Becoming YOUR Best with Jenny Lytle, RN
By Jenny Lytle
I have always wanted to help others and have done that as a nurse for almost 30 years. I suffered from burnout myself, lost my mom suddenly to a lack of self-care, and have worked with countless women who give and give to others, often at the expense of their own health and happiness.
I believe there is a better way. Join me on a journey to becoming YOUR best self. This is not about comparison, it's about who you were made to be.

Becoming YOUR Best with Jenny Lytle, RNMar 28, 2022

51. A widow's journey - Amy's story
- In this podcast episode, Jenny interviews Amy, who is involved with Widows' Purse, a support group for widows.
- Amy describes how Widows' Purse has benefited her by providing a community of women who understand her story.
- She highlights that most of the women in the group are younger and don't fit the stereotypical image of a widow.
- Amy initially struggled to accept her widowhood and found it helpful to be surrounded by others who could relate to her experience, sometimes even before she fully understood her own emotions.
- Sunah has personally helped Amy with various aspects of coping, including dealing with her children and seeking financial advice.
- Amy encourages women who may be hesitant or unsure about joining the group to explore it and see what it has to offer, emphasizing that it is a safe and therapeutic space.
- Jenny acknowledges that reaching out to strangers can be challenging, but emphasizes that Widows' Purse provides a welcoming environment with a diverse range of personalities and temperaments.
- Amy shares her personal experience and offers valuable insights on what is helpful and not helpful during such a difficult time. They also highlight the significance of genuine support and utilizing the resources available within the community.
Key Points:
1. Avoid Comparisons:
- Each person's loss is unique, so avoid comparing your loss to theirs.
- Instead, express empathy and offer condolences without diminishing their grief by saying things like, "I can understand how you feel" or "You'll be fine."
2. Be Mindful of Your Words:
- Take the time to think before speaking, and avoid saying the first thing that comes to mind.
- The best thing you can do is simply be there for the person, offering genuine support and a listening ear.
- Avoid providing unsolicited advice or empty assurances that everything will be okay.
3. Practical Acts of Kindness:
- Sometimes actions speak louder than words. Offer specific assistance, such as cleaning their house, running errands, or providing financial support.
- These tangible gestures can be incredibly meaningful and show that you genuinely care.
4. Utilize Available Resources:
- Reach out to friends, family, or members of the community who are willing to help.
- Take advantage of their offers, as they genuinely want to be a source of support.
- By allowing others to assist you, you are not hindering their blessings but helping them fulfill the biblical call to care for widows.
Then Jenny and Amy discuss the surprising emotions and challenges Amy faced after becoming a widow.
- Amy shares that she has always been a fearless person but experienced overwhelming fear after her husband's passing.
- Amy talks about how she had to fight against the spirit of fear and remind herself that God has not given her that fear.
- She mentions that she had to work through various emotions such as anger, jealousy, disappointment, loneliness, and anxiety.
- Amy highlights the importance of counseling, support from the church community, friends, and family in helping her cope with these emotions.
- Taking time off work after her husband's death and starting a new job also brought up fears, but she pushed through and overcame them.
- Despite missing her husband's support and encouragement, Amy found that God helped her conquer her fear, allowing her to thrive in her new job and live without constant worry.
- Jenny acknowledges how loss reminds people of their lack of control and the importance of appreciating everyday moments.
- Amy emphasizes the need for a supportive community, turning to God, and continually working through fears and tough emotions.
- The conversation concludes with Amy expressing gratitude for the determination she possesses and the support she receives from the Widows' Purse community.

48. Dealing with Dementia with Marianne Sciucco
Marianne Sciucco is not a nurse who writes but a writer who happens to be a nurse, using her skills and experience to create stories that bear witness to the humanity in all of us. She writes contemporary, women's and young adult fiction. Marianne is an author, co-founder and manager at AlzAuthors.com, the global community of authors writing about Alzheimer's and dementia from personal experience.
A lover of words and books, she studied the craft of writing as an English major at the University of Massachusetts at Boston and worked for a time as a newspaper reporter in New England. She eventually became a registered nurse to avoid poverty.
With more than 20 years’ of experience as a staff nurse and case manager, she's worked with countless families dealing with issues related to aging, elder care, Alzheimer's, and nursing home placement. In 2002, she put the two together and began writing about the intricate lives of people struggling with health and family issues. She published her debut novel, Blue Hydrangeas, an Alzheimer's love story, in 2013 to glowing reviews.
This book led her to become a co-founder and director of AlzAuthors, the global community of authors writing about Alzheimer's and dementia from personal experience to light the way for others. She is the podcast producer and host of Untangling Alzheimer’s and Dementia, an AlzAuthors podcast. Visit AlzAuthors.com.
She shares that a lot of the books are memoirs and the authors are raw and honest about their experiences, which can help others feel less alone in their struggles and well as pick up some tips and tricks for coping day-to-day. There are often resources shared as well, and some of the books are more of a caregiver guide.
The resources available on the website are helpful because, in Marianne's words, "Many times people are isolated and they feel like they're alone because they don't know anybody or they think they don't know anybody else that's going through this situation. So when they read a book, somebody's story...say they're caring for their mom. They read a book about somebody else that has cared for their mom. It helps them see 'I'm not alone and this person has learned all of this stuff. And maybe I can try some of it, too' ... there's just a lot of trial and error in dementia care and what works one day may not work the next."
Marianne talks about the importance of having a schedule when caring for someone with dementia, both for them and their care, but also to schedule in some time for your own self-care.
She then goes on to give tips about avoiding communication overwhelm by coming up with a system to keep friends and family in the loop without taking up huge amounts of time.

47. The Soul of Caregiving with Edward Smink Ph.D.
"The greatest gift I have as a caregiver is to see someone that I'm working with gain insight, like a light bulb goes on."
"You don't have to like every person you deal with, you just have to be present to them."
"In our culture. , we don't like the D-word -dying. Maybe years ago the physician would say to the family, "Mr. Smith, your mother isn't doing very well. In fact, she's dying, but I want you to know that I'm taking care of her and we're going to give her the best comfort care we can do. Today the doctor will say, "Your mother isn't doing well. What do you want me to do?" And so immediately, the family feels they're the ones causing the life and death of their loved one. And the doctor has given up his authority to the family. And the family feels the burden of that. And so oftentimes I was with different families and they would say, "What's going on?" And I would say, "What has the doctor told you?" "She's not doing very well." "What do you think is happening?" They may say, "I think they're dying." And I'm saying, "Yes, that's true. They are dying. And so what we're concerned about is how your mother will die. So that's why we bring up, and the doctor asked me to talk with you about it, do not resuscitate, because given her situation, it's going to be a futile exercise."
"If you have children and they're hurting, what do they do? They run to their parent. And what does the parent do? The parent puts out their arms and holds them. In our culture today, caregivers need to know that they're the arms that hold the family in crisis. And so that's very important. . When people are in crisis, they don't know how to make decisions. . And so you have to help them, guide them to make the appropriate decisions. That's different than, 'oh, what do you want me to do?'"
"The heart of being human is to care. So we're all caregivers."
Three cultural taboos that I discovered were:
1. caregivers don't trust what's going on within themselves.
2. we don't communicate our story.
3. don't show your emotions
Taking care of ourselves is about figuring out those little things that we can do. It's not about the big spa days and beach vacations, it's those things like getting enough sleep and, just pausing enough to say, what do I really need right now? Then doing what you can to make that happen.

46. Colds? Allergies? You NEED this remedy!! Talking bees and honey with Joyce Dales
Biography
I'm Joyce Dales, the CEO of Buzzagogo and the maker of Cold Bee Gone Nasal Swab Remedy. Cold Bee Gone is a little homemade, honey-based cold remedy that was created in my kitchen in 2009. My husband Jeffrey and I had just welcomed home our newly adopted daughter from Vietnam. Upon arriving home in New Hampshire, she was recovering from emergency open-heart surgery due to a legacy defect attributed to Agent Orange. She was considered immunocompromised and was at higher risk for complications from everyday germs. In order to protect her, I created Cold Bee Gone, a homeopathic, proprietary super honey blend that you swab in your nose to help fight cold and flu symptoms while also enhancing overall nasal biome and immune function. I had learned that most illnesses start in the nose, and if your nose lacks healthy flora, you can be at increased risk of getting sick. My goal was to tackle the issue from every angle by alleviating symptoms of active illness while also enhancing what I like to call the “Booger Biome.” Today the entire world is getting a crash course in how the nose is where viral replication starts, and therefore it needs to be in top fighting form. My message about the importance of nasal immune health is timely, and Buzzagogo's products are in great demand. The company saw tremendous growth in 2020 as over 2/3rds of consumers shopping in the cough and cold category is looking for innovative alternative remedies. The pandemic has created shortages of mainstream products, and little companies like Buzzagogo are filling the gap. Buzzagogo has four products in over 12,000 stores, and are official sponsors of the Boston Red Sox. This cold and flu season combined with Covid has many families on edge, and we certainly understand that feeling. I hope my little home remedy can help take the fear and the sting out of every cold and flu season from here on out!

Here's a little sneak peek - so many good topics discussed! We went a bit longer than usual, but I think you'll agree it was worth it!
"And I think what we forget sometimes is that we're not gonna be any good to anybody if we're not any good to ourselves."
"We're angry because we chose a role that was not necessarily for us .... Just because it's a God thing doesn't mean it's a good thing for you."

36. "You Can't Eat Love" with author Leslie Davis
There are a couple of intermittent technical difficulties- they're brief and her story is still wonderful, so stay with us.
- start with gratitude - "Gratitude ... turns what we have into enough..." Melody Beattie
- why you need to tune some people out
- more about her book, "You Can't Eat Love", including "and the truth of the matter was the only person who did not love me was me. And I recognized you can't eat love. "
- how grief could have taken her down
- want vs. need/should - how to keep your power
- how to keep the opinion police away
Leslie Lindsey Davis (Amazon best-selling author) is always on a journey. Her motto is “why not?”. She measures things she wants to do against the yardstick of “When I am 80 years old, I don’t want to be sitting in my rocking chair on my front porch saying, ‘I wish I would have’”.
She has taken a wrong turn on several trips with her older boys. The boys would say “we’re lost”. Her reply was always, “No, we are on an adventure.”
Life is one grand adventurous journey and making sure everything is done from scuba diving to beekeeping. From riding on an elephant to riding in a hot air balloon. And so much more in between.
Her passions, besides her family, are GUTaS International and her heart family in Zimbabwe – especially Mercy, Betty and Itai. GUTaS stands for Get Up, Take a Step. GUTaS is changing lives one step, one stitch at a time.
When her husband and children ask “Why?” Her response is always “Why not.”
Leslie has taken her experiences, her humor and her perspective on life and is now helping other people heal the wounds in their lives. She believes in celebrating every win and through the celebrating we can retrain the thoughts we have running through our head.
'If we have our own why in life,
we can get along with almost any how.'
Friedrich Nietzsche

35. Michelle Connery and the blessing of burnout
Michelle Connery is a burnout recovery coach and founder of Michelle Connery Coaching.
Prior to starting her business, she was a successful Corporate Accountant with over 20+ years of experience. Like a lot of Accountants, she spent the majority of those years prioritizing her career over her mental and physical health.
That was until 2018 when Michelle drove herself to the ER thinking that she was having a heart attack. That experience started her healthy living journey, but it wasn’t until the pandemic hit that Michelle realized she needed to make a major change. She was exhausted, her anxiety was at an all-time high and she was suffering from burnout.
Michelle realized that it was time to ditch the high-pressure career and the toxic work environment to pursue her passion. Which is to help other ambitious professionals reignite their flame and go from burnt out to balanced.

30. Reboot your Health with Sheila Keilty
Info about our guest:
Sheila was told:
she wouldn't live past 55 - she just turned 60
she'd never lose weight because she couldn't exercise
she'd spend the rest of her life in an electric wheelchair
she should just adjust to being overweight and diabetic
She turned all of that around and now loves helping other women do the same!
Biography
Most people know Sheila as a licensed health and wellness coach and founder of the "Mind-Body Reboot Method" holistic wellness program. What you may not know about her is that not too long ago, she was severely obese. Sheila suffered with terrible chronic inflammation, pain, and had become disabled from out-of-control metabolic unhealth and spinal collapse.
The day Sheila decided to change her future was the start of a very long, very lonely, and expensive journey. After an extensive series of failures and setbacks, her search led her to a stunning transformation that has changed her life forever.
Today Sheila is more than 130lbs lighter, no longer diabetic, and sees her future quite differently! The life-altering transformation she’d had couldn’t be kept to herself. Sheila is now a licensed Holistic Health and Wellness Coach and Mindfulness Meditation Instructor who coaches other women like herself to dream again and to not accept the diminished life they've been told is their future.
Sheila’s passion is to partner with women, like her, to break through the old barriers to lifelong health and wellness and empower them to build the quality tomorrows they so deserve, despite their age or abilities.

The very first step is to uncover the listener's wellness issues and challenges, and to see if they qualify to be part of The Reboot. By discussing their answers to 10 questions attached to my booking page, I am able to do my homework and get to know them prior to the call, and they are able to identify some of their current stumbling blocks, past and current pain in finding a solution to their wellness issues, and to do a deep dive on their "Why" around wanting to hire a health & wellness coach in a mind-body health program - and why at this time.

29. Chronic Pain and Cognomovement with Katie Wrigley
If you have chronic pain, or know someone who does, you know the way that it can take over your life. My guest Katie Wrigley knew this all too well, but has turned her life around and completely changed her pain. According to Katie, "chronic doesn't have to mean permanent®".
As a nurse for 27 years, I am pretty well-versed in pain, but I learned some new things that I'm super excited to share with you!
Listen in for more about:
- the 3 phases of a pain journey
- the role trauma plays in pain
- the subconscious things that can keep you in pain
- and most importantly, how you can find out more about changing your pain!
A bit more about Katie:
After running from herself until she reached her early 40s, using anything she could find to numb out, including losing herself in a demanding career in Corporate for over 20 years, Katie found herself disabled in her early 40s, after several years of increasingly severe chronic pain.
Traditional medicine continued to fail her as diagnoses piled up, including:
- Fibromyalgia
- Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)
- Slipped and bulging discs
- Unrelenting chronic nerve pain and increasing weakness in her limbs
Enough was enough.
Katie started making changes in her life over the next couple of years, but hadn’t yet resolved the unrelenting nerve pain down her legs. While preparing for back surgery in 2020, Katie was introduced to Cognomovement, a mind/body exercise that stimulates the hemispheres of the brain, and allows access to answers and solutions that we wouldn’t otherwise find. Cognomovement helped Katie put an end to her 8 years of chronic pain.
Katie immediately immersed herself in Cognomovement, both to earn her practitionership, as well as exploring classes on a personal level to see what else within her life could be improved. She never had back surgery, and Cognomovement has transformed her life, as well as the lives of others. Katie is now a Level 2 Cognomovement practitioner.

Sometimes, certain things, even the things that we really want, just aren't a big enough priority at that particular season in our lives for us to take the actions necessary to achieve the changes we want.

18. I wish I could, but I don’t have time
It can be hard to recognize our own needs. Sometimes we can be so in the habit of just going through the motions and doing all of the things that we need to do on a day-to-day basis that we don't have the time or energy to think about what it is that we really want or need.
But here's the thing. Things don't really “just settle down” without intentionality. Life is busy and isn't going to get less busy on its own. In fact, the opposite is likely to happen. I still find myself struggling with this, even though I know better, and I know how things happen.
What really matters most to you? Does your schedule reflect that?

17. Riding the waves of grief
Becoming YOUR Best - practical application for this week:
- Do you have the right quality and quantity of relationships for you at this point in your life? Remember, there is no magic number, no right answer here. Do YOU feel like you have what you need relationally? And if not, how can you change that?
- Are there things that are important to you that you haven’t done? Things that you would feel regret about if you were to get a difficult diagnosis? What can you do to make those things happen? (I’m not talking about a bucket list of things you’d love to do someday - this is for the BIG things that would keep you up at night or make you feel a sense of loss.)
- Are there areas of your life where you are comfortably uncomfortable? Where you know you’re not living out your life the way you want to be, but it just feels too challenging to step outside of your comfort zone? I’d be happy to talk through this with you. You can schedule a no-obligation discovery call at https://calendly.com/jennylytlern/
To be quite honest, I’m not sure what next week will be about. Right now I’m finishing this week an hour before I publish it, so my goal for this week, as well as the upcoming weeks, is to bring you something that is honest, raw, and will hopefully encourage you along your journey.
In the meantime, I’d love to hear from you! What are your experiences in this area? What would you love to hear about? Or do you have some great tips to share? DM me at http://www.instagram.com/jennylytlern

16. No time or energy for self-care
This week we're going to talk about how to fit in self-care even when you feel like you don't have the time or energy. So many of us are burning the candle at both ends and have so much going on that there just doesn't feel like enough hours in the day. There is a lot of work that can be done to dig into what matters the most and free up some time. But for this week we are just going to concentrate on how to fit in little bits of self-care into the tiny pockets of time that you likely do have available even if you don't realize it right now.
You can go a little deeper into this in podcast number 9, but what can you do that you know makes you feel better? Something simple, like particular songs or scents.
When I was working with my own coach a couple of weeks ago, we were talking about time and the way that it can start to get away from us if we're not careful. And I was introduced to the Toggl app, which I'd heard of before but hadn't used. I started using it as a way to track the time I was spending doing certain activities. And what I found was just tracking that time made me spend less time doing things that I knew weren't productive.
Next week we’re going to go deeper into self-care and how to build that rhythm into our days and weeks. In the meantime, I’d love to hear from you! What are your challenges in this area? Is this something you struggle with? Or do you have some great tips to share? DM me at http://www.instagram.com/jennylytlern

15. Prioritizing what really matters
The BECOMING Method™ series week 8 of 8. This week we’re going to finish up the series with Go - Putting it all into action
You’ve worked hard over the past 8 weeks - now it’s time to pull it all together.
By this time, you:
- know where you’re starting from
- have determined your areas of improvement/opportunity
- know what energizes and drains you
- what makes you feel amazing
- know what makes you unique
- what matters most to you
- what you still want to see, do, and experience
- the things you love - and the things you loathe

You’ve done a lot of work over the past 8 weeks! But it’s not going to make much of an impact if you don’t take what you’ve learned and discovered about yourself and put it into action. I get it - it’s easy to be excited about something and then fizzle out. I have done it myself countless times. There are so many things competing for our attention that it can be challenging to focus on something that doesn’t seem that urgent.
If you’d like to dig into this more and see how you can use the exercise weekly to stay on track, download the Big Rocks, Little Rocks worksheet at www.jennylytle.com/rocks
“How you spend your time is more important than how you spend your money. Money mistakes can be corrected, but time is gone forever.” David NorrisThis concludes The BECOMING Method series. 14. What do you really love doing?
The BECOMING Method™ series week 7 of 8. This week we’re going to move on to the N in the BECOMING Method Needs - what is missing from your life - body, mind, and spirit
Looking at the activities that make up your day-to-day life can lead to finding ways to increase the things you love and decrease the things you loathe.
By this time, you:
- know where you’re starting from
- have determined your areas of improvement/opportunity
- know what energizes and drains you
- what makes you feel amazing
- know what makes you unique
- what matters most to you
- what you still want to see, do, and experience
If you’re just joining me, you can check out the previous weeks here:
Podcast version - the BECOMING Method series starts with episode 8
Blog version - click the link for the BECOMING Method series
Let’s get started with this week’s topic - Needs - what is missing from your life - body, mind, and spirit
One of the ways that you can explore what is missing is to take a look at the things that are already a part of your regular life and schedule, and then think about how they impact you.
Over the course of the next week or so, I encourage you to carry around a notepad, a piece of paper, or just make a note on your phone.
Have two categories -
- Things you LOVE - for those things that make you feel great, that you look forward to doing, or that you enjoy doing immensely. Be specific!
- Things you LOATHE - for those things that make you feel terrible, that you dread doing, or that you just hate it when you do this thing. Be specific!
The more specific you can be the better.
You may be surprised by some of the things that make your lists.
Now it’s time to start brainstorming - how could you reduce doing what you LOATHE or make doing it a little easier or more pleasurable?
And now brainstorm some ideas of things you could do to INCREASE doing what you LOVE. Just whatever pops into your mind for the moment.
Finally, what will you do with this information? What are your next steps? (pick at least one) I will ____________________ by when _____________.
Next week we’re going to finish out the BECOMING Method series with week 8 - Go - Putting it all into action

We only get one life and we want to make it count. As we get older and make more time for the things that matter most to us, we want to be clear on the things we don't enjoy and don't want to take part in.
Think back over your values, successes, gifts, insecurities, things that are fun or meaningful, your work from last week. What is missing? What would you still like to see, do, experience?
Start your Bucket List, or if you already have one started, pull it out and review it. Does anything need to be moved to your Reverse Bucket List? Are there things that you have decided just aren’t important to you anymore? Go to https://www.jennylytle.com/bucket-list to download a bucket list template and further guidance.
I'd love to hear about what fun - or meaningful - things you add to your bucket list! DM me on Instagram at http://www.instagram.com/jennylytlern
