can shift and change our genes through thoughts How we are able to turn on healthy genes or silence unhealthy ones, using the power of positive thoughts, beliefs and actions What is the Nocebo Effect, and how does it impact people during a pandemic? The same days keep repeating, the same patterns keep repeating? It’s time to break the cycle and change your story, for GOOD! Tanya and Mary share real world examples of people who thought they reached the end of their stories and suicide was the only way out, only to get help and realize that they still had many chapters in their story still to write.

Episode 3: When to Nourish You (Part 1)
In our past episode we covered WHY it’s important, today we are talking about WHEN to nourish you and what does this look like.
We were always taught the first meal of the day is the most important.
Myth or fact? We will unveil the truth about and discuss:
- How the food industry has impacted our choices
- How sugar impacts fat and metabolism
- Where did this concept come from
- When the best time is to eat our first meal
- Concept of fasting- what it is; the science; the health benefits when done correctly
- Fasting and weight loss.
Depending on your body type and time of life, you may forego intermittent fasting. Always seek the medical advice of your health provider. More on this in When to Nourish You (Part 2).

Episode 2: Why it is a Necessity to Nourish You Now
Nourishment is one of the Pillars of good health. Before we get into specifics about what to nourish you with, it’s fundamental to know why it is important to nourish you.
In this episode, we want to help you identify your Why. Have you ever said to yourself, I should eat better and eat less (or more) but you don’t do it and if you do, it doesn’t last? The truth is, unless you know your “why”, it’s difficult to take action or make lasting changes to your life even though you know it would have you feeling healthier.
Today’s episode:
- Share our personal stories, our ‘why’s’ to take nutrition and nourishment seriously having family members with Type 2 diabetes, a motivating force for us to avoid chronic illness
- Pillar of good health
- Food As Medicine vs. poison)
