AIM Leadership Roadmap Introduction
Welcome to my new Two Minutes of Talking Change podcast series – The AIM Leadership Roadmap.
When I embarked on writing a book in 2020, my original idea was to write a book about confidence – what is it, how do you get it, and how do you instill it in others. I’ve coached loads of people over the years who lack confidence but certainly do not lack accomplishments.
I interviewed over 30 leaders to better understand what shook their confidence when taking on new roles. Fear of failure was the number one answer. These were seasoned and successful leaders with many accomplishments to their names. These interviews and my leadership coaching experience informed the development of the AIM Leadership Roadmap.
The AIM Leadership Roadmap helps leaders who have a new role, new mandate, or new team to lead with confidence, accelerate impact, and deliver results in their leadership role. In this podcast series, I’ll break down the steps you can take to build your own leadership legacy.
Watch the videos of my Leader Interview Summary and the AIM Leadership Roadmap to get started.
For the next 9 weeks I'll be posting the 9 steps to take to go from fear of failure to building your leadership legacy. Subscribe to the podcast or sign up to get the newsletter.

Innovation isn't an IDEA problem, it's a LEADERSHIP problem
Innovation isn't an idea problem. It's a leadership problem. My guest - Robyn M. Bolton - let's us in on the secret to sparking innovation in your organization and the reasons why innovative ideas may not be bubbling to the surface in your organization.
How does this relate to leading change? Innovation is something new that creates value, 'something new' requires change!
Tune in to find out the ABCs for inspiring innovation.
Robyn is the Founder & Chief Navigator of MileZero LLC, an innovation consulting firm that helps leaders confidently use innovation to grow their businesses. Previously she was a partner at Innosight, the consulting firm founded by Clayton Christensen and she started her career at P&G where she was on the team that developed and launched Swiffer.

What is the most important criteria for a successful change project?
My special guest - Lindsey Agness - tells us the need for answering the WIIFM during change - tune in to find out what that is. She gets to the heart of who we need to be thinking about when aiming to make change in organizations and what criteria we need to address to do change right.
Lindsey Agness is one of the UK’s leading change specialists, specializing in staff engagement, performance improvement, behavioural change and motivation. Her career includes 11 years as a change management consultant, corporate trainer and coach for PwC then as a business owner and entrepreneur. She has written 4 books on change.

Educate on Change Management before Executing on Change Management
My special guest - Rishwinder Sethi - highlights the need to educate and converse with people prior to asking them to do things during change. He outlines what people need to know and understand before they can be good change leaders, and why it's important for leaders to understand where they are at on their own change journey before they can successfully lead others.
I couldn't agree more with his sentiments - this is why I created AIM Changer - an experiential course to give leaders the tools, support, and confidence needed to lead during times of change, whether they chose the change or had it imposed on them.
Rishwinder Sethi loves to develop people into change leaders and strategically advise them on how to approach change with curiosity, perseverance, humanity, all while aligning strategic vision into actionable people outcomes.
For more on the conversations needed to lead change successfully, check out Talking Change: Must-Have Conversations for Successful Leaders.

Why Change Management is both an Art and a Science
My special guest, Jennifer McCarthy - a Senior Manager with KPMG in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in the People and Change Advisory Practice - tells us why change management is both an art and a science. And she sheds a little light on why people resist change with a quote from The Practice of Adaptive Leadership by Marty Linsky.

Does my project actually require Change Management?
This is a question change managers, and others, hear a lot. My special guest today is Serena McArthur - the Director of Enterprise Change Management for the Government of New Brunswick. She is a long-time change practitioner and Master Black Belt in Lean Six Sigma.
Serena has a great counter question to 'Does my project actually require change management?' - Tune in to hear the answer to these questions and her top tips for leading successful change.
And this episode includes the 'extended cut' of our conversation for a little more insight into why change management is needed, even in seemingly simple projects.

Lead with Questions

And, can you do it? Can you only ask questions tomorrow?

The Missing Link to Implementing Change that Sticks
The key to making change stick and realizing the benefits of the change you’re trying to make is getting people committed AND having them continue working in the new way. This means you need all the people in your organization - those who do the work of your organization everyday – to be on board. The people who are going to be able to make this happen for you are your managers – the people who lead your teams everyday – the supervisors, lead hands, managers, directors. They are the ones who likely didn’t chose the change – that is often done from the top – yet they are the ones who lead and influence the majority of your people. The catch is that these people managers also need to transition to the new way and buy in and commit to doing things differently.
Find out how to fill the missing link in today's episode.
Ready to equip for people leaders and managers to drive change in your organization. Bring AIM Changer: Leading People through Change to your organization. Find out more about AIM Changer.

Why Conversations are Needed to Lead Change that Sticks
Transforming an organization requires people to commit to the change. Commitment is gained when people feel heard. People feel heard when they are engaged in productive conversations. Conversations get the thoughts out of our heads. Thoughts lead to emotions. Emotions lead to actions. Actions lead to results.
Conversations create change! Listen in to find out more about why conversations are needed to lead change that sticks. 1

The Seven Dynamics of Change
Almost every time I facilitate a session on leading change I take people through an exercise I’ve been using for 20 years – the seven dynamics of change. It’s based on Ken Blanchard’s work about the seven predictable patterns that people go through when experiencing change. I love this exercise and it works every time to drive home my key points about people’s reactions to change.
Listen in to learn about the seven dynamics and consider how these dynamics are playing out in your change efforts.

Developing a Change Management Plan
When I get asked to provide change management support on a project, my first question is always ‘what do you mean by change management?’. My definition of change management is driven by the need for an organization to realize its desired outcomes from a change. To do this you need solid project management – to prepare, implement, and evaluate the change AND you need transition plans to support people through the ending, exploring, and new beginning stages of transition. Together, these plans make up your change management plan.
In this short podcast I outline the steps to create a change management plan based on the Planning and Managing Conversations and the Engagement Conversations from my book - Talking Change: Must-Have Conversations for Successful Leaders.

Just like on a flight where they instruct you to put your own oxygen mask on before helping others (in the unlikely event that oxygen masks are needed), you need to start with some self-reflection, and perhaps some personal changes, before you can successfully lead others through change.
And there is fun background music in this one too!
