Equipping our Children for Cultural Engagement (with Kelsey Reed)
As Christian homeschool parents, it is easy to feel overwhelmed by the constant onslaught of news and cultural issues our families and children face each day. How can we equip our children to engage with the culture in a way that rests in the Truth of Scripture and confidence in the character of God? How can we teach them to think through culture with calm discernment, not anxiety? Kelsey Reed is the news coach with God's WORLD News, and she joins us on this podcast bonus episode to share her vision for equipping parents for this vital role of discipleship.

The Light Before Christmas (with Marty Machowski)
The Light Before Christmas (with Marty Machowski)
Marty Machowski's new 4-week Advent Devotional, The Light Before Christmas, combines devotions on the theme of light and darkness with the story of eleven-year-old Mia and her grandmother as they prepare for Christmas. Grandma loves to share her faith, especially at Christmas time, and although she is blind, she can see the light of Jesus shining bright and helps Mia—and children of all ages—to do the same.
In this week's special bonus Advent episode, Pastor Machowski himself reads us chapter 1 of his new book! This is an episode to enjoy with your kids for sure. Click here to add this book to your family's shelf this Christmas season!
Every year, Mia loves to spend the month of December with Grandma getting ready for Christmas. This year, they read a special devotional, The Light Before Christmas, together. Machowski brings families into their devotional time, sharing the story of Christmas. Through a Bible study of light and darkness, readers will discover how the theme of light weaves its way through the Christmas story and God’s plan of salvation.
The Light Before Christmas contains thirteen devotionals—three for each of the four weeks of Advent and one more for Christmas. Each devotional includes a Scripture for the day, an object lesson, a question to discuss as a family, a song to sing together, and a prayer. Pelvic Health: pelvic prolapse, diastasis recti, and other common pelvic floor challenges (with Dr. Meghan O'Hara)
Pelvic Health: pelvic prolapse, diastasis recti, and other common pelvic floor challenges (with Dr. Meghan O'Hara)
⚠ In today’s episode we’re going to be talking about issues surrounding female health, particular pelvic floor dysfunction. If you usually listen to the podcast episode with little ones listening in, I just wanted to give a heads up that we will be discussing anatomy and having a frank conversation. This is probably one to listen to with earbuds. ⚠
It’s a bit of a cultural joke that moms can’t jump or laugh without a little bladder leakage. But it’s actually no laughing matter. Not only that, but the symptoms associated with a weak pelvic floor can be a lot more painful and embarrassing than just peeing when you laugh.
After my own experience with pelvic pain, incontinence, and pelvic prolapse, I became a bit passionate to talk more openly about this neglected topic. And when I started opening up about it, so many mamas started replying! “I’m not the only one?!” was a common reply. When I let folks know about this interview, I probably got more email replies and social media DMs with questions and comments than any other topic! That surprised me, but it probably shouldn’t have.
We may not be able to get to all those questions today, but I hope this conversation first of all just helps people know they aren’t alone. I had felt so embarrassed and ashamed like there was something wrong with my body alone, and it was a relief to realize how common (if hidden) these issues really are.
Second, I hope you can come away with some practical tips and solutions to begin your own process of healing. I also hope it encourages other moms to get help as needed. Our bodies are strong and powerful and have nurtured babies and (if you’re listening to this podcast) are now educating the next generation. It is worth it to take the time to protect our bodies, to help them heal, and to help them stay strong.
Finally, I hope having this conversation just right out in the open, in your earbuds, on the internet, starts to take just a little bit of the sting of the awkward out of this incredibly important conversation. The more we normalize these discussions, the easier it will be for moms to get the care we all need.
So. There’s my big long introduction and the WHY behind this episode. Be sure to listen to today's conversation with Dr. Meghan O’Hara, PT, DPT, COMT, PRPC!

Modern Miss Mason (with Leah Boden)
Modern Miss Mason (with Leah Boden)
This conversation with Leah Boden (whom you likely recognize from Modern Miss Mason) was such a treat! Leah shared how she found Charlotte Mason while looking for a British influence in homeschooling, and how that discovery brought such joy to their home education journey. We chat about the joys and challenges of homeschooling, and she gives tips for helping the day run smoothly. She also has some wonderful encouragement for prioritizing wonder and delight, not only in the early years of education, but even as our children grow older.

Beauty in our Homeschools: Handbook of Nature Study, Outdoor Hour Challenge, and Fine Arts (with Shirley Vels and Tricia Hodges)
Beauty in our Homeschools: Handbook of Nature Study, Outdoor Hour Challenge, and Fine Arts (with Shirley Vels and Tricia Hodges)
As homeschool moms we can often get into a "get it done and check the boxes" mode. We have so many responsibilities and pulls on our time, and it's way to easy to give up on beauty in our homeschools. Prioritizing all those extra beautiful things just feels too overwhelming. But is it important and valuable to prioritize these elements of beauty in our homeschool? Might, in fact, those elements of beauty (like nature study and fine arts) actually be one of the most important relational elements in our home education?
Today's guests answer with a resounding YES! Tricia Hodges is a returning guest to the podcast, and she is joined today by her friend (and colleague at Nature Study Homeschool) Shirley Vels. Both veteran mamas with homeschool graduates, Shirley and Tricia have an important long-term perspective to share with us today. Plus, I learn that The Handbook of Nature Study isn't as intimidating as I thought it was: https://naturestudyhomeschool.com/the-handbook-of-nature-study-book/ref/7/(aff link)

Hop, Skip, and a Rhyme: Listening Well and Delighting in the Beauty of Words (with Megan Andrews)
Hop, Skip, and a Rhyme: Listening Well and Delighting in the Beauty of Words (with Megan Andrews)
Few things communicate "homeschool family" like stacks of read alouds, overflowing shelves, and library cards filled to bursting. Most of the homeschoolers I know love words, but sometimes we are at a loss how to teach our young children how to wisely approach the books and poetry they're reading. Ought we to set them free with stacks of books and nary a bit of formal literary instruction? Ought we to drill them with stacks of worksheets identifying literary forms? Or might there be a better option all together?
Today's guest, Megan Andrews from Center for Lit, not only is a lover of words herself, but she also loves to teach the joys of literature to young students. She and I discuss the big questions and ideas we should be communicating to our children as we explore the literary world together. She also gives some specific tips for teaching poetry to our young learners. Plus, you'll hear all about her new picture book, Hop, Skip, and a Rhyme: Literary Devices for Young Writers. Megan's ebullient conversation is an absolute delight, so don't miss today's episode!

Life Giving Motherhood (with Min Hwang)
Life Giving Motherhood (with Min Hwang)
Min Hwang's gracious, Christ-focused encouragement brings beauty and joy to my Instagram feed. Whether sharing her own artistic endeavors, Charlotte Mason homeschooling tips, or Biblical living encouragement, Min always has wise words to share. Thus, I'm delighted to bring our recent conversation to you! I pray it blesses you as much as it did me.
Here's an excerpt from our conversation: "I think it's that same concept where I am so thankful. We have nothing to worry about. We have nothing to be anxious for, nothing to fret about, because everything is completed. On the cross, Jesus finished it. I have no more check boxes I need to check off. He checked them all off for me and that liberates me, therefore, with joy to be able to now do what I see my Father doing. I feel like a lot of things that wear me down, a lot of activities and flurry of must dos or should dos that I tend to bog myself to out with are really not up to and should dos."

Musical Education for Young Children (with Elizabeth Nixon)
Musical Education for Young Children (with Elizabeth Nixon)
This was such a fun conversation for me! I see Elizabeth each week on the computer screen as Isaac and I sign in for his Clap for Classics! live class on Tuesday mornings. Her musical enthusiasm brings loads of joy to our homeschool day. And it's been fun to get to know her as grown-ups, too, through the joy of social media and Voxer.
That made it even more delightful to chat with her on Zoom all by myself, and I can't wait to share this conversation with you all! We discussed why musical education is important for our little ones, the value classical music brings to the early years, and Elizabeth even shared some musical activities you can do with your kids today.
Plus, if you listen to the podcast you'll get a sneak peak (well, sneak listen) to the brand new Clap for Classics! podcast, which I know will become a favorite with your whole family.

A Common Arts Education in Our Classical Homeschool (with Chris Hall)
A Common Arts Education in Our Classical Homeschool (with Chris Hall)
Hang around with Classical and/or Charlotte Mason educators, and you'll probably hear about the Liberal Arts pretty quickly. You'll likely even hear discussion about including the Fine Arts in our homeschools. But, what about the Common Arts? What does it look like to include the Common Arts in our education, and why are they important?
Today's guest Chris Hall has not only written the book on the subject, but he also is embodying the truths about which he wrote. I loved this conversation, and was even a little surprised (and delighted) by how often the conversation returned to themes like connection and community.
Regardless what style homeschooler you would label yourself, this is a conversation you will not want to miss! But, word of caution: you may end up being seriously challenged as well!

Today we’re doing something totally different; I’m a little nervous! To kick off Season 5 we’re doing a little Ask-Me-Anything Listener Questions episode. These are questions y’all emailed or sent via social media. And to help me out (and make sure I’m being real with you guys) I have my daughter, Emma, here on the mic with me.
If you’re new around here, you can meet Emma, me, and the rest of the family here.
Your Listener Questions:
What are your thoughts on dating?
I want to hear the story of how you and your husband met and fell in love!
State or Private college?
I have 3 children that I am homeschooling and I work part-time. This is our 4th year homeschooling. It has not been easy, but it is totally worth it. My question is how can I continue to keep my children engaged in their subjects while homeschooling them. They are older now, and I have to be creative as of late. How would you approach this matter?
My conversation with Jen about successfully working while homeschooling
Raising Lifelong Learners with Colleen Kessler
Your (Modern) Morning Basket: Morning Time and “Us-schooling” (an interview with Pam Barnhill)
5. What has been your favorite read aloud with your kids? And how do you structure reading books your oldest may like the best with having younger ones who may not be ready yet? Reading before bedtime separately? Or rereading when the younger one is ready? What about series?
A few of our recent favorite family read-togethers:
Book of Dragons, E. Nesbit
Stories from the Faerie Queen, Mary Macleod
Animal Farm, George Orwell

Have you missed one of the previous posts or audioblogs in the Homeschool Generations series?
Read Part 1 to hear my personal story and experience as a 2nd-generation homeschool mom of 5. Read Part 2 and be encouraged by the hard-won wisdom and long-term perspective from 6 veteran homeschool moms (some of whom began homeschooling when it was still new and viewed with suspicion). Read Part 3 to hear from other second-generation homeschool moms as they share stories from their own education and how they’re doing things differently (or similarly) with their own children today.
Today in Homeschool Generations: Part 4 we will share advice for the new homeschool parent just embarking on this adventure, and communicate some of our hopes for the homeschool generations of the future.

Introduction to Dante and The Divine Comedy (with Kristen Rudd and Wesley Callihan)
Introduction to Dante and The Divine Comedy (with Kristen Rudd and Wesley Callihan)
Introduction to Dante and The Divine Comedy with Kristen Rudd and Wesley Callihan (LIVE Webinar Replay)
Don't be Daunted by Dante! Beginners welcome as we discuss Dante and his Divine Comedy. 100 Days of Dante Starts September 1! Enjoy this webinar replay for a helpful introduction, then read along with #100daysofdante: http://100daysofdante.org/
One of the greatest literary works of the Medieval era (if not the greatest), Dante’s Comedy can be intimidating for beginners. The imagery is often bizarre and at times disturbing. The allusions and themes are often difficult for modern readers to grasp the first time through. Those few brave souls who attempt Inferno sometimes grow weary and don’t attempt to complete the full poem, thus abandoning themselves in a hellish unfinished story!
But do not “abandon all hope, ye who enter here!”
In this webinar we discuss:
Who is Dante, when did he live, and why did he write the Comedy?
What is the Comedy's place in literary history?
Why is Dante worth reading today?
What in the world is going on here? What themes should we be looking for as we read Dante's Comedy? (hint: LOVE)
How can we avoid getting burned out in hell (Inferno), persevere through Purgatorio, and enjoy the full radiance of Paradiso?
and MORE!
Let this be the year you begin your journey with Dante. You don’t have to read alone.
Join Kristen Rudd and read the entire Comedy 1 canto at a time beginning September 1: https://www.facebook.com/groups/100daysofdante/

Homeschooling for College Credit (with Jennifer Cook-DeRosa)
But, what are we going to do about college?! Today's guest brings her experience as a homeschool mom, college administrator, advisor, and teacher to the conversation about homeschooling for college credit. I loved Jennifer's encouragement and down-to-earth approach, and especially her reminder that there is no one-size-fits-all model for this homeschool high school and college/career journey. This is a conversation you'll want to listen to today and then to save and listen to again as you consider choices for your homeschool teens!

This was a delightful conversation with Carrie Brownell, fellow 2nd-generation homeschooling mom of 5. I absolutely loved Carrie’s honesty and vulnerability. MoneyTime: Financial Literacy for Kids Made Easy (with Neil Edmond)
MoneyTime: Financial Literacy for Kids Made Easy (with Neil Edmond)
You may have taught your child the foundations of personal finance but they’re going to need to be familiar with bigger concepts such as debt, borrowing, mortgages and investing basics if they’re going to get ahead financially. It may sound advanced but kids are hungry to understand how the world around them works. By teaching your child these key financial concepts you’re giving them the head start in life they need.
When children understand how the financial system works and how to use it to their advantage they’re able to feel confident about money and the future.
Are you looking for an online financial literacy course for your homeschool? MoneyTime will teach your child all the things you wish you had been taught about money.
That’s why I’m so excited to share today’s interview with Neil Edmond, founder of MoneyTime, on this week’s Homeschool Conversations podcast episode! A big thank you to MoneyTime for sponsoring this episode and post.
Don’t miss your chance to get 25% off annual memberships of this great resource in the MoneyTime Summer Sale. It is definitely worth checking out for homeschool families looking for a financial literacy course for their tweens and teens.

WonderFull: Ancient Psalms Ever New (with Marty Machowski)
WonderFull: Ancient Psalms Ever New (with Marty Machowski)
Even your youngest child may be familiar with familiar passages like Psalm 23. But WonderFull: Ancient Psalms Ever New by Marty Machowki enables young readers, parents, and whole families explore the Psalms more deeply.
Our family already loved other Bible study resources by Marty Machowski, and when I saw his new book about the Psalms I was so thrilled! WonderFull is not only an engaging introduction to the themes and structure of the Psalter for beginners, but it enables readers of all ages to see connections within the Psalms themselves and to see how the Psalms individually and as a whole point to Jesus.
I am so thrilled Marty agreed to be a guest on the Homeschool Conversations podcast! We discuss why he began writing books for children, how the Psalms can help us learn to pray, encouragements for parents as we disciple our children, the power of the Gospel, and more. I know you'll be encouraged by this conversation!

Classical Charlotte Mason Homeschooling (with Adrienne Freas)
Classical Charlotte Mason Homeschooling (with Adrienne Freas)
In our final regular episode of Homeschool Conversations Season 3, I’m joined by Adrienne Freas, another one of the lovely guest suggestions I received from Karen Glass. Adrienne has experience as a Classical Charlotte Mason homeschooling mom, and has also worked to implement these ideas in charter school programs. Our conversation touched on topics like the Trivium as curriculum and pedagogy, the role of picture study and nature study in developing contemplation, and the realities and challenges of homeschool motherhood. I hope this conversation is an especial encouragement to you all as you transition from the end of one homeschool year into planning for the next!

Living Latin Lessons in Our Homeschool (with Angela Reed)
Living Latin Lessons in Our Homeschool (with Angela Reed)
Have you wondered about including Latin in your homeschool? We've had both highs and lows in our own family's experience studying Latin, so when Karen Glass recommended I speak with Angela Reed, I was eager to hear her perspective. Angela loves classics and Latin and that joy is evident! She also teaches Latin classes designed especially for Charlotte Mason homeschoolers. Regardless of your educational philosophy (and even regardless of your interest in Latin), I know you will be encouraged by our conversation. Angela made me smile the whole time!

God Made All of Me: Helping Our Children Protect and Appreciate Their Bodies (with Justin and Lindsey Holcomb)
God Made All of Me: Helping Our Children Protect and Appreciate Their Bodies (with Justin and Lindsey Holcomb)
The statistics are sobering. About one in four women and one in six men are or will be survivors of sexual abuse in their lifetime. 34% of perpetrators are family members. 58% are known to the child and family. Only 7% are strangers. Tragically, we know that this can and does occur in local churches and homeschool groups. How can we help our children protect their bodies from those who would seek to harm them? Justin and Lindsey Holcomb join us in this week’s Homeschool Conversations episode to discuss issues of child protection and body image, all in the context of who we are as image-bearers of God. Does this feel awkward to you, or are you unsure where to start or how to have these conversations with your kids? Justin and Lindsey share some great tips and encouragement with us in today’s chat!

Foreign Language Learning at Home (with Anne Guarnera)
Anne says, “we primarily learn languages so that we can relate better to, and serve and learn from, other people.” Watch out…this conversation might change your whole mindset when it comes to language learning at home!
Have you wanted to include a foreign language in your homeschool, but you’re just not sure how? Have you wondered why language learning is even important? Maybe you’ve been entranced by the idea of bilingual education, but that sounds way too complicated for your ordinary homeschooling family life. Well, today’s Homeschool Conversations guest, Anne Guarnera, has a great perspective to share! Anne combines professional expertise with her real-life experience as a bilingual homeschooling mom. My favorite part about this conversation, though, was Anne’s relationship-oriented purpose behind language study!

Conversations, Relationships, and a Charlotte-Mason Education During High School (with Jami Marstall)
Jami Marstall is a Charlotte Mason homeschooling mom of 4, including 2 homeschool graduates! When I was exploring options for podcast guests, I reached out to previous guests Karen Glass and Cindy Rollins for their recommendations. When both of them mentioned Jami as someone I should talk to, I knew she would be a scintillating guest! Our conversations ranged from the joys and challenges of homeschooling to the nitty-gritty of homeschooling (and graduating) a high schooler using a Charlotte Mason approach. This was an absolutely delightful conversation. Jami is a real-life homeschool mom in the trenches right there beside us, but she also has the long-term wisdom that graduating 2 very different students brings. You will be so encouraged by Jami's perspective!

Analogies for All of Us: Thoughts on Classical Conversations and Communicating Well (with Marc Hays)
Many of my friends have found Classical Conversations to be a good option for their families. While CC has not fit with our family's personal or educational priorities, I know so many folks love CC, and several have asked me to include a Classical Conversations perspective on the podcast. Marc Hays is not only a curriculum developer for Classical Conversations, but he's also an old friend. In fact, I once lived with the Hays family for several months and helped care for their newly adopted infant triplets! So when I decided to bring on a guest from the CC world, I knew Marc would be a perfect fit. Our conversations touched on topics like Christian classical education, analogies (and why they matter), and the true purpose of skillful communication. Peacefully Homeschooling (with Jennifer Pepito)
Do you feel the pressure to homeschool in just the right way or to provide a rigorous education no matter what? Do you sometimes find yourself turning your homeschool approach into a perfectionistic competition? Jennifer Pepito joins us today to encourage us to consider the whole child in our home. She reminds us to take some of the pressure off and to consider what is truly most important, lest we wind up with children who may know a lot, but who certainly don’t care a lot.
This is an encouraging conversation for homeschooling parents of all ages, and also includes a special section for parents of preschoolers and kindergartners.

Homeschool High School Math Online (with Dennis DiNoia from Mr. D Math)
Homeschool High School Math Online (with Dennis DiNoia from Mr. D Math)
Today I'm interviewing Dennis DiNoia (aka Mr. D) from Mr. D Math. He has great advice to share about homeschooling high school math, encouraging teens to learn, and utilizing online high school courses to help homeschool parents.
A few years ago I won an Instagram giveaway that changed my daughter's life. Ok, so maybe that's a bit melodramatic. But that was how we were first introduced to Mr. D Math. My daughter is now such a huge fan that we've continued to purchase her online high school math courses from Mr. D Math! Emma has even been known to favorably compare Mr. D Math to Jane Austen, so you know it must be good.
What a delight to be able to chat with Mr. D himself on this week's Homeschool Conversations podcast episode! A big thank you to Mr. D Math for sponsoring this episode.

Story-Formed, Wonder-Filled Homeschooling (with Amber O'Neal Johnston)
I've absolutely loved following Amber Johnston on Instagram. I enjoy seeing pictures of her family exploring the world through travel, reading, and just ordinary family living. I appreciate her reminders that this homeschool mom life we're living is a good gift. So it was such a delight to chat with her for this episode of Homeschool Conversations! We discussed topics like how she came to embrace a Charlotte Mason education; the value of cherishing a slow, gentle childhood; the concept of books as mirrors and windows; and the encouragement that you don't have to figure it all out at once.
