The Everyday Sublime podcast explores a full spectrum spirituality. Each week begins with a dharma talk, and each month Josh has an in-depth conversation with a thought leader in the field. As Stephen Batchelor says, "the mystical does not transcend the world, but saturates it." www.joshsummers.net

Don Goewey | The Dharma of Anthony De Mello

In this episode, I had the great pleasure of speaking with Don Goewey (Executive Director of the De Mello Spirituality Center). We discuss DeMello’s significance as a spiritual figure of the 20th century, and how he offers a unique view of eastern and western spirituality. Don and I reflect on DeMello’s dharma, the experience of seeing one’s shadow, and the rude awakenings that occur when everything falls apart.

Yin Pranayama | Gathering the Qi (Guided Session)

Yin Pranayama | Gathering the Qi (Guided Session)

In this short practice from our all NEW Yin Yoga and Qi Cultivation Training, Josh introduces the foundational dynamic of Yin Pranayama which optimizes the biochemistry of the blood for better distribution of oxygen to the cells, tissues and organs, gathers the Qi in the lower Dan Tian or Hara, and supports the healthy functioning of the Yin organs (Kidney, Liver, Spleen, Lungs and Heart).

If you enjoy this practice, you may also be interested in the acupuncture-based massage protocols that are an integral part of the Yin Yoga and Qi Cultivation Training. As an acupuncturist of twenty years, I’m really excited to share these practices that support balancing and mitigating the conditions of exhaustion, inflammation, stress and anxiety.

Our Inherited Blessings | Dharma Story

As part of a Mother’s Day reflection, I recount the harrowing story of getting robbed in the middle of the night on a train in India, and how a “spiritual” mother appeared to both save me and subsequently change the course of my life. I conclude with a meditative prompt for honoring and appreciating our spiritual ancestors.

In this talk, Josh reflects on this wonderful story and its implications for meditation practice.

Kisagotami and the Mustard Seed

In this talk, I reflect on the heart-rending story of a mother who lost her young son, experienced inconsolable grief, and what happened when she met the Buddha. Kisagotami’s story is nearly identical to my teacher’s teacher’s story, that teacher being the great Buddhist master, Dipa Ma.

May the grief of loss crack open our hearts into immeasurable compassion.

Robert Wright | On My Cognitive Empathy Struggles

Robert Wright | On My Cognitive Empathy Struggles

In this episode, I republish a conversation I had with Robert Wright on his Nonzero Podcast. Bob and I discuss my struggles with cognitive empathy in everyday life. Not my struggle with the concept, mind you. I know that the ability to imagine another person’s perspective is enormously important in communication and relationships.

We explore my struggles with practicing cognitive empathy – especially when I’m under a lot of stress and/or seeing things through distorted lenses. I talk about how easily distorted perception feeds into cycles of conflict and misunderstanding, even with the ones we love the most.

Bob is now working on a new book loosely tilted, The Radical Power of Cognitive Empathy, and I encourage all globally-minded Yin practitioners to check out his Nonzero Newsletter on Substack.

What is Reflective Meditation? Nelly begins an answer by saying, “A big difference is that we really mean it when we say you're free to do whatever happens when you meditate; which means let your thoughts in, let your emotions in. if something just feels really awful that's going on internally, you're free to get up, you're free to take a walk; you really have freedom to let it go where it goes. And also to contain it as you need, which is really, as is becoming more known, trauma-informed.” - Nelly Kaufer

Elisa Malinverni | Yoga for Recovering Addicts

In this episode, I talk with the Swiss yoga teacher Elisa Malinverni about her wonderful new book, Yoga for Recovering Addicts, Stories of Hope and Ways of Self-Healing. Elisa’s clear and nuanced writing explores an integral path to recovery for all manner of addiction.

“In my book, we’re all addicts. The only difference is, some of us have addictions that society labels as strengths and advantages, such as workaholism, fitness-addiction or orthorexia. Some of us weren’t as lucky and ended up with a coping mechanism that society demonizes. The stigma only causes more pain that begs to be alleviated.” – Elisa Malinverni (Yoga for Recovering Addicts)

New Year, Old Self | Dharma Talk with Josh

In the first dharma talk of 2023, Josh offers a meditative reflection on the relationship between reflective listening and the development of skillful intentions in practice. He offers some key meditative prompts that explore the initial stages of tuning into the conditions of your life that may deserve some focused intention.

On January 14th, you’re invited to a special 3hr Winter’s Yin Practice with Josh and Terry that harnesses the energy of Winter to listen deeply to the intentions emerging within the reflection of Qi Gong, Yin Yoga and Yin Meditation. If you can’t attend live, all participants will receive lifetime access to the recording of the practice.

Back Seat Meditation | Dharma Talk with Josh

Every meditator will confront their ego’s attempt to meditate from the back seat. The ego will try to control, influence and manipulate the entire process. In this talk, Josh suggests how to work with this energy.

From Captive to Captivated | Dharma Talk with Josh

In this talk, Josh reflects further on Zhuang Zi’s Butterfly Dream and how the parable offers clues and questions for deepening an understanding of self and consciousness.

"Within the dream state, unless we’re lucid, we tend to be held captive by the content of the dream. But in waking up, we open to the possibility of being captivated by experience." - Josh Summers
