With Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, women have not only become the backbone of defense logistics in Ukraine, but around twenty percent of the country’s fighting forces are made up by women. With most men leaving for the front, women are left to head households and keep businesses and social care running.

War changes the gender dynamics of any given society. It can both provide opportunities for rebuilding more equal post-war societies, and reinforce traditional values. 

To commemorate the one-year anniversary of the war in Ukraine and International Women's Day, we will in this conversation focus on gender aspects of war in Ukraine.

The third webinar in the Glocal Voices series focuses on how climate change contributes to conflict. What does this mean for communities on the ground? How are communities around the world responding to this growing challenge – that seems to only be accelerating?  Join us for a discussion moderated by a leading expert in climate-conflict-gender, Amiera Sawas, Action Aid. Together with community leaders from across the world we will discuss how climate change is exacerbating conflict, learn what people and communities are already doing about it, and what more needs to be done.

On this second webinar, we will have a context analysis of how civil society in Europe, West Africa and Latin America, have been experiencing and responding to the increase of gender-based violence, as an effect of the Covid-19 crisis. On a 90-minute discussion, we will share the insights of civil society representatives from Sweden, Belarus, Liberia and Colombia.

In the first Glocal Voices webinar, we will talk about how governments and civil society are coping with the Covid-19 crisis in Latin and Central America, and in Eastern Africa. We have participants from Brasil, Colombia, Guatemala, Kenya, Somalia and Tanzania, who will share their insights and ideas in a 90-minute live chat.

The Corona pandemic has hit democracy and civil rights hard in many parts of the world, with further limited space for civil society. In Colombia violence against human rights defenders has increased, in Kenya police brutality has been used to enforce the restrictions and in Belarus, the election has led to major protests and increased threats against civil society.

What role can Sweden and the government's Drive for Democracy play to promote democracy and the space for civil society in these and other countries when societies are opening up again?
