Double Reel

By The Adamsons

A monthly podcast by two film nerds who don't know any better than you but hope you've run out of other things to listen to.

James Adamson is a slightly obsessive armchair fan, giving you his take on the world of cinema. So is James Adamson, his imaginatively named son and co-host. As well as a round up of the films we watched (or tried to watch) in between dealing with daily life, we look into tall tales of potentially great films that never got made, overlooked classics you need to see, and rants about remakes that should never have been made at all.

34.3 The Big Conversation: Best Film Directors Working Today

The Adamsons conclude episode 34 of the monthly magazine podcast for the discerning film nerd with the Big Conversation. This is where we get our teeth into a topic from the world of film in more detail and this month we look at who we think are the best filmmakers working today. All such lists are entirely subjective, and ours is made up of our favourite directors, with a natural bias towards those whose films we've seen the most. Our long list (in no particular order) consists of: Lynne Ramsay Guillermo Del Toro Jordan Peele Alfonso Cuaron Bong Joon-ho Park Chan-wook Alejandro Inarritu Ryan Coogler Ridley Scott Paul Thomas Anderson Denis Villeneuve Matt Reeves Quentin Tarantino Christopher Nolan Steve McQueen Kathryn Bigelow

The first part of this month's episode is out already, and our final part the Big Conversation will be released next week.

We range from the great sequels - Godfather 2, Aliens, Mad Max Fury Road, The Raid 2 to the OK but more of the same sequels - Die Hard 2, X Men 2, French Connection 2 - to the downright awful sequels like Speed 2, Highlander 2, Jaws 3D and Jaws The Revenge. We also ask whether some films are untouchable and shouldn't have a sequel, and what sequels we'd like to see that haven't been made yet.

Double Reel Episode 1: Extraction, Lady Vengeance, Blow Out

Double Reel Episode 1: Extraction, Lady Vengeance, Blow Out

Greetings film nerds - this is where it all began on Double Reel - on episode 1 the content is great but I was still learning the ropes and the sound and presentation are a bit basic. Stick with it, we get better as we go on! First episode of a monthly film podcast by a film nerd who doesn't know any better than you but hopes you're running out of things to listen to.  James Adamson is a slightly obsessive armchair fan, giving you his take on the world of cinema. He takes a look at an underrated classic that deserves a wider audience - Brian DePalma's Blow Out; a tall tale of a great film that never got made - John Carpenter's unrealised Firestarter project. He rants angrily about the unnecessary remake of Total Recall, and shares what it was like to watch Korean classic Lady Vengeance in between changing baby's nappies.
