A Student's Perspective On Bullying

A Student's Perspective On Bullying

After the Central Regional incident some weeks back I decided that it might be a nice idea to do an interview with a middle schooler. It was pretty easy to do because I had a pretty good natural resource in the house and that was my daughter Zoe. Her thoughts didn't surprise me; she hasn't been jaded by the trials of life and still believes that love, joy, peace and patience is the answer. I encourage everyone to listen to this one because we will all learn something. Thanks to Andi Kay for the packet we used. Please take the time to click on the links below to check out her information packet and to listen to the interview I did with Andi last week. Overcoming Bullying Meet Andi Kay

Another Bullying Related Teen Suicide

The superintendent of the New Jersey school district where a 14-year-old freshman died by suicide 48 hours after video of bullying surfaced online has resigned, a day after funeral services were held for teenager. Adriana Kuch was found dead a week from Friday following a premeditated bullying incident in which four school mates allegedly ganged up to either attack the high schooler or record the incident, which was subsequently posted to social media. All four girls involved in the attack on Kuch, who took her own life two days after the Feb. 1 incident at Central Regional High School in Berkeley Township, had already been suspended indefinitely before they were charged Friday in the hallway attack at the school. Please read the links for more information on the brutal attack. Students are protesting and retired teachers have said that this has been going on for years in this district. The Eye That Mocks The Father

The Eye That Mocks The Father

The Spiritual Dimension Of Life Proverbs 30: 17 KJV "The eye that mocketh at his father, and despiseth to obey his mother, the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, and the young eagles shall eat it."  What does this mean in very practical terms? If an individual grows up in life with a mocking and contemptible attitude toward their father and despises to obey their mother they will lose their perception on right and wrong behaviors and even the smallest decisions that need to be made will create confusion in their life. Our relationships with our parents can determine future success for ourselves and as we mature for our families. Honor Your Father and Your Mother is the first commandment that has a blessing attached to it: “That you will live a long full life.” NLT. As we mature the imprint from our upbringing can affect the relationship that should mean the most to us; the one with our parents. When we mock our father and despise our mother we lose our perception on life and may miss many of the blessings that God has for us. Let's Take Anti Bullying 101 To Another Level

Let's Take Anti Bullying 101 To Another Level

Bullying has become epidemic in our schools, and no matter how you slice it, this behavior has gotten out of hand. Teachers, administrators, and parents are all looking to something that will just make the problem go away. There is not one program or intervention that will stop bullying. It takes a concerted effort of teachers, administrators, parents, and students to help create a climate of respect and responsibility. The Anti Bullying 101 podcast has been providing tips and strategies to teachers, parents, and students for the past 5 years and I would like to take the podcast to another level. This would require me to invest more time in its production and promotion. I can’t do this without your help. I ask that you please hit the support button now and become a listener supporter of this podcast. By doing so you will be helping to spread the word about the dangers of bullying and helping victims develop hope and greater resiliency. Thanks for your help and for being such a loyal listener.

Don't Kill The Goose

Don't Kill The Goose

Often we don't consider how important we are to our family and at times our friends. Whether we want to believe it or not we are the goose that lays the golden eggs. We can't become so anxious and impatient for all the eggs that we kill the goose in the process. We need to care for ourselves and help our family care for one another. We also need to teach our children some lifelong skills that will help them manage the stressors of life, manage relationships and develop resiliency as the deal with bullying behavior in their lives. The Holiday Table

The Holiday Table

It never ceases to amaze me how we can believe that an actor/actress on a commercial is really the character he or she portrayed on a sitcom. I was watching TV some years ago and Roseanne Barr was doing a commercial on Retro-TV talking about the importance of having dinner at the “family table.” So the commercial flashed back to her and John Goodman on a Roseanne episode sitting at the dinner table engaged in an argument which was supposed to be funny to the viewer. The point of the commercial was that it doesn’t matter what goes on at the family table as long as you have one. I disagree especially during the holiday season. As a kid, we had a family table. It was a war zone. I’m sure that many people can relate to my family table, and I am sick of calling it that, too. (What is this new term –family table- anyway?) During the holidays we can find ourselves surrounded by people we don't like and kids who are discourteous and disrespectful.  The holiday table is not the time or the place to deal with issues that are to raw to discuss. We need to spend the time nurturing relationships with our friends and those of our extended family over the course of years so when the time comes to break bread we can do so in a loving and kind way. Please take the time to become a listener supporter and help take Anti Bullying 101 to another level. Sportsmanship And The Game Of Life

Sportsmanship And The Game Of Life

My daughter who is twelve participates in a variety of different sports, and activities. She is attending middle school right now and is involved with cheerleading both at the school and community level. What never ceases to amaze me is that every sport hands every participant a book on sportsmanship. In other words how should we treat members of the other team and our fellow teammates? What is even more interesting is that you get the feeling that the behaviors like respect, and responsibility, kindness, caring, and other character qualities are only deemed important when the individual is on public display because they don’t want to make the team look bad. As an example one handbook reads: All students who represent ___________ School on an athletic team are expected to conduct themselves in such a manner as to reflect credit upon ________School. I think what is a concern here are the words; on an athletic team. Suppose you are not on an athletic team? Student’s need to work on reflecting credit upon themselves, that will in tern help credit the school for contributing to the student’s life. Listen in as Jim explains why sportsmanship should be a way of life and not something that is ceremoniously displayed on a field or a court.  Read The Article Get Some Coaching

Husky? Stop The Stigma

Husky? Stop The Stigma

Yes that is me in the picture. Probably eight years old or so. Husky for sure. How did I know? Because everyone told me so. Listen in and read the articles associated with this episode.  Oh yeah, I was an overweight little boy. So much so, that when my mother took me to buy clothes I went to what I thought was a special clothing store for boys like me, fat. Why did I think this? Because when I walked into the store, the opened tie, crossed arm, wrinkled shirt, cigarette smoking salesman, took one look at me from head to toe, looked at my mother, pointed to the back of the store and said, “Husky.” Gee did I feel special, until I discovered that the store I was in was one of the only stores around that sold clothes for fat kids. Sure, I said it, for fat kids, because that’s how I felt like a fat kid, and that’s how I was treated. Special stores for special kids who were fat. My skinny friends bought clothes from all kinds of stores; I was relegated to one store, and one style. I certainly was not one of the cool kids, and at times felt isolated and excluded. You would think adults would know better and after all these years learned that stigmatizing young kids because of size, shape or weight does nothing but impact a child's self concept and esteem. Not so fast, it's still going on. Listen in and discover why one NJ school district is being sued because of the insensitivity of a football coach. My Kid Will Make It

My Kid Will Make It

As a kid the dream was to become a professional baseball player and do it for a living. I am sure that kids today have those same dreams and can see themselves hitting the homerun that wins the World Series or pitching a no-hitter. It was such a fantasy fest and we all did fantasize, but alas none of us made it. We played in and out of uniform, organized and pick up, honed our skills, took batting practice and we all thought we were so darn good, but not good enough. There were some guys in the town that I lived in that were so good that we figured we would be watching them someday playing for the Yankees. Not so. Often kids have so  much undue pressure put on them by parents that they lose their love of just playing the game. Parents have to be more focused on helping their children become responsible adults and people of character.  Let's Teach Our Kid's How To Play Again

The Puzzle Pieces Of Life

The Puzzle Pieces Of Life

Have you ever wondered why your parents did some of the things that they did. I did lots of times. My dad had so many regimented activities that I thought he had a screw lose or something. I’m only going to talk about two here because there are too many to put into one episode of this podcast. As I grew older though I cam to realize that what I learned as a child were the missing puzzle pieces that I needed to stay healthy. Young people today are always searching for their own puzzle pieces. But, when we get older we come to realize that the puzzle pieces were handed to us, we just didn't know what to do with them. Wherever you are in life realize that change is a step of faith and we are all never too old to learn something.

Who Do You Trust?

Who Do You Trust?

School Shooting have been around now for over 20 years. My prayers are and always will be with the victims friends and family's. My question is though how do you address the trauma that kids will experience on an ongoing basis because of what they witnessed in their school. Moreover how do you help students' regain the trust and confidence in their teacher's, principals, and in society in general that they will keep them safe and out of harms way. Truly in every school shooting there are victims that are killed tragically, but there are also victims that remain who are so traumatized that learning can almost become impossible.  The Bully Proof Classroom The Regional Training Center Is Your Kid Being Bullied?

Are We A Bitter Society? Thoughts On The Most Recent Shootings

Are We A Bitter Society? Thoughts On The Most Recent Shootings

So What do we do about school and other shootings? Schools have done what they can to try and quell the fears of parents and teachers by setting up protocols for active shooters. My wife who is a classroom mother had to go through checkpoints in our daughter's school and had to be escorted to her classroom. Yet yesterday Salvador Ramos walked into Robb Elementary School In Uvalde Texas and shot 19 students and 2 teachers killing them. In Buffalo NY on May 14, 2022 13 people were killed in a racially charged incident by Payton Gendron who had a manifesto on a social media platform and identified himself as a white supremacist. Is there an answer? I think we have to first identify the problem in order to come up with a solution. We as a society are becoming more and more bitter. We can't stand our own design and are angry because of who we are, our parents, our environment, our status, and our upbringing. By the way Ramos shot his grandmother before he went over to the school. There is a choice that needs to be made. Oh, I don't doubt that the mental health system in this country needs and overhaul, but in reality we can all choose love not hate, acceptance instead of racism, respect, not rudeness and unkindness, responsibility, not excuses, and above all our country has to learn how to value the differences and choose life not death. Please join me and pray for the families of those who have been killed in these senseless acts of violence and hate.

Social Resiliency/ Take Care Of Yourself

Sometimes in order to be supportive of our kids we need to listen more than we speak. Attention is a commodity and all kids want it but with that attention could come a host of socially related issues. Taking the time to help our children become more socially resilient will help them now and down the road. I have taken the time to curate the article that i have linked below and think that you will find this episode an excellent listen.  I also speak in this episode about the importance of taking care of yourself and becoming more aware of your health and genetics. It is very difficult for victims to forgive, but an angry victim may only seek revenge at a later time on his own. Bullies need to learn how to ask for forgiveness, victims need to accept it. We can be an example by asking for and receiving forgiveness ourselves.

What If The Frankenstein Monster Was Really A Nice Guy?

What If The Frankenstein Monster Was Really A Nice Guy?

Dr. Frankenstein creation was put together with used body parts from corpses that were buried in a graveyard. The head was that of a criminal who was just executed for his crimes by hanging and the brain used was referred to as abnormal. (It was from a murderer) The perfect head (maybe) and the brain they needed. Well suppose that brain wasn’t that of a criminal. Suppose it was the brain of a college graduate who was wrongly executed. Suppose the brain was from a father of three with an IQ of 140. Suppose the head was from a handsome Brad Pitt looking fellow that all the girls just went crazy for. This would make quite a story and today Dr. Frankenstein would be on the cover of Time Magazine showing off his newly created friend. I have created a lesson plan for you to use with this podcast and would encourage you if you are a teacher or maybe even a parent to solicit some answers and try and determine how your student's or children would deal with the differences associated with a laboratory creation today.  Get The Lesson Plan The Power Of Consistency The Teacher's Survival Guide The Peak Performing Teacher

Cooperation and Attitude

Kids are going to disagree whether we like it or not. Giving your students a voice helps to reduce anger. The idea here is that “attitude is everything.” Too often kids, when they disagree, will personalize the disagreement, resulting in name-calling or the berating of others. Often bullies will use their power to force their victim into submission. Teaching students the right way to disagree with each other builds confidence, boundaries, and maturity. It helps both the bully and the victim. The Power Of Consistency The Teacher's Survival Guide Find Them Both At: The Bully Proof Classroom

10 Good Reasons Why Pod Course

10 Good Reasons Why Pod Course

Since the dawn of public education teachers and schools have focused on the academic achievement of students. All students were expected to leave school with basic reading writing and math skills. Some kids excelled and went on to institutions of higher learning, some were trained at a trade such as carpentry, or auto mechanics, and still others left school with those basics and worked at more labor related jobs such as factory or office work. Everyone who left secondary school did have the basics just at different levels. Every student may not have had the capacity to go to college but just about everyone finished school and had the ability to function in the real world. With the onslaught of state mandated testing in so many school districts throughout the country teachers are still pressured to ensure that students achieve but the landscape has changed and hitting the bull’s eye is far more difficult than it was say forty years ago. The bull’s eye is tough to hit because teachers are now being asked to hit a moving target. The target keeps moving because the levels of disrespect, and irresponsibility pervades our schools and basically you can’t hit something that won’t sit still, keep quiet, come prepared, stay motivated, and who really has taken no ownership for their own education. Local and state boards persist toughen their belief that success is based upon achievement not on effort and character. The faulty philosophies that have come out of some of our colleges that focuses more on methods of instruction rather than behavior management has both young and veteran teachers alike trying to figure out how to hit that moving target. In schools right now we don’t need one more test, or in-service that helps teacher's understand how to teach to the test we need a comprehensive program that focuses squarely on student behavior management, teaching respect, and encouraging responsibility.  Our young teachers who have been in the field for between three to five years may not know any different and are hounded daily regarding the academic achievement of students whose behavior is out of control, and veteran teachers who have done a good job of reading the tea leaves are planning for retirement because the work load is increasing to the point that it is becoming unmanageable. Our focus in education needs to be on steadying the target and improving student behavior ,not on improving test scores. If we begin to focus on behavior, character, and effort rather than achievement test scores will naturally go up because we will begin to develop willing learners. Colleges need to provide stronger training in the area of behavior management for future teachers and we need to provide more comprehensive training in the area of behavior management for teachers who are now in the field. Meet Katie Kuperman

Katie Kuperman is a passionate writer, entrepreneur and mother. Situated in Toronto, Canada, she lives with her family and is the owner and principal copywriter of Striking Content, a content writing and strategizing business. Her life has been rich with a breadth of experience ranging from competitive sport and travel, to academics and entrepreneurship, to motherhood and the pursuit of dreams. Katie writes with intent and purpose to make her readers feel, learn and do. It is her hope and her vision that, through her writing, she may be the ink that dots the lives of others in a positive and meaningful way. An anti-bullying advocate and never one to shy away from voicing her opinion, Katie wrote this story to open the eyes of our youth today, not only to see what bullying and mental health struggles can amount to, but also what each of us is capable of when presented with an opportunity to talk. I had the joy of interviewing Katie on my show and was really taken by her new book "The Only Way Out" and her knowledge base about bullying, and the dynamic between bullies and victims. The Only Way Out is a novel for youth and young adults. As motivational as it is emotional, the book addresses two important social issues: bullying and mental health. Written to touch hearts and inspire change, The Only Way Out is rooted in an empowering message to TALK.  She dedicates the book to her two beautiful children – but also someone else very important: Amanda Todd. When she was putting her book into print, she sought out Carol Todd, Amanda’s mother, and asked for her permission. and she is now humbled and honored to have her book dedicated to Amanda. Amanda was a victim of bullying who unfortunately took her own life. Katie donates part of all book sales to the Amanda Todd Legacy Society.  Visit Katie at: katie@theonlywayoutnovel.com www.theonlywayoutnovel.com The Only Way Out On Amazon Facebook

Parents today have a terrible time when their children leave home. That is because they know deep down that they haven't done enough to prepare their children for independence. Children today are not given enough basic responsibilities, and aren't prepared for being responsible for all that lies ahead in their lives. These children haven't learned enough about survival out in the dog eat dog world. They are emotionally immature. Developing Confidence

I interviewed Jen Dalton on my show about 2 months ago and found the interview to be inspiring and thought provoking. So much so that I asked her if she would co-host a show with me. Well, this is the show. I think you will find Jen's knowledge in the area of confidence to be unique and has a nice balance of empirical research and experiential opinion. In case you  missed it I am republishing her bio below along with some books and websites.  Jen or Jenny Dalton is an author, facilitator, coach,  and healer. Her work in the world flows from facilitating healthier local food systems and fundraising for an orphanage in Haiti, to talking about her recently published book “Of Butterflies & Bullies” – a Judy Blume inspired story about her experience being bullied in 5th grade. She’s also launching, soon, The Better Friends Club which will create a virtual space for women to transform friendship with self and others and heal from childhood bullying and other friendship challenges. You will find her to be an inspiring and passionate person who cares deeply about helping those who are the victim of harassment, intimidation, and bullying and in making the world a better place. Let's Work Together On This

Let's Work Together On This

Last week I produced an episode on an article in The NY Times titled "No Way To Grow Up." Great article that spoke to the problems our kids were facing due to virtual learning. This week the NY City Schools want to put everyone on virtual because of staff shortages as well as the number of students who have contracted the CORONA Virus. Mean while parents are up in arms because their child's school was shut down after the holiday break. For the sake of our children we need to work together on solving these school related issues peacefully and in a way that keeps everyone healthy and safe. This problem is not going away soon. I have made a few recommendation in this episode so listen in and enjoy.  The Bully Proof Classroom The Power Of Consistency Books2Read

The Pandemic Is Not The Problem

The Pandemic Is Not The Problem

No Way To Grow Up. A great article written in a newsletter by David Leonhardt for The New York Times. The first sentence states: American children are starting 2022 in crisis. Well, American children in every generation have always had some type of crisis. Addiction, bullying, suicidal ideation, depression back in the sixties we had the crisis of academics when Russia put a man in orbit before the United States. As a boy my crisis was managing the alcoholism and PTSD that my father brought home with him from World War Two, along with malaria and TB. The article speaks for itself but as adults we have to grow up emotionally and communicate to our children that they will be okay and let them know that resiliency is the word of the day and everyone can and will bounce back. The Pandemic truly is not the problem. Lack of resiliency might be; adult guidance, wisdom, and leadership have to improve if our children are going to experience the physical, mental, and emotional growth needed for lifelong success.  No Way To Grow Up The Power of Consistency

The Michigan High School Shooting

The Michigan High School Shooting

On Saturday, Tim Throne, who heads the Oxford Community Schools district, detailed in a letter the school's account of several key events leading up to the shooting at the high school by Ethan Crumbley.   "It's critically important to the victims, our staff and our entire community that a full and transparent accounting be made. To that end, I've asked for a third-party investigation be conducted so we leave no stone unturned, including any and all interaction the student had with staff and students," Throne wrote in the letter addressed to the Oxford community. In this podcast I critique the events. I am and have been concerned about how many after the fact reports and comments always seem to be made that point to the shooter as a potential problem the victim of bullying or dangerous. In this case the counselor of the school told the parents of Ethan Crumbley to take their child home and they flat out refused. Minutes later the shooting started. He had a gun in his backpack during the meeting.  This boy is only a child and is being charged as an adult.  The Bully Proof Classroom Anti Bullying 101 - The Book

Even when you take courses online or virtually there is still an investment of time that must be put in in order to receive the instruction and complete the course. Too often you might be a bit too tired after work and not want to have to sit at your computer for a couple of hours after dinner in order to respond to a forum post or answer some course questions. Developing Resiliency

Developing Resiliency

Resiliency is not something that is taught but developed over time through experience and life lessons. We are all only a compilation of what people have said to us and what people have done to us. How we perceive the words and actions of others and difficult situations may determine how resilient we are. If a person is raised in a highly critical home and his/her parents do nothing but correct, condemn, berate, and shame, as the person grows older even the slightest amount of constructive suggestion can be a trigger that creates anger and anxiety. Our goal should be to help our students and children realize these triggers at a young age and give them the tools to become good counter punchers and learn how to bounce back when something that is said or done to them sends them into a tailspin. How is this done? It’s done by understanding what we are all individually responsible for and what can be done by “me” and me alone to manage people, situations, and the environment. Listen in as Jim shares his insights and experiences about developing resiliency and why it is so important.  The Bully Proof Classroom Store

Avoiding Confrontations With Students And Parents

Avoiding Confrontations With Students And Parents

Let’s face it. No one likes a confrontation. Often, confrontations come out of the blue, and we can find ourselves in a very uncomfortable position where we need to quickly find the right words to defend ourselves. I’ve been a teacher since 1977, and I have experienced my fair share of unpleasant confrontations with students, parents, teachers, and even administrators. But the most difficult confrontations to deal with are those that occur in front of your class. These confrontations are not taking place out in the hallway between just the student and you as the teacher. They occur in plain view of every student in the room, and your students become an audience watching a drama unfold that has the potential to damage your future ability to teach in that classroom. Confrontations that occur between you and another adult can damage the relationship and leave everyone suffering. Take a listen to this episode of Anti Bullying 101. Jim will  give you some sure fire ways to deal with confrontational students and parents and help you become more situationally responses not reactive. Our Schools Are Filled with Kryptonite Part 3

Part Three Of A Three Part Series In reality Kryptonite doesn't exist in physical form but the concept of it does. There are many things and individuals that weaken us. There are kids that weaken, spouses that weaken, philosophies, theories, and policies that weaken. There are systems that weaken, government can weaken, and religion at times can weaken. As an example it only takes one or two behavior problems in a classroom to make the students and at times the teacher feel unsafe to the point where the entire class is weakened and learning almost becomes impossible. Religion and spirituality is a great way for many to quell fears, and deal with the stresses of life. If the leader of a church or any other group though becomes bigger than the group itself and uses his/her position to control others with the use of their Svengoli powers the individuals who are part of the group can become more reliant on him/her than on what the group actually represents producing weak and fearful followers who unwittingly have been lead into a cult. What one generation does in moderation the next one does in excess. Once a society has been weakened inter-generationally meaning over time the battle for truth, justice, and the American way becomes all that more difficult. We begin to lean more toward the path of least resistance and mediocrity and become more focused on political correctness than on the truth. The habits, beliefs, and thoughts, that had their origin forty years ago that were meant for good have become twisted and are now used as either a crutch or worse yet as an excuse for deviant behavior. Yes the schools are filled with Kryptonite and more and more of it is being brought into classrooms everyday by families, society, and by some of the faulty theories and philosophies that have been communicated in our colleges and universities. As we conclude part 2 of "Who is Jim Burns" I am going to be going over who Jim Burns really. How did my upbringing shape me and influence my behavior in relationships, friendships, and even marriage? We all need to set daily, weekly, yearly, and even lifelong goals. But, I believe one of my mistakes over time was mistaking movement for progress, and I ran in place for too many years. This is part 1 of 2. This is part 2 of 2 Learning from my mistakes and failures became an important part of my life after college. My personal life took a hit as I moved into administration because I didn't have my priorities straight nor  did I truly understand my role as a father. Lonliness

Lonliness

Sometimes it's good to be alone, and we all need that from time to time. Loneliness is another story, and the victims of bullying have self excluded themselves because of the fear of being bullied and the experience of being betrayed by those that they thought were friends. Loneliness can produce hopelessness and depression. As parents and teachers we have to be aware of the symptoms of loneliness and help our children and students begin to realize that they do have a purpose in this world and that they truly can connect with others. Stop The B

Stop The B

Meet Riddhi and Vasundhara Oswal On Monday November 21, 2020 I had the pleasure of interviewing Riddhi and Vasundhara Oswal. These two dynamic young ladies have used their own experience and the pain of bullying to found the Stop The B anti bullying campaign. And what a job they are doing.  Riddhi is a 16-year-old student, aspiring engineer and co-founder of Stop the B. After having experienced bullying and the stigmatizing effect of double-punishment at her previous school in Switzerland, Riddhi was determined to turn her negative experience into a positive one and create a campaign to help stop bullying and bystanding. Vasundhara – aged 22 – was inspired to create Stop The B after witnessing her younger sister being bullied at school. She is also currently working in the family business, as the finance director of a new multi-million-dollar business venture in South East Asia. Vasundhara believes that Stop The B is a force for good, by seeking to empower people to become ‘active bystanders’ by removing the stigma associated with speaking out and reporting bullying. I was thrilled to have them on the show and believe that their efforts will go a long way in helping to stop bullying world wide. Please take the time to visit their Facebook and twitter pages.  Facebook Twitter Become An Anti Bullying 101 Premium Podcast Member The Bully Proof Classroom

The Making Of A Bully

The Making Of A Bully

Acts of bullying were brought to the forefront after the devastating incident at Columbine High School in April 1999. Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold demonstrated many telltale signs of the victims of bullying that were left unnoticed, and the reality is, no one saw them at all.” If you look at acts of violence, you'll find comments from friends, neighbors, acquaintances saying that this person was weird, he was odd, it was only a matter of time," retired FBI criminal profiler Jim Wright said. "All of a sudden -- when the act is over -- a lot of people knew it was going to happen." Knowing what we know now it is evident that victims of bullying develop tremendous hate for their perpetrator, and fear establishing relationships with others because of the chance that they will be hurt again. This anger and fear resides in the heart and soul of a victim and roots itself causing the person to become so bitter and so debilitated by these emotions that it is only a matter of time before this rage will manifest itself. Unfortunately, this rage expresses itself often in adulthood when the person’s spouse or child discovers that their husband, wife, mom or dad is not the person they appear to be. Acts of bullying including violence may permeate the home creating an environment of fear and intimidation. The message that you get what you want through fear or asserting yourself through intimidation becomes a thought process that children develop and ultimately use on others outside the home, in school, and in the community. The victim if not dealt with using appropriate interventions and counseling produces the next bully. Listen in as Jim offers some insight on how stop this pattern of behavior and stop producing family, school, and community bullies. Anti Bullying 101 Premium Podcast Membership Join NOW! Stress Management Through A Balanced Life: The Course

Stress Management Through A Balanced Life: The Course

Well hi everybody my name is Jim Burns host of anti bullying 101. I want to share with you information about an exciting course that will help you manage stress and keep and stay focused. The course:  Stress Management Through a Balanced Life. As individuals we constantly strive to climb the ladder of success and work to become our personal best. Almost every continuing education class or workshop is designed to help people accomplish this. Even though these classes are valuable they don’t address the idea that life is a balancing act and there is not one basic area to consider but many. Some classes focus on exercise, or success in a relationship or greater financial stability. But, true change comes from within and it is the character of the person that really makes a difference. The balance between job and family responsibilities can at times be inappropriately misplaced because of a lack of understanding of priorities and the realization of what is really important. This 5 hour course covers fours areas that need to be addressed to help manage stress and create lifelong balance. When we understand the importance exercise, mental focus, our relationship with others, and our value system we will strike that balance and relieve the stress that comes with being overwhelmed by life and all of its responsibilities. This course will be available on Tuesday November 17, 2020. Just go to www.bullyproofclassroom.comand click on the link for courses. If you prefer to listen to a podcast of the course which includes the lecture notes go to: https://www.patreon.com/join/3225415.  This course offers some strategies and suggestions on how to manage stress and begin to incorporate these crucial areas into your life and create a structure that anyone can live with and maintain. How We Can All Get Along As A Nation

How We Can All Get Along As A Nation

The election is over I think and the split between Trump and Biden was almost 50-50. How does a nation get along when there is such a divide between it's people. As individuals we aren't  going to always agree with each other but we have to begin to try and disagree with the right attitude and cooperate even though we disagree. There are many things that we all must do including politicians to help bridge the gap with those who have a different belief system and learn how to value the differences in order to see life from another person's perspective. Join Jim as he explores how we can all get along as a nation by teaching our children some important principles and by being an example and practicing them ourselves.  The Bully Proof Classroom Anti Bullying 101 Premium Podcast Membership jameshburns55@gmail.com

How Do You Stop A Bully?

How Do You Stop A Bully?

With the right language a victim can stop a bully. A child needs coaching and some rehearsal in order to come up with the right words at the right time. Teachers and parents need to take the initiative and begin to help their student's/children develop those words that can defuse and deflect a bully's advances. This episode goes over some of the language necessary to build resilience and confidence. I have include a link for my listeners to a product called Comeback Cards. These cards can be posted around the room or shared virtually with your students to help them begin to make the language part of their vocabulary. As teachers and as parents, we constantly have sought to improve the behavior and the academic achievement of our children. Almost every continuing education workshop or class is designed to help educators accomplish this. Even though this is valuable, these workshops fail to address the idea that it is the character of the teacher/parent that will affect a child's success in the classroom and ultimately in life. We can fall into the trap of becoming so focused on the deficits of others, that we become less concerned about their own areas of personal growth. This course is designed to help educators, parents, and anyone who wants personal change to become more self-aware and give them strategies to personally strengthen themselves. The effect of becoming more self-actualized will help adults become more effective in their respective roles, and be much better equipped to meet the needs of all children. Message Me

Why We Have To Teach Kids About Lifelong Fitness

Why We Have To Teach Kids About Lifelong Fitness

In this world of technology and the pandemic of COVID-19 more and more children are involved in sedentary life styles. Virtual learning keeps kids from recess and physical education and the idea of riding a bike almost seems foreign to most kids. More importantly kids don't realize the importance of lifelong fitness and what it looks like. In this episode I explore why it's important for kids to get fit and stay fit and how a positive body image can improve self esteem, build confidence, and more importantly prevent one from being bullied.  The Bully Proof Classroom Brain Bursts Husky Trauma Stories

Courageous Conversations

Courageous Conversations

Children and adults alike can have a difficult time establishing boundaries and learning how to just say no. The statement, “I am not used to being spoken to that way” can have a far reaching benefit as children grow older. When children are not taught how to establish their boundaries they can grow into adults and develop attitudes that at times can be resentful, revengeful, and reactions that are full of anger and frustration. Establishing boundaries can be daunting for children especially now when bullying is so prevalent in our society. It does take courage and it is something that requires the quality of self respect and responsibility. The 10 questions contained in the journal are designed to help children reflect on their own attitudes and discover ways to learn how to disagree but with the right attitude. Having conversations that are uncomfortable is something that we all need to have at times and it takes courage of both parties to really facilitate change. Listen in as Jim outlines the 10 steps necessary for a courageous conversation to take place. Take the time to order the journal Courageous Conversations. This journal can be used to facilitate change in a family, a school, or a corporation.  Bensoundmusic.com The Bully Proof Classroom To Get The Courageous Conversation Journal Click Here

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

Some stress is a good thing; too much though can cause anxiety, depression, fear, and worry. Those who have experienced abuse, neglect, and violence may have trouble getting a grip on reality, and their thoughts. When those thoughts of the past plague a person they may be experiencing Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. People with PTSD have intense, disturbing thoughts and feelings related to their experience that last long after the traumatic event has ended. They may relive the event through flashbacks or nightmares; they may feel sadness, fear or anger; and they may feel detached or estranged from other people. People with PTSD may avoid situations or people that remind them of the traumatic event, and they may have strong negative reactions to something as ordinary as a loud noise or an accidental touch. This episode of Anti Bullying 101 covers some of my experience with PTSD and should help the listener understand the condition. Because I take this condition so seriously I have started another podcast called Trauma Stories. This podcast is designed to provide my listeners with a platform to share their stories either through email or by being a guest on the show. My goal is to provide a platform for those with PTSD to be heard and share their story of healing. My hope is to provide faith, support, and hope.
