According to the most recent data by the Census Bureau “Almost two-thirds (65 percent) of children, lived in households that participated in at least one or more of the following government aid programs: Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), Medicaid, and the National School Lunch Program.”
So when the proposed fiscal government budget aims to cut important health and welfare programs that a majority of children in the US rely on, citizens and lawmakers on both sides of the aisle fought back.
On the program today, Thomas Huelskoetter, Policy Analyst for the Health Policy team at the Center for American Progress. His recent piece focuses on the major changes within the fiscal budget and how these proposed changes will impact families.

US District Court judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos ruled in Texas recently that SB 14, the voter ID Bill passed in 2011 was passed with the intent to discriminate against minority voters. This is something civil rights leaders, voting rights advocates and legal scholars have been fighting against for years. It begs the question, would this same level of advocacy be applied to other cases like this across the country.
I’m not a lawyer, but good thing I know a few good ones. On the program today, Ezra Rosenberg, Co-Director of the Voting Rights project at the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law where he oversees all voting rights litigation will explain what this means for Texas and other voter ID laws that have popped up over the years.
