It's Called Culture

It's Called Culture

By Folk and Fad

First generation Portuguese-Americans reflect on their heritage in a sarcastic and entertaining collection of discussions that preserve the past of our culture and look to shape the future of it.

Sharing our own stories (and those of our guests and listeners) across the backdrop of the immigrant experience, we unwind ideas of guilt, fear, shame, and social norms influenced by ethnicity, religion, and media. Each new episode also has a segment dedicated to sharing mental health best practices (the elephant in the room of our culture).

Guests and listeners of all cultures encouraged!

We share the experience with you in this episode.

069: Travel Gone Wrong, Tory Burch v. Portugal, Coworkers Are Not Your Friends

First, a segment about what we're watching and reading: Netflix's Longest Third Date, Netflix's The Volcano Rescue from Whakaari, and Malcolm Harris' Palo Alto History of California, Capitalism, and the World. Next, we discuss Tory Burch's overpriced and under-attributed Portuguese-inspired items including a sweater tunic with similarities to Povoa de Varzim's camisola poveira, a lettuce-ware line bearing resemblance to Bordallo Pinheiro's cabbage-ware, and even a logo that appears inspired by The Order of the Christ Cross. We close out with a mental health segment sorting out the nature of relationships with coworkers.

068: AI-Generated Interview Questions with Guest Connie Marques on Portugal Travels

The always-funny Connie Marques shares her recent trip to Portugal, including stops in Lisbon, Coimbra, Curia, Porto, and São Miguel. We hit her with a curious list of interview questions generated by AI which get her to talk about trying the popular dish francesinha, night-seagulls (cagarros), train chaos, funny language encounters, and a surprise transatlantic visit from her dad. We speak with fondness of our shared village roots and desire to be part of that community lifestyle. A truly touching and hilarious episode!

We bring you three entirely separate incidents involving self-proclaimed "Sausage Kings" and murder. A fourth generation Portuguese-American Sausage King in California, a German immigrant Sausage King in Chicago, and a Russian Sausage King near Moscow, Russia. Plot twist, one of them is a victim not a perpetrator. Either way, if you ever see the words “Sausage King” in a profile on Bumble, swipe hard left.
