Melanoma detection based using a plenoptic camera and ML algorithms (PlenoISLA project)
#NewScienceTalksSeries
Under the PlenoISLA project, the IT Leiria-branch research team investigated computational methods for skin lesion diagnosis to assist dermatologists and support expert systems. To this end, equipment was developed based on a camera with light field technology. Using cameras with 42-megapixel sensors and a proper array of micro-lenses, this system allows the representation of skin lesions in 3D, facilitating the extraction of new features, beyond 2D. The 3D information extracted from the light fields allowed to improve the performance of computer vision and machine learning algorithms in the evaluation of the cutaneous lesion, judging, not only if it is a benign or malignant cancer, but also the identification of other types of skin lesions.
This project is under the coordination of Sérgio Faria and it is developed by IT Leiria team, in partnership with Centro Hospitalar de Leiria.

Quantum Technologies for security and privacy on vehicular networks (Q.DOT project)
#NewScienceTalksSeries
Q.DOT (Quantum Distribution Oblivious Transfer) aims to contribute to the creation of new technologies for security and privacy, with a main focus on vehicular networks. Q.DOT aimed to explore a new generation of cryptographic technologies, based on the realization of high-speed quantum-enabled oblivious transfer (OT) cryptographic primitive for the statistical analysis of private databases - Privacy-Preserving Data Mining.
Project Q.DOT was developed by the Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT), namely by the Quantum Communications Group, of the Instituto de Telecomunicações – Aveiro (https://www.it.pt/OQCT-Av); by the Quantum Information and Security Group, of the Instituto de Telecomunicações - Lisboa (https://www.it.pt/SQI - Lx); and by CapGemini Engineering.

ISTSat-1 enterprise, the first nanosatellite totally developed in Portugal
#NewScienceTalksSeries
Rui Rocha explains on our podcast the next steps of the ISTSat-1 enterprise, the first nanosatellite totally developed in Portugal. ISTSat-1 is a nanosatellite being developed under ESA’s Fly Your Satellite! program.
“The satellite is in its final stage, cannot be open anymore, and moves on to the vibration tests and to the vacuum chamber, which are the demanding tests to get the ticket to Ariane 6. However, the final integration will be critical. Fingers crossed!"
Rui Rocha is a researcher at the Instituto de Telecomunicações, a Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico - Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (DEEC), and one of the founders of IST NanosatLab.

Deep Cognition Learning for Language Generation (DECOLLAGE project)
#NewScienceTalksSeries
André Martins, recently awarded with an ERC Consolidator Grant, explains in the first episode of "How cool is your science?", the new IT Science Talks Series, what is about DECOLLAGE (DEep COgnition Learning for LAnguage GEneration), the sponsored project.
André Martins is a researcher at the Instituto de Telecomunicações, Vice-President of AI Research at Unbabel, Associate Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon, and alumnus of CMU Portugal. Having already won an ERC Starting Grant in 2017, in the amount of 1.4 million euros, the researcher has now the opportunity to consolidate this research under the hosting of Instituto de Telecomunicações.
