Just Passing Through #035: Greater New Orleans Roads Talk, Part III

The history of the roads, bridges, and waterways of southeastern Louisiana and the Greater New Orleans region is a fascinating topic that doesn't generally get a lot of air time within the roads/travel enthusiast community. In this three-part podcast series, Dan sat down with Jason Hoffman of the YouTube channel "504RoadTrips" for a lengthy conversation about southeastern Louisiana and its many road-related highlights.

In Part 3 of this series, we talked about a variety of subjects, including more unrealized road-related projects around Greater New Orleans, plus a couple noteworthy drives to places such as Grand Isle and "The End of the World".

Former California State Route 1 over Old Pedro Mountain and Montara Mountain

Former California State Route 1 over Old Pedro Mountain and Montara Mountain

Prior to November 1937 California State Route 1 was carried over Montara Mountain via Old Pedro Mountain Road by way of the 922 foot high Saddle Pass.  Old Pedro Mountain Road itself was opened by San Mateo County as Coastline Highway in 1915 as a replacement for the Half Moon Bay-Colma.  Old Pedro Mountain Road was one of first asphalted highways in California but despite it being a major improvement over the Half Moon Bay-Colma Road it quickly grew functionally obsolete.  Old Pedro Mountain Road was added to the State Highway System during 1933 when Legislative Route Number 56 was extended from Cambria via the coastline to Fernbridge.  Old Pedro Mountain Road was later announced as part of California State Route 1 during August of 1934.  Old Pedro Mountain Road was replaced by Devils Slide during November 1937 which hugged the coastal bluffs on western Montara Mountain.  Devils Slide featured a 4.7 mile shorter alignment, carried 1,174 feet less in elevation variance, and featured 13,821 feet less turning radius compared to Old Pedro Mountain Road.  Old Pedro Mountain Road would in time erode over the decades but remains surprisingly well preserved as part of a multi-use trail in Montara State Beach connecting Montara north to Pacifica.

Looking for something different or obscure to see on California State Route 1?  Old Pedro Mountain certainly meets both those criteria and isn't something you won't see posted typically on popular social media.  We also have Gribblenation blog feature on Old Pedro Mountain Road which can be found below:

On this episode of the Gribblenation Roadcast Tom discusses an assorted list of Mojave Desert Road related topics recently seen in the Gribblenation Blog Series.  Which highway was almost built using Hydrogen Bombs?  Where did US Route 91 originally terminate in the Mojave Desert and how did it get there?  Where was the Arrowhead Trail through Valley of State Park and who was Charles Bigelow?  What is up with Zzyzx Road and why does it matter more historically than it might first appear?  To find out these answers and more spend your next 25 minutes listening on the Gribblenation Roadcast.

The Redwood Highway corridor on the South Fork Eel River (US Route 101, Avenue of the Giants, CA 271 and more)

The corridor of the Redwood Highway on the South Fork Eel River is an incredibly scenic stretch of highway which is carried by modern US Route 101, Avenue of the Giants and California State Route 271.  What tends to get overlooked about the Redwood Highway on the South Fork Eel River is how significant it was allowing automobiles to reach the North Coast of California.  Today in the Gribblenation Roadcast Tom discusses how the Redwood Highway on the South Fork Eel River bypassed the hellish Rattlesnake Grade and opened up the North Coast of California to the automobile.

US Route 99 in Turlock and the Turlock Overhead

US Route 99 in Turlock and the Turlock Overhead

Former US Route 99 in Turlock has an interesting history as it always kind of dragged behind the development of the rest of the highway in San Joaquin Valley.  The most notable structure on what was US Route 99 in Turlock was certainly the Turlock Overhead.  What is the Turlock Overhead and where was US Route 99 historically in Turlock?  Listen in to find out or check out of blog series below:

California State Route 1; the Shoreline Highway and Lost Coast

California State Route 1; the Shoreline Highway and Lost Coast

Most people who have driven California State Route 1 likely know it from the Big Sur region and probably have never come close to finishing the entire route.  North of the San Francisco Bay area California State Route 1 functions as a coastal loop from US Route 101 via the 210 mile Shoreline Highway.  California State Route 1 as originally conceived was far more ambitious and was originally planned end near Fortuna which would have required traversing the Lost Coast.  Never heard of California's Lost Coast?...give a listen here to find out where it is and why California State Route 1 was never completed as intended.

More on the unfinished portion of California State Route 1 through the Lost Coast region can be found on the Gribblenation blog site:
