Bryan Denison (aka Cajun Cardboard) Returns and Talks Basketball Cards Including Bad News for Wemby Going to Spurs; Pick 1 Listener Submission Asks Which BGS Min Gem Subgrade Worst To Have 9

EPISODE 134 - Clark and Hyung open the show talking about whether it matters where generational players Victor Wembanyama and Connor Bedard ultimately play for their respective rookie card values.

Then the guys welcome back Bryan Denison (aka Cajun Cardboard on YouTube) to the podcast who brings his wealth of basketball and basketball card knowledge. They discuss everything from Victor Wembanyama most likely going to the Spurs (thumbs down) and whether Luka Doncic is overrated in the hobby to the idea that NBA centres/big men aren't worth investing in and if LeBron James cards are a good buy right now.

Then Clark and Hyung finish the episode off with the regular "Pick One" segment where each host names two cards or sets, and then debate which one they would rather invest in. Clark starts with a listener submission (Kenny Tomek) for Pick 1 who asks which subgrade in a BGS min gem card would you hate to have the 9 in (edges/centering/corners/surface)? Hyung's Pick 1 is a choice between Connor Bedard or Victor Wembanyama as a sports card investment.

Examining Drop in Card Prices Over Past Year and Identifying Potential Buying Opportunites; Victor Wembanyama First Autograph Card Worth The Hype?; Playing the Hobby Quiz Show

EPISODE 133 - Clark, Hyung, and John start the show discussing the recent news that Victor Wembanyama will have his first autograph card in the Bowman University Inception set (as well as NCAA Women's tourney standout Caitlin Clark). The question is, "Will this 'Wemby' card carry significant value being the first autograph card or will the hype down down as more of his autos (in pro-uniform) come onto the market?

Then the guys get into Hobby Headlines by looking at the CardLadder index across the four major North American sports and seeing which sport has lost the most market value (year over year) and which sport might there be good buying opportunities to buy sports cards at the dip.

Clark then introduces another new segment called "Quiz Show," where Clark asks Hyung and John hobby trivia questions to test their hobby knowledge. Some questions include "When was the first superfractor produced?" and "Which three #1 MLB draft picks had one of their cards sell for at least six figures.

Then they finish the episode off with the regular "Pick One" segment where each host names two cards or sets, and then debate which one they would rather invest in. The pairs chosen this week include one listener submission (Shohei Ohtani/Mike Trout Dual Autograph Bowman's Best card vs. Mickey Mantle PSA 2 vintage baseball card; Leon Draisaitl vs. Auston Matthews; Julio Rodriguez Bowman Prospect Autograph Atomic Refractor /100 card vs. Julio Rodriguez Bowman Prospect Autograph Blue Refractor (color match.)

Addressing The Controversial Card Trimming Video; Looking At Wander Franco and Fernando Tatis Jr. Card Values; Are Recent Sales of Modern Cards Worth The Investment Risk?

EPISODE 131 - Clark, Hyung, and John are back together again and to start the show they catch up on a couple of baseball players, their card values, and whether it's a good time to buy right now. The players in question are Wander Franco and Fernando Tatis Jr.

The guys then get into Hobby Headlines and they weigh in on the controversial card trimming video by former NFL player Evan Mathis. They debate whether card trimming (especially for vintage sports cards) are now okay or if the video could be encouraging some collectors to trim their cards to get a higher grade without disclosing the alterations.

Afterwards, Clark introduces a new segment called "Worth The Risk?" in which he presents some sales of modern cards, and asks Hyung and John whether it's worth the risk to invest in those cards at the recent sale prices.

Then they finish the episode off with the regular "Pick One" segment where each host names two cards or sets, and then debate which one they would rather invest in. The pairs chosen this week include: Mookie Betts 2014 Bowman Chrome Rookie Autograph Gold Refractor vs. Shohei Ohtani 2018 Bowman Chrome Rookie Autograph Atomic Refractor; Luka Doncic Silver Prizm Rookie Card vs. Devin Booker Silver Prizm Rookie Card; and Jarred Kelenic Bowman Chrome Rookie Autograph vs. Jeremy Pena Bowman Chrome Rookie Autograph Card.

Interview With Darrell "DC" Chan (@dcm5v on IG) On His Best Flips and Trades as a Dealer Plus The Fun in Collecting Baseball Prospects; Quick Review of 2023 Bowman Baseball

EPISODE 130 - Clark and Hyung start the show discussing the release of 2023 Bowman Baseball and what prospects are the big chase this season (and whether it's worth the current values they're listed for already on eBay).

The guys then welcome Darrell "DC" Chan (aka @dcm5v on Instagram) to the show who set up as a dealer at the recent Sports Card Expo and shared his strategy on buying, selling and trading at card shows. He also talked about his incredible timing coming back into the hobby over the years when he was able to acquire some major cards, boxes and cases early on, and then subsequently capitalize on it during the hobby hype.

Darrell finally also had the opportunity to give his side of the story in the infamous trade with Clark where he traded away his Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Bowman Chrome 1st autograph card for a Shohei Ohtani Topps Chrome rookie autograph card (which he sold at the Sports Card Expo for a cool $6K.)

Clark and Hyung finishes the show off with the regular "Pick One" segment where each host names two cards or sets, and then debate which one they would rather invest in. The pairs chosen this week include: Pete Alonso Bowman Chrome 1st Autograph Rookie Card vs. Yordan Alvarez Bowman Chrome 1st Autograph Rookie Card; Druw Jones Bowman Chrome 1st Autograph Refractor /499 (RAW) vs. Corbin Carroll Bowman Chrome 1st Autograph Base (PSA 10).

Interview With Brent Weyer (aka deepvalueinvestor1 on IG) On Investing in High-End Sports Cards and Creating Boundaries on What to Buy; Hyung Makes Some Big Trades At Recent Sports Card Expo

EPISODE 129 - Clark and Hyung start the show by sharing their recent experience at the Sports Card Expo in Toronto (the largest in Canada) including a couple of big pick-ups and trades by Hyung and whether he was successful in getting rid of some of many slabs.

Then for this Friday episode, Clark had a great interview with Brent Weyer (aka @deepvalueinvestor1 on Instagram) about his strategy when it comes to investing in high-end sports cards. They include buying both the right card of the right player, choosing the better parallel over the better grade, creating boundaries using data on what cards to target, and determining what makes a sports card a top 100 all-time card.

Interview With Denny (aka denny_cards on IG) About Providing Funny, Insightful Hobby Content plus How Fanatics Can Instantly Make Hobby Better; Too Much Hype on Monopoly Prizm Basketball Cards?

EPISODE 128 - Clark and Hyung start the episode talking about the recently released Monopoly Prizm NBA Basketball Cards and discuss whether it's worth the hype (with some rare parallels going for thousands of dollars).

Then the guys welcome Denny (aka denny_cards on Instagram) to the show who has been very active in producing funny and insightful hobby content. Although he only returned to the hobby this past September, Denny has shared many of his learnings on IG and on other podcasts, including listing auctions on eBay and letting the market decide the value of his cards as well as his experience selling on other platforms (ie. auction houses and at live shows).

Not surprisingly, Denny has started to grow his following fairly quickly as he continues to provide value to the hobby community, which should continue to grow with plans to start a podcast of his own.

Clark and Hyung then finish the show off with the regular "Pick One" segment where each host names two cards or sets, and then debate which one they would rather invest in. The pairs chosen this week include: Ronald Acuna 2018 Topps Chrome Sapphire Rookie Card vs. Ronald Acuna 2018 Topps Update White Jersey Rookie Card; Ronald Acuna 2017 Bowman Chrome 1st Autograph Gold Refractor vs. Fernando Tatis Jr. 2016 Bowman Chrome 1st Autograph Gold Refractor.

Tips and Tricks When Trying to Make Sports Card Trades; Marketplaces for Cards Too Fragmented?; Overrated/Underrated Game with Specific Grades (PSA 10, BGS 9.5, SGC 10)

EPISODE 127 - Clark, Hyung, and Will (who filled in for John again this episode) kick off the show, responding to Josh Luber's recent take that there are too many buying and selling platforms currently out there and a consolidation is needed to create true liquidity and true markets in sports cards with the majority of bidders being able to bid in one place (ie. the equivalent of a main stock exchange.) They discuss whether the marketplace for cards being too fragmented is really a bad thing or just another opportunity to find good deals.

Then in Hobby Headlines, the guys talk about the "art of the trade." More specifically, they give tips from past experience on how to make good and successful trades as well as what to expect when trying to make trades, especially at live card shows.

The next segment is Overrated/Underrated with Clark giving both Hyung and Will a specific grade (ie. PSA 10, BGS 9.5 True Gem, SGC 10) and trying to determine whether that grade is overrated or underrated.

Lastly, they finish the show off with the regular "Pick One" segment where each host names two cards or sets, and then debate which one they would rather invest in. The pairs chosen this week include: Zion Williamson Prizm Base Rookie vs. Juan Soto Topps Flagship Rookie; Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Silver Prizm PSA 10 ($550) vs. Luka Doncic Silver Prizm PSA 10 ($1600); Wander Franco Atomic Refractor Bowman Chrome vs. Wander Franco 2022 Topps Chrome Sapphire (PSA 10 for $500) vs Wander Franco 2019 Bowman Chrome Atomic 1st (PSA 10).

Revisiting the Beckett Grading Scale Fiasco (and Proposing Better Solutions); Topps Chrome Basketball to Return?; Complaining About the Hobby like 'Grumpy Old Men'

EPISODE 125 - Clark and John welcome back podcast fan favorite, Will, to the show and they get right into it off the top by discussing the recent news that Fanatics is bring back basketball cards under the Topps brand after a more than decade hiatus.

The guys then get into Hobby Headlines talking about whole Beckett grading scale fiasco – more specifically, what they thought about the initial proposed idea (ie. Mint+ grade) before Beckett retracted, and which alternate solutions they like best (including a very convoluted suggestion from Will himself!)

And in a new segment called "Grumpy Old Men," Clark, John, and Will air out some complaints they have about the hobby, which make them sound like grumpy old men as the title of this segment suggests.

Lastly, they finish the show off with the regular "Pick One" segment where each host names two cards or sets, and then debate which one they would rather invest in. The pairs chosen this week include: Get rid of sticker autographs vs. Get rid of non game-used relics; Color match cards vs. Jersey match cards; Mike Trout 2009 Bowman Chrome BGS 9.5 ($8000) vs. Mike Trout 2009 Bowman Chrome PSA 9 ($7000).

Reliving the Junk Wax Era with Guest Host Chris Begg; How Mariano Rivera Learned His Deadly Cutter; Playing Overrated/Underrated on Iconic '80s and '90s Sports Cards

EPISODE 124 - Clark and Hyung welcome back Chris Begg, former pitcher for Team Canada in the Summer Olympics and the World Baseball Classic, to co-host this episode where they first discuss the cool video of Michael Rubin, Fanatics CEO, surprising a young female Devin Booker fan and card collector at a local card shop recently.

Then the guys dive into Hobby Headlines talking about the junk wax era, naming their favorite players they collected and going over who deserves more hobby love despite the supremely high print runs.

Continuing with the junk wax era theme, they play Overrated/Underrated next with Clark listing popular sports cards in that era. The list includes the Ken Griffey Jr. Upper Deck rookie, Don Mattingly Donruss rookie, and Barry Bonds Topps Traded Tiffany to name a few. Chris also shares a cool story about how Mariano Rivera learned to throw his deadly cutter.

Lastly, they finish the show off with the regular "Pick One" segment where each host names two cards or sets, and then debate which one they would rather invest in. The pairs chosen this week include: Anthony Volpe vs. Jasson Dominguez; 1987 Leaf Baseball vs 1987 O-Pee-Chee Baseball Sealed Wax; Barry Bonds 1986 Topps Traded Tiffany BGS 9.5 (pop: 513; $2000) vs. Mark McGwire 1985 Topps (USA Baseball Team) PSA 10 (pop: 306; $1900).

Discussing Retail King Fiasco and Whether Breaker Scams Are Prevalent in the Hobby; Topps Tennis Cards Coming and Future of Niche Sports Cards?; Playing Buy/Sell/Hold On Injured Players

EPISODE 122 - Clark, Hyung, and John open the show with a brief discussion on the Retail King breaker fiasco and if they think scams in the breaking world are more prevalent these days or whether there are just a few relatively speaking all being highlighted on social media at the moment.

Then the guys get into Hobby Headlines to talk about Fanatics signing a 20 year deal with Winners Alliance – a for-profit affiliate of the Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA) – to produce tennis cards for the next two decades under the Topps brand. And more broadly, including tennis, they discuss whether niche sports can have sizeable collector base in the hobby and see sustainable growth (ie. lacrosse, cricket, rugby?)

Next, they play another round of Buy/Sell/Hold with Clark giving a list of five currently injured players who are expected to be out months, and then each deciding whether they would buy, sell, or hold their cards. The list of players includes Jose Altuve, Bryce Harper, Walker Buehler, Chet Holmgren, and Cole Caufield.

Lastly, they finish the show off with the regular "Pick One" segment where each host names two cards or sets, and then debate which one they would rather invest in. The pairs chosen this week include: Juan Soto 2018 Topps Update US300 Rainbow Foil vs. Juan Soto 2018 Topps Chrome Update Pink Refractor; Shohei Ohtani 2018 Topps Chrome Blue Refractor vs. Shohei Ohtani 2018 Topps Chrome Sapphire; Mike Trout 2011 Topps Update Hope Diamond Anniversary /60 (PSA 6) vs. Mike Trout 2011 Topps Update Gold (PSA 10).

EPISODE 121 - Clark and Hyung start the show talking about Philadelphia Phillies reliever Matt Strahm's unique baseball card collection. They also discuss how cool and interesting it is to hear more athletes, past and present, getting into card collecting and what they have in their personal collections and the stories behind them.

Then Clark interviews Matt Novogratz, Candy Digital Co-Founder, about the future of digital collectibles and NFT sports cards as well as what Candy has coming to coincide with the start of another new MLB season (Showstopper ICONs!). During the interview, they also go deeper into how collecting digitally can lead to more unique and cool experiences for the collector including being rewarded for completing an online collecting challenge or opening a digital card that has special utility behind it (ie. meet and greet player on the card). They also discuss which demographic is helping grow the Candy customer base (ie. old school collectors dabbling in opening NFT packs vs. purely digital asset collectors or a combination of both).

Then to round off the show, Clark and Hyung play another round of Overrated/Underrated with the theme being "non-rookie cards." Some of the cards they debated include modern autograph cards of retired players, superfractors of non-rookie cards, and second-year vintage sports cards.

Lastly, they finish the show off with the regular "Pick One" segment where each host names two cards or sets, and then debate which one they would rather invest in. EPISODE 119 - Clark and John welcome back Hyung to the show after a two-week hiatus and off the top, they get Hyung's thoughts on some of the recent news and announcements that came out of the Topps Industry Conference including the upcoming release of the "frozenfractor" card, Topps removing several product lines, and Tom Brady baseball autograph cards. Hyung also guesses what the so-called biggest product announcement could be that Fanatics promises to deliver.

Then they get into Hobby Headlines where they discuss Tik Tok's ban on breakers livestreaming on its platform and whether other social media platforms could follow suit. They also talk about whether more regulation is needed in the breaking space as well as offer advice on how to improve the whole breaking experience so hobbyists old and new can both enjoy it responsibly.

The guys then play Buy/Sell/Hold on sports cards featuring players that have been in the news recently (including Ja Morant, Zion Williamson, Kevin Durant, and Derek Carr) and whether that news has changed any of their minds when it comes to buying, selling, or holding their respective cards.

Lastly, they finish the show off with the regular "Pick One" segment where each host names two cards or sets, and then debate which one they would rather invest in. Helping Jud Fabian's Dad Find His Son's Special Inscribed Cards; Debating Whether Inscription Sports Cards are Cool and Worth the Premium

EPISODE 117 - Clark, John, and Will (who is filling in for Hyung once again) talk about a recent article on espn.com about Jud Fabian, a Baltimore Oriole prospect, who signed his first Bowman Chrome autograph card with the inscription, "Hi Dad!" And now his father Eric Fabian is trying to track it down. Check out the IG reel on fivecardguys to see what the card looks like.

Then the guys talk about inscription cards in general including whether it's worth the premium over normal autograph cards or if it ruins the aesthetic of the overall card. And they finish off the Friday episode by giving their opinions on some popular examples of inscribed cards such as a Mike Trout "2x MVP" card, a few unique Benny Montgomery inscribed cards including one in which he signed Jordan Lawler's name (in some kind of trade with him), and a few crazy inscriptions by Lavar Ball (father of Lonzo and LaMelo Ball).

Alternative Ways and Places to Find More Potential Sports Card Deals Other Than eBay; Invest in Cards of Pitchers, Catchers, Goalies; Wide Receivers?; Picking One Underdog QB to Flip Short-term

Alternative Ways and Places to Find More Potential Sports Card Deals Other Than eBay; Invest in Cards of Pitchers, Catchers, Goalies; Wide Receivers?; Picking One Underdog QB to Flip Short-term

EPISODE 109 - Clark, Hyung, and John make their Super Bowl picks off the top of the show (this episode was recorded when there were eight teams left in the playoffs). They also picked which quarterback they would risk investing in for a short-term flip from the four underdog teams: Joe Burrow (Bengals), Daniel Jones  (Giants),  Dak Prescott (Cowboys), and Trevor Lawrence (Jaguars).

Then for Hobby Headlines, the guys talk about alternative ways to find good sports card deals other than sniping them off eBay. Suggestions include Goldin's new weekly auctions as well as its marketplace; Blowout Forums; Facebook Groups; and trading at local card shows.

Then it was time for another round of Overrated/Underrated with the theme this time being "positional players." For example, are baseball cards of pitchers or catchers, overrated or underrated? How about hockey cards of goalies or football cards of any player other than a QB?

They finish the show off with the regular "Pick One" segment where each host names two cards or sets, and then debate which one they would rather invest in. The pairs chosen this week include: Jackson Chourio 2022 Bowman Chrome rookie refractor autograph card vs. Jasson Dominguez 2020 Bowman Chrome rookie refractor autograph card; Greater feeling: pulling a monster hit vs. sniping a grail card for a steal price; Cade Cunningham 2021 Blue Prizm /199 rookie card (PSA 10) vs. Ken Griffey Jr. 1989 Upper Deck rookie card (PSA 10).

EPISODE 106 - Clark, Hyung, and John kick off the show by talking about the potential investment opportunity (or lack thereof?) in the Victor Wembanyama's Sports Illustrated for Kids card found in the January/February edition of this year. Is it worth picking one up or is it just a gimmick?

The guys then welcome back their hobby friend William Chong, owner of Dolly's Toys and Games, back to the show to talk about how the trading card business has been for them in 2022 as well as what he expects for the hobby in 2023. They also ask William his thoughts on the conspiracy theory that some high-end products with the big hits are marked and then shipped to popular breakers. Is the Future of Digital Collectables and NFT Trading Cards Dead with Fanatics Divesting 60% of its Stake in Candy Digital?; Shyne150's Reacquires Luka Doncic Logoman for $3.1M

EPISODE 105 - Clark, Hyung and John start the first Friday episode of 2023 by talking about @Shyne150's recent "re-acquisition" of the Luka Doncic Logoman Autograph Card for $3.1M – the same card he sold about a year ago for $4.6M (resulting in a profit of $1.5M plus having the card back in his possession).

Then for the Friday hobby discussion, the guys respond to the recent news that Fanatics is divesting 60% of its stake in NFT company Candy Digital. Is this a bad sign for the future of NFT trading cards and digital collectables in general? Or is this just simply growing pains with the new blockchain technology still an inevitability in the hobby?
