Sharing My Disordered Eating Story | National Eating Disorders Awareness Week | Feed That Nation
I'm sharing my disordered eating story and recovery journey this week on Feed That Nation. This episode has been long in the making! It's taken me a long time to put words to my experience. So few people in my life know this story, but I'm not ashamed anymore.
TRIGGER WARNINGS: Non-graphic descriptions of diet culture, body shaming, restrictive and obsessive eating behaviors, MyFitnessPal, weight loss, purging, and mental health/depression/anxiety. If you will be triggered by listening to my story, I want you to honor yourself and STOP watching this video!
If you or someone you know are in immediate danger, please call 911 or contact your local emergency mental health services.
I acknowledge that through all of my past and present struggles, I have always the privilege of a petite, white, healthy body and that fatphobia has never been something others have used to discriminate against me or invalidate me. People in fat bodies, people in non-white bodies, and people in disabled or chronically ill bodies often cannot say the same, and their stories are just as worthy of being heard and respected and empathized with as my own.

How To Stay Active In College: Winter COVID Edition || Feed That Nation
"Work out 3 times a week" seems like a great idea...until it's winter and you live in Minnesota! This week, I'm talking about how to stay active in college...in the winter...during COVID...
And let me say: it is not easy! Staying active is a big challenge when it's too cold to go outside, and physical activity can be a critical self-care tool and mental health booster. Right now, it's all about having patience with ourselves.
My favorite staying active ideas:
Take a lap around the house (hallway, dorm) every hour.
Take the stairs (I know, I know, an obvious one)
Put on music and DANCE!

An obvious trigger warning, but I will be discussing bullying today. Also I will curse a little bit, because sometimes it is warranted.

THE TRUTH ABOUT MY COLLEGE STUDY ABROAD EXPERIENCE || Feed That Nation
I'm talking about my college study abroad experience today! I traveled to South Africa and Namibia and it was the experience of a lifetime...but I'm learning to tell the truth: I really struggled with anxiety while I was abroad and most of the time I was there, I was truly miserable and wanting to come home!
That's been hard for me to admit, because it feels like every other student I've met who has studied abroad has LOVED every second of their experience, and I didn't love mine the same way. But I'm learning that my experience, the positive and the negative, is MY experience and I have nothing to be ashamed of!
The South Africa/Namibia blog series is hidden and I haven't found it yet! Will include the link once I do.

Healthcare Student IMPOSTER SYNDROME and Trusting Yourself || Feed That Nation
I've felt it, you've felt it, we've all felt it at one point or another: Imposter Syndrome! As a healthcare student, there is so much placed on our shoulders and so many expectations that it's easy to forget that we are students and that we are allowed to make mistakes as we learn and grow. And my interesting grad school admission experience aside (video below), we didn't get to be where we are today by accident--we are capable and smart and full of potential! We are where we are ON PURPOSE!

5 THINGS COLLEGE PROFESSORS DO THAT NEED TO STOP || Feed That Nation
In today's podcast, I'm calling out 5 things professors do that need to stop!
Not to say I'm a professional student, but I've been in school a while. The way a professor teaches a class and the way they communicate with their students can definitely MAKE or BREAK a semester. I'm talking about 5 things professors do that definitely do NOT help students have a good learning experience, as well as discussing a little bit about behind the scenes academia and my desire to eventually become a college professor.
My views and opinions are my own and do not reflect those of my current or past educational institutions.
While I talk about a lot of smaller teaching quirks, there is a bigger issue that I do not address in this video: when professors abuse their power to manipulate or harass students, or when professors create or support unsafe or hostile classroom or research environments. This is obviously something that should never happen, but sometimes does. If you have a professor who is behaving inappropriately, treating you or other students poorly, or otherwise creating a hostile and uncomfortable learning environment, you have every right to SPEAK UP! There are many avenues that you can follow to share your thoughts and give feedback, or report misconduct anonymously without fear of retribution.

WHAT RETAIL CAN TEACH YOU: COLLEGE STUDENT RESUME TIPS || Feed That Nation
What retail can teach you, and how to showcase your retail job experience on your resume!
Reality check: A lot of college students work jobs in retail. These jobs can be convenient, reliable, and they provide needed income! No shame! However, many jobs and grad programs are looking for unpaid internship hours and volunteering, which not every student can afford to prioritize.
In this episode of Feed That Nation, I'm talking about how to showcase your retail experience as a college student, especially when your retail job has NOTHING to do with your intended career, because retail job experience is VALUABLE! Here's how to show your future employers just how much of a rock star you are!

STRUGGLING WITH ONLINE CLASSES AS A GRAD STUDENT: QUARANTINE TRANSITION || Feed That Nation
Today, I'm talking all about the struggles of being an online graduate student during COVID-19. Was I an online student before a few months ago? No! Has it been crazy, strange, and kinda...sucky? Yes!
My masters of public health and dietetic internship have been moved online until further notice. I'm uncomfortable and unsure, and wanting to share about my experience with you, as well as a bit of advice that I'm hoping will help you right now. You, my fellow healthcare classmates, whether you are in my cohort or halfway around the world, are not alone! We are all working through this together!
NOTE: Since the date I recorded this video, several logistics regarding my coursework, internships, etc., have been changed. The plan is still to complete all coursework and required hours and my cohort is still on-track to graduate on time.

NUTRITION TOXICITY AND INFORMATION OVERLOAD || Feed That Nation
Is there a such thing as nutrition overload? Can studying nutrition be toxic for you? Yes, it can! I'm happy to take the time to unpack my thoughts today: I LOVE nutrition, but I've had to learn to compartmentalize and find the balance of learning to enjoy my field of study and pursue my passions...while also taking time away from learning to enjoy other aspects of my life.
This episode briefly discusses body image/eating disorders/disordered eating. If this will make you uncomfortable, go ahead and watch one of my other videos instead!

ARE YOU OVERPAYING AT TARGET?? I Went To Every Target in Minneapolis || Feed That Nation
I went to 5 different Target stores in Minneapolis with the same grocery list, and every store's items had different prices! In this episode of Feed That Nation, I discuss my Target adventures and show you the real cost of my grocery list at each of the 5 stores. I also talk about reasons WHY Target might charge $4 for a bag of apples at one store and $5.60 for the same bag of apples at another store (no, really!), and share my thoughts on food security, equity, and fiscal practices.
I visited these Target stores on February 8, 2020, several weeks before social distancing and shelter-at-home orders were placed on Minnesota residents.

MY FAVORITE COOKBOOKS AS A COLLEGE STUDENT || Feed That Nation
This is the first episode that I've published with real live video for YouTube! So if the audio is a little funky--I'm still working on my editing skills (:
I'm talking cookbooks! Call me old-school, but I love cookbooks! It makes trying to decide what to make so much easier, everything is organized and clearly written out, and there's just something so satisfying about cooking with a book propped up in front of you, a couple of smudges or bits of flour on the pages. Catch me talking what makes a good cookbook, and a few of my favorite cookbooks and what I like about them.
Cookbooks I mention:
Indian-ish, by Priya Krishna
Run Fast, Eat Slow, by Shalane Flanagan and Elyse Kopecky
Salt Fat Acid Heat, by Samin Nosrat
The $5 a Meal College Vegetarian Cookbook, by Nicole Cormier
The Better Homes Cookbook
The Forest Feast Gatherings, by Erin Gleeson

The Nutrition Starting Line and Making Change
When people find out that I study nutrition, I get hit up for advice everywhere from the dentist office to the dance floor. And that's awesome! I love having conversations with curious people. The most common question I get asked is usually along the lines of "I want to be healthy. Where do I start?"
In this episode, I talk about what I've learned about getting started with making positive lifestyle change, discuss the steps to success, and talk about what people REALLY want to know when they're asking "What should I eat?"

Dinner for Two...Hundred: What I Did This Summer
A vlog-style podcast about my summer job: Food Operations Lead and Nutrition Specialist with the Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps. (Can it be a vlog if there's no video???). The six weeks I spent traveling, working, laughing, and crying with the same 200 people truly changed my life for the better, and I'm so happy to be able to reflect on it as I return to real life.

Story-time: Defining Disappointment and Self-Worth
Putting this personal experience of mine into a podcast is one of the most vulnerable things that I've ever done. I didn't tell hardly anyone in my life about being nominated for commencement speaker because I was afraid of the shame of having to admit that I was not chosen. But knowing now that my self-worth is NOT defined by this or any other experiences in my life is powerful! The struggle to prove that you are "good enough" is a struggle I see in so many of my friends and peers, and I want to break the cycle! I recorded this episode back in May, and I'm almost laughing at how much change I hear in myself now compared to myself only a month ago!

Managing Chronic Illness as a Young Adult, Part 2
Part two of our episode all about managing chronic illness as a young adult. Shauna, Analisa, Rose, and I continued our discussion about chronic illness. Featuring discussion (and lots of laughs) as we talk about what it's like to tell people we have a chronic illness, not wanting to be the "spokesperson" for our disease, well-meaning but ignorant strangers giving advice, navigating family, holidays, significant others, commiserating about our shared "near-death" experiences (we're so dramatic!), and our advice for other young adults facing our illnesses: seek out support when you need it, claim EVERY aspect of who you are, and don't forget to laugh at yourself once in a while.
Featured chronic conditions: Type I Diabetes, Meniere's Disease, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). If you are wanting more information about these conditions or any others, we encourage you to do research! Google will turn up a lot of reliable sources (think .org, .gov, and .edu!).

Part one features an introduction to each of our chronic conditions and diagnosis stories, use of diet to manage symptoms, comparing "good" and "bad" days, how chronic conditions can affect mental and social health, feelings of guilt, shame, and self-blame, advocating for yourself, and wanting to feel normal. Feed That Nation: Behind-the-Scenes of Season One
I made a podcast! Let's talk about it!
Deciding to create a podcast for my senior honors project wasn't the easiest thing I've ever done, but it's been one of the most exciting and challenging experiences of my college career! I've gained so much confidence in my public speaking skills, along with a lot of technical knowledge about audio production and editing. There have been so many learning opportunities (mistakes!!) that have made me a better interviewer and producer along the way.
Season Two is in production and I am so excited to continue learn more about the world around me. Podcasting allows me to have amazing conversations and learn so many new things!
Please leave me a review and a 5-star rating on iTunes, if that's where you listen. When the tracking software knows that people are listening and like my podcast, they are more likely to recommend it to new listeners!
Stay tuned! The first episode of Season Two will premiere on June 3rd!
