86. Alien vs Predator (2004)

THE TRIFECTA IS BACK! It was Corbin's turn to pick and franchise and he chose one near and dear to his heart. Alien vs Predator (2004)! Some say this movie hasn't aged well, some say it is one of the worst examples of PG-13 Horror, and some even say this movie is aggressively mediocre. These statements are all objectively correct; however they don't explain just how weird of an experience it is to have seen this movie contemporary to when it released and then watching it again almost 20 years later with a critical eye. Just how critical are our eyes? Why does Bobby have a false memory involving this movie? Most importantly though, is it essential? ************************************************** TIMECODES 0:00 - Intro 2:26 - Spoiler Warning 3:35 - Synopsis 4:50 - Discussion 37:23 - Final Review 44:00 - Is it essential? 49:29 - Socials, Suggestions, Sign Off ************************************************** Rate and subscribe!  Follow us below for more from us and join our Discord for a chat.  We're always open to suggestions on future movies, games, shows, or books to review. ************************************************** Discord: https://discord.gg/mAhMCcvQGk Socials: @EssentialScares | Linktree ************************************************** Follow the hosts: @Corbangarang @TheRedWeenie @Asealpunter

85. See No Evil 2 (2014)

85. See No Evil 2 (2014)

In the final episode of the Corbinless arc, Bobby and Allen break down just how purely mediocre See No Evil 2 (2014) truly is!  Make no mistake it is CERTAINLY a better movie than its predecessor, however that is a hilariously low bar to pass.  I'm potentially being a bit too harsh, but this film does not need to exist at all.  Is it better?  Yes.  Did we enjoy it more?  That's a little harder to answer.  While See No Evil (2006) is awful, it is often quite funny. So what are we supposed to do with a movie that is better, but also worse?  Why did they have to show THAT scene again?  Is it essential? ************************************************** TIMECODES 0:00 - Intro 1:13 - Spoiler Warning 2:24 - Synopsis 3:44 - Discussion 31:57 - Final Review 36:40 - Is it essential? 40:36 - Socials, Suggestions, Sign Off ************************************************** Rate and subscribe!

84. See No Evil (2006)

In a week where Bobby and Allen have been given the reigns to the show while Corbin is off galivanting in Disney World the show basically goes off the rails without Corbin's guiding presence.  Dear listener we knew this would happen so we filled these two weeks of Corbinlessness with a duology that does not need to taken seriously in any capacity, See No Evil.  This movie is one of the most unintentionally funny film we have watched for the show in awhile.  There is almost nothing to take seriously in this film even though the movie REALLY wants the audience to care for awful characters.  How funny is it?  Are there any chokeslams? 83. Hell House LLC 3 Lake of Fire (2019)

The time has come dive fully into over the top Christ like metaphors. Today we wrap up the Hell House Saga with Hell House LLC 3 Lake of Fire (2019).  We have had an absolute blast coming back around and finishing this series off, which was not exactly what we expected.  Found footage horror has a hard time capturing the magic of what makes it scary and intense, yet these 3 movies have managed to do it three separate times.  Its astounding and very rare to see in the genre.  However, we have a job to do on this show, and as you know that is to determine if Hell House LLC 3 is essential. Following up a movie we all loved on this show is Hell House LLC 2: The Abaddon Hotel!  This show we talk much more about the negatives of this film than we do the positives, but truly understand we all did thoroughly enjoy this film.  Actually scary found footage movies are hard enough to come by, and this may just be the scariest of them all.  How well does this sequel hold up to the original?  Why are there no likeable characters in this movie? 80. Ghoulies 3: Ghoulies Go to College (1991)

Ghoulies 3 is exactly what you think it is.  A movie will little to no effort that feels as if it is just phoning in most if not all of the production.  Does this mean the movie is bad?  Oh, certainly.  However, there are bits and pieces of fun to be had throughout the film, but they by no means outweigh the malaise that is the rest of this movie.  We often laud bad films that are actually fun, this is not one of them.  Is it so bad it needs to be seen by the horror audience as a whole? 79. Ghoulies 2 (1988)

79. Ghoulies 2 (1988)

I cannot explain just how unironically good Ghoulies 2 is in the written medium.  It makes zero sense that this ridiculous movie is a blast from start to finish.  The antics of the Ghoulies are better, the puppets are better, the horror is better, quite literally everything about Ghoulies 2 is better than Ghoulies.  This is so profound this episode may be the first existential crisis that Bobby has ever had on the show...  The real question though how to be if Ghoulies 2 is essential.  It can't be, right? ************************************************** TIMECODES 0:00 - Intro 1:10 - Spoiler Warning 2:11 - Synopsis 3:34 - Discussion 26:50 - Final Review 34:00 - Is it essential? 39:31 - Socials, Suggestions, Sign Off ************************************************** Rate and subscribe!

WOAH Essential Scares on SATURDAY?!?!?! Slight scheduling issues aside, this week we are sitting down to talk about the remake of the classic film the Texas Chainsaw Massacre!  Often times coming into an episode we talk about how we think each other will enjoy or not enjoy the movie of the week.  This is a situation where that discussion was not exactly correct.  Allen hates this film, Bobby and Corbin quite enjoyed this one comparatively.  The reasons are deep and numerous as to why this divide happened, but to know you will need to tune in! ************************************************** TIMECODES 0:00 - Intro 0:58 - Spoiler Warning 1:46 - Synopsis 2:17 - Discussion 40:36 - Final Review 45:30 - Is it essential? 51:47 - Socials, Suggestions, Sign Off ************************************************** Rate and subscribe!

If there was ever a duology that benefits from viewing close to each other, The Shining and Doctor Sleep benefit GREATLY by watching in close succession.  Doctor Sleep is unironically the sequel no one asked for, but its great that it exists to bring life to this level of the Tower in Stephen Kings universe.  If you enjoy a Bobby and Allen gush fest well this is the second episode in a row where that is going to be the case.  Will Doctor Sleep be able to hold up to its predecessor? 70. Insidious (2010)

70. Insidious (2010)

Insidious probably has the most jump scares per capita compared to just about any other movie that exists.  It does heavily rely on these for the core crux of the horror, which is one of the larger issues with this film.  There is nothing really scary in this film minus the jump scares and MAYBE the sound track. All in all, Insidious is one of those films that is more known for what the director did after it compared to the movie itself.  In this case that was the massive Conjuring franchise, so what do we do with a movie like Insidious?  Listen in to find out! ************************************************** TIMECODES 0:00 - Intro 1:04 - Spoiler Warning 2:03 - Synopsis 2:50 - Discussion 33:41 - Final Review 37:44 - Is it essential? 42:21 - Socials, Suggestions, Sign Off ************************************************** Rate and subscribe!

66. My Best Friend's Exorcism (2022)

This week we had the misfortune of experiencing My Best Friend's Exorcism (2022)!  I cannot lie, this movie is a mess of wasted opportunities and cowardice galore.  This movie is the softest R rated movie we have seen in a very long time, minus the language this film does NOTHING to earn an R rating.  The reason I even bring this up is because it shows that this film completely missed the mark on just about all fronts.  How bad does a movie have to be to be endearing?  Should we be judging this movie what what it isn't instead of what it is? We have made it back around to the Horror Anthology classic, V/H/S (2012).  One of the films in part responsible for a revival in short form horror, VHS manages to set the tone of both the film itself and the franchise it would become from it's very first short.  The 5 short stories all told with some connecting fibers in between all have a common feel of horror more than many other movies we have covered for the show.  Just how scary are these films? 64. The Purge (2013)

In our backfill month, it only seemed appropriate to sit down and talk about the alternate history classic The Purge (2013)!  This franchise has one of the most recognizable aesthetics in recent memory.  This movie does the leg work for the birth of a massively popular franchise, its amazing it took us this long to finally go back and cover it.  A movie sent in an alternate America where 1 time per year all crime is legal, and many Americans seem to participate in this slaughter.  The haves and the have nots are on full display in this completely apolitical film.  Regardless of all of that though, as much as we have gushed about the aesthetic of this film does that push it over the edge into the essential territory?  Listen in and find out! The Exorcist (1973) is a movie without reproach.  A vast majority of this show is purely Bobby and Allen gushing about just how much they loved the film.  There are times in the show were we keep the wall up in terms of our opinions on the movie too early on.  This is not one of them.  Whether its the perfect pacing, horrifying imagery, or ominous soundtrack The Exorcist is the perfect possession film.  All other possession films are trying to do what the Exorcist did.  Regardless of that though, we have to answer the all important question.  Is it essential? B4. Possessor (2020)

This week on Essential Scares we dig into the vault to pull out our thoughts on an often referenced movie, Possessor (2020)!  Brandon Cronenberg, following in the footsteps of this father, brings an absolute masterpiece of body and techno horror that we still reference on the show.  Listen in and dive into the deep lore of Essential Scares and see just how blown away we are by this beautifully horrifying world.  As a reminder this show is recorded before the days of Essential Scares proper, so the essential discussion will not be in this episode.  We will be back with our regularly scheduled show next week! ************************************************** Rate and subscribe!  Follow us below for more from us and join our Discord for a chat.  We're always open to suggestions on future movies, games, shows, or books to review. ************************************************** Discord: https://discord.gg/aXsWGtFA6j Socials: @EssentialScares | Linktree ************************************************** Follow the hosts: @Corbangarang @TheRedWeenie @Asealpunter

62. Resident Evil (2022)

We have another entry in the Resident Evil franchise and this one was certainly something.  Corbin and Allen are massive fans of the absurdity that is Resident Evil, and this show left us wanting.  It's hard to pin down just how badly this show misses the mark.  Whether its the bad writing, massive plot holes, or young adult inspired fan fiction Resident Evil (2022) just consistently misses the mark.  BUT we have lambasted movies and still called them essential, will that happen today?  Find Out now! ************************************************** TIMECODES 0:00 - Intro 1:16 - Spoiler Warning 1:49 - Synopsis 2:45 - Discussion 29:26 - Final Review 37:31 - Is it essential? 42:26 - Socials, Suggestions, Sign Off ************************************************** Rate and subscribe!

Here on Essential Scares we try to stay on top of release as much as possible, however VHS 94 slipped through the cracks last year.  Now, we are going to remedy that with our thoughts on the anthology horror film!  This film is comprised of 4 ideas for horror that don't necessarily have enough to be full fledged movies, but end up being solidly paced short films.  Does this film have 4 chances to be essential? 60. Bodies Bodies Bodies (2022)

This week we join a party in progress in the form of Bodies Bodies Bodies (2022)!  This movie aimed directly into the veins of Zoomers nationwide, and it certainly is a valiant attempt however whether or not it manages to stick the landing is up for debate.  Our cast of Twitter caricatures decide that they want to play their favorite game, Bodies Bodies Bodies. It's basically Werewolf, or more commonly known now Among Us.  Everything turns quite sinister when a friend ends up dead for real.  How effective is the horror of this film that is largely lit with iPhones?  Is this movie going to be the hit that captures the humor of ZOomers?  Most importantly though, is it essential? ************************************************** TIMECODES 0:00 - Intro 1:02 - Spoiler Warning 1:32 - Synopsis 2:19 - Discussion 35:10 - Final Review 38:15 - Is it essential? 42:35 - Socials, Suggestions, Sign Off ************************************************** Rate and subscribe!

The fifth (or fifteenth, depending on how you count) entry in a major franchise is never an easy place to be, but director Dan Trachtenberg of 10 Cloverfield Lane fame took on the task in this Hulu original flick. What's going on, guys! This week on Essential Scares, we celebrated the 4th of July and did not have time to record our episode on Get Out - instead, we pulled this episode from the vault for your listening pleasure. This was a review we did when Godzilla vs. Kong was brand new for our previous show that turned into Essential Scares. Though we do not have an "Is it essential?" discussion, the bones of what the show is now are there, and we do stand by our scores at the end of the episode. This may be the most anticipated movie we have covered so far!  Black Phone (2022) is a movie that has been delayed time and time again due to the obvious factors of the past 2 years.  Was it worth the wait?  I can't give away too much yet, but I will say we did quite enjoy this film as a whole.  Also it was the first time we as a cast watched a movie for the show all in the same place!  The performance that Ethan Hawke gives as the Grabber is stunning.  However, does a phenomenal performance for the main villain make a movie essential? Wrapping up our Irish themed month we, somewhat unintentionally, watched the most Irish horror movie we could find, Rawhead Rex!  There is something to be said for bad horror movies that seem to have one absolutely captivating scene, and I don't think we have had a more clear example of it on the show so far.  We definitely had fun watching this one, but it also left us wanting in many ways.  Clive Barker hated this movie so much we received Hellraiser because of it, and that is a trade I think we here on the show will make 100 times out of 100.  Regardless of that though, was Rawhead (Rex) a solid horror villian?  Did THAT scene go on too long?  Most importantly though, is it essential? ************************************************** TIMECODES 0:00 - Intro 1:47 - Spoiler Warning 2:23 Synopsis 2:46 - Discussion 29:20 - Final Review 34:47 - Is it essential? 42:00 - Socials, Suggestions, Sign Off ************************************************** Rate and subscribe!  Follow us below for more from us and join our Discord for a chat.  We're always open to suggestions on future movies, games, shows, or books to review. ************************************************** Discord: https://discord.gg/aXsWGtFA6j Socials: @EssentialScares | Linktree ************************************************** Follow the hosts: @Corbangarang @TheRedWeenie @Asealpunter ************************************************** Credit to the wonderful musician who made the music for the Irish Jig at the end of the show! 40. Leprechaun (1993)

Centering a month around St. Patrick's Day had to include Leprechaun (1993)!  Warwick Davis absolutely steals the spotlight every single time he is on the screen, and unfortunately the other characters are all awful.  We take a good amount of time to talk about all the things we hate about this film, but none of us truly hate the film.  How does this movie flirt with being a racist stereotype of Irish Mythology yet not end up offensive?  How did Rachel Green end up in New York City? Most importantly though, is it essential? ************************************************** TIMECODES 0:00 - Intro 1:18 - Spoiler Warning 2:20 Synopsis 3:05 - Discussion 36:44 - Final Review 40:25 - Is it essential? 46:17 - Socials, Suggestions, Sign Off ************************************************** Rate and subscribe!

39. Maniac Cop (1988)

Rolling on through our March Madness month, we bring you our thoughts on the oddly centrist movie Maniac Cop (1988)!  This movie meanders quite a bit, but ultimately finds a way to make a strangely interesting point with it's own politics.  Regardless of that though, do we as horror fans deserver a movie with Tom Atkins AND Bruce Campbell?  Is the cover art of this movie great or terrible?  Most importantly though, is it essential? ************************************************** TIMECODES 0:00 - Intro 0:47 - Spoiler Warning 2:28 Synopsis 5:53 - Discussion 30:32 - Final Review 36:16 - Is it essential? 44:09 - Socials, Suggestions, Sign Off ************************************************** Rate and subscribe!

Hillybilly horror month had to conclude with new Texas Chainsaw Massacre(2022)!  Our thoughts come in a little late compared to the rest of the world, but that is not going to stop us from ripping into this "film".  How old is Leatherface in this film?  What was the message of this movie? 37. The Hills Have Eyes (1977)

As Hillbilly Horror month continues it seemed fitting to breakdown The Hills Have Eyes (1977).  This movie, admittedly inspired by The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), is one that is fairly well known in the horror zeitgeist, but just HOW well known is it?  Does this movie offer a gripping tense experience that keeps you engaged? Alternatively, is this movie one that has its moments but just doesn't live up to the source material?  Most importantly though, is it essential?  ************************************************** TIMECODES 0:00 - Intro 0:56 - Spoiler Warning 1:30 - Discussion 33:48 - Final Review 39:02 - Is it essential? 46:31 - Socials, Suggestions, Sign Off ************************************************** Rate and subscribe!

This week on the chopping block we have Wrong Turn (2003)!  We started the month with the undeniable classic, so naturally this week we decided to break down a movie that might be a classic?  We go into it much more in detail during the show, but this movie does make the answer more complicated than we expected.  Do the moments of brilliance outshine the malaise of the rest of this movie?  Was Mr. Protagonist a doctor or drug addict?  Most importantly though, is it essential? ************************************************** TIMECODES 0:00 - Intro 1:09 - Spoiler Warning 1:43 - Synopsis 2:07 - Discussion 35:43 - Final Review 39:45 - Is it essential? 48:10 - Socials, Suggestions, Sign Off ************************************************** Rate and subscribe!

35. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)

Kicking off our hillbilly horror month, there was none other we could begin with besides for The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974).  This movie is well known to horror and non-horror fans alike as an absolute classic. This macabre movie is simultaneously beautiful in its own grotesque way.  However, does this movie live up to its own hype?  Does it leave too much up to your imagination?  Most importantly though, is it essential? ************************************************** TIMECODES 0:00 - Intro 1:11 - Spoiler Warning 2:25 - Synopsis 3:31 - Discussion 40:56 - Final Review 46:11 - Is it essential? 52:22 - Socials, Suggestions, Sign Off ************************************************** Rate and subscribe!

33. I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997)

Rounding out our Scream rip offs before we get to Scream (2022), we have our thoughts on I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997).  While this film tries, and fails, to tell a whodunit type of story, there are some fairly iconic scenes in this film that we have some thoughts on.  Largely, I Know What You Did Last Summer is not scary, but it does have some moments worthy of gushing over.  Does this movie deserve to be essential based around how much it is parodied in media? Should the ending be changed slightly to give it a more serious tone?  Most importantly, is it essential? ************************************************** TIMECODES 0:00 - Intro 1:27 - Spoiler Warning 2:55 Synopsis 3:58 - Discussion 42:57 - Final Review 49:00 - Is it essential? 55:47 - Socials, Suggestions, Sign Off ************************************************** Rate and subscribe!

Kicking off 2022 the crew sits down with our first themed month of Scream rip offs.  Kicking that trend off we start with Urban Legend, a movie that is largely a product of its time which feels VERY late 90's MTV.  Does Urban Legend ever live up to its inspiration?  Would you be on Goth4Goths.com in the late 90's like Bobby would be?  Most importantly though, is it essential? ************************************************** TIMECODES 0:00 - Intro 1:33 - Spoiler Warning 2:17 - Discussion 30:41 - Final Review 35:03 - Is it essential? 40:16 - Socials, Suggestions, Sign Off ************************************************** Rate and subscribe!
