Kickin' It With Matt Smith, Part 1: GrindWorks BMX Podcast 056
2 Months to upload an episode isn't too bad, right? Right??
AV drove out to Albany and kicked it with Matt Smith of The Yea. This is a Part 1 episode, with Part 2 dropping...?

Skateparks Are Like Gaybars (Defining Success): GrindWorks BMX Podcast 055
How do you define success? A lot of people consider the attainment of wealth, favor, or eminence the default definition. But what if there are other goals and motivations? How do we define and measure success in other ways?
This episode dives into this subject and I discuss learning tricks, school, athletics, work, starting a business, social media, and hobbies. Then we tackle a section at the end that is essentially the Lowdown, Part 3.

Styles For Myles Jam: GrindWorks BMX Podcast 053
Myles "Bubba" Roach, 11 years old, was killed on 10/30/2021 at the hands of a school bully. Since this horrific event, his parents, Jordan and Katelyn Roach, have been working on a jam in his memory and working on setting up a non-profit to "put all brakes on bullying".
This episode is a small glimpse into what happened, how the family is coping with the loss, and how they are using it as motivation to help curb bullying for others and promote BMX and other action sports as a means of averting bullying within their community. They've still got a long ways to go in the fight for justice, getting a formal 501c non-profit established, and getting stronger every day.

The Lowdown, Part 1: GrindWorks BMX Podcast 052
A lot of you have been wondering where we are, what we're doing, and probably if we are still here. The answers to some of that are in this episode, with at least another, maybe a third episode to follow bringing everyone up to speed on GrindWorks and myself (AV).
This episode was recorded over a year ago on a drive from NY to PA (excuse the poor audio quality) while I was moving my family back to NY. This was all quiet beforehand and announced on this podcast; problem was, I never posted it until now. Listen in, catch up, and send me any questions you have so I can address them on the next episode.

Trashfish: GrindWorks BMX Podcast 051
A lot of you may know the name Trashfish from Instagram more than you know the name Eddie Olschansky these days, as he spends more time fishing trash out of the river from his kayak than he does on his bike; If you're wondering why that is, then listen in! This was recorded just shy of a month ago and I am just finally getting around to posting it due to all the craziness going on over here right now. More on that next episode...

Derek Nelson: GrindWorks BMX Podcast 050
Derek Nelson took some time to sit down and discuss some of the issues he has been experiencing over the last 5 months regarding the shutdown of his skatepark, HCS, and his fabrication business, Spooky Action Industrial Arts, by the town. Things are moving forward and he has been able to operate SAIA with approval from the town, but the status of HCS as a skatepark open to the public is still in limbo with the town. The links to help out are provided below. If you have ever enjoyed the content Derek has created over the years (Road Fools 13, Tree Bicycle Co edits, HCS videos), been to a jam at the park, or just want to support something rad for the community, please do what you can! I will update the links below as more fundraisers are brought to my attention.

Josh Sorrentino and Kevin Czuba: GrindWorks BMX Podcast 048
Josh Sorrentino and Kevin Czuba came down to Pittsburgh for a weekend and while they were in town, we recorded this podcast episode. This was over a month ago and I am just finally getting around to posting it. There's a lot going on over here and hopefully I'll be able to update everyone soon. For now, give this a listen and just know that Josh came on with the intention of telling one specific joke, and then forgot to tell it, so expect a part 2 at some point ion the future.

Keystone RampWorks with Jeff and Mikki: GrindWorks BMX Podcast 042
This is the last of the skatepark and Coronavirus series and is with Jeff and Mikki of Keystone RampWorks (KSRW). KSRW is an indoor park that is only open part of the year until they secure a full-time location. Give this one a listen and go support the cause when you pass through the area!

Wedgewood Ramps with Russell Kaye: GrindWorks BMX Podcast 041
Wedgewood Ramps is a skatepark in Youngstown, OH with an early-2000's vibe and layout. I sat down with Russell and talked about the history of the park, the short and long-term impacts of Coronavirus on Wedgewood, and what they have going on for the future.
There's one more episode planned for the skateparks series around Coronavirus. After this one I think we'll highlight some more parks as we can, but plan to remove the focus on shutdowns.

The Wheel Mill with Harry Geyer: GrindWorks BMX Podcast 038
After having a plan in place to chat with Harry for an upcoming episode, and subsequently having all plans put on indefinite hold, I'm glad we were finally able to make this happen. Harry Geyer is the owner of The Wheel Mill bike park in Pittsburgh, PA. This episode is split into two main parts: The first is regarding some features of the park that are sometimes considered "lame" or "fun-killers" by patrons and allows Harry to explain why The Wheel Mill has to make some choices that they do and give him a voice in the discussion that happens within the park. He gives some really good insight into the "not-so-fun" sides of running a park and trying to create a sustainable business model. The second is regarding the current state of The Wheel Mill during the current Coronavirus pandemic, including some speculation into what re-opening "might" look like.
There's some links at the bottom to point you towards the Vans shoe fundraiser, the shirt selection over at Ink Division, and The Wheel Mill social medias.

InstaJams Announcement: GrindWorks BMX Podcast 037
Jams and contests seem to be a question on everyone's minds right now as we begin to re-emerge from nation-wide Stay-at-home orders and quarantines, while restrictions on gatherings remain in place. We have been trying to come up with an alternative for the last month or so and decided on a set of weekly InstaJams. Listen in for more details and check out the social media channels listed below for the flyers and more details as each event goes live!

James Weston: GrindWorks BMX Podcast 036
James is originally from the Owego, New York area and many of you will know him from the Binghamton scene; he now lives in Austin, Texas. I caught up with him when I was visiting in January, but couldn't make a podcast happen in-person, so we did it via Skype while we're all still quarantined.
This was very Binghamton-scene oriented and came out with a few good ideas for future episodes as well.

Karlis Fisers - Mantis Tattoo: GrindWorks BMX Podcast 035
This episode is with a small business owner and BMX rider in the Pittsburgh scene, Karlis Fisers, or as many will know him as Mantis Tattoo, or @813mantis. Karlis has ridden BMX since the early 1980's and also operated Mantis Tattoo, a tattoo and piercing shop, in Greensburg, PA for 16 years.
As you can imagine much of the discussion is related to the current Corona Virus (COVID-19) epidemic and the impact on small businesses such as his own, but we definitely talk about BMX as well.

Socially Distanced (Live-Stream): GrindWorks BMX Podcast 034
This episode was more of an experiment than anything else; seeing both what I can manage to do with my computer setup and also how responsive the audience would be to a live-stream format with the podcast. I recruited James Yusczyk to help co-host it, which was intended to be together in the same room, but due to the current state of the world, decided to do it via Skype, which also gave us a starting point for discussion.
This episode is somewhat a hodge-podge of information, jokes, and just a general hang-out with some of the Buffalo, NY crew who eventually hop into the Skype call towards the end. Overall, a fun episode to do. We didn't realize audio was being pushed at the beginning, but some of it was humorous so I edited it down and kept it in. I think we will do another one of these, but send your feedback and let us know what you think. For the full experience of this episode, check out the YouTube version.

Brad Barker - Shins_are_beat: GrindWorks BMX Podcast 033
I've never met Brad in person, but we've known each other via the internet for quite some time. There wasn't much of a plan going into this episode and it really turned into a recorded hangout session where we chatted about plenty of things from video games to the Thrasher BMX Jihad article to social media.
This isn't extremely focused and has some serious issues with syncing the audio to the Skype call which I will hopefully get fixed out better on future episodes if Skype is used. Regardless, there's some interesting discussion and we had a good time.
Feel free to drop a comment with feedback and any other suggestions for us, especially if it can help me out with the Skype audio.

Sam Weber: GrindWorks BMX Podcast 032
A lot of you may have seen or talked to Sam in the past at a handful of different events throughout the East Coast. He commonly refers to himself as "Sam from Mexico", drives a Honda Element typically equipped with a tent on the roof, and is an active farmer in Upstate NY.
Sam and I spent the entire weekend together before recording this, so we had a good bit to talk about. The first half of this podcast is very BMX and travel oriented. The latter half talks about farming and some of the stuff people may not know or understand about it.

First Time Using the New Setup (with Brant Moore): GrindWorks BMX Podcast 028
Brant Moore and I sat down and put the new setup to use both recording this episode and live streaming it on @brantmoore 's YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCWGijuL19i21bgv_ow2i2YA
The new setup feels good and should be substantially higher quality than previous uploads (recording at 1080p now, versus the 540p before). The ability to live-stream and record at the same time is going to be interesting as we move forward, although I'm unsure how often it will be utilized. When I do use it, I will likely stream to Mixer: www.mixer.com/grindworksbmx
Feel free to drop a comment with feedback on how this episode looked and sounded and any other suggestions for us. There are still some finer details being worked out within the studio setup itself, so there will still be a few changes coming in the future!

"What Really Grinds My Gears" with Sam Schrage: GrindWorks BMX Podcast 026
I've wanted to sit down in person with Sam Schrage for a while and get an episode recorded and it hasn't been able to work out. And, a while back we recorded a short test with the Anchor App and decided that while I was out of town for work it would be a good time to give it a real shot and record an episode. Sam and I chatted for quite some time about some random and at times probably controversial topics.
I am throwing this episode together rather quickly and trying to lock down another episode while out in Seattle.

Podcast Recap: GrindWorks BMX Podcast 025
GrindWorks BMX Podcast 025:
This episode has been in the works for a while and I really wanted it to be episode 020. However, the interviews kept flowing and we hit 020 without a chance to record this.
Anyway, this is a recap episode, talking about some of the changes over time that the podcast has had. It's timed perfectly as the last episode recorded at my (Andrew's) old apartment and the next episode will (most likely) be recorded in the new studio/office setup at my house. If someone wants to record an audio-only episode again, I would obviously squeeze that in beforehand.
Feel free to drop a comment with suggestions for us. There will be some changes coming in the future as a new studio setup continues to unfold!

Before packing up and moving to a new house, I sat down with James Yusczyk to do some recent event recap. I had no intention of it taking a month for me to be set up again, and even worse, I'm still not really. I didn't record an intro or outro for this one and just throwing it up as-recorded.

My old buddies Andy Rozelle and Tom Beckman came down to Pittsburgh for a long weekend back at the end of June. While they were here, we recorded this episode about their project/crew NWC BMX (No Worries Crew).

Matt Vargason: GrindWorks BMX Podcast 021
GrindWorks BMX Podcast 021:
This podcast was a fun one, specifically because it was just a typical hangout with my brother, Matt Vargason. Matt is a photographer and skateboarder, which lends to a slightly different discussion than usual.

GrindWorks BMX Podcast 020:
While most of you will know him as "The Bar End Guy", Cody Dixon is an interesting guy with a lot to talk about. Cody is good friends with the NoWear BMX crew and we talk quite a bit about them and what they have going on out in Nebraska.

Derek Nelson and Andy Nelson: GrindWorks BMX Podcast 018
GrindWorks BMX Podcast 018:
I was happy to be able to get some time with long-time friend Derek Nelson and asked his brother Andy to sit in with us as well. Like most of the time with both of them, we ended up just loosely chatting and joking around in Andy's living room. This is the second episode recorded using the portable recording setup.

Chris Doyle: GrindWorks BMX Podcast 016
GrindWorks BMX Podcast 016:
BMX legend and Pittsburgh local, Chris Doyle, was kind enough to stop by and hang out for a bit. We talked about BMX podcasts, including his own Palaver podcast; how he ended up living in Pittsburgh; and drops some big news about his family and future. This episode was recorded 2 months ago and intentionally delayed, as it was originally slated to be episode 014.

GrindWorks BMX Podcast 015:
Pittsburgh local, Ryan Connelly, comes by the podcast and we talk about injuries, BMX, and music. This episode has been a long time coming, as it was recorded almost a month ago, and then we just haven't had the time to get it processed and uploaded.

Brad Gibbs: GrindWorks BMX Podcast 012
GrindWorks BMX Podcast 012:
Brad Gibbs is a name that rings synonymous with Pittsburgh BMX and Pittsburgh street riding. He's been wanting to do one of these podcasts pretty much since the beginning and we definitely should have had him on sooner. We talked about quite a bit during this episode, including Brad needing a hook up on some wheels (hint hint!). Sit back and check out: Brad Gibbs!

Portland, Maine Crew: GrindWorks BMX Podcast 010
GrindWorks BMX Podcast 010:
For this episode, I sat down with a small crew from Portland, Maine that came through the Pittsburgh area and crashed at the apartment. I've met Josiah Webber a few times in the past, and Byron Dill and Bryon Farley for the first time on this trip of theirs.
This is the first podcast with multiple guests on at once. I'm curious to see what you guys think of this dynamic and whether we should stick to one-on-one podcasts for the foreseeable future, or play more with multiple people. This episode also sticks with the separate "intro" and "outro" and will now be a mainstay in the podcast as well. Feel free to drop a comment with suggestions for us.

"Jash" Geyer: GrindWorks BMX Podcast 009
GrindWorks BMX Podcast 009:
Josh "Jash" Geyer swung by to talk about BMX, life, and pants.
This podcast introduces an "intro" and "outro" which may become a regular thing, but is undecided at the moment. As the intro will describe, there was some technical difficulty with the YouTube version of this episode and the video quality is terrible. Feel free to drop a comment with suggestions for us.

Brant Moore: GrindWorks BMX Podcast 008
GrindWorks BMX Podcast 008:
Brant Moore came out to Pittsburgh for the Winter Welcome Jam at The Wheel Mill and crashed with Andrew Vargason while in town. Brant wanted to discuss some controversial BMX topics and we definitely get into it.
This podcast was originally intended to go up last week, but due to the delay for episode 007, this one slid out too. Feel free to drop a comment with suggestions for us. There were no substantial changes or adjustments to the setup for episode 008, but we are still maintaining a list of improvements and ideas we'd like to implement. The biggest upcoming change we want to make is to adjust camera placement for the YouTube version, which will include raising them up and isolation so that they are not prone to shock when the table gets bumped. These changes won't happen until episode 011 at the earliest (there's a backlog of episodes right now), but likely an episode or two later than that.

DJ Lockett: GrindWorks BMX Podcast 007
GrindWorks BMX Podcast 007:
Andrew Vargason sits down with DJ Lockett about bikes, children, and life in general. This one is up a week later than originally scheduled to launch audio-only versions of the podcast over here on Anchor.
Feel free to drop a comment with suggestions for us. There were no substantial changes or adjustments to the setup for episode 007, but we are still maintaining a list of improvements and ideas we'd like to implement.

Chase Bucci: GrindWorks BMX Podcast 006
GrindWorks BMX Podcast 006:
Chase Bucci talks about work, travel, bikes, and we promote the upcoming (01/26/2019) Winter Welcome Jam at The Wheel Mill bike park in Pittsburgh, PA. Had to post this one up ahead of schedule to make sure you have time to change your plans and get to Pittsburgh this weekend! Feel free to drop a comment with suggestions for us. We discuss at the end of this episode adding names to the podcast titles for easier viewing later on, but you probably noticed I already made these changes while uploading podcast 005.

Jesse Herzog: GrindWorks BMX Podcast 005
GrindWorks BMX Podcast 005:
Jesse Herzog comes on the show and we talk about bike riding, filming, and some upcoming projects. Jesse currently runs All Things Shred, a mixed sport outlet covering anything his crew is into at the time. He also discusses future plans he has with starting a new brand moving forward.
Feel free to drop a comment with suggestions for us. We got the boom arm, shock mount, wind screen, and pop filter all equipped to the microphone for this episode, so hopefully the sound is a little better. Thanks for listening and hit us on the socials at @grindworks_bmx on Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat; and @grindworksbmx on Facebook, Mixer, YouTube, and here on Anchor.

Jake Hoebler: GrindWorks BMX Podcast 004
GrindWorks BMX Podcast 004:
Jake Hoebler comes on the show and we talk about bikes, filming, travel, and some upcoming projects. Jake currently runs BMXASFXCK and may have another brand in the works, which he talks about here.
Feel free to drop a comment with suggestions for us. There were no significant changes from podcast 003 to podcast 004 as they were recorded only a day apart. A boom arm has been ordered and that should be received and mounted before the next podcast is recorded.

Alex Stape: GrindWorks BMX Podcast 003
GrindWorks BMX Podcast 003:
Andrew Vargason chats with Alex Stape about his recent motorcycle accident, his road to recovery, and what he's been up to in the meantime. Note: Audio gets a little sketchy around the 17:30 mark as a few details had to be removed on Alex's behalf. Sorry about that.
Feel free to drop a comment with suggestions for us. We still need to mount the microphone on an arm to balance audio better.

Tyler Cramer: GrindWorks BMX Podcast 002
GrindWorks BMX Podcast 002:
Andrew Vargason sits down with Tyler Cramer about bikes, filming, travel, and some upcoming projects. This is the second GrindWorks BMX podcast and it took a little more time than anticipated to line up.
Feel free to drop a comment with suggestions for us. We need to come up with an elegant way to mount the microphone, as AV's audio volume is slightly louder than Tyler's.

James Yusczyk: GrindWorks BMX Podcast 001
