Episode 45: The Man Who Loved the Skies - in Memory of Loren Jones
In this special episode of the Flying Midwest Podcast, we pay heartfelt tribute to the remarkable life and legacy of Loren Jones, an exceptional aviator who left an indelible mark on the aviation community. Our last conversation with Loren took place at this year's Airventure, where he graciously shared his unwavering passion for aviation with us during one of our FMP Live from OSH recordings. Not only was Loren a source of inspiration, but he was also a skilled Gyrocopter builder and pilot. In a testament to his expertise, he was awarded a well-deserved 2nd Place Lindy Award in the Gyroplan category.
Loren's legacy extends to the countless lives he touched as an instructor, guiding aspiring aviators with patience, expertise, and a genuine love for aviation.
On October 8th, Loren was involved in a devastating crash of his beloved Gyrocopter in southern Minnesota, resulting in a crash into the Minnesota River. Though rescue workers displayed incredible bravery in retrieving Loren from the river after the accident, he ultimately succumbed to his injuries, leaving an irreplaceable void in the aviation world.
Join us in this emotional episode as we celebrate Loren Jones's lasting impact and reflect on his legacy in the world of aviation. Our thoughts and condolences go out to Loren's family and friends during this challenging time. As we commemorate the life of a true aviation legend, we encourage our listeners to share their own stories, memories, and tributes on our social media channels. Fly high, Loren, and may your inspiration continue to guide and uplift generations of aviators to come.

Remembering Richard McSpadden
With heavy hearts we remember and pay tribute to a truly remarkable individual, Richard McSpadden. The aviation world has been shaken by the sudden loss of this extraordinary man, whose impact on the industry was profound. We reflect on the life and contributions of Richard, a former commander of the USAF Thunderbirds and a vice president at AOPA, where he served as the director of the Air Safety Institute.
On the afternoon of Sunday, October 1st, 2023, Richard was involved in an aircraft crash near Lake Placid, New York. The Cessna 177RG he was in experienced an emergency upon take off and was unable to make it back to the airport. He and another pilot did not survive.
Richard's legacy in the aviation community is nothing short of remarkable. Richard's aircraft incident early analysis videos have left an indelible mark on the aviation community. Through these videos, he shared his knowledge and expertise, providing valuable lessons and fostering a culture of safety within the aviation world. His contributions will continue to guide and inspire pilots for generations to come. Our podcast had the privilege to feature him as a guest. Our paths crossed at Airventure, an event that serves as a focal point for aviation enthusiasts. His warmth and generosity were evident as he graciously spent time chatting with us and even facilitated introductions for future interviews.
In memory of Richard and as a token of our gratitude for his contributions, we are republishing our interview with him from this past summer. We hope that by sharing his insights and experiences once more, we can continue to benefit from the wisdom he imparted to us.
To Richard's family, friends, and the entire AOPA community, our hearts go out to you during this difficult time. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. Richard's presence will be deeply missed, but his legacy will forever soar in the skies of aviation.

Episode 42: Girls in Aviation Day
Come one, come all to experience the joy of aviation! In this week’s episode, we were delighted to speak with a previous guest, Ambyr Peterson, as well as Mina Carlson, about Women in Aviation International’s event called Girls in Aviation Day. The Stars of the North chapter of Minnesota currently hosts the largest GIAD event, and they are proud to announce it will be back this year on September 23, 2023 at Flying Cloud Airport (FCM). Along with discussing how the event operates, we also discuss the history of WAI, the global and local impact of GIAD, and what new things you can expect going to the Stars of the North GIAD this year!
