Episode 101 - Highs & Lows with Zak Sally

Episode 101 - Highs & Lows with Zak Sally

Many people are saying that with the 100th episode in the can, it's all downhill from here. But worry not listener, for the boys are still doing this show for some reason. And what better way to kick off the next chapter in the Gutter Gang lore than with this week's guest, Minneapolis-based cartoonist, publisher, educator, and musician Zak Sally. We talk about his new book, Sammy the Mouse Book 3 (Killgore Books/La Mano 21), having returned from a nearly decade-long hiatus. We also discuss his return, why he needed to take a step back from small press comics, his time as an educator, and his overall thoughts on what comics means to him after nearly 30+ years in the game.

You can check out La Mano 21's webshop where you can purchase their fine publications and follow Zak on Instagram @zak_sally.

It's all come down to this. The 100th episode of Gutter Boys. It's going to be emotional. This one is packed to the gills with what the kids are calling content. To help us celebrate, we're joined with special returning guest Pat Rooks to reflect on the last four years of this thing of ours, his tabling experiences so far in 2023, and how his work has progressed since the last time he was in the hot seat. We also have a ton of voicemails left by friends, fans, and past guests to usher in our landmark episode. Be sure to listen carefully as you may recognize a voice or three. Or ten. What about twenty? How about thirty? You get the idea.

Episode 99 - Crying on the Internet Kevin Budnik

Wow! Gutter Gang, we're almost at the coveted 100th episode. Time sure does seem to fly when you're miserable. But before we pop open the champagne, we should first talk about this week's guest: Chicago-based cartoonist and illustrator Kevin Budnik. Renowned for his autobio series I Hope This Finds You and It's OK To Be Sad, Kevin is also a solid friend in the scene and it's embarrassing it took this long to have him finally on the show. We dive into how and why he went from posting diary comics every day to transitioning to Patreon to share his work, his time at Columbia College, his upcoming book and how it will be vastly different from his prior output, and how much the small press world has changed since ye old tumblr days.

Check out Kevin's work on their website and support him on Patreon. You can also follow him on Instagram @kevin_budnik & Twitter @knittedsweater.

Episode 93 - Please End It All

Episode 93 - Please End It All

Can't believe it's been four years of Gutter Boys. Nothing flashy for this episode: no guests, no wacky reveals - none of that. We figured it only made sense to go classico mode and trade some general comics chitter chatter and how we're all looking forward to 20 more years of live-action superhero content that's definitely not made for developmentally stunted babies. Now go out there and crack some heads and create some earners out there.

Ep 92 - In the Mood for Posts with Erwin Papa

Apple is officially on #PACKWATCH. While the boys are in the intro, Cam is MIA for the interview due to his Mac eating shit. JB takes over as the de facto host and is joined with LA-based artist Erwin Papa to talk about his career, his comics The Angriest Warrior and his recently crowdfunded anthology book Endangered African Horn Man & Juggy, the learning curve of making comics, and the relevance of social media for artists in 2023. This one runs longer than usual, but it's a great interview and we barely covered everything that we wanted to discuss. Expect Erwin to return on a future Patreon-exclusive bonus episode.

Episode 76 - The Dark Knight's Dong Rises with Ryan Alves

Episode 76 - The Dark Knight's Dong Rises with Ryan Alves

When the 2021 Guysner Award winner Nate McDonough asked us to have Providence-based cartoonist and illustrator Ryan Alves on an episode, we knew this was a big favor. Would we set a dangerous precedent by allowing someone to dictate who comes on? Would Ryan Alves meet the high watermark set by past guests? The answer to both questions is yes. If you're a Guysner winner, you get more leeway. And besides, Ryan is great and he would've been on the show anyway. To Nate's credit, he did expedite the process. Again, Guysner. After a few scheduling conflicts, we finally sat down with Ryan to talk about his rapidly growing body of work including Bubblegum Maelstrom and Moustache, why he got into comics, his experience at the Winter Hocking Hills Cartoonist Retreat, and who has the biggest hog in Batman's rogues gallery (it's Bane).

Check out his work at on his website and follow him on Instagram @alvestagram and Twitter @AWE_comics.

Episode 73 - Try Finger, But Hole with Jasper Jubenvill

Even though we said we wouldn't have repeat guests on the main feed, it's only fair to have 2021's Pimp of the Year Jasper Jubenvill come on for a second time to really hash it out for the listeners. We go in-depth about process, his influences, his current love affair with Elden Ring, and why Cam loves WWE2K22 so much.

EDITOR'S NOTE: We erroneously referred to Nate McDonough as a Pimp of the Year when in fact he was only the recipient of the Dudes Rock Award. JB will receive 20 lashings from Nate for his transgression and we hope you can find it in your hearts to forgive us.

Follow Jasper on Instagram @jasper.jubenvill. He does not have a website yet, so be sure to judge him harshly for that.

Trash bags filled with cut ribbons and torn wrapping paper line the streets. Fridges across the country are packed to the brim with Tupperware containers full of leftovers. Episode 61 - Train Talk with Blake Sims

Clear the tracks because the Gutter Boys train is leaving the station! The boys are back with another interview from the Hocking Hills Cartoonist Retreat and this time it's none other than long time friend of the show Blake "The Uncle King" Sims. Based out of Bowling Green, Kentucky, Blake is a true comics soldier who's been cranking out pages since high school and doesn't show signs of letting up any time soon. His last book, Logor, was one of our top picks from last year and his upcoming book, Sicko Hunter, is shaping up to be another contender for 2021. We talk about his long love for comics, his early influences, and what he's hoping to accomplish in the near future. We also sprinkled in some wrestling talk because of course Blake is also a wrestling fan and it would've been disingenuous to not bring it up.

If you want to check out more of Blake's work or stay updated on what he's up to, give him a follow on Twitter and Instagram @blakersims.

Episode 58 - Barely Legal with Nate Garcia

Episode 58 - Barely Legal with Nate Garcia

You have a collect call from Ligma, do you accept? Of course you do, because it's time for another episode of GUTTER BOYS. The boys are joined by a literal boy, Philly-based cartoonist Nate Garcia, to talk about how he can't even legally buy a beer yet but has still made more comics than most of you scrubs. His self-published body of work includes three issues of his one-person anthology Hornrim and his newest book Alanzo Sneek, available now directly from his webstore. Nate is a great dude and someone we've been meaning to have on the show for a while now, so it's nice to finally have him on instead of just reading his DM's asking us what we had for breakfast again.

You can follow him on Instagram @nategarciascartoons. If you want to support his work and free him from his current slumlord, donate to his Patreon and tell him we sent you.

Questions? Comments? Suggestions? Email us at gutterboyspodcast@gmail.com and we'll read it on the next episode, or give the Gutter Boys a follow on Instagram and Twitter (JB: @mortcrimpjr; Cam: @camdelrosario). Episode 57 - King of Queens with Jaime Hernandez

Episode 57 - King of Queens with Jaime Hernandez

Autoptic is back with the Gutter Boys, baby! Pete Faecke joins us once again to break down what to expect from the Autoptic 2021 Digital Festival, and we're starting things on a high note with special guest Jaime Hernandez to talk about his new art book, Queen of the Ring - Wrestling Drawings by Jaime Hernandez. To cut to the chase, we skipped out on news and shout outs for this week (don't worry, they'll return on the next main feed episode) to get down and dirty with Jaime about his love of pro wrestling, what made him decide to release his never-before-seen drawings to the public, and his thoughts on the current landscape of comics and cartooning. So don't be a pencil necked geek and miss out on this banger of an episode. Hit that play button, or we're dropping you through a stack of tables!

Jaime doesn't really have any social media, but it's not like his work is hard to find.

Follow Autoptic on Instagram @autopticfestival and Twitter @autopticfest for more updates on their digital programming for this year. You can also check out their video interviews on their Youtube channel or stream the audio on their Anchor feed.

Episode 49 - Dude, Where's My Bong with Aubrey Sitterson

It is time for your bi-weekly Gutter Boys fix, sweaty. We're joined by LA-based comic writer Aubrey Sitterson to discuss his upcoming crowdfunded comics, Beef Bros (with Tyrell Cannon & Fico Ossio) and Stoned Master (with Chris Moreno), as well as his Dark Horse run with No One Left to Fight (with Fico Ossio) and the recently announced Savage Hearts (Jed Dougherty & Lovern Kindzierski). In the first half, the boys go over some recent comic names in the news who seem to have a penchant for sexualizing children (and yes it's comicsg@te related), promising non-profit business models for comics, and the problem with charging creators to be published in anthologies.

Check out more of Aubrey's work at his website or follow him on Instagram & Twitter @@aubreysitterson.

Back at it with another heaping of GUTTER BOYS! We're joined by our special guest, Sam Szabo. Sam is a Chicago-based cartoonist and master of yuck-yucks. She's created a large body of work exploring her life and experiences through her auto-bio comics, discussing relationships, nostalgia, and her transition as a woman. We go through it all, from her early years in college, her origin story of how she became a cartoonist dedicated to a life of making comics, and her love for The Tick. We also shout out a few creators that have sent us their work over the last few weeks and take a quick dip into the murky waters of NFT.
