February 2023's Woodbridge High's Alumni Showcase interview with State Representative Eric Morrison and WHS Senior Amani.

It might be April, but we are still playing catch up with a long list of podcasts done from January 2023 to present.

This February WHS alumni podcast catches up with WoodBridge Alumni State Representative Eric Morrison interviewed by our at first, nervous WHS senior Amani. We say at first because we do believe you will sense how she eases into this interview. YES, this was an interview done by phone so we could capture the Woodbridge High Alumni - Representative Morrison. Enjoy the insights that still ring true in today's challenging society, and how to successfully navigate those challenges.

Representative Morrison has been a huge advocate for helping pass State Bill 195, an advocate of advancing the abilities of school librarians to be well-represented, and has continued to support varying measure to improve education. He has been a positive voice and influence for students, community members, and education proponents alike.

Alumni Speaker Series #1 with Isabella and Mr. Josh Miller of All Span, Inc.

Alumni Speaker Series #1 with Isabella and Mr. Josh Miller of All Span, Inc.

This first episode kicks off the first of many to come in our Alumni Speaker series at Woodbridge High School.  Local business owners that are alumni of Woodbridge School Dostrict are asked to come back home and reflect on their experiences.  We are grateful to All Span Inc. for their support in many projects as our food drive and support as a sponsor of our athletic hill built for Cross Country Training.  We are lucky to be rich in alumni with generous hearts and full of wisdom.

Mission Statement

To promote fellowship and pride among Woodbridge High School (WHS) students and alumni and to create content that educates, informs and inspires.

Overview

The Woodbridge High School Alumni Speaker series will accomplish these goals through a guest speaker program focused on continued learning, advance knowledge, and informational awareness by guests sharing stories of their personal journeys to success, what challenges were encountered, how those were met and overcome and, importantly, how those, along with failure, can be the stepping stones to achievement.

Description

Monthly presentations and round-table discussion by WSD alumni from different walks of life who have proven successes in business, academics, government, non-profits, etc. that reflect the diversity of our student body. By working with the WHS Administration, we would schedule these to correspond with lunch and/or study hours, would be held in the WHS Library and attendance would be voluntary. We fully expect that attendance at the first one or two presentations could be scarce but, as word-of-mouth and interest grows, we fully expect going attendance would be significant.

Classic Upward Bound Week 6 Episode 2 Places and Spaces

Classic Upward Bound Week 6 Episode 2 Places and Spaces

We continue with an informative and telling reality of what is accessible and what is not thanks to Kamira's honest reaction to a previous issue we discussed on how community often is not open and welcoming to some individuals and can be isolating.  Her view point is so valuable!    Parts you might not be able to hear, as I edited MUCH out already, but it was vital to keep what is here, so below is the transcript, as close as I can get it, to her reaction.

"People having centers for common interests like in youth centers, like the YMCA

That is one of the things out here we do not have anything like that

If it is we have to afford it and go out and find it like swimming pools and so something like bring a lot of that optimism- out – because people from different backgrounds could all be at that one place with a common interest like a positive from a common community center

The YMCA has become like a membership with fees –

Back when we were growing up it was like a community place where everything was free and activities were free for kids and __________________ but now it is geared towards supporting the higher income people instead of free for everyone so that is where that has shut off for others.

Kids my age had spent the summers there but it was very expensive

If you do not have insurance, or healthcare and stuff, it is expensive, like 120.00 a week.

And the age stops at 12.

The kids that need a place to go most, don’t."
