GCP Short: THG’s Guernsey captive formation and evolution

This GCP Short, produced in partnership with We Are Guernsey and the Guernsey International Insurance Association (GIIA), shares another story of a new captive owner and the rationale behind its risk financing strategy.

Joshua Cryer, Director of Risk and Insurance at THG, a fast growing UK plc, tells us about THG, why a captive became a relevant option for the group two years ago, how they went about forming the captive and how he hopes to utilise it in the future.

Alex Symons, associate director at Aon Insurance Managers in Guernsey, provides the captive manager perspective on formation and utilisation, and explains why Guernsey is home to so many UK Plc-owned captives.

There is also a good discussion on governance and the value of non-executive directors.

GCP Short: What is a Lloyd's Captive Syndicate and how will it work?

GCP Short: What is a Lloyd's Captive Syndicate and how will it work?

In this GCP Short we provide a bit more context and detail on what the much mooted Lloyd’s Captive Syndicate is, how it will work and what kinds of companies it might be suitable for.

In April, Captive Intelligence reported that the historic insurance marketplace is working with an applicant that could establish the first Captive Syndicate in Lloyd’s in more than 20 years.

Richard is joined by two professionals that know Lloyd’s and the business of launching and managing syndicates like the back of their hand.

Keith Nevett is Head of Business Development at managing agent Asta, which is part of the Davies Group, and Bob Stevenson, a Consultant with Asta.

Whittington, the precursor to Asta, was in fact the managing agent for those three original captive syndicates in the 1990s.

Bob worked for Lloyd’s from 2005 to 2017, and prior to that he was buyer of reinsurance at several large multinational insurers.

Keith and Bob demystify much of how Lloyd’s operates, what the benefits of a Captive Syndicate may be and how it is managed, and the different ways they can see a Lloyd’s Captive can fit into and complement a multi-captive strategy.

Kevin and Aaron discuss some of the highlights on the 2023 agenda, including the content and activities particularly relevant for the large cohort of new captives formed in the domiciles over the past three years and a renewed effort to attract and engage the next generation of captive leaders.

In episode 86 of the Global Captive Podcast, supported by the EY Global Captive Network, Richard sits down with Stacy Apter, vice president and corporate treasurer at the Coca-Cola Company, while visiting Atlanta, Geogia for RISKWORLD.

GCP Short: Is the 831(b) tax election still valid for captive insurers?

This GCP Short, produced in partnership with EY, has been recorded in response to the publication of new Internal Revenue Service proposals concerning captives making the 831(b) tax election.

Captive Intelligence published a long read on Friday, 21 April with reaction from across the industry to the proposed regs which sets out definitions that would designate some, potentially many, micro-captives as ‘listed transactions’, and others as 'transactions of interest'.

In this 18 minute discussion, Richard is joined by EY partners and captive leaders Paul Phillips and Mikhail Raybshteyn who give their view on the situation as it stands, and what the proposed regulations will really mean in practice for captive owners, service providers and the wider industry.

GCP Short: The value of outside board directors

This GCP Short, produced in partnership with Zurich Insurance, is all about the value and selection of outside directors for captive insurance company boards.

Friend of the Podcast Paul Wöhrmann, Head of Captives Services at Zurich, has brought together five expert speakers on this topic, three of which are already independent directors of captive boards.

Over the course of 25 minutes listeners will hear from Andrew Bradley, Malcolm Cutts-Watson and Francoise Carli, who have all had careers packed full with captive experience, and sit on captive boards today.

We are also joined by Xavier Groffils, the manager of the Luxembourg captive owned by Belgian chemicals company Solvay, and Hans-Peter Wagenhöfer, director of insurance and reinsurance at German multinational BASF.

Our expert panel discuss definition of outside and independent directors, how they are viewed in different jurisdictions around Europe and the value they bring to a captive board. Malcolm begins by outlining what he believes are the key responsibilities of a captive board and outside directors.

GCP #76: Enel Insurance, the first captive signatory of the UN's Principles for Sustainable Insurance

In episode 76 of the Global Captive Podcast, supported by legacy specialists R&Q, Richard is joined by three of the professionals instrumental in the first captive insurance signatory of the United Nations' Principles for Sustainable Insurance (PSI).

Earlier this year Enel Insurance, the Netherlands-domiciled captive owned by Italian energy multinational Enel, became the first captive to sign up to the PSI.

In a 25 minute discussion recorded at the European Captive Forum in Luxembourg, in November, listeners will hear from Antonio Nervini, Head of Insurance in the Netherlands at Enel, Butch Bacani, Programme Leader for the UN’s Principles for Sustainable Insurance, and Ciaran Healy, Chief Commercial Officer for EMEA at Aon Global Risk Consulting.

Now Enel has a long track record of embracing and investing in renewable and sustainable energy practices, including being the first to design and install smart meters in 2001, and the first private company in the renewable power sector to be listed on the Dow Jones Sustainability Index. And this step by the captive to sign up to the PSI is a good reflection of a group-wide approach to meeting sustainability and ESG targets.

Antonio will explain why Enel wanted to be the first captive to become a signatory of the PSI, Ciaran explains the work involved and whether he expects other captives to follow suit, but Butch begins provides some background on the PSI and his own ambitions for the captive market.
