Did you know that a man from Down scored the first hattrick in GAA in Wembley? This short episode tells a little about Wembley and GAA but mostly from the history point of the records of the great Laois-born broadcaster, Mick Dunne, and his efforts to improve the annual GAA event in England's soccer home through correspondents near and far. With thanks to Lily, Moira, Una and Eileen Dunne for allowing me into their family home and the treasure throve of Mick Dunne's museum-worthy GAA archive.

On Slice 53 I meet the gang from Portugal GAA! I chat with Luana (Brazil), Hugo (Portugal), John (Cork) AND THE MYSTERY GUEST – an All-Ireland winning member of the Cork panel from 2010, who is revealed near the end of the chats! We talk all about Hugo living next to Markievicz Park in Sligo for time, the Portugal-Ireland historical links, Jon’s time at Bishopstown GAA and beginning Newcastle-Sunderland Uni GAA, playing versus Galway in Salthill, training in Belém, and the amazing run their jersey had on the podcast GAA Jersey World Cup in October last! Also, a beautiful story about Hugo’s son’s dream and the mystery star reveals himself and tells us about being part of the All-Ireland panel 2010!

On Slice 51 it’s the turn of Orang Éire GAA in Malaysia! I chat to Na Fianna man, Cian, Belmullet’s finest Pat, and Toronto native, Jenn (married to Pat!) to find out about life in KL. We chat the club name, working with Guinness, rivalries with Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, Johor Boru and others, teachers flying to Tokyo from school for a weekend, the 10th anniversary in Clifden GAA, “12 Pubs” recruitment, Pat’s “incentive” for training the ladies, the Parish Cup, Youth v Legends debates, playing Sligo Rovers FC, ultimate frisbee, playing on the street at 1am and two amazing stories involving the unknown Nigeria GAA and tourism in Ballymore, Co. On Slice 50 it’s the turn of the gang at Singapore Lions GAA! I chat with Derek (Dublin), Paul (England) and Kim (Brisbane) to find out about the club has appeared most often as the “toughest team” in Asia GAA!! I find out all about going from being the “Mayo of Asia” to winning tournaments, the influx of physios and doctors to the region including one Cormac Ó’Mhuircheartaigh, the jersey link to an RTÉ show, stars in the club’s time including Gary Hannify (and his wife!), the iconic Kim’s super work with her Amazing Race, vodka jellies and her Party Bus featuring guests such as Paul Mannion and Jack McCaffrey, the famous Sing-babwe GAA team featuring Paul and Derek, the VET Team, Michéal Ó’Mhuircheartaigh on commentary in Singapore, and not only do they know Mrs Doyle from Father Ted, they have a member who was an extra on the show!

On Slice 49 the journey in Asia continues as I chat to Asian County Board and Seoul GAA man, Joe Trolan, to find out the craic in Asia and South Korea. We chat all about soccer scholarships from Coleraine FC to the USA, time with Atlanta GAA, discos in Slaughtneil in Derry in the 90s, sleeping outside the pub in Philadelphia, rivalries with Busan GAA and Daegu GAA, his AGM hiccups, army base training, Jack McCaffrey and Paul Mannion in Seoul, hurling with Derry, Asian Games wins, the club karaoke song and who did Joe pick between Korean soccer star Heung Min Son and Dungiven GAA man Joe Brolly? I find out about Jakob living in Carlow and learning the game from a 10 year old, games against other German teams, Lotti playing in her first camogie tournament, how the famous Germans loving their rules went against them in hurling, training in the university, the club playlist, a member named Ted, the might of neighbouring Belgium GAA and much more!

On Slice 45 I chat to Kerry (Ottawa/Antrim) and Dermot (Galway) about Ottawa Gaels GAA and the Canadian GAA as a whole. I find out all about the clubs origins, Kerry’s Cushendall and Antrim days, the East Canada GAA scene with Montreal, Quebec, Toronto, Prince Edward Island and others, the visit of Joe McDonagh to Ottawa, playing the great St Mike’s teams, the World Games 2023, Aussie John in Quebec and an incredible story about club stalwart Breda who played and won a final all while going through cancer treatment – an inspirational tale! On Slice 42 I have the pleasure of chatting to local Atlanta man Mark, Westmeath man Cormac and Cavan man and Chairman, Ray, as we find out all about Atlanta GAA in Georgia, USA. We find out all about being fans of Atlanta United, playing days with Bunbrosna and Lavey back home before playing in Stateside, the 96 Olympics and Michelle Smith, Ray playing in the ’86 NY Final with Larry Tompkins and Bernard Flynn being sent off, trips to Orlando, Charlotte and beyond, the competitive Southeast US Division, winning at the World Games in Waterford 2019, hurling on the i75 in traffic with a crowd watching and the tough choice between Kenan and Kel or Daithí and Maura!

On Slice 39 I have the pleasure of chatting to author, Seán O’Sullivan, about his new and unique GAA book, The Players Advice. This is sure to be a top seller in the coming months! Seán tells us about the inspiration for the book coming from the back of a physics class, having an insane number of GAA names involved, forewords by Mick Bohan and Marty, being one of the youngest authors with O’Brien Press, Self Help Africa and Alan Kerins, his own club Na Fianna in Dublin, his dad being his coach, and of course Seán takes on the quick fire round where he picks a Famous Five of GAA greats!

Loaf 2 GAA Global: Slice 38 (BOOK SPECIAL) - Tach and the Cosanthór
On Slice 38, it is something different. I chat with Sanya in Dubai, an author who has lived a large portion of her life in Ireland – from Monaghan to Mullingar and all in between. She tells us about her books based on a set of children’s characters called the Wadi Tribe. We look at how her character, Tach, a number 14 full forward turtle finds his way to Croke Park to play hurling. All done through the means of story which helps children with their emotional development and management. It’s a wonderful project and something I am delighted to bring to you. It’s not just for the GAA but for teachers, parents and anyone who wants to help children as they develop.

Privet and welcome to Moscow, Russia!!! On Slice 37 it’s a very special one for me as I get to chat to one of my oldest mates from home, Colm, alongside Brendan (Derry) and Kieran (Fermanagh) as we chat all about Seamus Heaney’s GAC in Moscow, Russia! We chat the origins of the club and how it could have been Joe Dolan GAA, teaching GAA on the Russian curriculum, approval from the Heaney family, city rivals Moscow Shamrocks, celebrations, Father Ted, Alan Partridge, laminated team sheets, teaching hand-passing to girlfriends and tough decisions like Sharapova or Kournikova.. and the only existing photo of Colm and myself in The Downs GAA jerseys! On Slice 36 I have the pleasure of travelling north of Stockholm in Sweden to the town of Gavle where I meet Mick (Kilkenny), Dane (Kildare) and former Éire Óg Oxford man, Conor (Donegal) to find out all about one of the world’s newest GAA clubs, Gavle GAA. We chat all about life in Sweden, celebrating before and after matches, the rivalries formed in a short time in Sweden, having good sponsorship, a Vikings All-Star GAA team and making those difficult decisions like ABBA, Christy Moore or Daniel O’Donnell. And Dane tells us about the Swedish game of bandy which he describes as being like a Junior C match in Kildare. And there’s a cracking choice of Father Ted moment!

On Slice 35 I chat to two awesome men – Kristopher, the founder of the Augusta GAA club, and navyman, Erik. We chat all things Augusta GAA, being at Wexford v Kilkenny 2004, Perdue College hurling, the rivalries with Michael Cusacks, Orlando, Atlanta and others, a man from Tullamore, having no Irish pub, maroon and white jerseys, becoming Hurling Kings of the South East, jabbing in the back and more. On Slice 34 I have the pleasure of chatting the top man himself, Justin Parks (as he relaxes in the sun outside) and his club Costa Gaels GAA on the beautiful southern coast of Spain along Marbella.

On Slice 33 I have something slightly different to offer. As somebody who is a huge, huge fan of quizzes, a message from a listener called Diarmuid lead me to a WhatsApp chat with the man you might be familiar with. When he appeared as a contestant on the award-winning quiz show, The Chase, several years ago little did he think his impact would be so immense that he would become a Chaser himself a few years later. Hear Darragh Ennis talk about his playing time in Ireland, Canada (Montreal GAA) and the UK (Éire Óg Oxford), Saggart GAA, how he was voted Most Improved Player, being a Liverpool fan, his amazing podcast Untangling Science, all things The Chase and Bradley Walsh, Bradys or the Roost as the pub choice in Maynooth, Father Ted and he is even so sound as to take on some GAA quiz questions himself – some set by kids in my class! On Slice 32 I fly from the state of Tennessee to the southeast Asian wonder that is Thailand. And of course, who else would I meet but two former county players for Offaly and Westmeath! Niall and David (“Dude”) bring me through the craic in Thailand GAA and beyond. We chat making CVs in Internet Cafes, teaching in Templogue, the conversation between the 2 lads before Dude came to Thailand, Offaly GAA growing and the parody account on Twitter, dual coding in tournaments in the heat, foreigners from Leitrim, hosting the Asian Games and the impact of South Africa Gaels, fielding an all-Thai team, back-to-back Asian Games success, Boidu Sayeh’s first game with Rosemount, doubling up tournaments in Malaysia with stag parties, the importance of John Campbell to Thailand GAA, Dude and the infamous jaw-breaking incident against Armagh, a pub named Father Ted, and the key questions like what is the Thailand GAA iconic karaoke song, a good temple or a good mass and the Giant Golden Buddha Statue or the great Alan “Buddha” Mangan for Westmeath? And will we see a Phuket GAA in the near future?

On Slice 31 I fly from China to the east of the USA and the state of Tennessee where Ben and Adam bring us through the life and craic at Knoxville Hurling Club. I find out all about the “Keep Knoxville Scruffy” motto, witnessing the Joe Canning goal versus Kilkenny, why Adam has a son called Ronan, having Offaly and Wexford lads at the club and making the vital choices like Wendy’s or Supermacs, Randy Orton or Sheamus, Mountain Dew or 7UP and the of course we mention the local Jackass himself, Johnny Knoxville.

"The Smallest GAA Club in the World"
On Slice 30 I fly from the west of Canada to the south of China to the city of Shunde near Hong Kong and Macau . It is here I chat with Ciarán from the mighty Co. Down and Sonny from the beautiful Ontario in Canada and chat all about life in the home of the great Bruce Lee! The lads tell us all about being in the home of the self-proclaimed Smallest GAA Club in the World, the rivalries with Beijing, Shanghai, Suzhou and others, the Asian Games, Sonny picking up the GAA and other key issues like are the Chinese a great bunch of lads, Shunde being a UNESCO Gastro City and whether the lads would pick Bruce Lee or Conor McGregor!

On Slice 29 this week I fly from the south of the US up to the western city of Vancouver in the beautiful Canada, one of my favourite places in the world. It is here I meet the gent himself, Patrick Quaile, former Fermanagh goalkeeper and now cofounder of the St Finnian’s GAA club in the city. We chat all about his time with Fermanagh and Malachy O’Rourke, St Patrick’s Donagh back home, playing with the ISSC GAA before starting up St Finnian’s, life in Vancouver, penalty shootout victories, how the Finnian name came in, Father Ted chats and much more.

On Slice 28 we have a bit of a state rivalry going on as we move through Texas to meet former Sligo football star Adrian Brett and find out all about San Antonio GAA. I find out all about his Sligo career, the life at San Antonio, convincing basketballers to wear O’Neills shorts, size 17.5 shoes, playing with St Brendan’s and London, changing kits like Man Utd, Maurice Fitz beating Mayo, managed by Mick Bohan, playing against the legendary Westmeath man Damien Healy, the international mix at the club, the Hardy Bucks, Stone Cold Steve Austin, rivalries with the other Texan GAA clubs, the USGAA and much more.

On Slice 27 I travel from the paradise of Bermuda to the south of the USA to the state of Texas. Here I meet Allie from Dallas and Eddie from Athleague in Co. Roscommon to chat all about Dallas Fionn MacCumhaill GAA. We chat the Rose of Tralee links, naming of Fionn MacCumhaill and the website story, Ronald Blackman’s (NBA Hall Famer) son on the team, Alamo and the Irish, Bernard Flynn, Dessie Farrell, DJ Carey and Michael Duignan all playing with Dallas, Railway Cup Dallas, The Rossies nickname, the Joe McDonagh story, the amazing Dallas St Patrick’s Day parade, Allie’s career with Boston and having a midfield of 6’8 and 6’7! On Slice 26 I fly from the British flag in the UK to a flag that contains the British flag in the Atlantic Ocean as I make the trip to the beautiful Bermuda. It is here I chat with Raheny native Ronan and learn all about Bermuda GAA and how it has evolved from the mid-2000s when my sister-in-law was among the original founders! I chat with Ronan and how the small island has grown the game, looking for friendships and rivalries in the GAA world, playing GAA in a country that is barely a mile wide in some parts, competing against the rugby 7s and cricket, Ronan’s dad as a referee, Sligo Rovers man Dante Leverock on the GAA board out there, being on a flight with Mattress Mick and of course the key questions like Guinness or Bermuda rum, Horseshoe Beach or the Irish beaches and finding out whether Bermuda soccer legend Shaun Goater really is the goat! On Slice 25 I make the Transatlantic journey from the USA to the UK and meet the gang from the different clubs representing Warwickshire LGFA. I catch up with Mairead from the Kingdom, Caroline from Magheracloone in Monaghan and the one and only legend and mad-scone herself, Gemma, formerly of Mullingar Shamrocks and Westmeath. We chat all about Gemma’s club swapping antics and her WhatsApp jokes getting lost, Mairead playing with the Kingdom underage, the growth and competitiveness within Warwickshire and much more, winning the Mary Quinn Cup, the emerging teams in Leicester, Birmingham and Coventry through youth setups, the geography of the GAA in Britain, Peter Leahy running from the airport to the pitch, Mairead robbing the netting, Caroline’s Jaegerbomb interview with Gemma, debuts against Cardiff and the vital questions like who is Gemma’s greatest of all time.

On Slice 24 I don’t have far to travel as I head up the east coast to New Jersey and meet the gang at the wonderful Jersey Shore GAA. We chat everything about the GAA life in New Zealand, growing player numbers and clubs, the great craic within the club itself, rivalries in NZ and the with the Australasian teams, Rory O’Carroll bringing his All-Ireland winning skills to Marist, a pub called Father Ted, the Plastic Golf Clubs initiation for newcomers, and of course some key discussions such as Dan Carter or Johnny Sexton, a sky dive in NZ or sky dive in Wicklow, Lord of the Rings or Lord of the Dance, Eden Park RWC Final or Croke Park All Ireland Final and of course…. Are there any Maori on Craggy Island?

Loaf 2 GAA Global: Slice 20 - Stockholm Gaels GAA
On Slice 20 I go from the heat of the African continent to the north of Europe and the Swedish Capital city of Stockholm. Emma, Donal, Julia and Philip bring us through the life at the Stockholm Gaels GAA club. Emma tells about her arrival from Connemara to dark winter in Stockholm, playing in Scandinavia against the rivals in their own nation, Denmark, Norway and Finland, Julia taking up the game as a native Swede and her winning goal against Malmo, bags of cans, and answering the key questions like whether ABBA are really the greatest, who is the better DJ - Avicii or Mark McCabe, H&M or Penneys, and the crucial choice between the dazzling Northern Lights or the dazzling lights of Coppers. Also, just to note, Donal hasn’t the greatest timekeeping skills and takes a long long time to appear…. But my god is it worth it! Kerry storytelling but Oscar winning. On Slice 19 I have such an eye-opening chat with Derek from Mayfield in Cork and the wonderful development officer from South Africa himself, Luyanda and life with South Africa Gaels GAA. On Slice 18 I touch down in the wonderful Los Angeles and catch up with all the goings on in Mulholland Los Angeles Ladies GAA. We have the fun and chats about setting up a new GAA ladies club in 2019, getting smashed by Denver Gaels, not wanting to follow the men’s team name of Cougars, grabbing J1 visa workers for GAA, Sam at the World Games, family in Dalkey, choosing between L.A. legend Leonardo Di Caprio or Irish Leo Varadkar. It is here that my mind is somewhat blown by the stories of Kilkenny man Mike from Bulfin GAA, Santiago O’Reilly of San Isidro GAA and Stevie Tomas Cartledge from Argentina GAA. Where to start? Honestly, I don’t know! It could be chatting about Stevie’s relations the O’Callaghans – yes Con and Cian and the Wallaces of Westmeath, Santiago O’Reilly and the Longford link, how a Kilkenny man ended up hurling in Argentina, the brittle Argentine ash for making hurls, being managed by Pat Spillane, the huge historical links between our two nations, coming to Ireland in 2013, Argentina men playing out with Moycullen in Galway, being fans of Clifford and Canning and just how Stevie, bagpipes, hurling and Cusack Park Mullingar go in the same sentence. This and much much much more! There was just something special about this one for me

We learn all about the links and naming of the club after the great Tyrone legend himself, his memory living on through the club and in the Cormac Trust, rivalries within the NSW teams and the OZ territories, and of course the lads answer the same vital questions as NSW did last week!

On Slice 11 this week I chat to a woman who not only played in the GAA but was a founding member of her club when she was still at school! Today, not only is she one of the true passionate supporters of the game, but has now risen to new heights. I chat to current Leinster LGFA President and former Tubber and Moate ladies star, Trina Murray. We chat everything from the influence of her iconic father, Tommy Broder, and brother Michael, missing out on a big game against Dublin after a car accident, sending out fixtures in the post, the dominance of Rochfortbridge ladies in the past, the impact of TG4 and Lidl on the ladies games, and much much more.

Owen Fitzgerald is an All Star defender and All-Ireland winner at underage level with the Kingdom of Kerry. We chat all things Sliabh Luachra and Gneeveguilla GAA in East Kerry, working under managers Peter Keane and John Sugrue, the Munster Final Chickenpox saga, bringing the trophies into schools, marking a Clifford, hiding in the canteen, life in UCC and the vital aspect of lockdown - getting the PS5 delivered! Owen is a gent and a credit to his club and county and certainly a name to look out for in the coming seasons.

Loaf 1 - Slice 8: Ailish Considine
On this weeks Slice 8 I have the chats with a legend of several codes. Whether footballing with her sister and teammates in Kilmihil GAA in West Clare, kicking with the county, winning the Champions League with West Clare Waves, representing Ireland with the Irish Banshees or kicking goals on the biggest stage down under with Adelaide Crows, this woman does it all! And to boot, a sister, who has recently been voted as full back on the Irish women’s rugby team of the decade. It is of course, Ailish Considine!!

On Slice 7 this week I have the chats with 2 legends of Meath GAA – Simonstown Gaels Sean Tobin and Longwood star Mickey Burke, better known as the honey badger. We chat everything from Mickey’s 2 nicknames, Colm O’Rourke, going to watch Meath under the legendary Sean Boylan, that fight in the square in Croker in 1996 against Mayo, winning the U16 Gerry Reilly Cup, crashing mopeds in Thailand, mickeyburke.ie, and of course I couldn’t not mention Westmeath v Meath 2015 (even if I did ignore decades of Meath wins!!)

On Slice 6 I chat to 4 women who are no strangers to the camogie and football fields, and also several nightclubs around Ireland as you’ll hear. Pamela is one of the countries great servants to GAA and holds a unique record in the sport which you’ll hear. Mairead, like Pamela, recently stepped away from the county scene having lifted the Jack McGrath cup as WH captain in 2019. Caoimhe and Sheila now hold the fort out of the four at county level and have shown they can compete with the best for years to come
