004- Is Executive Dysfunction Causing Conflict in Your Relationship?

004- Is Executive Dysfunction Causing Conflict in Your Relationship?

Summary/Abstract

Her Brain Connection Lab is a place for people with autistic ADHD relationships to come together and talk about their experiences. Every first Thursday of the month starting June 1, Ali and Carole Jean will be hosting a live event on XXO Connect.

They will be providing topics to discuss but also leave room for people to talk about their own issues. For example, Ali and Carole Jean will be talking about how hormones affect neurodiverse women and time blindness. This is a place for people to come and laugh, share experiences, and learn from each other.

Ali and Carole Jean are both direct communicators who own their own businesses, so they understand the importance of direct communication. However, they also recognize that communication styles between partners may be different than between coworkers or friends. Carole Jean also mentions executive dysfunction, which is when someone has difficulty organizing tasks and completing them. In her case, it results in piles of things in her home, which causes a little shame since she can do so many other things. They discuss how to communicate differently with their partners, and how to work through the shame of executive dysfunction.

The conversation is about how to navigate executive dysfunction in relationships. It starts by discussing how partners can become frustrated when tasks are not done in the same way they would do them. Executive dysfunction can be tricky to work around, as people with ADHD may struggle to maintain consistency. The conversation then moves to talking about thinking traps, which are patterns of thinking that can lead to conflict in relationships. Both partners may have similar or different thinking traps, and by identifying them it can help to reduce conflict. Lastly, the conversation talks about how common it is for people with ADHD to become blind to an object they just had in their hands, which is a big part of the ADHD brain.

001- Who is Her Brain Connection Lab for, How we help, and an Opportunity to join our Survey

If you are a therapist, counselor, or coach and you help couples of all kinds with different minds, this is for you.

Hi, I'm Dr. Ali Arena and I'm Carole Jean Whittington and we are both late identified helping professionals.  (Ali is ADHD and Carole Jean is Autistic/ADHD)  After hearing from so many of our counseling and coaching peers that there just wasn't any information or guidance on how to work with couples where the woman was autistic or ADHD, we knew we had to share what we created.

Together we developed The Neurodiverse Communication EcoSystem to give helping professionals a methodology and toolkit to confidently guide their neurodiverse couples to authentic and thriving relationships so that the NeuroDistinct partner didn't end up in Burnout due to camouflaging.

And so that both partners better understand their communication styles and have an immediate De-Escalation Protocol for those highly charged conflicts and so much more.

We knew we had to share what we created together, The Neurodiverse Communication EcoSystem.

CJW: Ali and I want to give helping professionals a methodology and toolkit to confidently guide their neuro-different couples to authentic and thriving relationships so that the neurodistinct partner doesn’t end up in Burnout due to masking and camouflaging.

Ali: And so that both partners better understand their communication styles and have an immediate De-Escalation Protocol for those highly charged conflicts and so much more.
