On this episode of the Greater Than The Game Podcast, we talk with former Assistant Basketball Coach Stephen Sauers.  Sauers is the son of hall-of-fame college basketball Coach, Doc Sauers. In his career, he has had multiple coaching and administrative positions at programs like NJIT, Marist, and Seton Hall.  Sauers managed his roles without letting anyone know he was battling with OCD. 
The  Journey 
In the Podcast, Sauers talks about his basketball journey from his time as a college basketball player for his father to his time coaching overseas.  He opens up about his OCD and the strategies he uses to manage it. He also speaks on what pushed him to be more vocal about the condition and become a spokesperson for Mental Health Today, where he travels the country telling his story and raising awareness.

A Jet for Life: The Legacy of Connie Carberg, The NFL’s First Female Scout

In this episode of the Greater Than The Game Podcast, we have a fascinating conversation with Connie Carberg, the NFL's first female scout. Carberg takes us on a journey through her football career, starting with finding her passion for the sport when the AFL was formed in the 1960s.

We delve into her journey to find herself and stay involved with football in college at Ohio State University under the tutelage of legendary head coach Woody Hayes.


 Carberg then shares her experiences working with the Jets, initially as a secretary for the scouting department. We explore her remarkable transition from being a secretary to adding additional duties as a scout, and she provides insight into her responsibilities on draft day and the exhilarating experience of making a selection for the Jets in the NFL Draft. She also reveals her discovery of Jets legend Mark Gastineau.

A Touchdown of a Life Time: The Journey of Cancer Survivor Turned Walk-on Timmy Ward

On this episode of the Greater Than The Game Podcast, we talk with Rutgers football player Timmy Ward. Ward made headlines across New Jersey after scoring a touchdown on a blocked punt against the Michigan Wolverines during this season, but that moment only scratches the surface of Timmy Ward's incredible story.

The Comeback

Ward grew up wrestling and playing football. He attended Canton High School, where he became a standout on both sides of the ball. He ended his junior season with 645 yards and seven touchdowns at wide receiver and 84 tackles and 11 interceptions at defensive back, earning him all-state honors for the second consecutive season.

After the end of the season, Ward had a biopsy on a swollen lymph node and was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma causing him to miss the rest of the school year due to treatments. In the podcast, Ward breaks down what kept him going during his treatment and how the game of football took on a whole new meaning for him during his recovery. In 2019, he was declared cancer free and chose to make his return to the wrestling mat, coming in 6th place in the Pennsylvania state tournament.

The next year, Ward returned to the football field but suffered an ACL tear that ended his season. Check out the podcast above to find out what got him through his injury and how he turned a job as an equipment manager at Rutgers into a roster spot at the highest level of college football.
