We hear a lot of talk about student leadership and student agency in the education space. Today, we highlight two students who have been leading the way through the Chief Science Officers program. While esports (and the gaming industry as a whole) might have a reputation for being negative, there are some leaders out there who are pushing hard to change the narrative and build programs that create impact for our students. An increasingly common journey for scholar gamers is to participate in esports in college and/or high school, and then take their knowledge and experience back to the virtual playing field as a coach. Anna Patterson played Overwatch competitively at Florida Southern College and is now leading the next round of players through the game.

Christine Pinto and Jessica Twomey are two kindergarten teachers (and authors) from opposite ends of the country whose classes collaborate on a daily basis. The mindset of Innovating Play was born from the idea that it is possible to protect and nurture best practices in early childhood education, while expanding opportunities for appropriate connection and discovery through technology. Gamification, game-based learning, and competitive gaming are all popular in education right now. When you're one of the leaders that sets the vision for one of the nation's largest school districts, it has to be clear and it has to scale. For Miami-Dade County Public Schools, this means over 400 schools and more than 350,000 students. Marie Izquierdo started as a student in the district and has worked her way up to being the Chief Strategy Officer. Marie and I talked about the vision for education in MDCPS, their recognition by the Council of Great City Schools, and the ingredients in their secret sauce for success.

Instructional coaching has become more and prevalent in school districts around the country as district and school leaders look to reflect on and improve their pedagogical practices, technology integration, and invest in the growth of their staff for the benefit of the students. As we navigate the transition back to "normal" in education, there are things that have shifted that we don't want to see return to the way we've always done them. We need to maintain some of this momentum to push forward and embrace the paradigm shift. In Metro Nashville Public Schools, Dr. Lakisha Brinson is helping lead the way as their Director of Instructional Technology and Library Services. While not all of our students are planning on starting a business, many can benefit from teaching and learning around the skills that are sometimes relegated to an entrepreneurship curriculum: defining and solving a problem, confidence and clarity of communication, and so much more. Large, urban school districts tend to operate like their own city within a city- acting as a hub for learning and knowledge, but also supporting the areas that they serve. Today, I talk with Phillip Dunn, CIO for Broward County Schools in Florida (6th largest district in the country with ~270K students), who has also worked within NYC DOE (largest district in the country).
