When I ask this question, most of my clients have NO idea to start with, except "Not this."
That's fine! Start there. Knowing what you DON'T want is the start of identifying what you DO want.
The idea of “wanting” something is often accompanied by self-judgement, self-censorship, and shame.
But unless we get clear on what we actually want in life, we will never know how to invest our time, what we need to change, and how to move ourselves toward the life/thing we want.
I believe it’s OK to want what we want. I also think it’s our responsibility to own our desires/wants, and take action to bring them into existence.

If you spend all your time working, providing for your family, doing everything for everyone else, and never taking any time for yourself… I guarantee you will reach a point where you burnout, start hating life, or possibly even wipeout with depression. (Been there, done that, bought the t-shirt.)
Life is meant to involve play and fun. We are meant to ENJOY life as well as work. Work to live, not live to work, yeah? Nearly every client of mine started off with NO joy, play or fun in their life. And it was a major problem.
But when I challenged them about this, and they started prioritising play, making time for enjoyment for its own sake, and GODS FORBID actually putting themselves first occasionally…. THAT is when things really started to shift.
They started smiling more, being more present and less resentful with their family and at work, and finding something to look forward to each day or week.
I don’t care what you do. Bird watching? Flying? Making model tanks out of plastic? Cataloguing worms? Who cares. What matters is you HAVE FUN in your life.

Last week (as I publish this) was R U OK? Day. The day is a global phenomenon, all about asking that simple question "Are You OK?" and starting conversations that can change – and save – lives. It's a day of bringing awareness to suicide and its prevalence, and bringing some old-fashioned connection back to our lives, human to human, to help slow down / zero out the rates of suicide.
In this episode I reflect on the nature of hard conversations. We get scared, we don't know what to do, what to say, or how to approach them, and more than anything, we often shy away from feeling uncomfortable about having hard chats.
It's something I've recently experienced in my own life, as well as via R U OK? Day, and it's something I'm teaching as part of a corporate workshop through the latter part of this year.

Letting Go & Finding Purpose with Jon Alcon

Jon is a coach for men helping them prioritize their biggest assets – themselves. As he says: “After becoming a family man we often put ourselves on the backburner and we end up losing our identity and need to rediscover who we are.”

Among other things, I'm a skateboarder, and I have been for 35 years or so, on and off. In the past year or so my son has taken up skateboarding, and it's given me a reason to get back on the board, roll around at skateparks, and try some old and new tricks. But the most interesting thing for me – apart from rediscovering the joy of skateboarding, and the satisfaction of making a difficult trick – is how much it has given me a new relationship with FEAR.
In this episode I go deep into fear, how it works at a biological level, and what it can do to our experience of life. I also talk about how my son was a massive inspiration for me looking more closely at my fear, and discovering a massive surprise on the other side of my fear.

As the old saying goes, "A picture tells a thousand words." But many of us are using the power of pictures to hurt ourselves, and we don't even know we're doing it.

Are You Lifting Or Limiting Yourself?
Every single day we tell ourselves dozens, hundreds, perhaps even thousands of stories. About ourselves, our abilities, our friends, our family, our colleagues, how good we are (not good enough, perhaps?), whether we fit in, what we should be doing, wearing, buying, eating, drinking, etc etc.
It's exhausting. It's also inevitable - we're hardwired for storytelling.
BUT - and this is a Sir Mix-A-Lot BIG BUT - WE are in charge of the story! We have the power to choose the kind of story we tell ourselves. Is it a story that lifts us up? Or is it a story that limits us? Is it something we can use to help ourselves feel better, more confident, capable, stronger, more resilient, etc? Or is it something that will steal our joy, power, happiness or kindness?

The Peril of Expectations

Present Moment Gratitude. "This."
I have been practising gratitude for YEARS now, and have already talked about this in detail in one of my earliest episodes called "Gratitude (and Suicide)" where I share about the impact gratitude had on my ability to make peace with my Dad's decision to take his own life, and the aftermath.
But on this episode I talk about Present Moment Gratitude, and the impact it has had on my life to move gratitude from something abstract, or "out there" at a specific time in my calendar, to a present moment practice. Bringing my gratitude into the present moment, along with the simple expression "This." has transformed my sense of abundance, joy, happiness and gratitude as a living, breathing way of BEING, rather than an item on my To Do List.

The Other Side of Fear
Among other things, I'm a skateboarder, and I have been for 35 years or so, on and off. In the past year or so my son has taken up skateboarding, and it's given me a reason to get back on the board, roll around at skateparks, and try some old and new tricks. But the most interesting thing for me – apart from rediscovering the joy of skateboarding, and the satisfaction of making a difficult trick – is how much it has given me a new relationship with FEAR.
In this episode I go deep into fear, how it works at a biological level, and what it can do to our experience of life. I also talk about how my son was a massive inspiration for me looking more closely at my fear, and discovering a massive surprise on the other side of my fear.

Are You Overcommitted?
Do you ever feel like you're SPRINTING 100mph just to keep on top of your "to do" list, or to meet all the commitments you've made to others? Do you find sometimes your own commitments get left behind?

My Descent Into Burnout
Today I walk you through my massive descent into burnout, and subsequently depression, that happened just over 10 years ago. I share this, not for self-indulgent reasons, but because I truly believe by sharing my own story, it will help raise awareness broadly of what the inside of depression and burnout look like. More than that, I believe it may help those of you who may be currently suffering, to identify what's going on, and seek help. Or it may help you more clearly identify what's going on in your partner or loved one.
Just a heads-up, I don't spend a lot of time on the solutions, treatments, or what helped me get out of the pit – I intend to cover those in depth and detail on future episodes. I do, however, make it very clear that there are solutions and treatments, and I encourage you to seek help from the links below if you, or someone you love, needs support.

No One Is Coming To Save ME...!
Episode 5 is a kind of "Part 2" to Episode 4, where I shared all about how liberating it can be to acknowledge that no-one is coming to save YOU.
However, after a bit of feedback, and a lot of reflection, I realised that there are some bits missing from that episode, and they are the bits that I set out to get intimate with, as the deep intention of this podcast: messiness and vulnerability.

No One Is Coming To Save You...
In Episode 4, I talk about the concept of personal responsibility, and how the phrase "No one is coming to save you" can actually be a gift. I explore the "V" word, plus how Viktor Frankl's book "Man's Search for Meaning" has a beautiful line about reaction vs response.
