How to Make the Perfect Career - Panel Talk
Enjoyed the @ypthrive impact talk. I had several takeaways from the panelists and the conversations. Most questions did not have a one size fits all solution. Everyone is unique so the journey is unique.
A quick summary is below.
1. Personal development. The best investment we can make is in ourselves. Everyone had a different way about doing this.
My learning has evolved over the years as a lot of my development comes from every day life. I still lean into reading and course work.
We spoke about reading and the importance of ideas and perspectives. Leaders take advantage of coaching, courses, and communities to grow.
My favorite book is definitely Shoe Dog.
2. Mentorship. We talked about finding mentors and also getting to a point where confident to share what we know.
We discussed becoming the mentor. That said the secret is that everyone is still learning and striving.
This is a life-long process regardless of industry. In fact sharing more of what we know accelerates our growth.
There won't be a magic moment when this switch happens from follower to leader. The truth is you can start where you are now.
3. Life. The topic of work life balance came up and everyone agreed that family is a critical part of the journey.
There will be difficult decisions to make and we all have different ways of handling.
We can always do more but what are we doing with what we have? How do we make the time we have count?
I pondered these questions after.
What are your top ways that you develop your career? Leave your strategy in the comments. :)

Episode 106: How To Be A Successful Artist - Interview With Norman Wyatt Jr
Artist Norman Wyatt Jr. seems to have always been involved in the Fine Arts. As early as the second grade, he would travel once a week to the area high school to sit under the gifted art instructor, surrounded by juniors and seniors. This passion would later lead Norman to pursue Fine Art at Virginia State University, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Visual Communications, Art and Design. Much of Norman’s inspiration comes from his early years and past professional experiences. As a native of Virginia, Norman grew up captivated by the colors and sounds of nature. As a senior in college, Norman worked at an African-inspired gift shop, constantly surrounded by authentic sculptures, fabrics, and jewelry. After finishing college, Wyatt worked as an elementary art teacher, instructing kindergarten through fourth grade students. He would reach the imaginations of his young pupils by constantly adorning the classroom and halls with bright, energetic bulletin boards. Norman actually developed many of his signature techniques and looks during breaks from classes. ” I had a long table set up in the corner of my classroom, where I created numerous landscapes, still lifes, and abstracts, to keep myself painting. After a while, I realized that I had developed a look that was different or interesting enough to show a fine art publisher.” Wyatt equates being an artist to a sponge, constantly absorbing everything visually, to ressurect for later use. He loves the gift of being an artist, never taking it for granted. Norman lives in Virginia with his wife and three children.

Episode 99: The Esha Chabra (Alaya Tea) Interview
We started Alaya to help time slow down, and to build a kinder tea business -- one that’s kind to its people, to the nature it relies on, and to you, who drinks it. In the eastern Indian state of West Bengal, Darjeeling, a community famous for producing the Champagne of tea, sits amidst the Himalayas. Here, time unravels more slowly. An iconic train makes its way up the mountains, over hours, to this old British outpost. As the fog lifts, women can be seen hugging the sloping tea estates each morning, plucking two leaves and a bud, or tea, by hand. Meanwhile, they sing. It's magical. Nearby, fields of chamomile flowers grace the valleys. Mint grows abundantly. These are the bounties of nature, cultivated by women, resulting in the highest quality teas and herbs. Women are the backbone of agriculture in so many of these communities, be it in Darjeeling, Assam, or Kerala. We are a company that celebrates the beauty of these women in the tea growing regions of the worlds. E92: The Dommonic Nelson (Clevtech) Interview
Dommonic Nelson is a growth-minded business professional driven by a positive desire to make a radical impact in various industries and improve the lives of others. It is his commitment to go from inexperienced to competent that has boosted his progression in business. At 25 years old, he launched his first business, a kid company focused on bringing pretend-play back to homes across America. With his strong belief in Albert Einstein's quote,"Imagination is more important than knowledge," he co-created America's first patented puppet and pillow combination, powered by imagination. After learning that Jennifer Telfer, the creator of Pillow Pets, sold over 70 million plush toys worldwide, he set out to do the same, but with a focus on bringing storytime to life and reinvigorating the power of imagination. He views his early business experiences as preparation for his incredible vision for to-go orders at restaurants being dubbed as The Yummy Box. In a few short months after launching this new type of smart locker, Houston Business Journal honored his startup as one of the twenty-six most innovative companies in Houston, and Google awarded $20,000 in Cloud-Based Services. He graduated from Texas Southern University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Maritime Transportation Management and Security. His prolific work ethic earned him a full-tuition academic scholarship and the opportunity to be the first African American student in TSU's 72-year history to be selected as an intern by the United States Coast Guard. As a full-time student, he successfully managed a full-time job and volunteered weekly in many Houston communities. During his eight weeks as an intern with the United States Coast Guard, he received leadership training from high ranking officers and learned the importance of devotion to duty. While his success as a young business professional, leader, and startup strategist has been immensely rewarding, he maintains an insatiable desire to join the United States Armed Forces. He wants to join and represent the best and brightest that America has to offer. Dommonic Nelson is a self-motivated individual that lives by the statement,"If you're not making someone else's life better, then you're wasting your time." His hunger as an entrepreneur comes from his desire to live a full-blown life experience with no boundaries or restrictions and an opportunity to represent an alternative to his community on wealth creation outside of the traditional pursuits of sports and entertainment. Long way to go, but he's staying consistent. His love to learn and lead will keep him valuable in the marketplace and allow him to continue to make

E65: The April Sciacchitano (Mix+Shine Marketing and PR) Interview
Like many great ideas, it started with margaritas.
We spent the first part of our marketing and PR careers working both in house and at a national agency. We met on Twitter, and then we worked together at a national agency. For over two years, we were a powerhouse team.
Over margaritas one night, at the end of a very long day, we asked each other… what’s stopping us from growing our own business?
We could work the way we like to work best with the people we like to work with. All we had to do was take the leap.
Was it the margarita talking?
The next morning we waited on the coffee to brew in the office kitchen. So… were you serious? With caffeine in place of tequila, the answer was yes. We were going to try.
And without a name or a plan, that is the moment Mix+Shine was unofficially born.
We’ve created a new agency model that curates the best marketing team for your specific business needs.Bringing together a top-talent team of fun and dedicated professionals, we specialize in awareness campaigns that attract a larger audience to your brand through social media, PR and content.
After spending our careers working at big agencies, we decided to set out on our own and offer big brand results without all the red tape, fine print, and corporate fluff.

E49: The Nez Nelson (Nezlife Studios) Interview
I named it Amygdala. It’s actually a pretty bad painting, but it’s beautiful to me.
That first painting gave me back my joy. The joy I desperately wanted to find when I was forced to turn off mommy mode and go into warrior mode during twenty years in the Navy and three combat tours. The joy I searched so hard for when I was bedridden for two years after battling cancer. So much emotion and pain was poured onto that canvas. I didn’t expect anything from it, but it gave me so much back in return.
In my deepest darkest depression, my therapist wrote me a prescription to watch Bob Ross videos. I thought he was full of it. But when I do something, I go all in. It didn’t take long for those happy little trees to win me over, but there was just one problem.
I WANTED TO PAINT, BUT I COULDN’T.It’s not that I didn’t have the skills — I got a scholarship to NYU for graphic design, used to do hand lettering, and even tagged a few walls in my graffiti days. I may have looked healthy, but I was sick. I still am.
I didn’t have the dexterity and motor skills to paint, and no amount of Bob Ross videos could change that. I couldn’t even shower without my husband’s help. After radiation treatment for my cancer, I felt completely incapable and useless in my own body. There was a constant burning sensation in my arms and hands, which would later be diagnosed as Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
I kept watching those videos.
BOB ROSS KEPT TELLING ME I COULD DO IT, AND ONE DAY I BELIEVED HIM.Finally I said, “what if I just tried?”
There had to be something I could do. I went on YouTube and saw people with no arms painting with their feet. If they could hold a paintbrush between their toes, I could find a way to paint too.
What did I have to lose? I already lost my joy. Life just meant pain. There was no cure for what I was suffering from. This was just how life was going to be.
I stumbled upon a method of painting that involved mixing paint with a medium in a cup, pouring it over a canvas, and just moving it around a little. This looked like something I could do. So my husband went to Michael’s and bought me all the supplies to do my first pour painting. He says it’s the best $200 he ever spent.

E41: The Kaycee McCoy and Cara C. Alexander (Create/Captivate Digital Marketing) Interview
Hi, I’m Kaycee McCoy, a digital marketing & branding expert based in Norfolk, Virginia.
The entrepreneurial spirit runs through my veins. My parents were successful small business owners, but they ran blue collar companies like crude oil drilling and rock hauling. Growing up in that environment gave me a unique perspective on life; the moral of the story is that entrepreneurship was the norm and I’ve had a penchant for small business my entire life. At the ripe age of 5 years old I was happily answering the business phone and talking on the CB Radio to our truck drivers. And while most kids were babysitting or running lemonade stands in middle school, I was carefully crafting greeting cards and creating bracelet companies. Small business life is a part of my DNA: it’s who I am.
There is no greater privilege in my professional life than to team up with aspiring entrepreneurs, solopreneurs and small business owners of all kinds to make their business ventures come to life through captivating marketing services and campaigns.
Hi, I’m Cara, the Marketing Assistant at Create/Captivate Digital Marketing.
I am a recent graduate from Georgia Southern University with a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts for Graphic Design. I received the HOPE Scholarship all four years and won the Student Silver ADDY Award in February of 2018 for my senior group project: Georgia’s History in 50 Objects, Georgia Southern University Museum Exhibition.
Transplanted to the Norfolk area in the summer of 2018, my husband and I are loving exploring the area and all it has to offer. When I’m not helping Create/Captivate clients with their creative and marketing needs you can find me at the gym, walking our dog or volunteering in the community.

E30: The Sarah Beth Cowherd (Vessel Craft Coffee) Interview
Vessel Craft Coffee
Vessel Craft Coffee, founded by Norfolk native Sarah Beth Cowherd, is a social entrepreneurship initiative. It began with a dream to combine the complex world of specialty craft coffee with the desire to bring something of value to the community in which it exists.
Vessel Craft Coffee buys coffee beans from farms around the world that pay fair wages, provide humane working conditions, and practice sustainable farming methods. Working with these farmers helps to reduce poverty and prevent deforestation.
The coffee is then locally roasted, taking into careful consideration the country of origin and specific characteristics of the bean to achieve certain flavor profiles.

E26: The Kevin O'Connor (O'Connor Brewing Company) Interview
At O’Connor Brewing Co. we are all about having fun, building a strong community, and hand-crafting unique, innovative products—in other words, brewing great beer.
20 years ago Kevin O’Connor wrote his final college paper on starting his own brewery, and on St. Patrick’s Day 2010 O’Connor Brewing Co. brewed its first batch, becoming one of Coastal Virginia’s very first craft breweries. What started from humble beginnings in a small garage warehouse has expanded to become a World Beer Cup Award winning brand, with 40 employees, dozens of styles, and a growing legion of fans who choose O’Connor beer for its quality and consistency.
O’Connor beer drinkers come from all walks of life, but what brings them together is a love of the small, simple joys in life. The pleasure of being outdoors, relaxing on the beach with friends, having dinner with family after a day of hard work, and of course, enjoying a fresh, flavorful beer. They appreciate the O’Connor brand for its approachability and authenticity. They value its independent spirit, that it remains family owned and operated, and its support of the local community. And their loyalty has established it as a mainstay brand with sustained success. With El Guapo Agave IPA leading the way as the #1 Virginia craft brand in the state, O’Connor Brewing is well on its way to becoming Virginia’s leading, independent craft brewery. And as distribution continues to expand up and down the East Coast, O’Connor Brewing Co. moves further along its path to becoming a major mid-Atlantic regional brand, as well as one of the best craft breweries in America.
