The Journey with Jared

The Journey with Jared

By Jared Salekin

Starting with a quarter life crisis and ending with hitting the reset button on my life, I found myself questioning everything that I thought I knew. Documenting this quest for answers through a podcast I explore topics on mental health, self improvement, and much more.
I do this through talking to others about their journeys (Journeys), deep dives into specific topics (Pit Stops), and sharing other conversations that I’m a part of.

The Different Ways Grief Shows Up | Journey 40 w/Vivian Nunez

The Different Ways Grief Shows Up | Journey 40 w/Vivian Nunez

On this episode I’m joined by Vivian Nunez, a writer and content creator. We begin by discussing Vivian’s platform and what led her to start it, talking about grief and the difference between grieving at ten versus twenty-one. Continuing on grief, we talk about how grief for every person is different and shows up differently for every loss. I then ask Vivian what she would recommend to someone supporting someone else who is grieving. Afterwards we talk about how accomplishment varies for each person on a daily basis – for some, it’s just getting out of bed, for others it can look much different. The next subject of our conversation is balance; how balance can look different, and be more flexible than simply “everything is equal” at all times. We then discuss the practice of taking care of ourselves, and how difficult it can be when you’re accustomed to taking care of others instead. We also talk about social media and how it’s actually helped the conversation around mental health grow. Vivian also recounts this impactful quote from one of her friends; “I can’t turn on the light, but I can sit with you in the dark.”

Finding Balance and Normalizing the Dark Thoughts | Journey 30 w/ Kathryn Burmeister

Finding Balance and Normalizing the Dark Thoughts | Journey 30 w/ Kathryn Burmeister

Lawyer, coach and author, Kathryn Burmeister joins me on the podcast this week to share her story.

While working as a personal injury lawyer in Georgia, the managing partner of Kathryn's firm committed suicide. Not wanting to give up on her clients, Kathryn joined a few others in taking on their caseload. Working on these cases without the support that she needed led Kathryn to overworking, not taking care of herself and eventually hitting her rock bottom. She shared with me how she came back from that dark place, why it inspired her to help others, and the importance of being proactive as opposed to reactive with your mental health.

Kathryn's book "Overcoming Addiction to the Status Quo" can be found on Amazon here:

The Struggle of Getting out of my own Head | My Experiences so Far

The Struggle of Getting out of my own Head | My Experiences so Far

I have always lived in my head, over analyzing everything, trying to game-plan for every possible outcome. Trying to get out of my head and actually be present in the moment I'm in, being less in my head and more in body. Although it has proven to be a difficult task and I am far from mastering it, I wanted to share my experiences so far. I hope you find some value in it!

Changing the Definitions around Forgiveness

I wanted to share my thoughts around looking at forgiveness differently, the idea that forgiving someone or "making peace" with a situation doesn't mean that whatever happened was okay, but it is important to be able to move on from and accept it as a part of our life.

Navigating Body Image Issues as a Man | Pit Stop 14

Navigating Body Image Issues as a Man | Pit Stop 14

Body image is something that I have struggled with for as long as I can remember, and hold a lot of shame around. I felt extremely lonely, as I didn't think any other men went through it. For whatever reason it seems to be that we are told it's not something that men should struggle with, or even acknowledge.

I still remember the moment Andy shared that he also struggles with body image issues at a King's of Hearts event. The weight that was lifted off of my shoulders was enormous, finally the feelings of loneliness started to go away. As I've been a part of more of these types of conversations, it has amazed me at how many people go through this alone. This is the reason why I wanted to have the conversation, and hopefully with more conversations like this, it will become a topic that we all pay more attention to.

Breaking the Chain of Insecurities Being Passed Down Generations | Pit Stop 13

On this episode of the Podcast I'm joined by Nuke and Andy to discuss the idea of "Breaking the Chain"

The idea of breaking the chain comes from seeing parents push their own insecurities onto their children because they haven't dealt with them themselves. I believe that by working on ourselves and making ourselves better people, not only will we reap the benefits, but we will be able to be better parents to our own children, positively affecting them and future generations to come.

I would love your any feedback that you have on the topic!
