Lectionary Q for January 29, 2023

Lectionary Q for January 29, 2023

Lectionary Q is a resource for clergy and the laity to get ready for the upcoming Sunday using a text from the Revised Common Lectionary.  This week's texts are from Matthew 2:1-12 and Micah 6:1-8.

What are your answers? What are your questions? Send them to lectionaryq@substack.com.

Here are the questions for this week’s passage:

This passage is usually called the Beatitudes.  This work comes from Greek which can mean blessed or happy.  Is there a difference between being blessed and being happy? How would you describe the people Jesus called blessed? What do the beatitudes say about following Jesus?  Is following risky or easy? What do the Beatitudes have to say about the state of the world?

Let’s ask some questions from Micah:

The first part of the passage has the prophet speaking for God.  How would you describe God’s feelings? Why was God not interested in the response from people? In verse 8 it says, “He has told you, O mortal, what is good,” which seems to be the biblical way of saying “You already know what I want.”  Do you think the people really knew what God wanted? Verse 8 uses the word, “require.”  Does require something from us or does God desire something from us?`

Won't You Be A Neighbor?

Luke 10:25-37 | Fifth Sunday After Pentecost | July 10, 2022 | Dennis Sanders, preaching

The lawyer comes and asks Jesus what he has to do to inherit eternal life.   Jesus asks him what scripture says and Jesus responds he answered correctly.  But then the teacher gets sneaky.  He knows he is to love his neighbor as himself, but then he wants to know; who is the neighbor.  Or to be more precise, who doesn’t he have to be a neighbor to? Who can he ignore? One version of scripture says he is looking for a loophole and that’s exactly what he is doing.

A Thankful Life

A Thankful Life

Have you ever heard of the phrase "get right with God?" It seems to connote that we have to do something in order to get back into God's good graces.  But in the texts for this coming weekend from Jeremiah and Hebrews talks about God being the one that acts in order to get people right with God.  The response is not to do something for God to like us but to respond to God's love with discipleship.

Thoughts and Prayers

Second Sunday in Lent: "Thoughts and Prayers." That can be a phrase of caring, but it can also be just mere words.  Jesus calls the disciples and the larger crowd to put words into action.  In Mark chapter 8 and Revelation 3 we learn that in God's Kingdom, words must be backed with acts of love.

What Freedom Really Is

What Freedom Really Is

We hear a lot about freedom in our culture.  The freedom of speech, the freedom to express ourselves, the freedom to choose.  But what does that mean if we are Christians?  What does freedom look like in the body of Christ?  Pastor  Rob will be looking at this question today from 1 Corinthians chapter 8.

“I Can’t Drive 55” | Matthew 22:33-46 | Twenty-First Sunday After Pentecost | The Church Has Left the Building Series | October 25, 2020 | Dennis Sanders, preaching

The religious leaders ask Jesus one final question. What is the greatest commandment?  Jesus gives the answer: love God, and love neighbor.  The religious leaders saw the law as rules people had to follow, but Jesus showed another to look at the law: as entering into a relationship with  God and neighbor.  This Sunday, we will hear from Matthew 22:34-46, continuing our fall worship series, "The Church Has Left the Building."

Divided Loyalties | Matthew 22:15-22 | Twentieth Sunday After Pentecost |The Church Has Left the Building Series | October 18, 2020

Today's Service: Jesus is faced with a question: is it lawful to pay taxes to Ceasar?  Jesus had a quick answer, but do we? What does it mean to be a Christian and a citizen of a nation?  This Sunday, we will hear  from Matthew 22:15-22, continuing our fall worship series, "The Church Has Left the Building."

“Unmasked” | Matthew 21:33-46 | Eighteenth Sunday After Pentecost | The Church Has Left the Building Series | October 4, 2020 | Dennis Sanders, preaching

Today's Service: The Parable of the Tenants in Matthew 21 is an odd tale: the tenants of a vineyard refuse to pay the owner even to the point of killing his only son.  God has entrusted the care of the world to us. How are we using the time we have: to look after our sisters and brothers or to look out for ourselves?

We read in Matthew 21 about a parable Jesus tells about two sons and which was one faithful.

Who among us wouldn't like to be treated like a VIP?  However, in God's kingdom, status or what we do doesn't matter as much as what God does for us.  What does this mean when it comes to our sermon series "The Church Has Left the Building?" How does it prompt us to "Love God, Love Church and Love Neighbor?"

The woman at the center of this story believed Jesus could heal her daughter. It was a risky faith, like doing a trust fall ten feet up and blindfolded.  We place our trust in God even when the future seems bleak.
