The Significance of the Great Resignation

The Significance of the Great Resignation

To date the Great Resignation has driven millions of people to quit their jobs, so what is the actual cause of this historic shift? On this episode of the HRart of It podcast, Samm interviews repeat guest Jeff Harry who explains that this problem has been fueled by organizations that continue to fall back into old ways of thinking. Numerous factors including burnout, toxic masculinity and leadership only focused on short term gains are just a few of the major factors at the heart of this crisis.

Organizations need to step up and show they truly care for their employees or be left behind in this new working world that is demanding respect, flexibility and genuine joy. Find the show notes at www.hrartcenter.com.

Awakening Your Intuitive Guidance

Awakening your intuitive guidance means recognizing your intuition and then following it. Sounds easy, right? Well, not necessarily. On this episode of the HRart of It podcast, Samm and Dave talk about this growing process in depth. Sometimes listening will be easy, but other times, you'll experience a situation that is a lot more complicated and presents you with a decision that makes it a lot harder to follow that little voice. Moving Forward As People-Driven Leaders

Moving Forward As People-Driven Leaders

It’s hard to go anywhere nowadays without seeing a “now hiring” sign. The other day I pulled into a drive thru at a local Burger King, where a now hiring sign was posted on the intercom begging customers to be patient and kind to the staff that was working. It begs the question, why do these employees show up while others have been abandoning their positions all together? Could it have anything to do with their manager’s leadership style? It seems like a no-brainer - we’ve talked about leadership styles for decades. However, our discussions have typically been from a more theoretical perspective, and now is the time to talk about them from a survival perspective. Who must we be as leaders to cultivate an organizational culture that is worthy of the energy being expended by all parties needed. In this episode, I am joined by leadership expert, Jodi Woelkerling to discuss the three types of leaders and why people-driven leaders are the way forward. Intuitive Leadership

Intuitive Leadership

Intuition is a game-changing leadership skillset, but what is intuition exactly and how does it manifest in the workplace? We kick off Season 3 of the HRart of It podcast with this conversation all about intuitive leadership. Samm is joined by the literal voice of The HR Intuitive, Dave Chiaverini, to discuss the intuitive leaders they've encountered as well as the newest workforce generation and how they tap into their intuition. Could it be that the workforce to come is perhaps more attuned intuitively than generations before? And, when it comes to recruiting and hiring for culture fit, isn’t it intuition driving those decisions? Join us for this episode of the HRart of It podcast! Safety at Home and Work with Sabrina Osso

Safety at Home and Work with Sabrina Osso

Sabrina Osso, Founder and CEO of OSSO SAFE, joins us on the podcast this week to discuss the inseparable connections between workplace violence and home violence. Following the recent violent workplace events in both Georgia and Colorado, this is a lesson we all need right now. “If we want to make public spaces safe, including the workplace… we must make home safe first.”

Our workplaces can harbor both victims and abusers, so as workplace leaders, how can we do the all-important job of truly supporting our employees? Though our culture may encourage us to turn a blind eye to uncomfortable situations, Osso explains why that’s just not an option and how we can move forward in addressing those concerns. Listen now to learn more.

TRIGGER WARNING: This episode contains talk of violence and abuse.

Checking Your Organization's Dude Privilege with Jeff Harry

In 2020, female unemployment reached double digits for the first time since 1948, when the Bureau of Labor Statistics started tracking women's joblessness (Source). This is simply one statistic that highlights the continue inequity experienced by women. In this episode, Jeff Harry shares how our working world has come to rely on masculine leadership traits that are simply not healthy in excess. We are in desperate need for balance from both realms of masculine and feminine leadership. To obtain this balance, we must talk about what we have come to celebrate when it comes to leadership and ego.

Chapter Chats: Untamed (Week Five)

Chapter Chats: Untamed (Week Five)

In this episode, we wrap up our Chapter Chats series by debriefing the final 70 pages of Untamed by Glennon Doyle. Samm shares her last three takeaways from these final pages. These takeaways include how our emotions are actually signals from the body to dive deeper and how we frequently choose "ineffective solutions" - choosing to eat or drink rather than dig. Glennon brings back the old Staples' commercial easy button and Samm is inspired to chat about the opportunities that present themselves when we finally gain momentum in our connected paths. But Samm's final takeaway really hits home, as she is fully transparent about the realities of love and marriage.

Chapter Chats: Untamed (Week Four)

Chapter Chats: Untamed (Week Four)

In this episode, Samm continues unpacking Untamed by Glennon Doyle. In these 70 pages, Samm finds herself pushed outside her comfort zone and in the depths of the pool of vulnerability. When it comes to personal growth and vulnerability it is a continual evolution, as we reach a new level of comfort we are then challenged to go deeper. Samm touches on the most intimate relationships of our lives, the human filter that seems to be lacking lately, and the broad need for all of us to unlearn.

Chapter Chats: Untamed (Week Three)

Chapter Chats: Untamed (Week Three)

In this episode, it got real as Samm read the next 70 pages of Untamed by Glennon Doyle. It was almost as if Glennon's words jumped off the page and materialized in her life. The words that specifically materialized all spoke strongly to the mindset regarding parenting. Alluding to this somewhat infamous model we believe we must be for our children. Samm questions if this model of perfection is ultimately doing a disservice to our children by trying to protect them from the messiness and sometimes terrifying aspects of life that they will inevitably have to face someday.

Hear the three passages from these pages that really hit home for Samm. Including why we should embrace feeling our pain, what being Connected (or what Glennon calls Knowing) truly feels like, as well as expanding the definition of a meditative state. Samm is also moved to share when she first encountered hearing whispers to trust herself again. This episode continues to highlight takeaways from Untamed that can only be described as "liquid gold."

Chapter Chats: Divine Compensation (Week Three)

In this episode, we conclude our discussions on the second book in this Summer’s Chapter Chat series, The Law of Divine Compensation by Marianne Williamson. This week, Samm and Josh discuss a variety of powerful messages regarding abundance. Josh shares how the common belief that people carry regarding finite opportunities, while Samm presents the extreme opposite of people overwhelmed by the magnitude of opportunities, hear how they find common ground in both scenarios. Samm shares how judgement of others sometimes causes the most harm to ourselves and Josh shares how meditation has shown up in his life. The conversation concludes reiterating the absolute importance of living in alignment when it comes to matters of manifesting abundance.

Chapter Chats: Divine Compensation (Week Two)

In this episode, we continue our discussions on the second book in this Summer’s Chapter Chat series, The Law of Divine Compensation by Marianne Williamson. This week, Samm and Josh discuss the feelings of guilt commonly associated with earning money for doing what you love. Josh shares why he believes that people use this guilt as an excuse. Samm shares about surrendering spiritually to keep the ego at bay and once again reiterates the ego's agenda to limit us and fuel fear. Samm and Josh also discuss the concept of answering your calling, and what living and working actually looks like with a calling. There's no doubt that this book delivered takeaway after takeaway, join this dive deep into The Law of Divine Compensation.

Chapter Chats: Divine Compensation (Week One)

In this episode, we begin our discussions on the second book in this Summer’s Chapter Chat series, The Law of Divine Compensation by Marianne Williamson. These book convos will be led by Samm and her husband, Josh. The two couldn’t be more different when it came to matters of money when they were first married in 2009. This week they begin sharing their initial reactions to the book including the obvious very different approach Marianne presents when it comes to obtaining the abundance you seek in life. If you are searching for the secret formula to making money? Well, then this is not the book, continue searching. Instead this book is filled with powerful lessons about shifting to a higher vibration, so that we are naturally aligned to receive all that we’ll ever need in life.

In this episode, we conclude our discussions on The Slight Edge. Join us for conversation as we unpack the final pages. Together, we share our final takeaways that primarily focused on the idea of habits. How do you in fact instill a new powerful habit into your life? How long does it take to master and go on autopilot? Plus, did you know that some of the best habits for you may seem weird to the outsider? Learn how reading these final pages solidified this last concept for Samm.

The Significance of Gratitude

The Significance of Gratitude

When I first started podcasting, my first five episodes ever were titled "The Grateful Showcase." Each episode highlighted an online entrepreneur that I had come to admire and was actively following, I referred to them collectively as my Mental Advisory Board. This started an annual tradition and my annual gratitude practice. When I began this practice, I could have never imagined the significance it would play years later in my life. In this episode, I share with you the lesson that I have learned about the significance of gratitude. Our opportunities to express genuine gratitude should not be taken for granted. As you will hear, I learned the hard way that opportunities for gratitude are never guaranteed.

My Medical Qigong Story

My Medical Qigong Story

For the last year, as I have been slowly sharing how Medical Qigong has been changing my life, the one question that keeps coming up is, how exactly did Medical Qigong come into my life? To be honest, it's a fair question. It's not like I've been chatting about an interest in Traditional Chinese Medicine since I was a young girl and my recent sudden immersion into Eastern Philosophy justifies some sort of explanation. In this episode, I'll share my winding path to Medical Qigong. My hope is that my path might inspire or affirm the one you currently are on.  I know that sometimes amidst the uncertainty of how something exactly fits are also the times where we must embrace the belief in something bigger than ourselves. We need to trust to evolve, to grow.

People Come and People Go

In this episode, I share one of the biggest lessons I have come to learn on my journey of personal growth. It is also one of the hardest lessons to learn and accept. If you are on the path to raise your vibration then this will be a lesson you will learn as well. It might actually be a lesson that you've already learned but not fully understood the why behind its occurrence. Join me as I share with you what I have to understand when it comes to why people come and go while we are in a growth mindset.

I Severely Underestimated the Effects of Stress

My wellness journey has been a constant challenge over the last decade. When I finally got down to the root cause, I discovered that my state of unwell was caused by stress. I had no idea how my overly active stress levels were destroying my body. I had no idea when we use the term "stress" what it actually truly represented. In this episode, I share with you my journey, frustration and ultimate lesson - that I am actively using to healing myself.

This actual statement was said to me maybe three years ago and I think my brain exploded. In this episode, I want to unpack this lesson. I’ll share with you the story of how this statement came to be said. Then we will chat about the significance of Rome and our inability to articulate it. Then finally we will talk about why we must be present in the journey and less focused on the destination.

I Still Don't Trust Myself

I couldn't wait to share the content for this episode with you - so much so that I recorded it on the drive home (forgive the white noise). In this episode,  I share with you a recent experience that gently reminded me that I still struggle with trusting myself. Despite all the personal and professional development over the last five years, I still cannot trust my intuitive guidance. I even share a blatant sign from the universe that still did not provide enough assurance.

Hiring for Cultural Fit

In this episode, we are chatting about hiring with retention in mind. We are talking about the significance of turnover rates, why you need to make your job descriptions sexy and why canned interview questions might be your retention downfall. But, when it comes to retention sometimes our biggest challenge as an HR practitioner is fear. We are either afraid of what our organizational culture truly is or we know what our organizational culture truly is but we are afraid of what that means.

Here in Pennsylvania, I like to use this metaphor, it's like jumping off a high cliff into a quarry. It's scary and it's exciting, and when you hit the water, you are going to come up for air and you are going to keep swimming. I've gotten pretty good at deciphering if a client or a friend should take that leap of faith. And, even though I've had a positive experience, I don't advise everyone that it's right for them. Listen as Meredith tells her vision board story and what actually manifested for her. It will give you hope that you too can take that leap and come up still swimming.

During one of my more recent coaching sessions, I was finally able to articulate in a few words how I describe my life before Leadership Arts Associates. One of the things I treasure most about our next guest on The Grateful Showcase is his ability to build relationships. Relationships and connection that run well below the surface. I have had some of the most warming and fulfilled lunch and coffee conversations with this gentleman. Although, it seems like our path to initial connection took an army. It took a series of a friend of a friend, a colleague of a colleague, insisting that we connect for it to finally happen.

If there is one thing that I learned about myself in college it was that I need people for things to make sense. While pursuing a business degree filled with classes on economics and operations management, I struggled to master the concepts surrounding widgets. My only saving grace was the introduction of HR Management Strategic Practices which essentially replaced widgets with people. It was this change that made all the difference, I got it when we were talking people. I also fully understood how the concepts expanded to take into account that we are dealing with people not widgets, something that doesn't always come so easy for operations driven individuals. DK was that for me and the non-profit sector.

44 | My Truth of Today

I think back to my childhood and how loosely, as a child, I would use this term about hating people, and there's some people who do some awful things. They do awful things, but to truly hate someone is bringing up an emotion within you that is just so dark and so heavy. When I see it being present in any form, my heart breaks and my heart breaks for the person who is feeling the hate and unable to see it through a lens of love. It makes me concerned and worried about where that path is going to take them.

I was the girl that cried all the time as a reaction to anything, because almost everything was just so overwhelming in regards to emotions that all I could do was cry. That was the only way I could process it, especially as a little girl. And then, as life went on, I taught myself that it was a sign of weakness and so I needed to toughen up, and pretty much my goal for majority of my life was don't cry. And if you do you gotta go hide somewhere so no one ever sees you crying because that means you're weak and incapable of handling life. That was the story that I told myself.

39 | Leadership is Art because of VISION

39 | Leadership is Art because of VISION

Part of being a leader, and this is one of the things that I believe is so different between a manager and a leader, is that a leader has to have the ability to see the vision, the vision for the organization, the vision for the team, and if they can't, it affects their ability to lead, so not only do you have to be able to know and understand the vision, you have to be able to understand it at a level that you can align with it and know at your core if you believe that you can align with it. In this episode, we explore how vision is the #5 reason as to why Leadership is Art.
