Food For The Dead: On The Trail Of The New England Vampire With Michael Bell

Food For The Dead: On The Trail Of The New England Vampire With Michael Bell

For nineteenth- century New Englanders, 'vampires' lurked behind tuberculosis. To try and rid their houses and communities from the scourge of the wasting disease, families sometimes relied on folk practices, including exhuming and consuming the bodies of the deceased. Author and folklorist Michael Bell has spent decades pursuing stories of the vampire in New England. My Special Guest is Michael Bell Michael E. Bell has a Ph.D. in Folklore from Indiana University, Bloomington; his dissertation topic was African American voodoo beliefs and practices. He has an M.A. in Folklore and Mythology from the University of California at Los Angeles, and a B.A. , with M.A. level course work completed, in Anthropology/Archaeology from the University of Arizona, Tucson. Bell was the Consulting Folklorist at the Rhode Island Historical Preservation & Heritage Commission, Providence, Rhode Island, for more than twenty-five years. He has also taught courses in folklore, English, anthropology and American studies at several colleges and universities. His book, Food for the Dead: On the Trail of New England's Vampires, was a BookSense 76 Pick and winner of the Lord Ruthven Assembly Award for Best Nonfiction Book on Vampires. He has completed the manuscript for a second book on American vampires, titled The Vampire’s Grasp: The Hidden History of Consumption in New England. The Savagery of Consumption and it's link with the Vampire Though scholars today still struggle to explain the vampire panics, a key detail unites them: public hysteria almost invariably occurred in the midst of savage tuberculosis outbreaks. Typically, a rural family contracted the wasting illness, and- even though they often received the standard medical diagnosis and treatment- the survivors blamed early victims as vampires, responsible for preying upon family members who subsequently fell ill. Often an exhumation was called for, to stop the vampire's predations. Vampire Exhumations

The particulars of the vampire exhumations, vary widely, in many cases, only family and neighbours participated. But sometimes town fathers voted on the matter, or medical doctors and clergymen gave their blessings or even pitched in. Some communities in Maine and Plymouth, Massachusetts, opted to simply flip the exhumed vampire facedown in the grave and leave it at that. In Connecticut, Rhode Island and Vermont, though, they frequently burned the dead person's heart, sometimes inhaling the smoke as a cure. These rituals could be clandestine, lantern lit affairs or public knowledge with participants placing ads in the local newspaper for anyone to attend. In this episode, you will be able to: 1. Delve into the captivating stories of dying men, women and children who believed they were food for the dead.

2. Investigate questions surrounding the exhumation of a loved one. The impact on family and community and who these individuals and communities were. 3. Explore the ritual practices involved in dealing with the 'vampire' threat and how these could evolve and change.

4. Delve into first hand eye witness records, letters and diaries.

5. Examine testimony from interviews with descendants of Mercy Brown (Rhode Island, 1892) one of the best documented cases of the exhumation of a corpse in order to perform rituals to banish an undead manifestation.

Alehouse Haunts: Where History and Ghosts Collide with Lorien Jones

Alehouse Haunts: Where History and Ghosts Collide with Lorien Jones

Step into the world of the UK's oldest pubs, where time seems to stand still, and the echoes of bygone eras reverberate through the air. Join guest Lorien Jones from Alehouse Haunts, as she takes us through some of their doors. Get ready to embark on a journey through time to explore their unique history and the spirits of the departed that still make themselves known. My Special Guest is Lorien Jones Lorien's interest in the world of ghosts started when she was a child. She began investigating the paranormal in 2006, attending a public event at Alton Towers and hasn't looked back. She launched her business The Ghost Book on Halloween 2013. This was a website which covered many ghostly elements, including the Ghost Hunt Diary on which she advertised events for many of the respectable companies operating in the UK. From here she made many life long friends and acquaintances in the paranormal field. In 2020 she felt herself growing away from the events advertising and began her new venture, Alehouse Haunts. At this time she also began writing for the Haunted Magazine in the autumn of 2020 and was asked to be a brand ambassador in 2022. The Haunting History of Execution Dock At one time the world's largest port, it is hardly surprising that London has a prolific connection with piracy. Lorien explains the haunting history of this area and how if you were charged with piracy, and found guilty, convicts were paraded from the prison over London Bridge, past the Tower of London and towards Wapping where Execution Dock was located. Streets would often be lined with spectators. After a final quart of ale the prisoner would be led to the dock where a shortened rope was placed around their neck whereupon they were executed by hanging. During the suffocation, a prisoner's limbs would spasm and they would be seen to dance which was nicknamed by spectators as the Marshal's Dance. Once dead, the bodies were held in place for three tides. Ghostly goings-on at The Prospect of Whitby Despite being almost entirely destroyed by fire in the 1800s, the internal fittings of The Prospect of Whitby likely originated from shipping timbers. This popular establishment would have been one of the final drinking places for pirates as they broke their journey on their way to Execution Dock. It is said to be haunted by the spirits of many of those condemned men as well as 'moll cutpurse.' In this episode, you will be able to: Delve into the captivating historical past of The Prospect of Whitby and to the reported paranormal activity there. Investigate the types of mysterious occurrences and ghostly sightings at other haunted pubs. Explore some of the dark history of Execution Dock and some of the notorious figures to have been sentenced to death there. Discover the history and paranormal encounters of The Old Vicarage Hotel in Bridgwater with guest and owner Candida Leaver. Featured in Help My House Is Haunted Season 4, the Hotel is full of charm and character as well as several locations that boast of paranormal activity.

"I was staying in Room 5 alone when someone clearly sat on the end of the bed. I didn't feel scared, just curious." Guest Feedback

"Whilst walking down the stairs in the main building I was tapped firmly on the shoulder." Guest Feedback

My Special Guest is Candida Leaver

Candida Leaver purchased The Old Vicarage Hotel in the heart of Bridgwater in 2019 with her husband Peter. Before taking on The Old Vicarage, they owned The Bower Inn. Having fallen in love with the Hotel the couple have lovingly spent time and resources to renovate the Hotel to make it an inviting and cosy place to visit for its beautiful garden, delicious food and luxurious facilities.

The History of The Old Vicarage Hotel

St Mary Street in Bridgwater contains a line of fourteenth century cottages including the Old Vicarage Hotel which was given in the sixteenth century by Edward de Chedzoy to be used as a vicarage. The Old Vicarage, which dates back to 1327, has a south facing patio and garden within its central courtyard, which is accessed by an ancient archway, once used by horses and carriages.

Originally built of wattle and daub, The Old Vicarage is certainly the oldest domestic premises in the town, only the church itself dating back any further.  As a one-time coaching house, it continued life as the Steynings Tea Rooms before reverting to its Old Vicarage title. The Hotel is a charming building with some wonderful historical links to Bridgwater’s past, including reputably being the place Judge Jeffreys stayed and, also, providing lodgings for Isambard Kingdom Brunel, who designed the train station and a bridge in the town.

Ghostly goings-on at The Old Vicarage
The Old Vicarage Hotel, located in Somerset, has a diverse history of paranormal activity. This quaint and atmospheric location has been the site of numerous ghost sightings and unexplained phenomena such as reports of unexplained footsteps, phantom women, ghostly pushes and objects being moved. Candy takes us through some of these experiences and reports from guests and staff as well as exploring their connections with the local history. With first hand accounts from staff and guests you can explore the ghostly goings-on for yourself.

In this episode, you will be able to:

Delve into the captivating past of The Old Vicarage Hotel and its connection with the Church opposite as well as historical figures such as Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

Investigate some of the mysterious occurrences and ghostly sightings frequently reported.

Explore some of the eerie ghostly encounters and their connection with the history of the local area.

Ghosts in Ancient Mesopotamia: Prof. Irving Finkel's Discoveries

Ghosts in Ancient Mesopotamia: Prof. Irving Finkel's Discoveries

Do you think you know the first documented ghosts? Join us in this episode as Irving Finkel reveals the secrets of the supernatural in ancient cultures. Prepare to explore the intriguing spiritual beliefs of our ancestors as we uncover the mysteries of Mesopotamia regarding ghosts and the afterlife in their society.

In this episode, you will:

Uncover the mysterious beliefs of ancient Mesopotamians regarding ghosts and the afterlife.

Delve into the fascinating role of burial rituals and tomb-building in Mesopotamian society.

Be astonished by the malevolent spirits, demons, and exorcism practices that proliferated in ancient times.

Comprehend the immense significance of supernatural beliefs in shaping the understanding of the world.

My special guest is Irving Finkel

Professor Irving Finkel, an esteemed British Philologist and Assyriologist with a love for unravelling the mysteries of ancient Mesopotamia. As the Assistant Keeper of Ancient Mesopotamian Script, Languages, and Cultures at the British Museum, he has spent decades studying cuneiform inscriptions on clay tablets, bringing to life the stories and beliefs of long-gone civilizations. In his captivating book, The First Ghosts, he delves into the world of Sumerian, Babylonian, and Assyrian ghost stories, exploring how these ancient cultures viewed the afterlife and the spirits that inhabited it. Through his work, we gain a deeper understanding of the human experience and our enduring fascination with the supernatural.

Mesopotamian Culture and the Paranormal
The ancient Mesopotamians held a particularly unique view of the paranormal, with their interpretation of death and the afterlife differing significantly from some contemporary Western ideas about spirits and life after death. In Mesopotamian culture, death was viewed as a continuation of existence in the underworld, rather than an end to life. Grave goods were buried with the deceased to be used in the afterlife and communication with the dead was a common practice, often involving dream visitations or necromantic rituals. Professor Finkel reflects on the importance of tomb-building and the burying of objects as a means of ensuring the deceased's well-being in the underworld. He also discusses ancient Mesopotamian practices of exorcism and the crucial role of magic, ritual, and incantation in dispelling malevolent spirits.

World's Oldest Ghost Picture
Ghosts played a significant role in the daily lives of the people of ancient Mesopotamia, as evidenced by their many cultural practices and beliefs. The realm of spirits and ghosts was one full of mystery that required constant vigilance to protect oneself and maintain a harmonious relationship with the supernatural. To this end, rituals were devised and performed to banish or appease spirits and communicate with the dead. The analysis of ancient artifacts has provided invaluable and often surprising insights into the beliefs and practices pertaining to spirits and ghosts in cultures past. Among some of the most extraordinary discoveries is an ancient Mesopotamian tablet bearing what is believed to be the world's oldest depiction of a ghost. This find opens up a new lens through which to view the understanding and interaction with the supernatural in history. The tablet serves as a tangible link between the ancient Mesopotamians and their understanding of the paranormal world that existed alongside their own. This incredible discovery further emphasizes the enduring nature of humanity's fascination with the supernatural and the connections that transcend time and cultural boundaries.

"It's not just about the prisoners, because part of my work I talk about, don't forget that this building has land that it was built on". - Kirsten Honey

Life in Bodmin Jail
During the period when Bodmin Jail was operational, harsh conditions and punishments were prevalent. Many crimes that would seem minor in today's context were met with severe penalties, such as imprisonment or even execution. The society of the time, heavily reliant on agriculture and food production, sought to maintain order and control through the use of these punitive measures. The experience of prisoners in Bodmin Jail was undeniably difficult, and their stories compel us to consider the societal pressures and mental health issues that may have contributed to their criminal activities. Kirsten Honey shared her perspective on the lives of the prisoners in the jail, remarking that understanding the nuances of the justice system of the time is essential to comprehending their individual journeys. She described the public's fascination with stories of the condemned and how that sensationalism perpetuated the harshness of punishments. Kirsten also touched on the harsh prison conditions within Bodmin Jail, including its eerie atmosphere, hard labor, and lack of communication. These elements combined to make a prison stay a truly fearsome experience for inmates.

Infamous Lady: The True Story of Countess Erzsébet Báthory with Kimberly Craft

Infamous Lady: The True Story of Countess Erzsébet Báthory with Kimberly Craft

Joining me today is Professor Kimberly Craft- attorney and legal historian- to explore the life of the 16th-century "Blood Countess" of Hungary, Erzsebet Bathory. Reputed to be both a vampire and the world's worst female serial killer, she allegedly bathed in the blood of her 650 victims. Much has been written about the so-called Infamous Lady, Tiger of Csejthe, and Blood Countess, by the 21st century, the accounts of her life have becomeso fictionalised that the Countess is little more than a caricature. History has painted the Countess as an insane murderess; yet original letters, trial transcripts, and depositions indicate a far more complicated figure- the wife of a national war hero, a mother, generous benefactor, and socialite who routinely attended court and even the King's coronation, just months before her arrest.
For English readers, unfortunately, much of the primary source material about the Countess has remained inaccessible with European researchers having translated it primarily into German or Slovak. Professor Kimberly Craft, has spent years researching facts on the Countess and over a year translating these original European sources into English. Much of the material -the complete trial transcripts, depositions of 306 testifying witnesses, private letters, and the Last Will and Testament-have now been fully translated into English and are available, for the first time, to the general public.
Based on this newly-found and translated source material, translated into English for the first time, we were able to dive into the actual life and trial of Countess Bathory and explore the woman, the myth and legend as well as the complexities to her nature.

Unknowing Australia

Unknowing Australia

Joining me today is Stacey Ryall the creator of Unknowing Australia. Unknowing was conceived in 2022 as an independent zine that aims to highlight the haunted locations, dark history and deep mythology of Australia. It was created after identifying a gap in paranormal programming and content from ‘down under’, despite a rich history of mysterious activity.

Stacey has explored many locations across the US and Europe, leading her to seek out and discover the relatively 'unknown' - but equally fascinating - locations and lore in her own country.

Experimenting With Spirit Communication

Experimenting With Spirit Communication

Joining me today is Rachel Hayward. Rachel grew up on the River Thames at Cookham Lock where her father was a Lock Keeper for nearly 30 years. Not only was this an unique experience but the house itself was haunted and was the topic of her book The Lock House Haunting.

When she moved to Gloucestershire in the early 1990s it was not long before she became involved in the Paranormal again and as a result formed the team ROPE (Researchers of Paranormal Events. ) Although small the team have collaborated extensively with other teams including South Bristol Paranormal and believe in honesty,  integrity and respect.  They have also been running an unusual experiment combining Zenner Cards with a Ouija Board for the last five years with some intriguing results...

A Haunting In Villisca: The Axe Murder House

A Haunting In Villisca: The Axe Murder House

On a quiet residential street in Villisca sits an old white frame house. On a dark evening, the absence of lights and sounds are the first indication to visitors that this house is different from the other homes that surround it.

Upon closer inspection, you'll notice it's doors and windows are tightly closed and covered. An outhouse in the backyard suggests that this house does not occupy a place in the 21st century but somehow belongs in another era or another story.

A weather-beaten sign hanging from the decrepit front porch warns rather than welcomes.

It is the "Murder House."

The walls still protect the identity of the murderer or murderers who bludgeoned to death the entire family of Josiah Moore and two overnight guests on June 10th, 1912.

To some, it seems to be speaking.

In Search Of The Paranormal With Richard Estep

Joining me today is Richard Estep...a paramedic and paranormal investigator who hails from Great Britain, and who currently makes his home in the United States. His work features on the TV series “Haunted Case Files,” “Haunted Hospitals,” and “Paranormal 911.” When he's not travelling the world collecting ghost stories and investigating haunted houses, he's writing about those very same places, or having fun writing fiction with a distinctly supernatural theme to it.

Animals And The Paranormal With Richard Sugg

Animals And The Paranormal With Richard Sugg

In today's podcast I am joined by Richard Sugg as we dive into the question that surrounds animals and the supernatural.

From tales of animal ghosts, to how we investigate in the paranormal as well as the place that animals hold within history as conduits to the spirit realm... we discuss it all alongside sharing examples of incredible paranormal activities and powers that animals seem to possess as we examine Richard's book:  'A Singing Mouse at Buckingham Palace: and other amazing animal stories from the nineteenth century.' Yes: mice really can sing; and in 1843 one captured in a London slum was summoned to give a command performance for Queen Victoria’s children.

In today's podcast we explore the challenge that winter posed and how some of these folk customs of the lower classes became a festive pastime as well as meeting some ghosts and goblins along the way....

The Haunting History of The Paris Morgue with Catriona Byers

The Haunting History of The Paris Morgue with Catriona Byers

If you were visiting Paris today, you’d probably find yourself walking past the love padlocks on the Pont des Arts, walking through Notre Dame and a mile on from there you’d be at the Louvre. If you were in Paris in the 1880s, there would be an altogether different attraction that you would almost certainly have found yourself in. The “only free theatre in Paris”, otherwise known as the La Morgue. The morgue first opened its doors to the public in 1804 on Île de la Cité, before moving to a new and larger building behind Notre Dame in 1864, where a memorial now sits. The location of the morgue was no accident: being in the epicentre of Paris and right next to the Seine, the morgue was in a good position to receive both the dead and the living. Many of the bodies, which were picked up off the streets or fished out of the Seine, were unidentifiable, so the public were ostensibly allowed in to help with their identification.

At the time, Paris was changing; it was becoming a more social, less divided city. Sigmund Freud described it in 1885 as a place where, “I don’t think they know the meaning of shame or fear; the women no less than the men crowd round nudities as much as they do round corpses in the morgue”. People of all ages and classes were beginning to socialise on the streets of Paris and in its local attractions. The morgue became one of the places to see and be seen and, since the morgue was open seven days a week, from dawn to 6pm, many Parisian residents became regular visitors right along with the tourists.

Joining me today is historian Catriona Byers who specialises in urban death, policing, medicine and photography from the nineteenth-century to the present day. She’s currently working on a PhD at King’s College London, focusing on the morgues of Paris and New York from 1864-1914. We were able to chat about the history of the morgue and some of the tragic stories of people who passed through there. We also examine how it was more than just a popular attraction as we examine the role it played in modern policing and forensics and more...

Thank you for listening.

The Real Vampires: Death, Terror and The Supernatural with Richard Sugg

The Real Vampires: Death, Terror and The Supernatural with Richard Sugg

The real vampires were not suave, polished, cultivated or rich. They looked like ordinary dead peasants – usually shabby, and often fat. Some of them never drank blood. Others ate apples, nuts, grapes, or green beans. Yet for those who believed in them, vampires were terrifying. So terrifying that they prompted live burials, nervous breakdown, hysterical paralysis and speechlessness. During a real vampire panic, an overworked, underfed community was so terrified that it found the energy to dig up eleven graves, and the wood to burn eleven corpses. Real vampires were so terrifying that the energy of fear they produced actually caused poltergeist attacks. In several cases, they were so terrifying that they quite literally scared people to death. Joining me today to discuss his book, ' The Real Vampires: Death, Terror and the Supernatural' is Richard Sugg as we explore how vampires looked and felt to those in their midst, in worlds where the soul lingered in the house of death for three days, and the dead watched their own funerals from open coffins.

Thank you for listening.

Werewolf For God: The Turbulent Trial of Thiess of Kaltenbrunn with Sarah Blake

Werewolf For God: The Turbulent Trial of Thiess of Kaltenbrunn with Sarah Blake

Like the witchcraft trials as a whole, the trial of supposed werewolves emerged in what is now Switzerland (especially the Valais and Vaud) during the Valais Witch Trials in the early 15th century and spread throughout Europe in the 16th, peaking in the 17th and subsiding by the 18th century. The persecution of werewolves and the associated folklore is an integral part of the "witch-hunt" phenomenon. During the early period, accusations of lycanthropy (transformation into a wolf) were mixed with accusations of wolf-riding or wolf- charming. The 1598 case of Peter Stumpp led to a significant peak in both interest in, and persecution of, supposed werewolves, primarily in French-speaking and German-speaking Europe. Werewolf trials reached Livonia in the 17th century, and would become the most common form of witch-trial in that country. The phenomenon persisted longest in Bavaria and Austria, with persecution of wolf-charmers persisting until well after 1650, the final cases being recorded in the early 18th century. Joining me today to discuss witchcraft and werewolf trials is Sarah Blake from Hushed Up History. As part of this topic we also examine the fascinating case of Thiess of Kaltenbrunn a werewolf trial that stands alone in history....

A Haunted History Of Invisible Women: True Stories of America's Ghosts

A Haunted History Of Invisible Women: True Stories of America's Ghosts

Joining me today are the authors behind the book 'A Haunted History Of Invisible Women: True Stories of America's Ghosts' a book which explores sorrowful widows, vengeful jezebels, innocent maidens, wronged lovers, former slaves, even the occasional axe-murderess - America's female ghosts differ widely in background, class, and circumstance. Yet one thing unites them: their ability to instill fascination and fear, long after their deaths. A Haunted History of Invisible Women offers a unique lens on the significant role these ghostly legends play both within the spook-sseeking corners of our minds and in the consciousness of a nation.

Fairies: A Dangerous History with Richard Sugg

Fairies: A Dangerous History with Richard Sugg

On September 1st 1922 Sir Arthur Conan Doyle published his book, The Coming of the Fairies. With this important anniversary month we are going to be looking at the Cottingley Fairies as well as examining the history of fairy folklore and the changes they have undergone both in terms of aesthetic and perception to explore their darker and more dangerous side.... How dangerous were fairies? In the late seventeenth century, they could still scare people to death. Little wonder, as they were thought to be descended from fallen angels, and to have the power to destroy the world itself. Such beliefs, along with some remarkably detailed sightings, lingered on well into the twentieth century.

In today's episode I am joined by Dr Richard Sugg who wrote the book, 'Fairies: A Dangerous History' as we examine the associations fairies had with witchcraft and black magic, the dead and with ghosts and poltergeists.

Thank you for listening.

The History and Hauntings of Derby Gaol with Richard Felix

The History and Hauntings of Derby Gaol with Richard Felix

Derby has a reputation for being a hotbed of ghostly goings on. Stories of ghostly activities span generations. In fact it’’s difficult to turn a corner in the city without hearing a nerve jangling tale of things that go bump in the night. And you don’t have to go too far to find one such tale. The old gaol in Friar Gate has a particularly gruesome past. Today, all that survives of the original gaol are its cells, which now form part of a working museum which tells the story of its grisly history. Opened in 1756 it replaced one in the Cornmarket and materials from that building were actually used in the construction of the Friar Gate Gaol, which was deliberately sited close to Nun's Green, a place where executions had traditionally taken place. Many a brutal execution took place in the prison, and many others died by other means such as illness and suicide.

Joining me today to discuss the history and hauntings of Derby Gaol is TV paranormal historian Richard Felix- the owner of Derby Gaol.

Thank you for listening.

The Grey Ghost- The Haunting History of the Queen Mary

The Grey Ghost- The Haunting History of the Queen Mary

Internationally recognised, the historic floating hotel and museum attracts thousands of visitors every year. It has also attracted a number of unearthly guests over the years. In fact, some say the Queen Mary is one of the most haunted places in the world with as many as 150 known spirits lurking upon the ship. Over the past 60 years, the Queen Mary has been the site of at least 49 reported deaths, not to mention having gone through the terrors of war, so it comes as no surprise that spectral spirits of her vivid past continue to walk within her rooms and hallways.

In today's episode we explore some of the history, the grandiosity and the ghostly tales that lurk on this magnificent and historic Grey Ghost.

Mummies, Cannibals and Vampires: A History of Corpse Medicine with Richard Sugg

Joining me today is Dr. Richard Sugg the author of many books including the topic of conversation today 'Mummies, Cannibals and Vampires' where we discuss the gory and gruesome history of cannibalism as part of corpse medicine.

Picking our way through the bloodstained shadows of this remarkable secret history, we encounter medicine cut from bodies living and dead, sacks of human fat harvested after a gun battle, skull medicine, the blood-drinking of Scandinavian executions, Victorian corpse-stroking, and the magical powers of candles made from human fat.

Ghosts of Scotland- Tales Deep From Within Castle Walls

Ghosts of Scotland- Tales Deep From Within Castle Walls

A variety of ghosts are to be found in the houses, castle, inns, moors, lochs and ruins of Haunted Scotland. Scotland has always been a divided nation and its history is spattered with the blood of countless conflicts.

Vestiges of Scotland's stormy past are to be found all over the country and nowhere is it more apparent than in the haunted, ruined castles of Scotland.

These ruined fortresses - silent reminders of old and bitter conflicts - stud the Scottish landscape.

From the gentle farmlands of the Central Lowlands to wild Empty lands of Europe's last great wilderness in the country's Northwest, Scotland's abandoned castles stand as sullen witnesses to centuries of conflict and bloodshed, and the ghosts that wander their timeworn corridors and historic rooms are perpetual reminders of a violent and stormy past.

Behind the sombre walls of these impressive bastions, Kings and Queens, Lairds and Ladies, Highlanders and Lowlanders, the famous and the long forgotten, continue to inhabit an ethereal domain where old feuds and differences have never died, and where dastardly deeds and ancient discords occasionally cross the centuries to baffle and astonish those who happen to stumble upon their ghostly re-enactments.

In today's episode we explore some of this stormy past and the ghost lore that survives it....

The Empty Chair

The Empty Chair

Roy Jenkins concludes in his biography of Sir Winston Churchill that:

.....Churchill, with all his idiosyncracies, his indulgences, his occasional childishness, but also his genius, his tenacity and his persistent ability (to be) larger than life, was the greatest ever occupant of 10 Downing Street.

Widely considered one of the 20th century's most significant figures, Churchill remains popular in the UK and Western world, where he is seen as a victorious wartime leader. Winston Churchill was more than this though he was a man of transcendental powers. He could, it seems, peer beyond reality. While vague about the hereafter, Churchill always held that “man is spirit,” and believed in a kind of spiritual connection with his forebears. On 24 January 1953, he told his private secretary, John Colville, that he would die on that date—the same date his father had died in 1895. Twelve years later Churchill lapsed into a coma on January 10th. Confidently, Colville assured The Queen’s private secretary: “He won’t die until the 24th.” Unconscious, Churchill did just that.

In this episode we explore locations associated with Churchill as well as Churchill the man and his links with the supernatural.
