Sensuality as Self-Care 101 - with Katrina Marie

IT'S TIME!!! A huge shift is happening in my work and life... and in the world. I'm craving - and I think you are too - a new, FUN, hopeful, inspiring approach to a version of health that you actually WANT to care about and show up for.  No more heavy, divisive, do-it-my-way or else approaches to taking care of yourself.  The podcast has shifted from The Food Freedom/Body Love Podcast to 100% Healthy-ish and we're going to blow the health conversation wide open. We're  gonna look at ALL aspects of your life, knowing that what connects you to how you want to feel in your body (and what makes the process FUN) is what's actually going to make you healthy. In this episode: why, even with all of the progress that we have made in terms of ditching diet, culture messaging and external expectations about our bodies, there still seems to be something missing the two biggest issues I see in the current approach to health and wellness why we need to push SO FAR beyond the basics of food and movement (even if the approach is intuitive!) the problem with the word HEALTH and why 100% HEALTHY-ISH is the new destination!! sensuality as a framework for being healthy-ish Be sure to download your copy of the Holiday Healthy-ish Starter Guide NOW: https://www.foodfreedombodylove.com/healthyishstarterguide

Myth #2 of Intuitive Eating: the misconception that IE teaches you to eat everything in front of you or everything that crosses your mind, at all the times, no matter what. Many a woman has gotten stuck at a point in the IE process when this feels like the truth - eating every she sees, unable to stop, feeling messy and uncomfortable and anything but intuitive. “I have a NO problem!!” she’ll shout at me from her Zoom room. “I've lost my NO!!!!” And then the spiral of I can’t do this, this can’t be right, this isn’t healthy, what a crock of sh&t, etc begins. It's impossible to be intentional with your intuitive eating if you don’t feel like you can say no to anything - I think we can agree on that. But how do we fix it? Let's discuss...

the most unnatural, natural, thing I've ever done

the most unnatural, natural, thing I've ever done

Here we are at Part 1 of my Intentional Intuitive Eating series where I'm kicking things off by breaking down the first of three myths about IE. Myths that get in the way of our ability to be both intuitive and intentional. So here we go, the misconception that launched a thousand ships of shame… Myth #1 - Intuitive Eating should be easy, breezy, natural. It should require no thought and is, instead, the result of always just going with the flow and being 'mindful', hippy-dippy style. The reality is that intuitive eating requires a bit of work. Let's discuss... Learn more about The Juicy Body Blueprint HERE.

Intentional Intuitive Eating

How do you feel about intermittent fasting? What about carbs? Is it a diet if I decide to reduce carb intake? These are my favourite kinds questions. The ones that challenge me to explore and explain the complexity and nuance of intuitive eating. I'm currently fleshing out a small ebook on the topic but - if you're interested - I thought it could be fun to dig into the basics right here, in your inbox. This is what I propose: a 4-part series on what it means to be intuitive and intentional. Today I'm introducing the series and filling you in on what's to come! All the potential.

All the potential.

What I want to talk about today is potential - and the things in our lives that have the potential to both build us up and break us. It occurred to me, as I watched my daughters' dance show from the wings last weekend, how peculiar it is that I, as a body image coach and promoter of health at every size, have found myself and my children entrenched in the world of dance. Along with running, figure skating, and cheerleading - dance is one of the most problematic pursuits when it comes to girls, women, and bodies. It has the potential to do so much damage. My experience has been that dance - contemporary dance in particular - has offered my girls and me the opportunity to work through stress and tough emotions and connect to our bodies in a very tangible way. I see a deep and unwavering body confidence in both my daughters and I feel it in myself. The music, the movement, the exposure, and the physical challenge - boosts our mood and is often “the” game changer on tough days in our home. It has the potential to do so much damage but in the right environment, with powerful teachers, and perspective that potential can be transformed into something wholly different. Let's talk about it. What are the things in your life that bring joy and/or pain. What works for you and what doesn't?? How can we ditch the binary: that's good and that's bad. This is right. That is wrong. I am right. You are wrong. How can we, instead, reach for a much more nuanced version of health, nutrition, movement, beauty, and body image? PS Learn more about the Juicy Body Blueprint!

Clearing away the debris...

Clearing away the debris...

Whether it's carb counting or step tracking or weighing yourself incessantly or just thinking murderous thoughts about that one co-worker who never stops with the diet talk - what thoughts/stories are you hanging onto in an unhealthy way? How are these thoughts keeping you from seeing the potential for peace and solution and why are they so hard to let go of? I wanna know: What debris (mental or physical) are you ready to clear...and what are you making space for? A Guide to Feeling Sexy When You Feel Anything But.

A Guide to Feeling Sexy When You Feel Anything But.

What makes you feel sexy? It’s a cringe-worthy question and when I ask it of the women I work with it’s usually met with some confusion. Like, “whaaaaaa? I have no idea what makes me feel sexy but I do know that I don’t feel it - and I’m not sure it’s even possible for me to feel it - because I don’t look it”. Today on the podcast I'm talking about what it might look like to reclaim the word sexy, on your terms.  I'll also be talking about the format of the podcast, moving forward, and a fun Juicy Body Blueprint off, just for YOU!!

Juicy Body Challenge Day 7: Bringing the JUICY into your whole life

Juicy Body Challenge Day 7: Bringing the JUICY into your whole life

Our final day together… *snif*  It’s been an amazing week and I hate for it end. But if it must end, then let's blow this thing out of the water, yes? Day 7 it’s about letting the JUiCINESS you've been cultivating all week, flow from food, body, and movement into - and all over - your LIFE. Caitlin Moran recently released a new book. In it, she describes the moment she realized that diet culture had found a way to weasel in and set up shop INSIDE her teenage daughters. No longer just floating around in the ether but living inside them - convincing them they’re too ugly and too large, and consequently, worth very little.  It’s heartbreaking to read - as a woman with daughters and a woman who remembers all too well that same moment in her own life.  I spend the better part of each and every work day coaching women through this moment, and the years that follow. Before reading this book I felt fairly certain I had all the analogies and tools and strategies that I’d ever need. But I was wrong. Caitlin somehow manages to convey all the messages and analogies and power of this work in one simple paragraph. I’m going to do a dastardly job of paraphrasing here but I know you’ll forgive me because the message is worth it! Here goes… She says - of the quote “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” - it’s not your job in life to be the beauty. It’s not your job to bend and mold yourself into a shape that others might deem beautiful (or not). Your job is to BE THE BEHOLDER. To build a life that feels beautiful to YOU. And that, my gorgeous gumdrop, is your action item for the day. Tune in to today's episode for more details and then hop over to Instagram to join in on the conversation and WIN SOME PRIIIIIZES! Juicy Body Challenge Day 6: The most frivolous but fundamental piece of this work

Juicy Body Challenge Day 6: The most frivolous but fundamental piece of this work

Ooooh, mama! Are you ready for today?! She’s a BIGGIE! It’s day 6 of the Juicy Body challenge - we’ve gotten to know each other a bit, I’ve been pushing you to trust yourself and now (NOW!) I want you to trust me. Because today is all about the erotic. Living it. Breathing it. Bringing it into your life. When I say the word erotic, I always conjure up an image of a very bad, purple-y website filled with dated pictures, clip art, Papyrus font, and cheap see-through materials.  70s-era sexy. But that’s not the kind of erotic I’m talking about. I want you to think fresh, vital, vibrant, and modern. Hot pink and red. Playful and flirty. I want you to think - EROS. Eros is a connection to the physical pleasures of the world that inspire and motivate. It’s not just about sex, though that’s a pretty great piece of the puzzle - it’s about possessing the qualities of curiosity, fun, and spontaneity that take life from mundane to magical. That reminds us our time on this spinning globe of water + tectonic plates is supposed to be an adventure! “The erotic landscape is vastly larger, richer, and more intricate than the physiology of sex or any repertoire of sexual techniques. It’s the unexpected yet welcomed touch on a great first date; running into a dear old friend and absconding together for a drink; traveling to a brand new place and experiencing it unfold before you. As Octavio Paz has implied, eroticism is the poetry of the body the way that poetry is the eroticism of language. Eroticism is cultivating pleasure for its own sake. It’s about bringing adventure back into play and creativity into our lives.” - Esther Perel Absconding for a drink! Isn't that the best?! Everyday translation: I want you to work to bring PLEASURE, in all its forms back into your life. Your challenge, today, is to do something that feels indulgently GOOD for no other reason than it feels good. Tune in to today's episode for more details on the challenge of the day and then hop over to Instagram to join in on the conversation and WIN SOME PRIIIIIZES! Juicy Body Challenge Day 5: Whatever you’re doing, do the opposite!

Juicy Body Challenge Day 5: Whatever you’re doing, do the opposite!

If I had to place my money on something (and I’m the kind of woman who spends a whopping 25 cents on a slot machine while in Las Vegas for a week - you know- a real gambling kinda gal) I’d bet that you don’t have a fabulous relationship with exercise. If you do - that’s great. Seriously, you smelly like fairy farts and that 25 cents is ALL YOURS. But if you don’t - or if you’re interested in mixing things up abit - I’d love for you to try something new on for size. I’d like you to stop doing the exercise you THINK you should do or the exercise you ALWAYS do, and explore what movement might feel good in your body right now. Today is all about widening the range of activities that we consider "exercise". It's about experimenting to see if your body might want/need something new, shrugging off ideas about the "right" way to move, and listening to what your body is asking for.  AKA Internally led movement AKA Juicy Body Moving Tune in to today's episode for more details on how to explore Juicy Body Movement in a whole new way... and then hop over to Instagram to join in on the conversation and WIN a $30 gift card to Starbucks! Juicy Body Challenge Day 4: When I say “Eat for Pleasure” what comes to mind?

Juicy Body Challenge Day 4: When I say “Eat for Pleasure” what comes to mind?

It’s day four of the challenge, we're at the halfway(ish) mark, and I'd like to take a moment to cheer you on from my chair... You’re here. You’re learning, experimenting, getting curious and just being a general rock star. THANK YOU! This work has transformed my relationship with food, body, and MY HEALTH in incredible ways and I love that I get to share it with you.  Let’s recap what you’ve done so far: You’ve tuned in to how you feel IN and ABOUT your body You’ve begun to identify the diet culture voice in your head, so you can separate yourself from it You’ve tuned in to internal regulators and you’re playing with trusting them It’s all a bit tricky, I know. This work takes time and practice to embody but becoming aware of what needs to change - in order to relate differently to nutrition and body - is the first step. You’re on your way!!! Moving on to today… Let's talk DREAM MEALS. My ideal meal is a big huge salad, filled with vegetables, a roasted nut or seed of some sort, possibly a dried fruit, and a bit of feta. Serve that chaos up with a side of hot fries and a cold glass of sauvignon blanc (or Kombucha), and I’m a pig in shit.  I also love the comfort of pasta (long noodles only, obviously. I’m not 5), with garlic and olive oil, and a ton of parm and pepper. I prefer to eat it out of a huge bowl that I share with my husband, while we plan for a super sexy night that may or may not happen - depending on how long it takes to get the kids to bed. #romance I feel most nourished when I eat a balance of fresh produce and more-ish carbs. Did you notice?  I didn’t mention specific servings sizes, or foods to fear, or how to cut things out?  {Note: If you avoid certain foods for medical, religious, or sensitivity reasons - that’s cool. This doesn't apply to those types of limitations} Juicy Body Eating is all about focusing on what makes your body feel good + nourished your emotional self + allows for connection with others... Juicy Body Challenge Day 3: What Gets in the Way?

Juicy Body Challenge Day 3: What Gets in the Way?

Are you making your breakfast decisions or is Gwyneth Paltrow? Are you deciding when you’re hungry or are you leaving that up to Gary Taubes (fun fact: I just had to google a Keto “expert” to insert in here. lol) Do you know what satiates you or is Good Housekeeping magazine telling you what foods are filling? Do you know when you're full or is your point counter calling the shots? My point: are you truly tuned into your body or are you letting outside “experts”, books, magazines, blogs, tv, scales, and trackers make all the decisions? Are you outsourcing your well-being? Are you trusting “THEM” more than you trust you? Note: I keep putting the word EXPERT in air quotes which I realize is a bit cheeky because experts do exist (hi!!!) but I want you to begin questioning anyone who thinks they know your body better than you do and encourages you to consistently override what your body is asking for. You here me?? It's time to take back your power. Yesterday, I encouraged you to begin to get to know the diet culture voice in your head - the one that reinforces all those food and weight rules, from all those external places and "experts", that you've picked up along the way. The goal? To separate yourself from the voice that's creating all the drama in your head, so you can do what I'm gonna ask you to do today.  Today is all about becoming INTERNALLY led. As in, checking in with your body and making decisions based on what is right for YOU. Juicy Body Challenge Day 2: Food Rules for Intuitive Eaters

Juicy Body Challenge Day 2: Food Rules for Intuitive Eaters

It’s Day two of the Juicy Body Challenge, baby! Are you ready to jump off a cliff with me? No? You didn’t realize that’s what you were signing up for? Well - it a metaphorical cliff, if that makes you feel better? The metaphorical cliff is called TRUST. The foundation of a juicy body and a juicy body life is TRUST. Trusting yourself to know what’s right for you - and in moments of confusion, trusting that you’ll seek out the answers you need until you find them. And trusting that if you make a mistake, at any point along the road, you can course correct. TRUST. She’s a biggie. And your trust journey, my lovely little kumquat, starts today. Today you begin to shed old ideas about how women SHOULD eat, what they SHOULD eat, when they SHOULD eat and why… and you’re gonna figure out how the heck you actually LIKE to eat. What feels ideal in your body? How food, in all of it’s sensorial divineness, fits into your ideal life. The first step? Becoming of aware of the ways that old programming is still controlling you and getting in the way of TRUST. Your action for today is to be on the lookout for old diet mentality and FOOD RULES. Back on Track: Why do you fall "off track" in the summer?

Back on Track: Why do you fall "off track" in the summer?

In this episode Jill discusses our cyclical nature - and how it's misinterpreted as bad, falling "off track", or self-sabotaging. Old programming about your body will lead you to believe that you should be static, linear, and never-changing. That your food quantity and variety should never change, nor should your movement routines - but different seasons ask for different things from us - and summer is a season of slowing down (even as we bop from one social event to the next) to experience and savour. It's natural to let our routines fall away.  It's also natural to feel the pull of routine and rhythm as the season draws to a close.  Other things she chats about: clarifying the slightly controversial name for this series who the series is for her new Juicy Body GROUP workshop - it's free and it's coming up on September 15th. register via the link below! The Unfortunate Truth About Weight Stigma and Disordered Eating in Clinicians

The Unfortunate Truth About Weight Stigma and Disordered Eating in Clinicians

It's a tough and uncomfortable topic but it's a fact: health and wellness clinicians are often struggling with their own relationship with food and body, are perpetuating fatphobic health beliefs, and imposing weight stigma on those they work with. In this episode, Jillian is talking about some of the facts and figures (when surveyed, 49.5% of dieticians were at risk for orthorexia and 12.9% were at risk for an eating disorder), the negative outcomes of shame and weight stigma and the possibility of an anti-diet, weight inclusive NON-stigmatizing approach to health.  She covers: Some stats the issues with health and nutrition education Conflating health outcomes with positive health behaviours First steps toward a better model for health! A Look Inside My Career Trajectory and How I Ended Up Doing This Work.

A Look Inside My Career Trajectory and How I Ended Up Doing This Work.

We completed the last episode in this series of Sessions last week. Today, Jillian is taking you inside of her long and cringe-y journey to finding this work and this point in her career. She talks about why it's okay to feel like a flake, why we often need to pivot in our careers multiple times, and the importance of pushing past the definitions we're given for health & wellness in order to create a model and philosophy that we're excited to live (and sell!) every day.  She also discusses: The details of her new program - an 8 week intensive called Redefining Health for Professionals & Practitioners Who this program is for? Why this work will transform your practice/business and the results you get with your patients and clients Special bonuses to look out for! Session 7: When You're the Practitioner, Who Takes YOU Deeper in the Work?

Session 7: When You're the Practitioner, Who Takes YOU Deeper in the Work?

What happens when we try to hold ourselves to a standard that may not be possible or correct for us? In this 1:1 Session, Jillian works with a holistic health coach who feels like she's not where she'd like to be in her comfort or confidence around her body. She feels like her eating habits are erratic, that she still eats emotionally and mindlessly more often that is helpful, and that her progress is slow and messy. She's wondering how to continue to encourage others on their journey when she feels a bit stalled out on hers... They also discuss: Fine tuning how you think things "should look" for practitioners Why body image work is a process The myths of the food freedom/body love process (i.e. needing to rest is wrong, carving out time shouldn't be necessary, progress should be linear and clear) Dismantling the idea of 'perfect eating' The connection between how you feel about your body and how you approach food Aspiration to get to some mythical, happy, end point in the work, where you’re completely healed Why putting in time and effort is part of Intuitive eating - and part of reclaiming your worth Taking time to rest and integrate before moving on to the next level Making peace with our bodies as they change through this process Why it's totally normal for a practitioner to understand trust-based eating inside and out - but not be 'the best' at it! Session 6: When Your Health & Wellness Education Doesn’t Include YOU!

Session 6: When Your Health & Wellness Education Doesn’t Include YOU!

In this episode of Sessions - a podcast series where Jillian is working with individuals, live, 1:1 - Jillian works with a naturopathic medical student who is realizing that her education is missing some key ingredients. Worse than that, she's doubting her abilities as a practitioner because she doesn't feel like she "fits the mold" of health she's learning about. This session is all about deciding it's time to stop fitting-in and start breaking those old molds - so we can innovate and update and create health & wellness spaces that are safe and inclusive for all.  In this episode they discuss: Struggling with your own body image issues, while trying to be the health navigator for others Contradictory nutrition messaging in school. Who do you believe? Feeling frustrated that you have to go outside of your long and expensive education to find all the missing pieces Wondering why we learn all about the WHAT when it comes to food in education, but none of the HOW Missing the greater context when it comes to food choices and access to health Wanting to work with others but feeling like you're not measuring-up or fitting in Having to work with the bodies of others when you’re stuck in compare and despair Trying to figure out YOUR opinion when you’re taking in the thoughts and feelings of others Learning how to NOT be a trigger for future patients CLICK HERE to get your FREE SELF AUDIT: The 7 Key Components of a Wellness Practice. Session 5: When You Feel Like You’re Fighting a Losing Battle

Session 5: When You Feel Like You’re Fighting a Losing Battle

In this episode of Sessions - a podcast series where Jillian works with individuals, live, 1:1 - Jillian works with a registered holistic nutritionist and fitness coach who is struggling to find her footing in the anti-diet world. How do you compete with a 60 billion dollar weight loss industry and years of indoctrination? How do you offer up trust when all anyone is really interested in is control?  In this episode they cover: Messaging. Being very clear on what you do and what you sell to avoid frustration. How to work with people who want to be DONE with dieting... but also want to lose weight? Is it confusing to post about food on social media? Does it send the wrong message? Shrugging off assumptions about your profession Are you strong enough in the fundamentals of this work? Is it possible that personal wavering is affecting your message? How the diet industry is co-opting anti-diet messaging and making it so messy for everyone A niche can be many things - it doesn't need to be a condition. It could be an age group! The need to find community and persevere CLICK HERE to get your FREE SELF AUDIT: The 7 Key Components of a Wellness Practice. Session 4: Doing the Work at Home, With Your Kids

Session 4: Doing the Work at Home, With Your Kids

In this session, Jillian is working 1:1 with a mom who is an eating disorder survivor and works in the eating disorder field. She's excited and committed to Intuitive Eating and raising her daughters with a much more progressive view of food and bodies - but there are some tricky spots. In this session, they explore the challenges with trust-based eating models, particularly when you've survived an eating disorder and work in a field where you're exposed to the repercussions of control, everyday.  They also discuss: How do you protect your kids from this culture When you're interested in Intuitive Eating but scared that you might be throwing your kids into an experiment! How the hardest thing about letting go of trust is worrying about where your child's body will end up, and how it will affect them Trying to figure out the roadmap for a positive body image Saying NO. When is it appropriate structure and when is it restriction? When having a history of eating disorders, and working in the eating disorder field, leads to biases and fears in feeding When and how to talk about 'healthy' food vs 'unhealthy' food Why kids struggle with nutritional information When kids are ready - and primed - to really get into the issues with the healthy food concept and the ideals behind it CLICK HERE to get on the wait list for Jillian's brand new 8 week intensive - Redefining Health: For Professionals and Practitioners Check out the intensive details HERE.

Session 3: The Frustration of Helping Others While You Feel Like You're Struggling More Than Ever

Session 3: The Frustration of Helping Others While You Feel Like You're Struggling More Than Ever

In this session Jillian works with a mental health professional who feels like she's saying all the right things, giving great advice and guidance to those she works with - while struggling herself. The ongoing trauma of listening to others berate their bodies regularly is destabilizing her and she can't find the support she needs, despite a warm and friendly work environment, because her colleagues are still stuck in diet culture.  In this episode, they discuss: How to protect yourself when you're working with others who struggle with food and body Why it's so hard to find support The frustration of knowing how to coach others through these issues, and seeing them succeed, while you stays stuck When work baggage shows up as reactive eating in your own life How hard it is to stay true to your path when your path still isn’t clear - and it's being affected by the things you hear at work everyday When the real work isn't about food or body - but about self-acceptance, worth, and enough-ness The grief of 'otherness' - sitting in it and feeling your way through it Why sometimes it’s easier to take a stand for others when we can't quite do it for ourselves CLICK HERE to get on the wait list for Jillian's brand new 8 week intensive - Redefining Health: For Professionals and Practitioners Check out the program details HERE.

Session 2: Working in a WHOLE New Way (and Figuring Out How to Explain it to Your Colleagues!)

Session 2: Working in a WHOLE New Way (and Figuring Out How to Explain it to Your Colleagues!)

In this episode, Jill works with a naturopathic doctor who's figuring out how to work from an anti-diet, weight-inclusive perspective. Her clients are demanding it - they are DONE with diets - but she's never been taught how to work with food in a trust-based way.  So begs the question - if we aren't just going to cut out gluten and dairy - what are we going to do? In this episode they discuss: Add-in strategies for treatment The foundation for trust-based eating and how to teach it Why it can be so hard (and sometimes impossible) for people to cut out foods or food groups... and how to work around it Working with people who've been told by their MD that if they don't lose weight, they'll "never get better" What to do when you work in a practice filled with people who still buy into diet mentality and weight loss strategies CLICK HERE to get on the wait list for Jillian's brand new 8 week intensive - Redefining Health: For Professionals and Practitioners Check out the intensive details HERE.

Session 1: Next Steps for a Practitioner Working On Her Own Personal Journey... In Order to take her Clients Further

In this episode, Jillian works live, 1:1, with a practitioner who is struggling on her own personal journey to embodiment and food peace.  In it they explore: the education she received and if there were important, fundamental truths of this work left out or watered-down what it takes to get out of your head and into your body a key, often forgotten, internal regulator digestive distress, is it real or created by negative food judgements and beliefs? how to manage a partner and children who view food and exercise completely differently is sugar affecting your hormones? when and how we should focus on food to improve health If you're a health & wellness professional and you're looking to shift your work to an anti-diet, weight-inclusive perspective (or if you're already working this way but you want to strengthen the foundation of your work) hop on the waitlist for my newest 8 week intensive training HERE.

The Very Best Post-Holiday Reset (no celery juice required!)

Welcome back to home for the holidays!! We are on verge of wrapping up this beautiful messy year. I'd like to challenge you to find the ultimate, fits-you-like-a-cozy-sweater, food/movement/well-being plan that helps you feel like a million bucks on a Friday night before a month-long vacation for 2021.  When you find it, you'll discover that it's the very best New Year reset you've experienced - and wowy-wow-wow - it'll never even once ask you to cut carbs or consume spirulina (Seriously. That stuff is PEE-U). One thing though, I want to warn you that it might be hard to find. In fact, I'd like to suggest that the reason you haven’t yet found this ultimate reset plan that leads to incredible health and well-being while loving and honouring all of you - like John loves Chrissy - is because.... Oops! Can't I tell you that here. You need to tune in!

Home for the Holidays: 3 Top Tips for Holiday Food and Body Triggers

Home for the Holidays: 3 Top Tips for Holiday Food and Body Triggers

Last week I talked about The Arc of the holidays and the internal battle that often gets triggered when it comes to weight and health.  We chatted about the tough realization that even the most ardent feminist can find herself falling back into old, diet-y patterns when her confidence is shaken by an indulgent holiday, jeans that feel a bit tight, as well as (non-holiday related) aging, health and changing and body concerns. And then I left you hanging. I was like: 'So, there’s this arc that's likely to play out over the holidays. And it's going to trigger an internal battle that leaves you feeling stuck and vulnerable. Okay! See ya!'. Today I'm making up for it! I'm offering up a solid three-step plan for managing the arc and the mess that follows. Links: The Food Freedom/Body Love Signature 1:1 Program Brand New! Home for the Holidays: The Internal Battle

Home for the Holidays: The Internal Battle

Today I'm talking about what I lovingly call 'The Arc' of the holidays. It's that predictable pattern - where even the most intuitive-eating, body-accepting, diet-rejecting, stigma-fighting female starts to feel the holidays catch-up with her and finds old programming (i.e. the desire to hop on a restrictive 'reset' program) popping up in a MAJOR way. It feels bad. Like, really bad. Not only to feel bad about your body but to feel bad ABOUT feeling bad about your body - when you know you should 'be better' at body acceptance than this.  Sound familiar? Tune in to today's episode.

BEYOND WEIGHT: On Nutrition in Schools with Shalyn Yamanaka-Wong

BEYOND WEIGHT: On Nutrition in Schools with Shalyn Yamanaka-Wong

It’s the final episode of Beyond Weight - and today, Jill is speaking with Shalyn Yamanaka-Wong. Shalyn is a dietitian who helps families turn stressful mealtimes into relaxing, enjoyable meals.  She understands schools and parents struggles with feeding children and helps them raise children with a positive relationship with food and their bodies.  She currently lives in Singapore, but works with schools and families all over the world... and today we're talking about Nutrition in Schools! In this episode, we discuss: The realization that the life-long struggle with food and body starts young - and schools enforce it Nutrition messaging in schools - it comes from the curriculum and also from the people who teach and care for our children, most of whom have no nutrition education When parents affect the curriculum and nutrition messaging at school The unrealistic, and sometimes conflicting, expectations parents have for their children and eating...and why it makes everyone feel like they’re failing Worries about the quality of food AND the quantity of food kids are eating while at school How do we learn to trust kids with sugar? The challenge of teaching about food in school when eating is often a curriculum and schedule afterthought Kids aren’t eating at the right times and aren’t given enough time to eat How food insecurity changes parental concerns The ideal way to teach nutrition in schools Learning to feed our kids is an ongoing journey and we’re never done learning! BEYOND WEIGHT: On Feeding Neurodiverse Kids with Deb Blakley

BEYOND WEIGHT: On Feeding Neurodiverse Kids with Deb Blakley

What do we do when there are potentially more challenges with feeding? In the eighth episode of Beyond Weight - a NEW series that asks the question “how can we manage health concerns without focusing on weight loss, food restriction, and body shame?” Jill is speaking with Deb Blakley, a nutritionist and mum who is passionate about kids learning to love food from birth and beyond. Deb loves working with children and families who are struggling with fussy eaters; problem feeders; children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) - Which is what we're talking about today! In this episode, we discuss: How Deb started working with very picky eaters The biggest struggles for all families when it comes to feeding our children Why teaching kids about nutrition and health is problematic When a big part of feeding therapy is reminding parents that their child has the ability to learn and grow Why rigidity helps neurodiverse kids feel safe and preserve energy How to work with that rigidity at the child’s pace The importance of a multidisciplinary approach Helping kids do well away from the table, affects how well they do at the table Other types of feeding therapies for autism and why they don’t often work: pressure, contextual learning, food agendas Why focusing on the journey is SO important when progress is slow The difference between “getting a kid to eat a certain food” and teaching parents how to feed Cutting out foods for neurodiverse kids: Yay or Nay? Evaluating whether your child can tolerate restriction Setting realistic expectations for progress and setting kids up for success Coping with nutritional worries when you have a very picky/rigid eater LINKS: You can find Deb at Kids Dig Food.

BEYOND WEIGHT: On Helping Without Harming When it Comes to Kids and Weight

BEYOND WEIGHT: On Helping Without Harming When it Comes to Kids and Weight

“When their parents trust them, they thrive. They learn to eat, they grow according to their nature, and they show me how wonderful our bodies are.” In the 7th episode of Beyond Weight - a NEW series that asks the question “how can we manage health concerns without focusing on weight loss, food restriction, and body shame?” - Jill is switching gears and talking about kids! That’s right! The next three episodes are focused on weight, health, and feeding issues that are unique to children - and today she’s kicking off these bonus episodes, talking with Rebeca Hernández, about kids, weight, and health. In this episode, we discuss: Teaching parents HOW to feed instead of WHAT to feed The difference between a deficit model and a competence model Why well-intentioned parents interfere with feeding Understanding normal childhood growth Satter’s Division of Responsibility Dealing with kids who only eat potatoes or who refuse to eat dinner...only to demand food at bedtime When you should care about weight Why variety seeking is natural - even in the presence of sugary fatty food Studies Mentioned: The Postingestive Consequences of Fat Condition Preferences for Flavors Associated With High Dietary Fat. BEYOND WEIGHT: On Eating Disorders with Elizabeth Jackson

BEYOND WEIGHT: On Eating Disorders with Elizabeth Jackson

Why Weight Goals Need to Stop Being the Marker of Full Recovery. This is the 6th episode of Beyond Weight - a NEW series that asks the question “how can we manage health concerns without focusing on weight loss, food restriction, and body shame?”. Today, Jill is speaking with Elizabeth Jackson, MS, RDN, LDN - a Licensed and Registered Dietitian specializing in eating disorders, child and family feeding issues, management of eating and weight-related illness and co-occurring/substance use disorders. Together they're talking about the limitations of conventional thinking about Eating Disorders, when we do need to think about weight and meal plans, and how to do those things while holding a higher ideal for recovery. We also talk about the issue with weight goals - how it can lead to misdiagnosis, misunderstanding, and only partial eating disorder recovery. In this episode, we discuss: Monitoring physiological factors vs weight goals Believing patients when they report what they are eating - and why some practitioners might not believe Jackson’s Individual Weight Continuum (examines physiological markers instead of specific weights) Treating the individual and the importance of story Trauma from food insecurity Why a moderate lifestyle is more than enough How to get more intentional if it’s right and interesting for you… without falling into old diet traps Fixing the relationship with food FIRST When Intuitive Eating is not a good fit for eating disorders What we CAN’T control Why weight restoration goals should NOT be led by BMI When eating is NOT malleable… what can we do? Links: https://www.ellynsatterinstitute.org/product/prof-web-bodypositive/ TW: In this episode, we loosely discuss weight, calories, and a few diet plans are mentioned. Please listen only if these topics aren't triggering for you. Also - these sessions are designed to educate and entertain. They are not prescriptive. If you are struggling with food and body image issues , you should reach out to your primary care provider for individual advice before self-diagnosing or treating.

I'd just like to note that the word "beautiful" feels wrong to me. I don't pretend to know what every person's experience with surgery has been, but based on what I do know I'd choose more subtle language if I were to re-record. Thanks for sticking with me as I "write in pencil" and facilitate these off the cuff conversations that aren't always perfect! TW: All of these sessions are recorded live and only moderately edited - numbers (weight, calories, etc) may come up as well as the "O" words (overweight, obese) and the mention of specific diet plans or food philosophies.
