Vicki Zoradi is an individual well-acquainted with suffering. On her 60th birthday, this veteran elementary teacher was diagnosed with a large kidney stone that caused her body to go into severe septic shock. Miraculously, she survived, but as a result of low heart rate and poor circulation, she lost the use of both arms and feet, becoming a quadrilateral amputee. In the face of this trauma, Vicki has emerged as an overcomer, and she gives all the glory and credit for her recovery to the Lord and is committed to serving Him. Charles Bungert holds the Guinness World Record for “Heaviest person to complete a marathon (male).” Soon after he completed his very first marathon in 2012, Charles’ mom was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer and given 8-14 months to live. Charles made the decision then to enter a second marathon and officially challenge the Guinness World Record in effort to inspire his mom to fight for what seemed impossible. In 2013, Charles succeeded in accomplishing his goal of winning the Guinness World Record and proving to the world that the opinions of others do not determine capacity for greatness.

After being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in February 2018, Isabel Hernandez began struggling with her invisible illness. She found that the secrecy surrounding having MS was almost as burdensome as having the disease. She has now found freedom in telling others and has become an advocate for others who are still living with an invisible illness. An amazing story of overcoming and breaking the silence around painful diseases!

Jacob has a younger brother with cerebral palsy, so managing and teaching at an art studio and gallery for artists with disabilities, is right at home for him. Jacob manages the gallery-studio, curates the art openings and teaches classes in basic drawing, landscape painting, abstract painting, color theory, and the principles and elements of art.

James grew up in Maryland and moved to California just after college. He has been always invested in his community and it’s growth. Jerry Howard has been an attorney for 20 years and shares some timely, wise words

Through a combination of volunteer opportunities, social activities, workshops, free direct assistance, and referral services Community Partners in Caring support the well-being, safety, dignity, independence as well as the physical, emotional, and mental health of seniors (age 62+) and the mildly disabled throughout our county. Jill Roberts currently serves in Santa Barbara as a recruiter of volunteers to meet the needs of Santa Barbara County seniors, especially those that have little to no family assistance. She has been a volunteer within many organizations throughout her life.  Jill’s young parents never held her back, and always did everything to advocate for her education despite her mild Cerebral Palsy diagnosis at age two. A true Lompocian, born and raised – Letty Santiago has 13 years of experience working with non-profit and government agencies as well as medical facilities.  Using her background in outreach, customer service, and administration, she oversees and coordinates services for Seniors by recruiting, interviewing and training volunteers.  She networks with the community and collaborates with different groups and organizations to try and strengthen CPC to its full potential.

Joe Pasternack went to Indiana University so he could learn from legendary Coach Bobby Knight. One thing led to another, and Head Coach Pasternack has now led UCSB to three straight 20-win seasons for the first time in school history!

A Pastor’s Heart…A Conversation with the Loving Jon Ireland.

José joined a L.A. street gang when he was sixteen and was convicted and sentenced to five years in prison at the age of eighteen. When he paroled from prison, he vowed to himself that he would never go back and dreamed of one day telling the stories of his peers. At the age of 31 and on the brink of taking his own life, he was able to remember a simple truth that he had believed as a child - that he as a person had inherent value, therefore his story had value. It was in that moment that he was able to find the value in his story once again. Jose is the founder and lead creative of We Are All One Story. He currently travels the country listening to and sharing peoples stories.

JS Shelton is a man on a mission to directly confront sexual sin in the Christian church today. He does so with the belief God is using him to grab hold of those heading toward a slaughter. Kaylie is the Transitional Age Youth Program’s Director for the Youth and Family Services branch of the Channel Island YMCA. There she helps connect youth in need of a safe place to stay with services and counseling. One of the programs she helps run is Noah’s Anchorage, a licensed eight-bed runaway and homeless shelter for youth age 12-17. An amazing story from a woman who loves youth and wants to see them are and flourishing!

Kirsten Moore lost her husband, gave birth to their first child 7 weeks later, and persevered to lead her Westmont College women’s basketball team to their first ever national championship. The scripture about being strong and courageous, along with a verse about God taking care of the fatherless and widows...she found those on post-it notes on the wall of her late husband’s office.  Strong and courageous. Those words pretty well describe Kirsten Moore.

Mari Hernandez’s world turned upside down on May 15, 2018, when she discovered her son, Andrew, had taken his own life. Known as the “Big Friendly Giant” by his friends, Andrew was just weeks away from graduating Santa Barbara High School. As a social worker, Hernandez understood that oftentimes those who take their lives appear happy on the outside, but she didn’t realize her son was struggling under the surface. Though she’s dreamed of starting a nonprofit for over 20 years, the idea for the Vida Center was born three days after Andrew’s death. During his third combat deployment, he was critically injured from an IED blast and received a Purple Heart for his actions in combat. During his recovery, he discovered the sport of Para Ice Hockey. He went on to win a gold medal in the 2018 Paralympic games in Pyeongchang, South Korea. Ralph is the captain for the Colorado Warrior Avalanche, a co-founder of We Are All One Story and is currently training for the 2022 Paralympic games in Beijing, China.
