33. How Exercise (and Exercise Mindset) Affects Eating Disorder Recovery with Kathryn Coniglio
FIND ME!
Kathryn Coniglio is a PhD candidate and National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow in clinical psychology at Rutgers University studying eating disorders. She has authored over 25 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters in academic textbooks and has presented her research at national and international conferences. Her program of research explores ways to improve detection of pathological exercise as well as ways to help folks in recovery from eating disorders re-engage with exercise in an adaptive, sustainable way.
She has worked as a clinician in both behavioral medicine settings and in eating disorder treatment settings and was continually struck by the vastly diverging viewpoints that each of these “camps” has about exercise. In primary healthcare settings, exercise is often prescribed with a “more is always better” attitude, whereas eating disorder clinicians are often very skeptical of exercise. Her entire program of research explores this gray area that exists in between these two extremes.

BONUS EPISODE: Trauma, Control and Undiagnosed Eating Disorders with Michele Simms
This is a recycling of a guest spot. I had the pleasure of speaking with Michele Simms, host of The Beauty in the Mess podcast.
Michele Simms is a Christian, wife, and mother of 4 along with two furbabies. She is a toolmaker by trade, a database Administrator, and a Professional Maintenance Co-Lead at a large automotive facility by day. She and her family have had many significant health issues over the years, and in 2021, she felt a nudge from God to start her podcast, The Beauty in The Mess, in order to share others' wisdom, knowledge, and experiences along with a little of her own. There are always gifts even in some of the darkest situations if we look hard enough (a lesson learned, a connection, faith, etc.). The hope is that we can all help each other overcome life's challenges easier and quicker and accelerate our journeys to who we were truly meant to be in this life.

BONUS EPISODE! Binge eating, perfectionism and the human brain with Cristina Castagnini
This is a reposting of an episode I recorded with Cristina Castagnini for her Behind the Bite Podcast.
Cristina Castagnini, Ph.D., CEDS, is a licensed psychologist and is recognized as a Certified Eating
Disorder Specialist by the International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals (IAEDP). She
graduated with honors, earning her bachelor’s degree in psychology from The University of California,
Santa Cruz, her Master’s Degree in clinical psychology (with an emphasis in Marriage and Family
Therapy) from Pepperdine University and her doctoral degree in counseling psychology at the University
of Southern California.
For over the past 20 years, Dr. Castagnini has been treating patients with a variety of mental health
diagnoses, supervising postdoctoral residents, and continuing to grow her private practice. After
overcoming her own struggles with having an eating disorder, it was always her dream to focus solely on
helping women overcome their struggles with food and body image and to achieve a balanced life.
She feels fortunate that she is now able to do just that, as in October of 2019, after 15 years as the lead
adult eating disorder specialist at Kaiser Permanente, Dr. Castagnini left to open the doors to her private
practice full time in the San Francisco Bay Area.
She aims to find the work-life balance being a single mom to two awesome teenagers, but knows first-
hand there is just no way to do it all.

Today's episode is based on a quote I heard entrepreneur and founder of #GetUpandGrow Tony Rodrigues (@tonyrodrigues2.0) say in a Clubhouse room the other day: BE THE PERSON YOU WISH YOU HAD WHEN YOU WERE STRUGGLING.
SO talk to me. What are you struggling with? How can I help you? How can Teach Balance Wellness help you? I WANT TO BE THE PERSON YOU HAVE IF YOU'RE STRUGGLING.
Drop me a line on Instagram, Facebook, LInkedIn or email me. I'd love to hear how I can better serve you.
