The SF Episode: The SF Housing Crisis, SF’s Transgender District, SF’s Candidate for District Supervisor – with Honey Mahogany, Chair of SF Democrats
SF is in the air and on the airwaves this episode, because we go all-in on the politics of Maddie’s neck of the woods. A conversation that covers a ton of ground and provides an insightful look at SF and even CA as a whole’s politics, this episode features an interview with the one, the only, the amazing Honey Mahogany. Not only is Honey the Chair of SF Democrats, but Honey is also running for District 6 Supervisor, which is a HUGE role. No, like, the way in which we learned so much about how this role operates is next level. We also got into how Democratic clubs and organizations like the SF Democrats work (and how to get involved with them) and what their role is. And, as this is a classic all the things episode, we get into Honey’s POV on the SF housing crisis and how it can be remedied. And to cap it all off with something that truly a slay, we talk about Honey’s role in founding SF’s Transgender District, the amazing programs available through it, and what the district’s founding celebrates.

Ditching Dark Money in Politics, The Next Steps With Congressman Dean Phillips, MN-3
Ditching Dark Money in Politics, The Next Steps With Congressman Dean Phillips, MN-3
Money, money, moneyyyyyyy! That is what this episode is all about – specifically dark money in politics. You know, that shady, sus thing that seems to have a way of controlling what policies make it across the finish line. To get the rundown on what dark money is and how we can say toodle-loo to it, we brought on a Congressman who has been making a name for himself as a leader on campaign finance reform – Congressman Dean Phillips of Minnesota’s third district. In convo, he gives us more than chump change on why dark money is so prevalent, how it’s used, and the legislation that’s needed to fix this issue. For a glimpse ahead, we talk about the DISCLOSE Act, Honest Ads Act, Get Foreign Money Out of Elections Act, AND a select committee of note – the US House Select Committee on the Modernization of Congress.

Congressional Committees, Running for Senate, and Tons of Tea with Vermont Congressman Peter Welch; Candidate for US Senate
Congressional Committees, Running for Senate, and Tons of Tea with Vermont Congressman Peter Welch; Candidate for US Senate
To say that we had fun recording this episode is the understatement of the year. And why is that? Because Vermont’s lone Congressman Peter Welch is an absolute hoot – oh, and also a candidate for the Senate. Our conversation touches on the experience of being a lone representative of a state (one that breeds political powerhouses BTW) and his decision to make the switch from Congress to Senate. We also tapped him for the deats on key committees, like the House Committee on Energy and Commerce and the House Committee on Oversight and Reform. Importantly, VERY importantly, we got into the tea on these, like what happens if you end up on a committee you absolutely hate or working with your literal arch nemesis. Congressman Welch gives POV and we gave him the name of what we call Mitch McConnell – for better or worse.

A Lens on Incarceration & Justice Initiatives with Dr. Nneka Jones Tapia, Managing Director of Justice Initiatives at Chicago Beyond
Our interview episode is host to an amazing guest this week – Dr. Nneka Jones Tapia, Managing Director of Justice Initiatives at Chicago Beyond. Dr. Jones Tapia provides a lens on incarceration and its impact inside and outside of prison walls. From her work with the system and as a psychologist she helps paint the picture of what incarceration does to the people incarcerated, their families, their communities, and other stakeholders. In our conversation, she also provides insights on how to change the system through her work at Chicago Beyond, and create systems-level change. We also chat terms, from the difference between jail and prison, to the prison pipeline to collective trauma, and more.
PS top stories this week and this week only are in an abridged version at the top of the episode.

Ballot Measures x 2 with Kelly Hall, Executive Director of the Fairness Project & Amy Fitch Heacock, Arizonans for Reproductive Freedom
Ballot Measures x 2 with Kelly Hall, Executive Director of the Fairness Project & Amy Fitch Heacock, Arizonans for Reproductive Freedom
It’s our 100th episode and as Obama would say, it’s a BFD. It’s a BFD not just because we’ve made it to the 1-0-0, BUT because we have a special double header episode with two kickass, badass, politicos. The episode is focused on ballot measures, specifically ballot measures as they relate to reproductive rights. Our interviews touch on the various processes per state on jumpstarting a ballot measure, what the journeys look like for getting them on the ballot, direct democracy, petitioning, and so much more. Basically, welcome to ballot measure 101. Oh, and the amazing guests?? Fine, we’ll spill – we’re joined by Kelly Hall, Executive Director of the Fairness Project who gives all the details on Michigan’s repro rights ballot measure, and Amy Fitch Heacock, of Arizonans for Reproductive Freedom who shares the 411 on AZ’s battle for a ballot measure and what’s ahead in the fight for 2024.
We’re grateful for these convos and we’re grateful for our listeners. Cheers to episode 100 and to 100 more :) We love you guys!

Reforming SCOTUS with Gabe Roth, Executive Director of Fix the Court
Reforming SCOTUS with Gabe Roth, Executive Director of Fix the Court
After a brutal last session with SCOTUS, there were sighs of exasperation and many a discussion about how the Court got to place it’s at. In the same vein, there were many discussions about possible SCOTUS reforms, i.e. how to change the court so that it once again works for the people and not for a supercharged, superfunded majority. We hosted one of those conversations with Gabe Roth, Executive Director of Fix the Court, who focuses on – you guessed it – how to reform the court via policy. In our chat, we get into possible solutions like term limits, and discuss big loopholes surrounding media and ethics when it relates to how the court operates. We also talk about the talking point meets policy suggestion that is expanding the Court – the good, the bad, and ugly with it. If you’re curious about how to fix SCOTUS, this episode is going to fit the bill.

WTF is inflation?! With CNBC Contributor and Founder at New Street Advisors, Delano Saporu
WTF is inflation?! With CNBC Contributor and Founder at New Street Advisors, Delano Saporu
At this point, we’ve heard the word inflation, on average, 10 million times per day since this spring. It’s the word of (every) day, the topic of the moment, and perhaps the campaign weapon of choice for Republicans going into the midterms. And for that reason, and perhaps 10 million more, it’s pretty key to be tuned into what inflation actually is, what causes it, what reduces it, what people (politicians included) can do or not do about it, and so on. Since we’re not math girls (we wish we were but alas we can’t win ‘em all), we brought in our go-to econ expert, CNBC Contributor and Founder at New Street Advisors, Delano Saporu to answer all of our q’s – and yours too! Many an audience q was answered and we love to see it.

TikTok Tea, The BS On The DCCC, and Running For Congress With Miami City Commissioner & Congressional Candidate (FL-27), Ken Russell
If you’ve heard of Ken Russell’s campaign for Congress, it might be because you’re deep in FL politics, but more likely than not it’s because of the TikTok stardom he has come into over the last year. The TikTok talent knows a thing about politics (hello, currently is a Miami City Commissioner), and how to meet people (voters) where they are (sound familiar), which is social media. His TikTok is a master class on how to show authenticity and transparency for candidates up and down the ballot, and we talk about why this is still being slept on by some of the major dem orgs. We also talk about the inner workings there (cough cough the flip flopping he experienced), the tea around Miami politics, and the impetus for his political career in the first place.

The 411 on Lt. Governors, VT Politics, and more with Lt. Governor of VT and Congressional Candidate, Molly Gray
The 411 on Lt. Governors, VT Politics, and more with Lt. Governor of VT and Congressional Candidate, Molly Gray
Another day, another mysterious elected position explained! In this episode, we cover lieutenant governors, a role that not all states have, that differs in role per state, and makes us more curious than George. To answer all of our q’s, we brought the expert in – Lt. Governor of Vermont, Molly Gray – who got us squared away with answers galore. Butttt, there’s more, because Molly is also running for Vermont’s one Congressional Seat (yep, you heard that right, the Green Mt. State only has one seat) and we get into the issues she’s running on and what she wants to make happen in Congress.

The Key to Protecting Democracy - Secretaries of State with Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson
The Key to Protecting Democracy - Secretaries of State with Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson
There is something in the water in Michigan, because the executive branch is home to THREE absolute powerhouse women in politics, one of which is Secretary of State, Jocelyn Benson. At the forefront of protecting election integrity and democracy in 2020 and onward, Secretary of State Benson truly understands the importance of this position. In our interview with her, we walk through what this vital role does, which states have them, and the various ways they work with others in government – hint: there’s even a group chat. We get into the role, we get into her reelection campaign, and we get into the tea.

Reproductive Justice with Monica Simpson, Executive Director of SisterSong
Reproductive Justice with Monica Simpson, Executive Director of SisterSong
Honored, thrilled, over the moon, and beyond excited are a few of the phrases we’d use to describe how we felt going into this interview and how we feel releasing it. We had the pleasure of sitting down virtually with the incredible Monica Simpson, who is the Executive Director of SisterSong. In our conversation, we chatted about SisterSong, the work they do as a coalition, and two key topics – reproductive justice and birth justice. Through our conversation we talk about what each is, how they intersect, and how these movements not only came about but continue to be relevant (even more so) in a post-Roe world. We also discuss the overwhelmingly disproportionate impact that the overturning of Roe has on BIPOC people, and the long ignored issue of access (just because something’s legal, doesn’t mean all people have access to it).

Moore v. Harper, Independent State Leg. Theory, Constitutional Crisis with Ben Sheehan
Moore v. Harper, Independent State Leg. Theory, Constitutional Crisis with Ben Sheehan
We’re back with Ben, Ben Sheehan to be exact, for an episode on the case that has us politicos at the edge of seats – Moore v. Harper. A case that calls upon a once fringe theory, Independent State Legislature Theory, we talk about whether or not SCOTUS taking this case on will take us on the express train to a constitutional crisis. Naturally, we talk about what’s likely to happen here, how this all came to be, and what we can do now (like literally NOW) to lessen the potential impact.
P.S. Go listen to our Top Stories epi released yesterday AKA the episode right before this one ;)

Campaign Management, Strategists, Consultants, And More With Campaign Strategist, Drisana Hughes
Campaign Management, Strategists, Consultants, And More With Campaign Strategist, Drisana Hughes
We talk about getting involved with campaigns until the cows come home, but we’ve often left one part out – what on earth do the many roles on campaigns actually do! And, what they are specifically. And, how they operate together. And, what the experiences are with each. Basically, the fine print. To solve this, we brought in our friend Drisana Hughes who is a well-known and accomplished campaign strategist that has brought her genius to the campaigns of India Walton, Alvin Bragg, Scott Stringer, Prez Obama’s, and many more. In our conversation, we cover the many hats that are worn in a campaign and how to get into the space overall.

The Adoption Angle on Abortion Explained with Gretchen Sisson PhD, Sociologist
The Adoption Angle on Abortion Explained with Gretchen Sisson PhD, Sociologist
One of the many layers of the abortion conversation is adoption. It’s a layer we have yet to cover – until this episode, where we were joined by Gretchen Sisson PhD, Sociologist, an expert research in the field to discuss the many nuances of when the adoption conversation crosses path with the abortion conversation. Our conversation of course covers the basics on this intersection, but also what we can expect to see in the coming months ahead (or what might just be a ‘wait and see’).

Political Influencing & Online Activism with Katie Grossbard, Founding Member of i am a voter
If you’re not following Katie Grossbard, I’m going to need you to kindly go follow her, rn. Okay, fine, you can finish reading this description first. She is not only a founding member of the popular voting information resource - i am a voter - but she’s quite the online activist herself. Known for her roundups of top tweets on all-things politics and her in the know shares on politics happening in the moment, Katie is in the game. It’s also one that we (very biased here) think more young people should jump into. In our conversation – where we mention Steve Kornacki over 500 times (take a sip of water every time you hear his name) – we go chat about how to use one’s own social media and platforms to get the vote out and get your friends engaged with civics, and politics today.

We were joined by our amazing friend, Miss Tennessee, Tally Bevis for a chit chat on civic literacy, all-things voting, and definitely some things, political journey. Tally shares with us her civic literacy vision with her org, Vote With A Mission and the plan for her podcast, The Suffragette Series (BTW we’re going to be on an upcoming eppy so stay tuned). What do attorneys general do? With Michigan Attorney General, Dana Nessel
From the title of this episode, you might’ve gathered that this episode is a deep dive into what attorney generals do, how they’re elected, and how they work with their respective state legislatures. Okay, you might’ve just gotten the first bit on that list, but we do cover the other two as well with Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel. And importantly, we cover the AG’s current run for re-election and why AG elections are so critical to protecting our democracy. This conversation is a can’t miss and our fast five round is going to be one that has you in stitches, but you’ll have to find yourself on our TikTok @girlandthegov in the days to come to see those highlights.

Gun Harm Reduction Policies with the Mayor of San Jose, CA, Sam Liccardo
Gun Harm Reduction Policies with the Mayor of San Jose, CA, Sam Liccardo
As of May 26, 2022 there had been 214 mass shootings. There have been additional since that stat was compiled by Insider. It is clear that we have a gun issue in the US (last time we checked, the numbers don’t lie). This issue needs real solutions – now, not later – and there is one elected official that has stepped by to the plate. Cue, the Mayor of San Jose, CA, Sam Liccardo who has introduced innovative gun reform policies in his city. The policy requires gun owners to pay an annual fee and attestation of insurance coverage for accidental firearm-related injury or death, and the fees collected will be donated to a nonprofit focused on gun violence reduction. Our conversation gets into the policy – and a few others – and how mayors have flexibility in testing out policies.
PS if you also spotted Maddie’s TikTok on NRA spending on Senators, we answer your comment-questions!

The Wage Gap with Shannon Williams, Director of Equal Pay Today Campaign at ERA

This icon in activism and action is the Director of the Equal Pay Today Campaign at the ERA gave us the 411 on the wage gap, equal pay, occupational segregation, and legislation that can change the status quo. We could’ve chatted with Shannon on this for hours and hours, SO we will obviously be having her back for a part two later in the year. This episode is super special for a number of reasons. First things first, this is our first ever episode featuring TWO interviews. Our guests are two amazing women in politics, both Democrats running for office – one in a traditionally blue state at the federal level and one in a traditionally red state at the state level. The topic of conversation is reproductive rights, the likely overturning of Roe v. Wade, and legislation in the making and to come. Emily Beach, a Congressional candidate for CA-15 – a strongly Democratic district, gives us her take, her campaign, and how she is uniquely qualified to help protect reproductive rights at the negotiating table. State Representative Mandie Landry takes us to the situation in Louisiana, where she is fighting against a proposed bill that would make those seeking abortion guilty of homicide. She also sheds light on her campaign for State Senate and how if elected in the special election, she would be the only Pro-Choice woman in Louisiana’s senate. This episode brings two important POVs from two different political landscapes, which makes it a must-listen.

The headlines currently read something along the lines of “Roe v. Wade will be overturned.” But, how did we get here? What took us from almost 50 years of precedent to this unnerving outcome? A ~little~ case titled Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization paired with a conservatively stacked SCOTUS is the dual-pronged answer to that q. In this episode, we walk through the case that brought us here and the legal jargon to boot with the co-lead on the case – Senior Staff Attorney at the Center for Reproductive Rights, Hillary Schneller. An expert not only on this case, but the many abortion access cases she’s litigated on behalf of, Hillary knows the in’s and out’s and shares them all in our convo.

Electing Pro-Choice Candidates with Executive Director of EMILY’s List, Emily Cain
Electing pro-choice candidates at every level is vital. This sentiment is one that EMILY’s List built on and one that we dive into in our interview with Executive Director of EMILY’s List, Emily Cain. This week’s episode takes a tour around the organization, its goals, and how it supports candidates. In conversation, we also chatted about Maine politics from the former elected official (teaser: she took office at just 24 y/o). Ocean Pollution 101 with Cassia Patel, Director of Programs at Oceanic Global
TBH, ‘Under The Sea’ from the Little Mermaid is stuck in our heads as we write this description, rn. For one, because it’s a great tune, and secondly, because on today’s episode we’re diving into ocean pollution. We’re joined by the amazing Cassia Patel, Director of Programs at Oceanic Global who got us up to speed and more on what ocean pollution is, its intersection across other sectors of pollution, and of course, what Oceanic Global is doing to combat it. The Race Against Madison Cawthorn with Congressional Candidate, Rev. Jasmine Beach-Ferrara
The Race Against Madison Cawthorn with Congressional Candidate, Rev. Jasmine Beach-Ferrara
Some names in politics are infamous – two of them are in the title of this episode. What they also have in common, is that they’re running for the same Congressional seat for North Carolina. District 11 to be exact. Currently held by infamous person one – Madison Cawthorn (R), the race is heating up. Yes, even in primary season (insert rant here about how vital participating in primaries is here). Infamous person two is making sure of that in her run against the Congressman, with a pragmatic approach and deep understanding of North Carolina politics. That person is Rev. Jasmine Beach-Ferrara (D). In this episode, we had the pleasure of interviewing the candidate and getting to know her and her platform. Funding Gap: State vs. Federal Races with Melissa Walker, Head of Giving Circles at The States Project
It’s far from unknown that to run a campaign in this day and age, fundraising is critical. Money, money, money, as they say is a key consideration as to whether a campaign will be successful or not. You’d think it would be based on who’s the best possible representative for a community…but alas, that’s a rant for another day. In this episode, we explore the difference between how state and federal campaigns are funded, AND importantly, how Republicans and Democrats have a very different approach to it all. To give us the good, the bad, and the ugly of the scenario, we chatted with the wonderful Melissa Walker, who is the Head of Giving Circles at The States Project. The States Project:https://statesproject.org/Novo Referral Link (For our entrepreneurs & small biz pals):https://onboarding.novo.co/signup?referral_code=SamanthaKanterJoin our Tennis Club via Break The Love:https://www.breakthelove.com/clubs/girlandthegovWinc (21+ only):https://winc.mivh.net/vn1kZWBrand Ambassador Program:https://www.girlandthegov.com/the-ambassadorsInternship Description:https://www.girlandthegov.com/careersThe Daily Episode: Ukraine Puts Putin’s Playbook to the Testhttps://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/ukraine-puts-putins-playbook-to-the-test/id1200361736?i=1000555092099Title 42 explainer epi!https://girlandthegov.buzzsprout.com/1380769/8461850-understanding-immigration-in-the-us-with-layla-razavi-deputy-executive-director-at-freedom-for-immigrants

Florida Debrief with Congressman Charlie Crist (FL-13), Fmr. Governor of FL, AND Candidate for Governor of FL
Florida has been hitting the news cycle BIG TIME these days. We wish we could say it was because they were having a puppy convention or something just as cute and insta-worthy, but unfortunately, the current Governor Ron DeSantis and his Republican state legislature have made sure that anything they do is FAR from cute. From the Don’t Say Gay bill to a 15-week abortion bill passed in the middle of the night, it’s safe to say we’ve had some questions as to what on earth is going on in FL. Cue our guest – Florida Congressman Charlie Crist (FL-13) who is running for Governor. Now before you okay, cool, can’t wait to hear from this elected and candidate’s position – we need you to get even more excited. Why? Because Congressman Crist was previously Florida’s Governor…as a Republican. A now Democrat, he brings a particularly interesting dialogue to our conversation on politics today in Florida and across the country. The data does it for us. And what we mean by that aside from the fact that we may throw that phrase on a sweatshirt at some point, is that looking at data and the studies that produce these elements of interest can provide tangible evidence for particular policy measures. In the case of studies undertaken by our guest Dr. Jody Herman, who is a Reid Rasmussen Senior Scholar of Public Policy at the Williams Institute, the findings are in the realm of gender identity and non-discrimination laws. Monopolies, Big Tech, and Ohio Politics with Morgan Harper, Candidate for US Senate, Ohio
Ohioooooo, we’re here! Okay, not physically but via Zoom with a must-learn-about candidate for US Senate - Morgan Harper. Previously, the Director of Policy & Advocacy at the American Economic Liberties Project, a former tenure of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and able to tout testifying before Congress, Morgan opened the gate on the conversation about monopolies in the 21st century. Talkin’ big tech and more, we get into the nitty gritty of ‘too big too fail,’ the dangers of mergers and acquisitions, and where the government has and can come into the equation. Build Back Better (Explained) with Brian Derrick, Political Strategist & Founder of Oath
If you’ve been scratching your head about what on earth is going on with the Build Back Better bill, this episode is going to be your bread and butter of reference points. We go IN on the bill with Brian Derrick, Political Strategist & Founder of Oath to get a grasp on what’s included in the bill, what’s not, and what the process looks like for potentially passing it. Naturally, since we love abbreviations, we also get into the confusion around BBB versus the BIF, and even define what the CBO does. And, if that also has you scratching your head, do not worry, just head to wherever you get your pods and listen in and learn what all of those fun bits and pieces are. Best yet, this episode contains tons and bunches of q’s from the audience. Shoutout to all that submitted those bad boys. As per usual, if you have a q or a topic you’d like to learn more about in politics, slide into our DMs.Limited Edition Merch (only avail. through Nov. 17): https://www.bonfire.com/store/girlandthegov/ Citizen Power with Nathalia Ramos & Ben Sheehanhttps://www.onecommune.com/a/2147492814/nBoX9mJoPrima:https://www.prima.co/ Use code GIRLGOV for 20% offhttp://chng.it/8CNwdhLT79 Prima PetitionBrand Ambassador Sign Up Form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSelH0p5KWISaHaBI5-9nKSUItlY_eXiEmvsudpJIcRjKhfgyA/viewformBrand Ambassador Info Sheet:https://drive.google.com/file/d/11WAWLwc9dShbSVxPMcUzc1d5Ua8KNdO2/view

Healthcare Finance in the US with Julie Oliver, Executive Director and Co-Founder of Ground Game Texas
Us when talking about healthcare in the US and singing our favorite Avril Lavigne throwback: “Why'd you have to go and make things so complicated?” But, seriously, healthcare in the US is no walk in the park. In fact, it’s more of a walk in a corn maze -- disorienting, confusing, and altogether spooky. To break down some of the basics, we had the honor of hosting Julie Oliver, Executive Director and Co-Founder of Ground Game Texas on this episode. Giving us the 411 on healthcare finance, citing a career in the industry and political know-how, Julie pulled back the red tape on medicare, medicaid, and everything else under the sun that has us scratching our heads. Global Gender Equality, A Status Update Via Dania Gharaibeh, Team Lead, Gender Equality at the IRC
Gender equality is a complex and nuanced topic, and discussing it at a global level is no exception from this qualification. In this episode, we begin the conversation around it, peeling back some of the many layers involved in what the status quo is at large, why in 2021 we are only so far, and how geopolitics play an important role. Joined by the amazing mind that is Dania Gharaibeh, Team Lead, Gender Equality at the IRC, we also brought clarity on terms and concepts commonly a part of the equality equation, including defining what child and forced marriages are, the differences between the two, and so much more. For this episode, we tapped Melanie D’Arrigo, Congressional Candidate (NY-3) to give us the answers to these q’s, which had us scratching our heads and trying to hit the good ol’ Google machine. WTF is Gerrymandering with Arizona State Director at All On The Line, Kendra Alvarez
If you’ve ever had a conversation with Sammy about politics, you KNOW she’s mentioned the term ‘gerrymandering.’ Thus, it’s only appropriate that we dedicated an entire episode to the term and its many siblings. Cue, our conversation with Arizona State Director at All On The Line, Kendra Alvarez, who took us past just gerrymandering to the terms beyond including ‘grid map,’ ‘packing,’ and ‘cracking.’ Terms with silly names perhaps, but ones that are set to play a big role in redistricting underway across the nation. Explainer: Asylum & Del Rio with Mirlande Joachim, Esq.
If we had a penny for every time we heard the phrase “Haitian border crisis” over the last few weeks, we’d be richer than Jeff Bezos (don’t tell him, thanks). That phrase begs many questions - is it really a crisis? Who on earth was and is responsible for what we are seeing unfold at our southern border? Is there a reason these people aren’t being granted asylum? And, what is this ambiguous Title 42 everyone keeps throwing around? We ask these questions and more in our conversation and latest episode to badass immigration lawyer, Mirlande Joachim, Esq. Shedding light on the many issues happening here and happening fast, the conversation is a starter guide for understanding what went down in Del Rio. SexEd Today in the USA with Danielle Bezalel, Host of Sex Ed with DB Podcast
The concept of sex education might bring you back to an array of incredibly awkward classes taught begrudgingly by your gym teacher. It might also conjure absolutely nothing if you’re from a state where parents can opt their children out of sex education at school. Sex education, its depth and most importantly, its accuracy varies state to state. Far from a one size fits all sitch, sex education has and continues to take on a variety pack of forms in this country and the data shows some wild trends to go along with, all of which we go into in depth with our guest, Danielle Bezalel, Host of Sex Ed with DB Podcast. A Deep Dive into the Anti-Choice Politics of Louisiana with State Representative Mandie Landry (LA, D-91)
In this episode we take a virtual road trip down to Louisiana to chat with State Representative Mandie Landry (LA, D-91) on what it’s like to be pro-choice in a heavily red (and anti-choice) state. Walking us through her experiences, her conversations with colleagues, and painting the picture as to the political landscape of the state, we learned there is much more than meets the eye when it comes to the overall topic of women’s health in the state. From maternal morbidity rates to access to sex education, and the many barriers and political pawn work done in the state (and by its geographic neighbors), the takeaways were incredibly eyeopening. WTF is a Crisis Pregnancy Center & Women’s Health with Senator Cappelletti (PA-17)
WTF is a Crisis Pregnancy Center & Women’s Health with Senator Cappelletti (PA-17)
It’s all in the branding isn’t it? That is very much the case of the concept of Crisis Pregnancy Centers, as well as that of Planned Parenthood. In our first deep dive conversation (we don’t know how it’s our first either) on women’s health and the politics surrounding it, we virtually sat down with State Senator Cappelletti (PA-17) to get into it all. Through our conversation we peeled back the branding on Crisis Pregnancy Centers, and dove into what on earth these centers do and how they’re even legal. Special Episode!! All About Juneteenth with Ms. Opal Lee, Grandmother of Juneteenth
This is a special edition of Girl and the Gov, The Podcast and it’s special not just because its a two episode week, but because we are beyond honored to share that our guest is none other than Ms. Opal Lee, the Grandmother of Juneteenth. To say that we aren’t still star struck is an understatement, but Ms. Opal Lee is one serious badass lady, counting 94 years on this planet and many in activism. Her focus, as one may guess from her moniker, is to have Juneteenth recognized in law as a federal holiday. Her work, which we discussed, is no short of amazing, and we were blown away to learn that it came to fruition moments before this exact interview, with the Senate passing the legislation unanimously. You won’t want to miss this important discussion and the joy we shared during this momentous occasion. P.S. Corporate Interests & California Politics Unveiled with Founder of Project Super Bloom, Eric Warmoth
We’re surfing over to California for this episode, where we speak with the founder of Project Super Bloom, Eric Warmoth about the smoke and mirrors politics going on in the Golden State. To the surprise of many, politics in California at the state level isn’t what it seems to be from afar -- blue. Due to the ability for corporations to donate directly to political campaigns, the ways in which politics work in the state are a whole different beast than you may think. In our conversation, we get the TEA on this and what Project Super Bloom aims to do to change the status quo.P.S. The Constitution Explained with Ben Sheehan, Author of OMG WTF DOES THE CONSTITUTION ACTUALLY SAY?
Have you ever thought to yourself WTF is actually inside the Constitution? Have you ever thought, but like where’s the Bill of Rights at? If either of these two questions have ever popped into your head, this episode is for you. We had the privilege of chatting with Ben Sheehan, Author of OMG WTF DOES THE CONSTITUTION ACTUALLY SAY?, on these two questions and more -- like those pesky amendments, how they’re ratified, and what ratifying even means in the first place. Humor is top of mind in this episode (which makes sense given Ben’s experience as an award-winning producer at Funny or Die), with at least one of us attempting to use an olde English accent. Social Media Meets Politics With Dr. Desmond U. Patton, Associate Professor of Social Work at Columbia University
Here we are on social media, using good ol’ technology to get the scoop and be in the loop. A concept that touches the good, the bad, and the ugly, social media has many uses and capabilities. It houses interactions, patterns, and varied forms of linguistics. Each of these elements carries itself into the realm of politics and it’s one that we dove into with Dr. Desmond U. Patton, Associate Professor of Social Work at Columbia University. In our conversation, and latest episode, we peeled back some of the many layers of the social media dilemma as it relates to politics, race, and communication in the 21st century. Through this dialogue, light is shed on both Dr. Patton’s work at the intersection of technology, social work, and politics, as well as its relation to current events, like the January 6 insurrection. Candidate Spotlight with Holly McCormack! Candidate and challenger to Majorie Taylor Greene for Congress (GA-14)
It seems like we’ve had a lot of people dubbed “thou who shall not be named” in the last few years, and honestly many for good reason. One such person, represents GA-14 in Congress and has pushed out conspiracy theories galore. Do you need another hint? Okay, she also recently challenged AOC to a debate. If you’ve connected the dots, welcome to the party and welcome to the episode where we interview one of her challengers -- Holly McCormack who is a Democrat running to take her seat. We had the honor of virtually sitting down with Holly to learn about her campaign, why she’s running, and why this race and district are so important. The conversation around immigration in the US is often met with controversial opinions, buzz words, and horrendous campaign slogans. Healthcare in a COVID-19 World with Vice Admiral (Ret.) Rocky Bono, MD
Military healthcare in the United States is more complicated than a love triangle on the Bachelor. It’s layered, it’s nuanced, and it takes a true expert in chaos and crisis to shed light on how healthcare and the military intersect. Cue, Vice Admiral (Ret.) Dr. Rocky Bono, MD, the first woman surgeon in the military to hold the rank of Vice Admiral, the first female three-star admiral in the medical field in the history of the U.S. Navy, as well as the first Asian-American woman promoted to Vice Admiral. In our conversation this week, the former CEO and director of the Defense Health Agency (DHA) provided us the ins-and-the-outs of how this system works, and how she worked to streamline healthcare across the branches of the U.S. military. Dr. Bono also gave pause to her work on WA Governor Jay Inslee’s COVID-19 Response Team, sharing details on and illuminating the behind-the-scenes work done by states during the early days of the pandemic. Through our conversation, Nathalia who wears many hats, including a role as a content producer for think tank, the Berggruen Institute and as the Founder of Whole Bunch Media, we learned what’s in the bill, why it’s important, and its future in the Senate. Helping us do so, our amazing guest, Abdul Henderson, who is both the former Executive Director of the Congressional Black Caucus, the former Director of International Affairs at the Department of Veterans Affairs, a former Chief of Staff and so much more, enlisted his vast experience to help us understand these critical government institutions and organizations. In our conversation, we define caucuses at their base and work our way up to the magic of the Congressional Black Caucus itself. We also, and importantly, dive into the operations of the Department of Veterans Affairs, peeling back what often seems like many mysterious layers, to get an understanding of what the department does and how it achieves its policy goals. The 411 on Voter Suppression with Brandon Upson, Founder of Amplify Action
It’s Wednesday and you know what that means? An amazing episode with a very special guest - Brandon Upson, Founder of Amplify Action. We had the honor of chatting with this Tom Steyer campaign alum (he was the National Organizing Director) and civic engagement genius who shared with us the innovative techniques his organization is bringing to the South to get out the vote. We’ll give you one hint before we tell you to just hit play already - restaurants aren’t the only ones using QR codes these days. We also hit all of the important ‘stupid’ questions, outlining what voter suppression is (and its backstory), voter disenfranchisement, voter purges, and more. We’ll leave it at this - this episode is a can’t miss.SHOP:https://soulnation.com/10% off your purchase with code GIRLANDTHEGOVENGAGE:https://www.ampourvote.com/https://www.patreon.com/m/5628126/posts

Photo I.D. Access and Voter I.D. Laws with Kat Calvin, Co-Founder & CEO of Project ID Action Fund
First, let us apologize for opening this episode talking about hot dogs… BUT beep, beep absolute icon coming through! That’s right this episode we were honored to speak with Kat Calvin, Co-Founder & CEO of Project ID Action Fund (and Founder and Executive Director of Spread The Vote), who, through her incredible work, has been honored as a TIME Magazine 16 People and Groups Fighting for a More Equal America, a 2018 Fast Company 100 Most Creative People in Business, and has been a Business Insider 30 Under 30. This lawyer, activist, and full-time badass spent the episode cracking us up and informing us on an issue we admit, we knew very little about. That issue? Identification politics and policy. When we say identification politics, we don’t mean the concept of selecting a party or opinion based on one’s background, we mean the politics of living in the United States with or without formal, government identification. Complex and nuanced, this topic and its relation to the mission set forth by Project ID Action Fund take center stage.P.S. Kat is also the co-host of an amazing podcast as well - Vote! The Podcast. Check it out as they gear up for season 2. Links:https://www.katcalvin.com/https://vote-the-podcast.simplecast.com/https://www.patreon.com/m/5628126/posts

Police Reform & Ranked Choice Voting with Candidate for NYC Mayor, Dianne Morales
Police Reform & Ranked Choice Voting with Candidate for NYC Mayor, Dianne Morales
Sammy loves to call this change to the ‘voting machine’ the political version of the sorority rush. It’s called Ranked Choice Voting and when you hear how it works, she’s pretty sure you’ll agree (Maddie has rolled her eyes about ten times at this description, but is going along with it.) Either way, this episode dives into what it is and how it works with a candidate whose very race will be using Ranked Choice Voting. That candidate is Dianne Morales who is running for NYC Mayor. Providing the landscape on this change, as well as criminal justice reform on a local and national level, this episode is filled with need-to-know info and important convos.P.S. Dianne has the best TikTok in town. Check it out. We’re obsessed. Biden Harris Inauguration, Public Higher Education, Sex Work & more with Elisa Crespo Candidate for NYC Council District 15
Good morning sunshines, it’s INAUGURATION DAY! It’s been a journey, but here we are. Like literally, mama we made it. We’re amped to usher this day and new administration in, but we’re also amped about the elections that are still going on. Yep - that’s right, 2021 has elections too. At the top of the list is the special election for NYC Council District 15 (Bronx), for which Elisa Crespo is a candidate. We had the honor of chatting with Elisa about this special election, the concept as a whole, and her platform. Of course, we dove deep into other topics as well, covering public higher education, sex work and its legalization, in addition to healthcare. Listen-in and get up to speed on these issues and Elisa’s platform ahead of the March 23 race date.Links:https://www.instagram.com/elisacresponyc/https://www.elisacrespo.com/http://www.honeydewmepodcast.com/

The Capitol Insurrection, Affordable Housing, & Food Security with Emerita Torres, State Committee-85 AD
The Capitol Insurrection, Affordable Housing, & Food Security with Emerita Torres, State Committee-85 AD
Before we dive into the pertinent topics of affordable housing and food security, we had to weigh in on the insane week we've had after the insurrection on our nation's capitol. We break down what happened on that grim day, call out Republican hypocrisy and petty B.S., and explain what has been happening since with the unprecedented calls for impeachment, expulsions, and the 25th amendment. But we digress because we love a good stupid question, and let us tell you our guest Emerita Torres, State Committee-85 AD had to field quite a few from us. We covered what a State Committee is - different from a legislative committee BTW, how it works, and what it does. Then, we sat there in awe. After we got it together, we talked through even more important topics like affordable housing and food security. We learned a lot and can’t wait for you all to learn more too. LGBTQA+ Policy, Healthcare, and Activism with Representative Brianna Titone, CO-HD27
We’re here in 2021 and we’re here with one super amazing guest that we can’t wait for you all to meet. For our very first episode of the year, we ‘sat’ down (okay we recorded virtually, whatever) with Representative Brianna Titone, CO-HD27 who is not only a badass woman in politics but the first openly transgender state legislator elected in Colorado and the 4th elected in the United States. Accomplished, to say the least, Brianna educated us (and now you) on LGBTQA+ related policy as a whole in the United States, as well as in Colorado. Through our conversation, we touch on healthcare and activism, along with laws (hello policy) that are making positive change. P.S. We also chatted through Maddie’s new crush. We’ll give you a hint, he lives in Georgia. Links:https://www.briannaforco.com/https://www.instagram.com/briannaforcolorado/

How to Talk Politics with Your Family with Melissa Pennica, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist
How to Talk Politics with Your Family with Melissa Pennica, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist
Toodles to taboos, specifically the taboo that is having conversations with friends and family about politics. Often a touchy subject, and amongst those (heyy, the religion you’re in the mix too!), that lights a match to many a fire when it comes to conversations around the dinner table, politics has a reputation for sowing division. But what if it's just the way we’ve always approached these conversations? Could it be that we’ve been dipping into the wrong toolbox to operate these conversations productively? We explore this topic on this very special episode with Melissa Pennica, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Senior Therapist, and Clinical Supervisor, who helps us (and now you) understand how to navigate political conversations with everyone and their crazy uncle. A must listen to before you sled into the holiday or zoom there in style, this episode will give you the tools you need to create unity and renew connection on a topic that should no longer be taboo. What is a PAC?! with Mom’s in Office Founder Simona Grace
We solve so many mysteries at Girl and the Gov, The Podcast that might start calling ourselves the Nancy Drew crew. This week we brought our eye for investigation and unveiling the mysteries at the very core of politics today, by exploring what a PAC (Political Action Committee) is. Not just a fun abbreviation, a PAC has some serious sway in politics today. Because let’s be real, it's about the money honey. So, we brought on an expert in the field, the Founder of Moms in Office, a PAC that supports and funds mom’s running for office, Simona Grace. Sharing the back story on what a PAC is and how they operate, as well as shedding light on common q’s around the concept of ‘dark money,’ Simona gave us the full rundown. State Gov & Accountability in Politics with NYS Senator Alessandra Biaggi
State Gov & Accountability in Politics with NYS Senator Alessandra Biaggi
Let’s set the scene. You’re back in middle school and your friend Karen gets caught cheating on the social studies test (classic, Karen). What happens? The teacher, principal, and perhaps even Karen’s parents, hold Karen accountable for her actions and she is given an F on the test. Ouch. The process seems seamless though, right? An action associated with a result. That’s accountability. So how does this work in the political realm? Does it? And if it does work, how is accountability operated? We’ll give you a little hint - committees are a part of this puzzle. We discussed accountability at length with NYS Senator Alessandra Biaggi, as well as defined terms within the conversation such as committees. Wtf is the Electoral College?! with Emily Conrad, Author of "The Faithless?: The Untold Story of the Electoral College"
Every four years two words are uttered more than Kanye says “I love Kanye” on a daily basis. Those two words are ‘Electoral College.’ Okay, excuse us, two words doesn’t quite capture this correctly - this TERM is mentioned ad nauseam every four years. Regardless of the syntax, does anyone know what the Electoral College is? Bueller, Bueller. Yea didn’t think so, despite it having a leading role in Presidential elections. Cue, Emily Conrad, Author of 'The Faithless? The Untold Story of the Electoral College' who joined us to define the term and get to know how it works. Electing Women & 2020 Election "Firsts" with Eleanor's Legacy President Brette McSweeney
Electing Women & 2020 Election "Firsts" with Eleanor's Legacy President Brette McSweeney
If there’s one word that describes this past election, it’s chaos. Seriously, it seems as though there’s a new avenue or news update to unpack just about every 30 seconds. What’s perhaps most frustrating about this -- outside of the amount of screen time our Iphones are mocking us for -- is that election firsts aren’t getting their moment in the spotlight. From the election of Cori Bush (MO) to Sarah McBride (DE), there’s much to celebrate and, dare we say unpack in a positive light? So, we did just that with President of Eleanor's Legacy, Brette McSweeney. We chatted ‘firsts,’ and their relation to the mission of Eleanor’s Legacy, and then, even dove into the classic confusion that are ‘political endorsements.’ We covered a lot in this can’t miss, must-download, rate, review, and subscribe-worthy episode.
