Episode 5: The Magic of Portraiture

Episode 5: The Magic of Portraiture

In this episode we interview Basil Baylin, a 96 year old portrait painter from New York City. Sitting in his uptown apartment studio with cheese sandwiches, we delve into the four basic principles of painting. He discusses how accuracy and color are integral ingredients when making the human face in order to trap the personality of an individual. For Basil portrait painting seems to be a balancing act between practiced accuracy and fluid intuition. Having been drafted in the Korean War, Basil's life is filled with strange and wonderful adventures- of which only a few managed to make an appearance on this podcast. Images of his work and a link to his website can be found on the Farbeyond blog. https://www.hopechristoffersonart.com/blog Basil's Website: https://www.basilbaylin.com The music featured in this episode is "The Way You Look Tonight" recorded by Basil's old friend Tony Bennet, with whom he spent many evenings painting and running around the magical streets of New York City.
