35. 3 Rules of business communication (that apply to your interview AND your job)
In this episode, I talk about 3 business communication rules that will set you up for success during your job search process AND your actual job!
I’m also excited to share with you that I have a new training available now on How to Land Your Dream Job (without wasting months during your job search process)! Check it out here!
These types of concepts are what you’ll hear more of in the 45-minute training, so if you like this episode, be sure to check it out.
Tune in to hear:
- More about the 3 rules: (1) Never share data only; (2) Ask system-level questions; (3) Build confidence with content power
- The exact formula I use for creating the “voiceover” you need to have when presenting a lot of data (and you want your audience to agree with your conclusion)
- The healthy version of the relationship between preparedness and confidence
No matter what, remember that you’re totally capable of being great and feeling great, and you are so worthy of that.

34. I hate planning but love my planner [A Review of the Full Focus Planner]
I’m chatting all about a tool that I’ve been using for the last year that has made a HUGE difference in making me feel more intentional, purposeful, and prepared: the Full Focus Planner.
Listen in as I talk through:
- The main parts of the planner system
- What makes this planner different than others than I’ve used
- The magic of this planner that is the reason that I’ve been able to stick with it (hint: you can *totally* half-ass it and still get benefits!!!)
My major takeaway, as someone who hates planning, is that with the FFP, it’s NOT an exercise in planning: it’s an exercise in intentionality, and I loooooove that.

33. There's no such thing as a 100% right or wrong decision
In this episode, I explore a cornerstone belief – a belief that unlocks the ability to do a lot of other things. I wrote about it in my book, and I love talking about it, so I wanted to bring it to the podcast as well. Here’s the idea:
There’s no such thing as a 100% right or 100% wrong decision; decisions exist on a spectrum, always with some right and some wrong.
Listen in as I talk about why this idea is super helpful when it comes to making the (many, many) decisions you’ll make over the course of your life and what your goal should be when it comes to making big decisions.

32. 3 Ways to Achieve a Big Goal (like writing a book)
A few weeks ago, I had the honor of being interviewed for my favorite podcast, Clarity on Fire. That episode went live on a couple weeks ago and you can listen here. It was such a great conversation!
Before I got to chat with Kristen, she sent over a few topics to prepare, and there was one that we didn’t get to talk about (because we were too busy talking about so many other great things!), but my brain/heart/soul couldn’t let it go. So, I recorded this podcast for you to answer this one question:
“What advice do you have for someone trying to achieve a big goal, like writing a book?”
My answer has three parts: one, developing a mindset of inevitability; two, have a plan but follow your flow; three, take small, consistent steps (that are actually messy, ugly, and tiny)
Listen in as I share:
- how I surrendered to the inexplicable (and possibly illogical) desire to do something that I just wanted to
- how I used a plan to keep me unstuck, but not as a tool for forcing anything
- how I reconciled with my perfectionism, which is the real reason why making consistent progress on a goal is SO hard for me

- The frameworks for the 3 types of development in each category
- The relationship between the two developments
- What happens if you neglect personal and pursue only professional
This is a great episode if you’re new to this world of personal & professional development or if you’re looking for fresh perspectives on how to level up your development.

27. 3 Questions to Heal Your Burnout
There’s a lot of talk in our culture about burnout, and you might be experiencing it right now, too.
In this episode, we…
- Talk about what burnout feels like and why you are the kind of person who needs to figure out how to live in a non-burnout way
- Look to an actual fire for inspiration on keeping our flame burning bright & hot
- Ask the 3 questions you need to answer to heal your burnout: Do you have enough air? Are you burning the right materials? Are you taking up enough space?
After you answer these questions, you'll be on your way to discovering what changes you need in your life to revive your fire.

25. 4 Topics that didn't make it into my book (but are definitely worth knowing about)
I wrote a whole book on what I would want to tell my 20 year old self, but here’s the thing: I couldn’t fit everything into the book that I would want to tell her! In this episode, I cover four more topics that didn’t make it into my book, but are definitely worth knowing about. I share all about…
- How effort isn’t bad, and how I moved into a growth mindset and worked through some of my perfectionism, including the one word that releases me from procrastination
- The concept of Feminine and Masculine energy, and how it shows up in the way that we work and live
- How some things just can’t be rushed, and the beauty in that
- The lesson that I’m constantly learning: I can trust myself
These are the types of concepts that are all in my upcoming book, 7 Signposts, so if you liked this episode, you’ll love the book, too!

22. The Gift of Clarity: Workplace Gifts series
A few episodes ago, we started talking about the “Workplace Gifts” series. Today, we’re going to dive even deeper into clarity. As Brené Brown says, clear is kind. When it comes to your work, there are likely some very key pieces of information that you need to know in order to be successful. It might be obvious that these are things everyone should know, but that’s not always the case. In this episode, we’re going to talk about how to identify these critical topics and then ways to communicate them for clarity. jamieonpurpose.com/clarity-gift/

21. You won't miss it as much as you think: Intro to "I don't know who needs to hear this, but..."
Introducing a new episode type: "I don't know who needs to hear this, but..." which is where I play fortune teller or act like a teen magazine horoscope and share a good, generally applicable lesson worth knowing, and trust that you will decide if and how it applies to your life. I don't know who needs to hear this, but someone does.
This episode: you won't miss it as much as you think. If you're in a transition, and holding onto something because you're afraid of how much you'll miss it (or how much you'll be missed), here's your reminder that you won't miss it as much as you think you will. You're resilient, and you're adaptable. It's time to let it go.

20. My Birthday Letter - Here's to 26!
It’s my birthday! Well, technically yesterday was my birthday, but I want to celebrate with you, too!
Birthdays are always a time of reflection for me. In this episode, I share some of my favorite things from the last year (my favorite and most expensive purchases, where I traveled, the journaling practice I began), my lesson from this last year & the one I’m taking into this upcoming year, and the vision I currently have for my future.

On learning about rest and actually resting
Hi friends - you might’ve noticed that this episode is a little different than usual. In my therapy session last week, I talked a lot about how tired I am. Not in the sense of being sleepy, but feeling weary.
It’s a feeling that a lot of us are experiencing right now. Maybe it’s that we’re coming up on the anniversary of the pandemic, or we’re ready for spring and warmer temperatures, or we’re feeling the effects of a lot of remote working hours. My therapist gave me the homework assignment to learn about rest in all its forms as a first step toward actually resting. This is genius, and proves that she really knows me after over 3 years of working together. Under stress, I am an information gatherer, so giving me the task of learning about rest will get me excited to actually try out what I’m learning.
So, in short, I spent this weekend learning about rest and actually resting, which means that I don’t have a new episode for you today. If you’re still in the mood to listen, I’d encourage you to go back to any episodes you might’ve missed - #3 on Core Values and #13 on Identities are my favorites.
Otherwise, I issue you a challenge. When you clicked play, you might’ve mentally allocated 30 minutes towards listening to an episode. Take the remaining 25 or so to do something restful: sit quietly in your car, listen to the sounds of nature while walking around the block, or do a quick meditation. Heck, maybe even take a nap! Bring attention to your state of restfulness, and honor it. I will continue my search for information on rest, and also on how to actually rest. I’ll see ya next time.

19. Repetition as a Gift: Workplace Gifts Series
We’re kicking off a new series that I’m calling the “Workplace Gifts”. Today, we’re talking about the Gift of Repetition. Repetition is a tool for clarity, a way to communicate priority, and a method to retain and store information. We chat about how to leverage repetition intentionally in your work, your relationships, and with yourself.
Also, I started off the episode a little differently, talking about the experience of this past week being in Texas during Winter Storm Uri. Here are the links I promised:

18. How to structure a business presentation with 3 questions
In this episode, I’m sharing the best way to structure a business presentation or meeting. The specific scenario is any time that you need to present information that is either entirely or partially new to the audience, by the end of the meeting, have a decision made by that same audience. I have found that if I prepare by answering these questions from the perspective of the audience, then the meeting goes much smoother and no one feels like their time has been wasted. Here are the questions: “What’s in it for me, or why do I care?” “What exactly do you need from me?” “What? Why? Who? How?”
For show notes and more go to jamieonpurpose.com/18

17. All your decisions are right, then wrong: a mental model for decision making
What if there was a way to stop worrying about making a wrong decision? What if that way was to assume that the decision would eventually be wrong no matter what? In this episode, I share a mental model for decision making that asserts that all decisions are the “right” decision for some period of time, before inevitably becoming the “wrong” decision, and how we can adapt our conversations and expectations around choices accordingly.

16. The best note-taking system for an interview or client meeting
Taking notes during an interview or client meeting is essential. Today, I share my system for the best way to take notes that ensures you have the most important information readily available and that you minimize distractions, so you can focus on wowing the person in front of you.

15. The Four Pillars of a Success Mindset
In today’s episode, we’re rounding out January - the season of goal setting - with 4 of the most interesting and provocative paradigms that I have learned about when it comes to “success.” Collectively, they make up what I call a success mindset. The four topics and their sources:
- Growth Mindset - Mindset by Carol Dweck
- Passion is developed / Rare & valuable skills are the key - So Good They Can’t Ignore You by Cal Newport
- You don’t have to be the best at everything - Talent Stack by Scott Adams
- Success is chosen, every day, through intentional habits - High Performance Habits by Brendon Bruchard
I find value in all of these messages, and there’s a little bit more woowoo in me. So while I think all of these are true - with the central theme here being that you can create, develop, and choose success for yourself regardless of your starting point - there is some nuance.
This “success mindset” when paired with your curiosity and interest and joy is where you’ll see the most fulfillment.

14. The Case for Personality Assessments
In this episode, we chat through what personality assessments are and are not, the 3 things that these assessments give you, and a list of my favorite ones to take!
I also share why these assessments are flawed, and why I still think they're valuable. Hint: they give us a starting point for self-knowledge, and therefore, we know where to grow.

13. How Identities are the Key to Achieving your Goals
In this episode, we talk all about Identities. In this context, an identity is any belief that you hold about yourself. They can be negative or positive, and we all have LOTS of them that we have accumulated over the years.
Identities are the key to our actions due to the Identity/Action cycle. In essence, who we think we are dictates what we choose to do; what we do reinforces who we think we are. So, if you want to adopt new habits to reach a goal this year, you must first examine your identities. Which ones are helping you and which ones are holding you back?
I also chat through why adopting an identity is more powerful for when you inevitably “fall off the wagon” of your new habits.
If you liked this episode, be sure to share it with a friend!

12. Word of the Year: 5 steps to set your 2021 intention
Happy 2021! Welcome to a new year. My favorite way to kick off January is by setting my intention for the year through choosing my Word of the Year!

11. My Financial Year-End Review (2020)
There is no time like the end of a year to reflect on how life is going and reorient for the new year and set some goals! In 2020 I am most proud of the work I have done on personal finance, so I want to share a bit about that journey with you to hopefully inspire you to set some goals for the new year (or whenever you’re listening to this!).
In this episode, I share about what I did to set myself up for financial management success, talk about values-based spending, give you a break down of my top 6 spending categories this year, and tell you where to find some coupons!

10. My 2020 Life Lesson: Trust Yourself
When it comes to 2020, I think we’ve all learned more than anyone bargained for, but I’m distilling this down to the lesson I learned on a soul level. The headline is this: me saying to myself “Trust your gut.”
I read from Glennon Doyle’s Untamed and share some insights into what this lesson has meant for me and where I’m continuing to learn.

09. Q&A with Jamie: Career advice, life-changing books, goal-setting and more!
You asked, I answered!

08. Behavioral Interview Matrix: the tool you need to prep for your next interview
If you’ve been asked “Tell me about a time when…” in an interview, you know how nerve-wracking it can be to think of a story from scratch that is relevant to the position, answers the question, showcases your strengths, and is coherent enough that the interviewer follows along. The solution? Prepare ahead of time with the Behavioral Interview Matrix.
The Behavioral Interview Matrix is a tool that I created to help you plot out your stories according to your experience and the typical interviewing questions. It will help you get clear on what stories to tell, and how to best recount them AND take a ton of pressure and anxiety off the interview itself, because you’ll know you’re prepared.
Tune into this episode to hear all about how to set it up and use it for interview prep.

07. Prioritizing a feature list & learning a new language
MoSCoW and LOE, oh my!
We’re getting really tactical in this week’s episode to talk about my favorite way to prioritize a list. Specifically, we’re talking about feature lists when you’re working on a technology project.
Because, let’s face it: these days, every business is a tech organization and every project is a tech project. A critical key to success is being able to talk with your development teams in a language they understand, so that’s what this discussion is all about!
The two main components of prioritizing a backlog are Business Priority and Level of Effort. You’ll learn the definition for both, who supplies which pieces of information, and how they work together to build the final list.
In addition, I share my spreadsheet hacks & a sample download on how to organize your backlog in the best way possible.

06. Is consulting for you? An inside look of the “expert” business model
Have you thought about being a consultant but you don’t know if it’s a good fit for you? Or maybe your company has consultants or contractors that you’re working with, but you don’t quite understand why they’re there and how that all works?
This episode has lots of answers for you: everything you wanted to know about consulting, but were too afraid to ask.
You will learn some insight into the mechanics of the consulting business model, why businesses hire consultants, and some pros & cons of working as a consultant, plus a bonus “Mindset Secret” from inside the consulting world.
You’ll even hear about why some people say that 1 year as a consultant is equivalent to 2 years in industry, and why adaptability is the most important skill for a successful consultant.

05. Don’t answer the question: The surprising trick to turn small talk into meaningful connection
We all know the generic small talk questions and how they can feel unnatural. In my case, they even spurred my anxiety -- before this mindset shift -- because I was overly concerned with giving the “right answer” to the question that I was asked.
One day I realized that people didn’t actually care about what I did that weekend. Not in a “they don’t actually care” kind of way, but in a “they aren’t asking for a report on your weekend” kind of way. When people ask about your weekend, they actually do care about you and they want to connect with you.
Asking about your weekend is actually a way to start a conversation, learn something about you that is interesting, and find a way to connect with you.
The same goes for interviews: most of the time, the interviewer will never know to ask you about the most interesting thing about you. If you stick to answer exactly the question that is asked, and nothing more, you’ll miss a major opportunity to discuss what truly sets you apart.
In the show, I share more about this mindset shift and how to leverage it best.
