It took two and a half years from Abraham Lincoln signing the Emancipation Proclamation for the news to reach Texas. It was on June 19th 1865 that the Union soldiers landed at Galveston with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. Several events are planned around Galveston, and we encourage everyone to visit the Juneteenth Statue located at Ashton Villa, in front of the Galveston Island Visitor Center at 23rd and Broadway (image shown on this podcast preview). Their goal for this event is to help boost the Galveston economy, give back to the local community, and be an awesome place where families and friends can gather.
