*REPLAY* Episode #13 - Zebras Do Exist with Brandy Goodman. Living with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome.
Brandy Champagne is an extraordinary person who has Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, Autism, and ADHD who has been disabled for a good portion of their life. A common issue for disabled people is that they rely on others to provide their food and dietary needs. After experiencing a breakthrough when adopting a plant-based diet it inspired them to learn how to safely and simply get back into the kitchen and create an opportunity to be involved in their own care.
Brandy is currently writing a book that will share how they did that to inspire and teach other disabled people how to ease their way back into the kitchen and prepare nutritious food full of benefits to the body and mind.
This episode is titled Zebras do exist because a common theme in medical school for doctors was that if you hear hoofbeats expect to see a horse, not a zebra. Meaning your first investigation should be for a common issue, not an obscure disease. However, that philosophy has led to people with chronic illnesses having to prove that all the common, obvious reasons are not the culprit through a process of elimination.
Brandy was born with this rare disease but was not diagnosed until she was almost an adult and many women are not diagnosed until they start trying to get pregnant. EDS is a painful, life-disrupting illness where many of the body's tissues do not grow correctly resulting in very loose joints, ligaments, organ failure, bruising, and loss of motor function.
Their doctor told them that if they went vegetarian or vegan they would die. Later in life, feeling they were on their way to an early death anyway, a PETA video inspired them to adopt a compassionate plant-based lifestyle. Surprisingly, rather than languishing or deteriorating, Brandy started to get better...MUCH better.
Today, Brandy loves to be outdoors and can easily crush a 7km hike on the weekends with her fabulous partner and furry companion.

Episode #54 - A Body Worth Defending with Ed Cohen
Today's guest is an extraordinary thought leader with a heart and spirit brimming with empathy and enthusiasm. Dr. Ed Cohen shares how his thoughts and philosophies around healing have evolved over his fifty years of living with Chrohn's Disease. He brings up an amazing point, that immunity was a word that first meant "free from" in the legal world. Then over time, the world of medicine and science labeled our internal defense mechanisms as the immune system. But if we are free from threats, as immunity implies, why must we have an entire immune defense system? This is a great question he poses and answers in this episode.
Dr. Ed Cohen is a Ph.D. in Modern Thought from Stanford and for the last three decades he has been an award-winning professor of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality at Rutgers University. At thirteen, he was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease—a chronic, incurable condition that nearly killed him in his early twenties. At his diagnosis, his doctors told him that the best he could hope for would be periods of remission. Unfortunately, doctors never mentioned healing as a possibility.
In his book On Learning to Heal, Cohen draws on fifty years of living with Crohn’s to consider how Western medicine’s turn from an “art of healing” toward a “science of medicine” deeply affects both medical practitioners and their patients. He demonstrates that although medicine can now offer many seemingly miraculous therapies, medicine is not and has never been the only way to enhance healing. Exploring his own path to healing, he argues that learning to heal requires us to desire and value healing as a vital possibility. With this book, Cohen advocates reviving healing’s role for all those whose lives are touched by illness.

Episode #44 - The Highly Sensitive Man with William Allen
Our guest today helps men understand their gifts of sensitivity from a masculine perspective. He shares that men should see sensitivity as more than emotion, to look at this gift as being like a highly-tuned instrument that is taking accurate measurements of the environment around it. 20-30% of the population is highly sensitive and for great benefit to the human race, which he will also shed light on
William Allen is a first-time author with a writer’s heart and researcher’s mind. After getting a degree in Psychology with an eye on doing psychology research, he recalibrated for a career in Information Technology. He found himself in a thirty-year career as an Information Technology manager at Wells Fargo who enjoyed managing highly intelligent, often difficult staff, many of whom were highly sensitive. He was awarded a prestigious Corporate Management Excellence award for his empathetic management style.
He retired early from his corporate job to found his Hypno-coaching and neurofeedback brain training business, BrainPilots, in Bend, Oregon. While in Bend, he co-organized the area’s first Introvert/Highly Sensitive Person discussion group. In late 2016, he began his blog, The Sensitive Man, about his experiences, as a highly sensitive man. The blog became the genesis of his book, Confessions of a Sensitive Man. He feels that HSP males need to take their keen insights and intuition and make them public. He would like to shed more light on highly sensitive males and the much-needed role they need to take in our society.

Episode #43 - Hashimoto's, Horticulture and the Human Spirit with Justin McSweeney
Today's episode has a lot of content packed in with guest Justin McSweeney who hosts his own YouTube interview channel called Idea Cast. This series platforms persons from the social sciences, philosophy, the media arts as well as the musical arts. Justin seeks out conversations that revolve around meaning-making, sense-making, creative thinking, and examination of our potential and challenges.
Justin connected with me as he has Hashimoto's Disease, which is the same autoimmune disease I have, and wanted to share a bit of his experience with this. His diagnosis story is very interesting as well as how he tackled brain fog using his love of botany and horticulture as a source of mental exercise. However, this is closer to the end of the episode as Justin is very philosophical and a free thinker that touches on many topics that I know will be of benefit to you the listener.
In his words "I might identify as a philosophical hobbyist. I am interested in the philosophy of mind and ontology. At present, I enjoy process relational metaphysics and analytical idealism as curious systems to help decode ontological foundations. I am also interested in what I call the 'will to spirit'. It is humanity's drive to seek the transcendent as a means to relate to the ordinary".

Episode #41 - Motivational Check with Terry Tucker
When Terry Tucker's name comes to mind, the word motivational pops up immediately. Not only has Terry reinvented himself on a professional and personal level many times over his life he has also had to fight for his life against a rare form of cancer called Acral Lentiginous Melanoma, and continues to do so today.
Terry shares in his bio, "One thing I learned during all my pain and discomfort is that you have two choices. You can succumb to the debilitating distress and misery, or you can learn to embrace it and use it to make you a stronger and more resilient human being. I chose the latter. Make no mistake, there were times I felt so poorly and was in so much agony that I prayed to die. Each day was a struggle to use my mind to override my body's apathy and distress. I realize pain and discomfort can beat you to your knees and keep you there if you let it. But I also came to appreciate that I could use my hurting and anguish to harden my mind and make me more resolute. I was no better at dealing with pain and discomfort than the next person. But every day, I found a way to survive, with the knowledge that I would need to do it again the following morning."
His driving passion is sharing what he has learned between his decade battle with cancer and his diverse professional background to encourage and support anyone his words touch to know that they are not alone, no matter what they are struggling against. Through this trial of fire, Terry has come to live by the Four Truths and Ten Values of Sustainable Excellence which he shares in this episode, on his website, and throughout his book Sustainable Excellence, Ten Principles to Leading Your Uncommon and Extraordinary Life.

I am still struggling with speech (slurring) and motor skills (typing and reading) I'm getting left and right mixed up a little. But another few days and I will be back to normal!
I hope you will take any person with COVID who is struggling with anxiety or panic seriously, it could save their life.

Episode #30 - Hypnobabies and Healing Births with Kerry Tuschoff
Founder and Director of Hypnobabies Childbirth Hypnosis, Kerry Tuschhoff is a nationally renowned speaker and writer on a wide range of pregnancy and childbirth concerns. Her subjects include fertility, prenatal and childbirth choices, informed consent issues, health and low-risk status concerns, comfort in childbirth, the power of birth language and midwifery advocacy. As a childbirth educator since 1989, a doula and hypnotherapist, Kerry has developed many educational programs for pregnant people, birthers, medical and childbirth professionals and hypnotherapists. These efforts have become immensely popular and have started a chain-reaction of interest to change the way we give birth, how newborns are cared for, and the way natural childbirth is perceived by the general public as well as the medical community. Kerry created a very comprehensive childbirth program of her own; Hypnobabies Childbirth Education. This unique program has trained hundreds of thousands of students to use medical-grade hypnosis techniques and give birth in a much easier and more comfortable way.
Hypnobabies is a very successful 6 week complete childbirth education course that was adapted with permission from Master Hypnotherapist Gerald Kein’s “Painless Childbirth Program” techniques (medical grade, somnambulistic hypnosis). This allows our Hypnobabies students to enjoy “eyes-open childbirth hypnosis”, easily remaining deeply in hypnosis while walking, talking and changing positions; being as mobile as they would like to be during childbirth. Hypnobabies is well-known for helping people create much shorter, easier and more comfortable births, helping to make childbirth the joyful experience it was meant to be

Episode #29 - Discovering Your Identity with Urmi Hossain
Joining me today is the author of the book Discovering Your Identity: A Rebirth from Interracial Struggle to discuss their own struggle with identity as a Bengali woman born and raised in Italy and now living in Montreal, Canada. Urmi shares openly about the back and forth between preserving heritage and culture while still embracing our individual character and lifestyle choices. We also talk about the difficulty in finding the right career and facing rejection while seeking new roles or fresh starts in life.
Urmi was blessed in life to have mentors that became such amazing friends she now calls them "friend-tors". Their positive impact inspired her to write her story and create a community where other women that struggle with identity or a sense of belonging can come together to find themselves and find their own friend-tors.
Urmi Hossain is a full-time female worker in the financial services industry. She has been working in this industry for about six years and she comes from an educational background in Finance. She is currently pursuing her CFA designation. In her free time, she volunteers for causes such as women's empowerment and giving back to the non-privileged. She is a big proponent of self-investing and continuous learning. Ambitious and Go-Getter are the two words that describe her the most. Episode #28 - Love at Work with Christina Foxwell of Ignite Purpose
Joining me today is Christina Foxwell, the Managing Director of Ignite Purpose in Australia. Christina shares openly her story of transformation as a leader from the persona of "ninja-barbie" a hard-working, successful manager that was also cold and adept at obliterating those in her way, to a leader that builds a foundation of compassion and love. Her message is we are better together.
In fact, a 2021 Ernst and Young Study showed that 88% of workers cited empathy from their leaders as their main motivation in remaining loyal and boosting their performance in their companies.
Christina teaches organizations all over the world how to flourish with love-focused leadership rather than fear-driven management. If your team goals are solely measured through productivity, dotting all the i's and crossing all the t's, you may have created a culture of fear that will only lead to short-term results and high turnover.
This episode shares how leaders can evolve using her three-step process that is revolutionizing the business and corporate world. She also shares how those that are employees at work can influence their work environments to become more compassionate and trust-centered.
If you have struggled with corporate politics, water-cooler cultures, or even toxic, demoralizing workplaces this episode is for you. Christina is a beacon of empathy, love, and kindness in addition to being very wise and strong. I know I am a better person for the time I have spent with Christina and believe you will be impacted positively too.
Christina is passionate about understanding people, helping them grow in their own lives and being more effective in the impact they leave on others. She is a coach, a leader, a business owner, an author, a speaker, and mostly a mother, wife, daughter, and friend.
Her new book The Glass Angel is being released this fall, follow her on LinkedIn to receive an invitation to her virtual book launch https://www.linkedin.com/in/christinafoxwell

Episode #27 - Finding God at Her Garage Sale: Life After Narcissm with Dr. Marni Hill Foderaro
Dr. Marni shares her story of recovery and healing after experiencing abuse from her narcissistic former spouse which resulted in her losing everything - her marriage, friends, support, finances, her home, and eventually her relationship with her adult children. While she knew she needed to be free from her abuser, the unraveling and aftermath were traumatic themselves. Narcissists have a way of manipulating and positioning themselves as the victim and influencing those nearest and dearest to us to start to believe their false narratives.
During these dark and isolating days, Marni found her faith and spirituality, which led to her healing and recovery journey, at an unexpected time - her garage sale! This sparked the idea for her book, a collection of stories called God Came to My Garage Sale and her healing inspired her set of books titled "True Deceit False Love" that help people recover from family trauma, parental alienation, abuse, and narcissism.
Dr. Marni Hill Foderaro is an award-winning and celebrated author, speaker, and educator. She earned her doctorate in education from Northern Illinois University and completed postdoctoral studies at Harvard during a very successful and rewarding 35-year career as a high school special education teacher, with 12 years as a university graduate school adjunct professor.
Marni is a lover of animals, nature, music, and world travel. She values honesty, integrity, equality, and goodness and prays for peace on earth. She was born in the South, raised her children in the Midwest, and made the Caribbean her home.

Episode #26 - Surviving the Typical World as a Non-Typical
This episode is largely focused on surviving a work type of environment but also touches on ADHD, hyper-sensitivity and trauma-induced empathy which all have common traits associated with them.
Just because you are sensitive doesn't mean you are at fault when you are hurt. When we feel vulnerable rather than people seeing us as easy targets wouldn't it be nice if they thought of us as having a baby on board sign and take extra care around us to nurture and protect? This episode will talk about ways you can say you have a "baby on board" in a way that typicals in your life can relate to and understand how to best support you.
Please check out our Journey Program, intake is open now for September. This is an incredible opportunity to learn all the skills you need to be the hero of your own story. Episode #25 - Under My Skin, My Journey With HS with Ayla Horton
Joining the podcast today is my friend Ayla Horton, who was recently diagnosed with Hidradenitis suppurative (HS). HS is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects your skin throughout your body - both on the surface and inside the deep layers of the skin.
It is painful and can be obvious to the human eye which can contribute to self-consciousness and embarrassment. Plus, as it is a rare condition, often medical advice is misaligned and sometimes hurtful. Ayla was told she should try "showering more" by the first doctor she shared the issue with.
Thankfully Ayla did not allow that doctor to be the final word and continued a journey of learning and advocating for herself to get to the bottom of her disease. Now Ayla is on the road to recovery, she is optimistic and feels heard.
Her story will inspire you to speak up for yourself, filter unhelpful advice or information, and most importantly be kind to yourself. Ayla is one of my favourite people in this world and I really hope you find this talk informative and enlightening.
If you suffer from unusual symptoms and aren't sure who to go to to get the best guidance or just need a safe space to start the conversation about what is happening with your body or mind please reach out to me anytime chrissy@girlwithaflare.com.
